TeX mascot

Hi Oneiros, you recently removed the TeX mascot image from the TeX article, which is probably a correct thing to do whoever the copyright holder is. However, if I remember well a exchange of emails that we had a few months ago, you were ready to provide this image under a licence acceptable for use in Wikipedia; is that still possible ? Portable Document Format

I have changed the article again to indicate that PDF is an open standard and is not proprietary. I did this after reading both of these articles, to see how Wikipedia defines "open" and "proprietary". Oneiros,

Did you get the rebuttal information on the "Brad Hines" talk page? Please do not remove this entry. Simply check up on the references. There person is a pivotal person in the domain name industry, the domain industry is not exactly going to suddenly have less signifigance, nor is the president of one of the leading companies within the industry.—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Utzchips (talkcontribs) 2006-11-01T12:47:20.

TeX Users Group

Hi Oneiros, I see you are interested in the logo of TUG; as you can see, I have inserted it in the article so that it is obvious what it looks like. However, as one can see in the page http://www.tug.org/, the logo is not used in text, where the commonly used version "TeX" is the norm (as seen as well on Donald Knuth's homepage). There was been a discussion about this on Talk:TeX a while ago; while the TeX logo is very nice when typeset using TeX itself, it should probably not be used in other context when technical limitations makes it impossible to reproduce anyway. Minor edits

You posted a comment on how you use minor edits on the talk page of my IP (User talk:83.227.141.19) which I sometimes post as when I forget to login. IP users can't flag edits as minor so the comment would only confuse a genuine new anonymous user (some one who is not just a registered user too lazy to login). The comment about that I should provide more edit summaries is very much correct. Thanks for the reminder, I have been too lazy lately. Jeltz talk 23:46, 10 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

TeX trademark

Hi Oneiros, you made an interesting addition to TeX about the trademarking of "TeX" by the AMS, referring to p. 1 of the TeXbook. In my copy, I can see the reference to TEX, but I don't see any information about the rejection of the TeX trademark — quite the opposite in fact, since my copy (which dates from after 1996) still indicate that TeX is a trademark of the AMS. Do you have any other source about this information ? All the best, Schutz 14:32, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I contacted Barbara Beeton. Her words: “it was, and is, a claimed trademark, but rejected for registration - at the time this was tried, ‘TEX’ (all caps) was registered by Honeywell for some sort of text processing system.” The TEX-trademark is mentioned in the TeXbook.--Oneiros 16:46, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hum, this is frustrating because I can't find anything in my copy (at least not on p. 1). I may have a look at the online TeX code for the book, it should be up to date (and I will be able to perform a search on the whole text at once). The problem with Barbara Beeton's quote is that we can not cite it (it seems to be a personal communication, not something good enough for a reference in Wikipedia). However, I have found the record in the USPTO database, indicating that the registration was abandoned in 1985; this should be enough to write something for the article. Cheers, Schutz 23:30, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
According to her, the book is not in error because it's still a claimed trademark. If you have a link to USPTO, please share. Also note that the Metafont trademark has lapsed; this can be found quite easily at the USPTO.--Oneiros 08:53, 9 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I haven't found a direct link; start from http://www.uspto.gov/main/trademarks.htm, click "Search" on the right, choose "Basic search", then use search term "73478133" and pick "Serial number" as field, and it should get you to the right page. Schutz 08:17, 10 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gulf War and minor edits

Oneiros's posting on my talk page, my response.Nwe 16:47, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please remember to mark your edits, as you did to Gulf War as minor when (and only when) they genuinely are minor edits (see Wikipedia:Minor edit). Marking a major change as a minor one (and vice versa) is considered poor etiquette. The rule of thumb is that only an edit that consists solely of spelling corrections, formatting changes, or rearranging of text without modifying content should be flagged as a 'minor edit.' Thank you. --Oneiros 18:12, 17 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Huh? I didn't mark any edits to Gulf War as minor.Nwe 16:44, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

You couldn't pursue it anywhere even if you wanted to, generally whether to mark an edit as minor is left up to the discretion of the editor, besides which the message you posted on my talk page was a warning against marking major edits as minor.Nwe 10:15, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for Image:Opj logo.png

Thanks for uploading Image:Opj logo.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 23:07, 7 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Friendly note regarding talk page messages

Hello. As a recent editor to User talk:80.195.151.245, I wanted to leave a friendly reminder that as per WP:USER, editors may remove messages at will from their own talk pages. While we may prefer that comments be archived instead, policy does not prohibit users -including anonymous editors like this one- from deleting messages from their own talk pages. The only kinds of talk page messages that cannot be removed (as per WP:BLANKING) are declined unblock requests (but only while blocks are still in effect), confirmed sockpuppet notices, or IP header templates (for unregistered editors). These exceptions only exist in order to keep a user from potentially gaming the system. Thanks, Kralizec! (talk) 15:39, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ole Nydahl and Diamond Way: My Story

My name is Hannah. I am keeping my surname secret to prevent the harassment and death threats I have received from members of the Diamond Way cult since I left.

