The first part of your change is fine, as far as it goes - I'm glad to see you used an academic source, and I'm assuming you are not misrepresenting what it says. However the second part is not supported by the OED source, which says exactly what the article said before you changed it (and hence why I re-phrased it slightly to avoid copyright problems). Note that I will have no problem with any changes you might make, as long as they are supported by high-quality sources (and you can't get much better than the OED). Note that, for a long time, the article had a very poor definition, with an equally poor source: "a native-born Israeli", which, apart from the ugly redundancy of "native-born", also implies that non-Jewish Israelis are sabras. I did try to find an extensive, preferably academic, article discussing the whole topic of sabras, and was surprised not to find one in the limited time available to me, so I settled for the OED, of which I'm fortunate to have a printed copy in my possession. --NSH001 (talk) 12:07, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Hello,

I'm sorry to bother you. I wondered, in light of your work on Rhodesian military history, whether you might consider doing a GA review for Belgian Congo in World War II? I wrote and nominated it but it's been nominated for a month now and nothing. Finding a reviewer for African articles in general seems incredibly difficult. Frederick Russell Burnham

Thanks for your helpful edits of the Burnham article. Burnham has been stuck as a FAC since July 30th. Three reviewers have been charitable with their observations and voiced their support for the article once I addressed their comments. However, the first reviewer immediately posted an oppose and left few actionable objections to resolve. She has been both slow and miserly about posting comments even though I speedily addressed all her actionable issues and erred in favor of the reviewer in several cases where the comments were only a matter taste. Still, she has not removed her opposition.

Question(s)

Hi, Cliftonian! I wandered can you help me with the following issues:

1) For some time now, I want to create a list of opposition leaders of Rhodesia since the introduction of responsible government in 1923 until its demise in 1979, but I can't find any source, website etc which contain data about that. As Rhodesia's political system was modelled on the Westminster system, and all the other Westiminster system countries (UK, Canada, Australia etc) already has lists of opposition leaders, I think Rhodesia should have such a list too.

2) Also, I can't find the names of people who served as the Speakers of the House of Assembly of Rhodesia from 1952 to 1959, at the moment there is a gap in list of Speakers for that period...

Eland kills at Entumbane

Hi Cliftonian,

As you may have noticed, I've been working on the Eland Mk7 article lately and recently saw it promoted from stub to B-class status. There is a section on the vehicle's combat history that includes its confirmed kills of ZIPRA armour during Entumbane in '81. Some of the Rhodie vets kindly disclosed that at least one BTR-152 was destroyed, and two mentioned a one-on-one encounter in which a BRDM(-2?) driving up the hill was hit on Essexvale opposite the petrol station by a single Eland parked near the Bulawayo drive in. A BTR was also apparently fireballed crossing the bridge on Essexvale at some other point.

Your sources for 1981 Entumbane Uprising are evidently more extensive than mine; I noticed you mention that ACR accounted for at least three BTRs during the entire op. I've seen a tally of ZIPRA vehicles destroyed by the Zim security forces somewhere before, but since ZNA was also using 106mm recoilless rifles against the APCs I'm still completely in the dark as to how many were armour-to-armour kills. Could you help shed some light on this matter by confirming how many vehicles and of what type were claimed by Elands at Entumbane?

Well done on your fine work on the Eland Mk7 article! Now regarding your question: my main source for the fighting at Entumbane is Masodja, the history of the Rhodesian African Rifles by Alexandre Binda. The narrative of the uprising mostly comes from ex-RAR officers. According to this the armoured vehicles were Soviet BTR 152 APCs mounted with 12.7 heavy machine guns. On page 387 it is mentioned that Sergeant Stephen Devine (Australian) encountered one of these at the Holiday Inn intersection on the way out of town towards the Johannesburg road, and that he destroyed it with a single shell (also killing the 20 ZIPRA inside). On the same page it is recorded that Devine's four Elands then destroyed two more advancing BTR 152s on Essexvale (see the Entumbane article for a more detailed description of this). The book mentions no more BTR kills.

