Please, no need to throw wikipedia dictionary at me. I know exactly what being bold means. However, I also know (and this is a belief held by other people including the person in charge of promoting articles to FA) that being bold does NOT mean that you go and change five thousand things on a FA article like India without talking about it first. Indian Independence Movement Subsection

Hi Rueben, Sorry, I made the edit to make a point about minimum subsection size. My intention was to promptly revert it, which I did, but I wanted it for the record. (I didn't mean to imply that I was endorsing the text.) I think the lead to the Indian Independence Movement page is the smallest a subsection should be. That is by point I shall make in a later post on the Talk:India page. Somehow, with all the various edits going on at that time, it got confusing. My edit doesn't mean either that I think IIM needs a subsection. Basically I was using the text as a place holder to make a point. When you see my post later on Talk:India you'll understand. HINDU GERMAN CONSPIRACY

Dear Rueben, earlier in my reply about 'My Professor' (20 September 2007), I gave you an idea of my background. In 1952, I spent some time with Taraknath Das and, since 1955, I began corresponding with and interviewing eminent living members of the Jugantar: all of them pin-pointed my attention on the central figure of Bagha Jatin, as the Symbol of an epoch and a movement. Having consulted the West Bengal Archives under the guidance of Bhupendrakumar Datta, in 1963 I had the privilege of opening the packing cases of the microfilms freshly received by the National Archives (New Delhi) from Washington, concerning the Indo-German Conspiracy: I translated the messages and correspondence exchanged in Kaiserlich Deutsch between Berlin and the German legations covering the Far East up to the Far West, intercepted by the US counter-espionage service. Since 1966 I have regularly been to the European archives and, in 1981, with a Fulbright scholarship, covered the US archives coast to coast. A considerable portion of my PhD thesis in French deals with the development of the Indo-German Conspiracy. I hope to bring out an English edition of this work very soon. It has been my pleasure to go through your Wikipedia article on the Hindu German Conspiracy, as suggested by you. You must go through my Wikipedia articles on the revolutionaries before you can dovetail the various data which are but pieces of a big puzzle. On going through the articles on Shyamji Krishnavarma, Taraknath Das, G.D. Kumar, Virendranath Chattopadhya, Barakatullah, Mahendra Pratap etc., you will have a coherent idea that their activities were not erratic. You will realise the contributions of Das and Kumar in preceding and preparing the Gadhar. Examine seriously the implications of the Czech user's article. Having gone through these articles, please inform me whether I can be of any use. Probably you will have to form a group of collaborators to explore this complex and ambitious project. Hi again — I've looked through the "Indian navigational boxes" category and made sure all templates using orange now use the lighter, higher-contrast orange. They appear to be Template:Azad Hind Fauj, Template:India independence movement, Template:National Parks of India, and Template:Prime Ministers of India. The articles on Taraknath Das and G.D. Kumar show how they prepared the field for founding the Gadhar. Defence of India Act 1915

Hello Rueben, I saw you moved the Defence of India Regulations Act to Defence of India Act 1915. You deleted (?) as well a bit that was to do with the Komagata Maru. Now, the thing is, Komagata Maru bit that happened in Budge Budge was relevant to an act called (I think) Alien Ingression act, so you are absolutely right, but I used to think that the DIRA covered both. I dont know if you are still in London, but the British Library and the KCL War studies department may have a few interesting literature and books on this. My school textbooks (Maharashtra board), represented the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, mostly as a reactionary step by a solitary army man (Dyer), not as part of a broader anti-rebellion drive. I will definitely look through your references on the article's page.

Well, my bone of contention with respect to the British departure of India was its presentation on the page as the "British granting Indian independence". This came across to me as a POV and I was looking to rewrite those words in more neutral terms. I realize that there were many many causes for the end of British rule in India.