I have a 5 month-old son after Diamond Way's leader, Ole Nydahl brainwashed me to have sex with him and forbid me to have an abortion.

Diamond Way is a dangerous cult and people need to be warned of this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sexy spicy hannah bw (talkcontribs) 18:01, 24 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Military history of Australia during World War II

Hi, I've been working on this article for a while, and I guess that I'm principly responsible for its current length. Do you have any suggestions on how it could best be reduced in size? I agree that the article is rather long, but I don't consider it excessive given the scale of the events it covers - I am, however, obviously biased though, and the more eyes on the article the better! I'm planning to nominate this article for A-class status in the near future, and possibly a FAC after that, so this is a great time to trim it. Nick-D (talk) 23:25, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

As you might have noticed, I've already nominated it for GA, which would be the next step. :-) It will reach FAC eventually, I'm sure. But let's discuss splitting it up on the talk page.
Thanks for the nomination, and I agree that the article's talk page would be the best place for the discussion. Nick-D (talk) 03:07, 17 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the A-class nomination, but as a general note these nominations should normally be initiated by editors who have made a significant contribution to the article. It doesn't matter in this instance though. I'm also a bit concerned that you nominated the article as soon as the GA review was posted without responding to any of the changes suggested by the GA reviewer. Nick-D (talk) 09:41, 23 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Oneiros. I thought that instead of cluttering up the review page of the above, I would reply here. :) In response to your comment that nominations by a non-primary/major contributor are not mentioned in the official rules, it can be common place at GAN for some of the GA "supervisors" to remove nominations by a non-primary/major contributor, and such nominations can come under much scrutiny at FAC. I can't really comment for ACR though, as I have not seen it done there before. I appreciate that your nomination in this case was in good faith, though. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. WikiProject Java and Portal

I recently posted the following text on Wikipedia regarding the creation of a new computing-related project:

'WikiProject Java is a Wikipedian community that aims to better organize information in articles related to the Java programming language and its platform.

  • If I'm cor-rec-to, there are about 900 articles on Java technology in Wikipedia, which may be more than ALL other programming languages articles combined...
  • At least, it's more than for C++, and there IS a C++ WikiProject...
  • And it's MUCH more than the .NET WikiProject with 82 articles...
  • There is also a Ruby project and a Python portal so...
  • Now you can also see a proposal for the Java Portal (temp location).'

The editors whose position was soundly rejected at Wikipedia:Software notability are very active at AfDs, and they keep voting according to their own standards, even if the no longer link to that essay. Furthermore, considering that it appears that your primary contribution these days is setting up or altering talk archiving you've got some nerve pulling out WP:OWN the minute someone steps on your "territory". I see you've unilaterally altered the archiving parameters of dozens of articles without discussion, among them talk:association football and talk:Office Open XML. Unless explicit consensus has been reached that this should change, you should not alter the banner used or archiving size on existing archive setups. If you're starting archiving afresh on a page then you can do what you like. I've reverted these changes on pages which I'm actively involved in, but as far as I'm concerned you should undo the rest of them yourself until they are discussed as an act of good faith. Archiving at Talk:T. E. Lawrence: Thanks!

Thank you so much Oneiros! I was away from Wikipedia for a month and could only just now get back to this. I thought that the problem might have been with the counter, but was afraid that if I set it to 1, the system would number the first archive as 2. The MizaBot documentation should make the notes for this parameter a little more clear, don’t you think? I am so glad that someone with more experience came along and fixed it. Thanks again! — SpikeToronto 20:27, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Archiving at Talk:T. E. Lawrence: Query

Hi Oneiros. There is a section that is now at the top of the above-captioned article talk page — Introductory sentence — that is unsigned and to which there was never a response. Without a timestamp, it will never archive. I examined the complete history of the edits and cannot easily determine which edit it was in order to add a signature and timestamp with {{Unsigned}}. (Perhaps the editor did not use the New Section tab at the top of the page and merely added it at the then bottom.) However, when I look at a pre-archived version of the page, I see that it was then situated between an entry dated January 16, 2007, and another entry dated May 4, 2007. How do you suggest editing this section so that it will archive? Is there a protocol for such instances? Thanks! Sorry to be a pest … — SpikeToronto 20:45, 3 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd archive that manually: Just move the section to the archive page at the right position yourself. Be bold!--Oneiros (talk) 14:08, 4 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Done  I determined who added the comment, and when, by looking at the diffs between 2007-01-16 and 2007-05-04. I then added the signature and timestamp. After which I manually inserted it where it belongs in Archive 1 (see here <snip!> and here <paste>). Thanks for all your help Oneiros! — SpikeToronto 18:34, 4 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Editing a Page

Received your note regarding leaving a note when editing a page (Diane Carey). However, I have to wonder why you singled me out on this. I notice that almost no one leaves a note when they edit, including all the preceding editors of the Diane Carey page. I especially would have appreciated a note from the person who stubbified all my hard research work away. If others followed the practice of leaving notes, I would be more comfortable doing so as well. Dan Quigley (talk) 05:05, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Greece

Yes it is a fact that Greek bond market auctions in 2010 have all been oversubscribed. If you want I can send you the FT references.