The Rudd Concession, a written concession for exclusive mining rights in Matabeleland, Mashonaland and other adjoining territories in southern Africa, was granted by King Lobengula of Matabeleland to Charles Rudd (pictured), James Rochfort Maguire and Francis Thompson, three agents acting on behalf of the politician and businessman Cecil Rhodes, on 30 October 1888. The concession conferred on the grantees the sole rights to mine throughout Lobengula's country, as well as the power to defend this exclusivity by force, in return for weapons and a regular monetary stipend. Despite Lobengula's retrospective attempts to disavow it on the grounds of alleged deceit by the concessionaires regarding the settled terms, it proved the foundation for the royal charter granted by the United Kingdom to Rhodes' British South Africa Company in October 1889, and thereafter for the Pioneer Column's occupation of Mashonaland in 1890, which marked the beginning of white settlement, administration and development in the country. I think I got your point on the MCC. I've tweaked a few of your tweaks, but thanks for the copy-edit. I've just a little more to add about what happened, but then I want to go through and add a few bits and pieces from at least two other books, so we are not over-reliant on Oborne. So there's a bit to do yet. After that, I usually go for GA before PR and FA, and can be irritatingly slow to work on things as I like to leave them to brew for a while before working on them a bit more! But as always, and assuming I don't drive you mad by leaving it for weeks at a time, feel free to jump in at any time. If you want to leave anything on the sandbox talk page, again feel free if you want to keep everything together. It may be a little while before I copy it over to the article page.

One point on the images, though. I'm not sure how well up you are on images. I'm patchy, but I'm 99% certain that most of the England player photos are not really PD in the US and would fail an image check at FAC. There are weird rules over Australian images, and I wonder if NZ images apply too. I may ask someone who knows. Images may be a problem. I can get a dead cert image of Allen and Gilligan, but nothing really from the 1960s. I may ask an expert or two if we'd get away with a FU image of D'Olly. Thanks again. I put "Pretoria" in as a metonym in place of "the South African government" to save words and reduce repetition. I've used this without issue in several FAs, but feel free to change it if you don't like. Hope you are well and well done again on this really good draft. D'Olly update

I've taken out a few of the images as I have some concerns; I've asked an image expert to take a look, though, to see what we can get away with. I've also asked for some advice on the referencing for the two ebooks I've used. But I'm basically done from my end now, apart from tweaks. Maybe the aftermath section could be beefed up? Anyway, I'm going to nominate at GAN now to see what happens. The standard of review there can be patchy, but it may be useful before heading to PR and FAC. I hope you can continue to help out before, during and after the review, and I hope that you will be a co-nominator when we get to FAC (unfortunately there is no co-nom thing at GA!) One other point. Two of the English selectors had very right wing links: Gilligan was a member of a fascist party in the 1920s, and Bedser was associated with a far-right group. Now, no-one suggests that this had any bearing on anything (although it is hinted at in places, and I can source it) but I wonder if it should be included; either as a note, or in the main text. I'll be more than happy to keep on helping out on this as I have become rather interested in it. I'm flattered that you would like me to co-nom and will gladly do so. Regarding the right-wing links of Gilligan and Bedser, I think this is certainly interesting, and worth mentioning in a note or in passing, though I would be careful not to put too much stress on it as this could be perceived as POV (and perhaps original research as well). Perhaps put it in the article and see how it looks; we can always take it out later. Re: referencing, I'm somewhat confused by what we mean by "Loc 1387" etc; are these page numbers, entry numbers or what? I think perhaps a section relating to politics or something would perhaps have been better as it may have helped us get a more prestigious reviewer, but on the other hand there are more reviewers at the sport section and I don't think any dubious fly-by-night is going to take on a political review like this. It's not OR about Gilligan and Bedser as the sources make the connection without saying it had any impact. "Loc" is the location in an ebook; I don't have print versions of two books, so I can only give the location on Kindle. I've checked with Brianboulton who suggests adding the chapter numbers to make verification easier; I will do that today or tomorrow. I wondered about politics; I may move it later; you are right about the prestigious reviews, and I speak as someone who writes pretty exclusively about sport! DYK nominations

Hi Cliftonian, I hope you don't mind me asking and won't be offended but you seemed the best person to ask! I've reviewed at least a couple of your DYK nominations in the past so I know you usually nominate them yourself and undertake a QPQ. However, I've noticed recently there have been quite a high number of 'not a self nomination so no QPQ required' nominations and as one of your articles was among them - Jonathan D. C. Turner - I wondered if there was a drive or blitz taking place? I do appreciate that the DYK rules allow for no QPQ when it isn't a self nom. Hi Phil—don't worry, I'm not offended at all. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was actually quite surprised by your note as I hadn't been aware that Turner had been nominated for DYK. I'm not really that into DYK and this is not the only time I have not nominated an article I have created. I didn't bother nominating this one because I thought it too short and kind of dull for the main page, but it seems somebody else has taken it upon himself to do so (and without informing me, it seems). Anyway, I'm sorry to say I don't know of any drive or blitz with DYKs and I don't think I can really tell you anything that would help you figure this out.