Also, my high schools textbooks did say that the INA trials and the Bombay mutiny had a huge role to play in independence. This shouldnt be surprising since Mumbai is in Maharashtra .... Thanks. I am invariant under co-ordinate transformations (talk) 22:59, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Several current featured articles pass the size guideline; it's not a hard and fast limit. I'm experimenting with adding comments on FACs when I close them to cover issues that weren't raised by any of the reviewers. I hope this will help nominators as they ready the article for its next submission, so they won't be surprised if something new is raised. This doesn't mean that the article can't pass FAC with a prose size higher than the recommended guidelines; I just wanted to mention it as something to be aware of. BAGHA JATIN

Dear Rueben lys, Priyanath was perfectly right in suggesting the military category. It was one of Bagha Jatin's most original ideas to indoctrinate the Indian soldiers in favour of an insurrection. It was found out by the authorities during the Howrah Case in 1910 : as such, the 10th Jats Regiment was dismantled and several of its officers courtmartialled. The influence of this action was extended up to the Malay States Guide with their seizing the Singapore fort. Please consider the matter. I've tackled the Ghadar Party section first. My main goal was to cut down to the barest facts, since the rest has a proper home in the main article on Ghadar. Probably the only controversial change was my removal of Shyamji Krishna Varma from 'See also'. His article doesn't mention Ghadar, so either he's not directly relevant to that section and doesn't belong, or his relevance needs to be clarified in his article & in HGC. In any case, I rewrote quite a few sentences and reorganized the section; I think it flows better now. Let me know what you think. Maralia (talk) 06:42, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

Shyamji's Centre in London since the beginning of the 20th century was the nursery for future activists, a cross-road for pioneering ideas directly coming from India and moving to the American centres, an inspiration to people like Taraknath Das who, after six years of field work in North America, will found with Har Dayal the Gadhar/Ghadar movement. Har Dayal did receive ideas from his stay with Shyamji and Das had a regular trans-Atlantic exchange with Shyamji, reflecting sometimes in his Free Hindustan light coming from Shyamji's Sociologist.--BobClive (talk) 07:31, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

"The latent separatism between the Sikh and most of the Hindu leaders then took a regional turn: since Chatto – a Bengali – enjoyed an absolute confidence of the German authorities, since Gupta, another Bengali – represented in Washington the will of the latter, since Taraknath – again a Bengali – had been the pioneer of the political activities in the USA, the Ghadar tried to reshape its aspirations according to a new orientation capable of imposing the Sikh superiority on the movement. By interpreting this separatist spirit, there occurred even a troublesome dissidence among the Sikhs themselves : already contesting the political intentions of Dayal and Taraknath, all those who were more concerned with strictly social and religious activities, raised an objection to the financing of the political activities with money generously contributed by the Sikhs to assure their own civil protection. On the top of all that, the searching look of Hopkinson, the British spy used by the Immigration Service of Canada, succeeded in isolating a handful of Sikh supporters of the British Crown, constantly to track and to denounce the patriots’ activities. At the height of an unbearable hide-and-seek triggered by this craftsman of separatism, some patriots got fed up with Hopkinson’s pernicious play and murdered him, on 21 October 1914, at the Law Court of Vancouver.

"In India and elsewhere, the dedicated spirit and the honest devotion of a great number of Bengali revolutionaries gave to the Extremist movement its highest distinction, whereas “for their superior intellectual faculty” – notably for their advanced techniques (as Taraknath in the USA, Rasbehari Bose in the Punjab) – they were constantly solicited. At the same time, in 1916, a Bengali adventurer of a doubtful character, named Chandrakanta Chakravarti, with his cunning German accomplice, Ernst Matthias Sekunna, will oust and replace Heramba Gupta as mediator between the Ghadar and the Berlin Committee : he will not only create an artificial enterprise to divert the German funds to flourish his bank accounts and to own real estates in New York, but also of double espionage. Emmanuel Victor Voska and Ladislav Urban, associates of Tomas Garrigue Masaryk (1850 – 1957) – future President of Czechoslovakia – discovered therein a gold mine : the watchman of the building was himself a Slovak from Moravia and an active member of a Czech revolutionary faction. Making use of a free access to the apartment where – in addition to most valuable documents scattered all over – numerous meetings between the Indian revolutionaries and the German representatives were held. Voska engaged spies to trace the Indo-German chain-work up to China: some of his interlocutors, supposed Austrian patriots, communicated lightning information to Voska, right from the content of the despatches of Von Papen (German Military Attache in Washington), Zimmermann’s answers, the expedition of arms and munitions on board the Annie Larsen and the Maverick to be delivered on the Eastern coast of India, upto the projects of the Germans to sabotage factories of American explosives etc. Transmitted on time by Masaryk, in London, this information had such a repercussion in the International Office of the Allies that – especially after having seized, through the diligence of the British navy, the first vital cargos containing arms and munitions intended to serve the revolutionary cause in India – Masaryk got, in exchange, in addition to expected credits and prestige, the recompense he deserved."
