Link FA-Bot / "Did you know"

Hello. As per your request, I'm contacting you on behalf of the "automatic protection" for images used in the "Did you know" section (and possibly other sections) on the enWP mainpage. Now, for clarification: How often is the "did you know" section updated, and how 'precise' is the timing?

Reason I'm asking: The bot does not have admin rights on commons, and protects the images of the german Wikipedia by putting them into a template file that gets included by a cascade-protected 'main page' at a predefined time (midnight german time). I am currently tring to get the german 'Did you know' section to use multiple templates and update slightly ahead of time, so the images are "there" before the but runs - once the time has passed, the bot can no longer edit the 'current' page and thus cannot protect the images. (I might've asked for an "admin-bot" doing real protection for a day, but I don't believe in bots having that much power, especially where the bot owner does not).

Therefore: Is there a 'fixed schedule' for those updates on the enWP? If not, the bot as it currently is cannot help you.... If there is though, I would just need to know what schedule to watch for.

At the English Wikipedia, "Did You Know" is updated using 5 different templates and an administratorbot.[1][2][3][4][5]AdminbotAdminBot Contributions
The bot runs approximately every six hours, as seen from the contributions. Unfortunately, it does not seem to run exactly every six hours, but fairly close to that (give or take 10 minutes).

Yes, that helps a lot. If I time my bot to run 'later' than the admin bot (which is crontabbed), like.... 5 minutes after its 'usually last run', and time the automatic rotation on commons to be late 5 more minutes (just to have a safe margin), then it's quite possible. (Recap of Trust Me in 5 sentences) -- Michael Westen tries to help Andy (Michael Naughton) recover money he had been lent from loan sharks. Andy had fallen victim to conman Zeke (Patrick Fabian), who had tricked Andy into investing in a night club in Cuba, which did not exist. Michael poses as a target for Zeke, playing the part of a wealthy southern oil tycoon, while Sam Axe plays the part of Chuck Finley, a financial adviser. Michael eventually cons Zeke into giving the money Zeke had stolen from Andy. Meanwhile, Michael gets one step closer to the people who burned him by gaining information through Pakistani Miami Consulate Security Guard (and spy) Waseem (Assaf Cohen). Michael also admits to his mother that he and Fiona are no longer dating.
I'm not a big fan of the red links, and I'm clearly leaving a lot of what happened in the plot. Are you just looking to list these articles, or are you looking to keep them individually like what is done on The Wire? That's actually probably enough for the entire article. I know you left out a lot of information, but that's OK for this case. If you want, you can (and should :) ) make it a tiny bit longer.
Also, I don't believe that these articles merit being kept. While Burn Notice is an excellent show, enough reviewers don't think so, so unlike Lost or 30 Rock, every episode shouldn't have its own article, as each of them do not get either enough reviews or enough production details released. Redirecting it back to Burn Notice (season 2) is probably the best way to move. (Also, that episode from The Wire probably ought be remerged back into the main season article per WP:PLOT) NuclearWarfare (Talk) 04:10, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Ha. I guess that's where you and I differ, at least with respect to The Wire. There is so much that goes on in an episode, and enough independent coverage of that show where I believe an individual article is warranted. Some episodes are available on Hulu, and if you search for the individual episode on Google, you're bound to find some form of episode recap that will jog your memory. I actually have Burn Notice season 1 on DVD, so that is why it'll be easier for me to write those recaps. I think this will be a great list when we're done with it. Peer review alert ahoy! Have a look here. I'll get back to you once you've addressed various aspects. I think that much more work is still needed here, read the review for the issues that need to addressed. I know you asked me to take a look at Avatar: The Last Airbender but I feel that the main article will be more manageable once issues on the sub-articles are fixed, plus I'll have a greater idea of what is going on with the Avatar series and games etc. Besides, reviewers might not be keen to see another Avatar article after the forthright failure of the Sozin article at FAC so recently. Coming back with a bigger and better article undermines any possible criticism of writers of the Avatar articles. PS I agree with keeping the plot concise, as you have. Your FA comment on Kitzmiller article got me thinking...

I've been here for about a year now, and up to now I've mainly worked defense (vandal fighting etc.) instead of offense (content building). I've been wanting to expand my horizons and do more to improve Wikipedia, but I honestly don't know where to start. Most say, "just create a new article" but to me that's jumping in the deep end of the pool. I've been wondering if assisting in an FA would be a start, I don't know... I've seen mentorship for those who don't grok the concept of WP, and schools for prospective admins, but I've yet to hear of any program for those gnomes who wish to grow. It's great that you want to help build an article! I would be extremely happy to help you in getting Kitzmiller v. Dover, at least in an advisoral fashion.
At the moment, there is no "school" for article building. The best thing to do might be to just dive straight in with Kitzmiller. The first thing to do is to check the overall content. Is there any major section that seems missing or a bit weak? If so, try add to that. WP:SCOTUS probably has some good information on how an article ought to be laid out. Then, go line by line and analyze the prose and citations. Does a fact seem like it could be challegened? Cite it. Is there some bad fluidity? Fix it. After that, check it once more against the GA Criteria and try to get it through that. For the FA part, the next step, you'll have to get a really good reviewer, and I can see if I can help with that.