That means that at auction there were many more investors bidding for the debt than debt was on auction.

At the same time yields have risen on Greek bonds.

Nevertheless every time there is a Greek Government primary auction investors have been lining up. Both of these statements are fact.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Dearieme (talkcontribs) 08:23, 24 Apr 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. —DoRD (talk) 20:00, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have granted rollback rights to your account; the reason for this is that after a review of some of your contributions, I believe you can be trusted to use rollback correctly, and for its intended usage of reverting vandalism, and that you will not abuse it by reverting good-faith edits or to revert-war. For information on rollback, see Wikipedia:New admin school/Rollback and Wikipedia:Rollback feature. If you do not want rollback, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Good luck and thanks. Archving

I have noted that you have implemented auto-archiving lately. That's good. There is few issues where I hope you could improve your implementations:

  • minthreadsleft = 10 and algo=old(30d) usually cause that oldest thread is much older then the what you put as notification 30 days. The notification then lies to the users. A better solution is to put minthreadsleft = 4 and choose a larger archive time to leave between 7 and 15 threads (or size between 25Kb and 75Kb).
  • You usually use minthreadstoarchive = 1. My reasoning about this can be read here.
  • You usually implement indexing even if there is only one archive (Archive 1). Is it really need to have index then? We have the table of contest that list what is in the archive. I usually implement indexing once there are two archives.

I'm currently writting an essay about auto-archving. Feel free to contribute. Do not do major re-writting, if you have a different opinion about something. Instead put your critics on the talk page, so I can review your point. --Kslotte (talk) 14:01, 4 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Tagging talk pages and templating the regulars

Hi. I reverted this edit to User talk:JWB. I'm sure you meant well but adding a tag to someone else's user or user talk page is generally frowned upon. If you feel their talk page is too long then you may simple write a note in a new section asking them to archive it. Likewise your note about edit summaries was probably sub-optimal. While there is no rule against using a template to communicate a concern we generally feel that an editor with several thousand edits under their belt deserves a little more time and attention than is mustered through {{uw-editsummary}}. Often what happens in those cases is the user receiving the template becomes upset at the template and the follow-up discussion more often involves the means of communication and not the original act. Thanks for your time. Protonk (talk) 21:18, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please add your concerns about tagging to WP:USETEMP and Template talk:Verylongtalk.--Oneiros (talk) 21:26, 29 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Simulacron-3

I removed the tag from this article because it has been there over a year without anyone fixing the underlying lack of reference.

I have a copy of the book and I know original sources (the book itself) are not supposed to be cited. However, the article is accurate, even if it was someone's original review of the book. (And considerably better than the reviews I can find online.)

Tags are useful if they attract someone who will do something about the tag. But at some point it should be clear that nobody is going to do anything about it.

Simulacron-3 is a very important work, it influenced much of the work that came after it, including The Matrix.

Your choices are to put the article up for deletion, find cites, pull the tag, or leave the tag and let people know that after more than a year no Wiki editor cares enough to find the cites (if there are good ones).

I think tags should age out.

Message on User_talk:140.203.220.190

Oneiros, I read you comment on the talk page of 140.203.220.190. The change you reverted was Londonderry -> Derry. As there were no other changes nor comments in the summary it could very well be a simple mistake. Also it was the first edit of the user so there is no history of vandalism or "mistakes". I think 140.203.220.190 should then have the benefit of the doubt (assume good and be nice to newcomers and so).
Look at it this way: if you made a first ever edit and you found the next day on your talk page a comment accusing you of vandalism. How would you take that? Cheers,Scafloc (talk) 19:50, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reverted edit on "LaTeX" page

Hi Oneiros, I would like to dispute your reverted edit on the "LaTeX" page on 23:36, 16 March 2012‎. You say "Sorry, but CTAN exists and those templates should be submitted there." in response to the website www.latextemplates.com being added to the External Links section of the page.

My dispute lies with your seeming bias towards CTAN as the only resource for LaTeX. CTAN is primarily a resource for LaTeX packages and has no clear templates section. I would argue that www.latextemplates.com has a completely different mission and there is no reason that both are not valid resources for different requirements relating to LaTeX.

I believe you should reinstate this link on the External Links section of the "LaTeX" page.— Preceding unsigned comment added by VelimirNZ (talkcontribs) 00:04:11, 29 March 2011 (UTC) Reply

Thanks for your feedback

Hi! cstross here. Thanks for your helpful notes.

I will not normally edit an article relating to myself or my work; I'm aware of the potential for conflict of interest and seek to avoid it. However, in the case of the "Charles Stross" page, I noticed (a) a broken link (to a non-existent web page), and (b) an incorrect book title (the book is due for publication in 2015; the title has been changed recently, subsequent to the previous edit on the page). As I didn't have time to find and pester another wikipedia editor to fix them, I decided to apply a quick fix on this occasion only. Cstross (talk) 22:41, 21 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the edit; I eagerly await the novel (and want to read more of the cat :).--Oneiros (talk) 00:01, 22 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
