Ostroumov on Mollusca

You wrote in an edit summary: 'now you reverted what seems a good source' - It's a highly specific article on the effect of a particular chemical on filtration activity. It is not a good article for further reading for people who are interested in general info on molluscs. In addition User:Mytilus, who added the paper, appears to have a conflict of interest with respect to the paper's author, Ostroumov. - MrOllie (talk)

It's only in "Further reading". I'd look harder if I were going to use it at for a citation.
If the publisher has management that is independent of Ostroumov, it would qualify as a RS.
A chemical that inhibits filtration in molluscs looks important. --Philcha (talk) 22:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm with MrOllie here. (Apologies incidentally for a malformed edit - not sure what happened there - the intention was simply to remove the link.) Even if this wasn't reference spam, which it strongly appears to be, it is certainly research which Wikipedia is not. I see no evidence for re-quotation in the scientific press of corroboration elsewhere. I strongly suggest the link goes  Velela  Velela Talk   20:12, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
As I said at 22:51, 16 July 2010, the source seems to qualify as a RS since the publisher has management that is independent of Ostroumov. IMO excluding the source per se would be WP:POV, as there's no evidence that casts doubt on Ostroumov's source. If there were a contrary article and/or a criticism from a RS, one could then say say that the issue was disputed. If there were a few articles and/or criticisms, Ostroumov's source would be in the minority or even refuted. --Philcha (talk) 22:24, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

Long-term abuse report on Consist

The long-term abuse project is currently being revamped and integrated with the abuse response project to provide a more effective and centralized project to effectively counter long-term vandalism. As part of this cleanup, old inactive reports are being deleted. I see that you created on report on User:Consist back in November 2008, but from what I can see, this user is no longer active. Could you verify that he is no longer active so we can delete the report? Or, if he still is, please help us update the report. Thanks. Netalarmtalk 13:21, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

I'll respond at Long-term abuse report on Consist as others may also want to comment. --Philcha (talk) 14:13, 17 July 2010 (UTC)

User talk:Visionholder

Not sure if this was meant to be directed at me or someone else, but either way, complaining about discourteousness while backhandedly calling other editors "bastards" is not the way to solve problems. If you have an issue with an editor's behaviour, please speak to them directly. Have a nice day. --erachima talk 02:23, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

How amusing. "don't let the bastards wear you down" is a well-known UK idiom. Perhaps you could find how many USA cultures and dialects there in the USA. --Philcha (talk) 03:39, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm quite curious as to how "don't let the bastards wear you down" qualifies as an idiom, given that it is a perfectly understandable English phrase, albeit one which contains the idiom "wear you down". Perhaps you were thinking of the word motto? Regardless, a phrase to be cautious in using due to the potential to come across as uncivil.
Grammatical quibbling aside though, I see nothing untoward about this statement, nor about politely asking a user to change their signature when it is contrary to the relevant guideline in multiple respects. Explain your concerns, please. --erachima talk 04:06, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
I suggest we both abandon this conversation, as we both can probably find more uses of our time. --Philcha (talk) 06:02, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Unbelievable numbers

Fangorn-Y (talk) 17:18, 19 July 2010 (UTC) Hello! I'd like to speak about my deleting of some statements in the article "Microbial mat".

At it's talk page two editors already wrote their disagreement:

"They colonize environments ranging in altitude from 10 km above sea level to more than 20 km below the surface of the oceans and as much as 30 km below the surfaces of rocks and sediments, and in temperature from from –40°C to +120°C."

Highest mountain is less than 9 km high. Do microbial mats fly?

Deepest ocean trench is some 11 km deep.

Kola Superdeep Borehole was about 12 km deep. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.232.200.115 (talk) 17:05, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

There's still no land anywhere on earth ten kilometres up. Someone is going to have to fix these numbers.Punkrockrunner (talk) 16:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)punkrockrunner

Therefore those numbers are impossible. There is no abundant life buried deep under rocks, or flying in high troposphere. Even if such life can survive without food sources, at temperature ~1000 K (at 25 km deep), we would not be able to research such deep rocks.