They were already there in the original List of Burn Notice episodes article. Most of what I had found has been approximately right (within +100,000), so I left them, but I really ought to find sources for it.

Fielding

SVG

Would you mind explaining why File:Numb3rs Insignia.jpg shouldn't be converted to an SVG image? It's non-photographic, simple, monochromatic, and (I'll confess no firsthand experience, as I don't know how to make them) seemingly really easy to do.

Also, why did you remove the {{watermark}} template from the image? It is watermarked with the CBS eye logo, which should be removed (as isn't not a libre element).

Keep in mind that currently, there are some non-bot tasks that are bottlenecking us that need the close interactive attention of dedicated editors.
For example, in order to apply AWB effectively to the CIA World Factbook Demographics statistics (which are in really sad shape) on the "Demographics of" country pages, we need a key - a standard string we can target for filtering and skipping within AWB - so we can target just the pages with the CIA stat sets, to minimize search/replace errors.
That key shall be the heading for that section - we're standardizing it for all these pages. Unfortunately, this has to be done manually (or semi-manually - as AWB and LINKY can speed up tasks like this to some degree).
The demographics work is a tangent my team has taken on, since it supports our main focus which is the development of the geography branch of Wikipedia's Outline of knowledge, specifically its outlines on the World's countries. There are about 250 pages in that set, and this has proved to be a huge undertaking. We are trying to get these ready to move to article space, and the vast majority of our tasks pertain to these outlines.

A macro program lets you record keystroke sequences (what you type in on your keyboard) and play them back by assigning them to a "hot key" that you press to activate the macro. Using macros, you can automate just about any repetitive task on your computer. The best macros are programmable, allowing you to use variables, input breaks (like "Y/N?"), and lots of other powerful features. The macro program I'm experienced with allows me to execute repetitive tasks across Windows (multi-window operations in which the macro switches windows to do something in each, like grab some data from one, and insert it in another). Used in combination with Linky, macro programs are exceedingly powerful - you can use them to process all the pages you've loaded into tabs, save each page, and close out each tab before moving on to the next one. Note that repetitive macros are by definition bots, and so they fall under Wikipedia's bot guidelines. But you can easily make macros that are interactive.

However, note that at the bot department it was stated that we don't need bot approval to use bots on the country outlines. See Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Worldbot for details.

My guess is that macro proficiency would increase your productivity by at least a factor of 3 on this and similar projects.

See if you can understand AutoHotKey - I never bothered with it because Macro Express does just about everything I can think of for it to do.

Your first assignment: add headings and lead sections to "Demographics of" country articles

This task has two parts for each page you edit:

  1. Add a lead section to those articles that lack one
  2. Standardize the heading for the CIA World Factbook Demographics statistics (in those articles that have that set of statistics), and add a standard section lead to the section.

The first thing you need to do is familiarize yourself with the CIA demographics statistics set so you can recognize the complete set when you see it.

Here's the list of the country demographics articles: User:The Transhumanist/Country demographics articles.

Using Linky, from that page you can load 99 of them at a time into tabs to make them easy to inspect. (Highlight an area of the screen and then right-click - select Linky from the pop-up menu and follow the instructions / select from the options provided). When you are done looking at one article, press Ctrl-W, and that tab will be closed and the contents of the next tab will be displayed almost instantly on you screen.

We've already formatted many of them (like about half of them). You'll notice when you get to the ones with crappy formatting. Most of those need the new standard heading.

After you've gotten good at spotting the stat set, I need you to add the standard section heading and section lead to each article that presents the stat set.

You also need to make sure that the stats are included under the same heading. Some editors have divided it up into separate sections, without a heading for the stat set as a whole! You need to consolidate the various sections as subheadings under the standard heading.

Set the heading level of the stat set to whatever works for each specific article. On most pages, the stat sets fits well at the end as under a level 2 heading. On other pages it needs to be a subheading of an existing over-arching demographics statistics section (the CIA isn't the only source for this kind of information after all).

If the stat set has been heavily modified with material from additional sources, you should skip those, unless the alternate sources have been provided as citations.

Don't worry about reformatting all the statistics. Once the heading is in place, we'll be able to automate much of the format fixing using AWB-bots, targetting just those pages that include the heading.

What to do

Missing lead section

When you come across a "Demographics of" article that has no lead section, place this at the top of the page (after any hat notes - you know, wherever the lead paragraph should be):

{{subst:User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox23|country name}}


Where it says "country name" type in the country's name.

Missing standard heading

When you come across the CIA demographics statistics set that doesn't yet have the standard heading, replace its current heading with this:

{{subst:User:The Transhumanist/Sandbox26}}

The standard heading and section lead is in that sandbox.

Make sure all the CIA stats fall under that section, adjusting the levels of any other headings used for it, accordingly.

The Grudge 3 Plot

I belive that the plot of the article The Grudge 3 should be shortened so it will not ruin the movie before people get the cance to see it. That is probably true; the plot should be shortened. However, your changes had made it veer off the course of Neutral Point of View and make it seem a bit advertizey. Keep in mind that the section heading we're placing is temporary. It became that way after we started adding "unless otherwise indicated" to the section lead. But don't worry. Once the placement of the standard heading is completed, it will be an easy matter to change it on all the pages.

There are many articles on the page which are referred to that are liable and poorly sourced. I cant get louise glover the decent modeling jobs she needs due to bad info and info that doesn't need to be wrote or her and seen in her everyday life . Three must be some human rights laws for louise glover to be protective from so much negative and untrue info thats wrote from mainly ridicules resources etc. I find it hard to believe you still have louise glover page still active. I have seen enough complaints. I need get her page completly deleted of this site for good. How can we do this. For example in the example above, it would be Commonwealth of Australia.

But "Replace"?

Yes, some official country names use a different form than "____ of". Like "French Republic".

Some countries might have more than one official name. If so, include a link for each.

If all countries only have one official name, then let me know.

You can usually find the official name in the lead of the outline or in the lead of the article on the country. If it's not there, check to see if there is a Name of x article for the country's name. That might state what the current official name is. Failing that, see what the country uses on its own official website (that might be the best place to look in the first place).

I almost didn't spot this reply. To ensure I don't miss anything, it's best to post replies to my talk page or mention there that you've replied on yours, to take advantage of Wikipedia's ugly orange but incredibly reliable message alert feature.

Comment on FAC for United States Academic Decathlon

If you're going to go through with a FAC for this article, there are a couple things that need to be done. The middle paragraph of the 1968&mbsp;2000 section needs fixing. The dates I have there are wrong. Also, it's confusing how it's worded... it's often hard to follow exactly what season is being talked about. Going along with that, the Topics, past and present table needs to be changed / fixed. It really should be its own article entirely. I started working on this a while ago but became too exhausted and burnt out with Wikipedia to finish it (can be found here - was hoping to make this a FL at some point). That sandbox accurately depicts the divide between when themes were instituted, so you can use that to go off of. Other than that, I think it's relatively solid (I wrote it with the intent of taking it to FAC, but never got around to the finishing touches). The Controversies section is probably the weakest though. It could probably be changed to Controversies and criticisms; the article would then have to include the various criticisms USAD has received over the years - most notably those from California coaches, and Coach Hatem from North Hollywood High School in particular. Interesting. DemiDec could probably be used as a reliable source as well; I can use that for a lot. Also, does the actual USAD resource guide count as an unreliable or unverifiable source? I prefer to go by categories, which I find is more productive. Of course, there will always be misclassifications and the like, which becomes an override decision on the part of users. Happy editing! Ohconfucius (talk) 03:11, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
I would add that I have found on my travels that a certain fraction of articles have both linked and unlinked dates, and that in order to make all date formats consistent, it is probably better to use the latter two scripts. Country outlines project update - 2009/03/08

Things have been slowing down again, so it's time for a big push...

We've gone live

This project needed a shot in the arm. Also, its draft pages have been littering Wikipedia's categories for months. The time seemed right to move all the country outline drafts to article space.

WHAT???

Well, the drafts had been sitting in Wikipedia space for a year.

WHAT???

Development has been moving at a snail's pace and we could use the help of the Wikipedia community at large (who are more likely to find these if they are in article space).

WHAT???

Yes, we've gone live.  :)

This puts pressure on us to get the blatantly incomplete elements of these outlines done. The only glaring problem is the government branches sections. These need to be corrected ASAP.

I've mentioned THE GOVERNMENT BRANCHES SECTIONS many times to many people over the past year, but the problem just doesn't seem to have been taken seriously. So let me put it another way:

HELP!!! I need your help on this now. Almost all the countries have a government with an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. The links for these branches need to be completed for each country outline:

Here's a convenient list you can use WP:LINKY on to access and edit these quickly. Please copy the list's link to the top of your talk page so that you can access it easily.

If you spot any standardization in links, and ways we can automate parts of this process, or for groups of countries that have links in common, please let me know!

Administrative support for outlines

There has been growing pressure on me to write up the administrative pages for outlines - their instructions, guidelines, etc. Therefore, I'm now in the process of composing these. Fortunately, it is mostly a matter of gathering material from messages I've written to you guys over the past year. Still, this is taking up most of my time, and I will be buried in these for the foreseeable future.

Traffic control

The next big task after the government branches sections are cleaned up is link support for the outlines.

There's quite a list of links and notices that need to be put in place around Wikipedia, providing access to them to readers, and alerting editors to the need to develop and maintain these pages. This will keep our bot people very busy (and happy).

But the most important thing right now is to get the government branches sections completed. So please, put your bots aside, roll up your shirt sleeves, and start typing.