The estimations of total biomass of mats also are unbelievable. Photosynthetic microbial mats are restricted now to very specific conditions and very rare - that is good described in this article, and in article Stromatolite. Ocean floor is very "soft" and is not covered any films. But even if whole Earth is full covered by biofilms, these films would not be able to have such mass. Total biomass of known, "eucariotic" organisms is about 2•1012 tonns. If mats are "thin coatings of 99% organic matter", their mass would be >2•1014 tonns. Earth surface is 5•1014 m2. Thus thickness of such "film", covered ALL Earth, would have to be >40 cm!

Therefore these numbers are IMPOSSIBLE and must be deleted, even if they are written in "reliable" books. I don't know what observations these numbers appear from. Maybe the authors mixed mass of biogenic matter (limestones, coal, oxygen :) and mass of living matter (organisms)??

I think such impossible numbers must be excluded from all articles of Wikipedia, even if they have "reliable" sourced and citations (maybe except citations by world-known scientists). If other editors disagree me, let them explain please how such numbers were calculated!

Kimberella

Hello Philcha! I have noticed that you want to perfect the article about Kimberella. I think this article can be interesting and useful for you. http://vendian.net76.net/Ivantsov_2009_Kimberella.pdf
I gradually (about half a year) compound the scheme “Oldest occurrences of skeletal fossils of some groups of Metazons” on the base of reliable firsthands and some personal researches (Vendian traces and tubes). I do not trust the generalizing publications; they are full of errors, speculations, a juggling of facts (conscious and casual), and ignorance of modern information... Possible, it too will be interesting for you. http://vendian.net76.net/scheme.jpg
Aleksey (Alnagov (talk) 13:56, 20 July 2010 (UTC))

Hi, Aleksey. New Reconstruction of Kimberella, Problematic Vendian Metazoan is excellent. I'm busy at present, would you be able to do the update. Then I'll check things like English phrases. --Philcha (talk) 14:40, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Presently, I have no time to do this. Tomorrow I again go to excavations of the Vendian traces and tubes fossils. Aleksey (Alnagov (talk) 14:59, 20 July 2010 (UTC))

Joe Diffie peer review

What kind of table are you suggesting? I don't usually see tables in musical BLPs beyond what's already there: a summary of his discography and an awards table. I've looked all over and confirmed that those are his only awards/nominations. I checked Flickr to see if I could find another usable photo of him to break up the text, but no luck. Hi, TenPoundHammer. A tabe for chronology, with year and event in each row. For example there's one in Dragon's Egg, in seconds because 1 race lived 1M times faster than the other. --Philcha (talk) 20:06, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
What? I have never seen a musical BLP with a timeline like that denoting events in a musician's or band's career. I checked a whole bunch of musical GAs and FAs and the only time they use timelines is if it's a band that's had a lot of membership changes. Can you show me one musical BLP GA/FA that uses such a timeline? Ten Pound Hammer, his otters and a clue-bat • (Many ottersOne batOne hammer) 22:48, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
We agreed at the start that you could with my comments. One last try then I really will shut about this - to me it looks very like a band that's had a lot of membership changes. --Philcha (talk) 05:35, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Spiders + Redundancy

Hi Philcha,

great to see that people are working on the spider section of Wikipedia these days! I put a lot of effort into it some years ago, but couldn't find the time in the last years.

The species lists in genus pages are almost always taken from Platnick's WSC (Source given at end of article). I see that you have done some great work, but am worried a bit about redundancy; you're very often putting very generic information into very specific articles (eg. general spider anatomy into species articles); I don't think this can scale, because then in the end you'd have to duplicate these infos in all 40,000 species articles (once they're there ;). Much better to put only the information pertaining to a single species on its species page, only put information specific to a genus on the genus page, and let people interested about general spider anatomy visit the Spider page. Keep up the great work! :) --Sarefo (talk) 09:17, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
