Dorit Reiss

Your change of the article's name from Dorit Rubinstein Reiss to Dorit Reiss was inappropriate. You should have discussed it with someone. Her formal name in professional circles is Dorit Rubinstein Reiss, not the truncated, and frankly unacceptable, name you used. You might have taken a bit of your time to put it on talk? The problem is that I don't know how to revert your error.

I thought one of the primary attributes of Wikipedia is that we discuss big changes. And you changed someone's name arbitrarily. Explain to me why you did this? Oh wait. I don't care. SkepticalRaptor (talk) 05:40, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi, I'm willing to explain, but if you don't really care and are just here to voice your frustration, I won't bother. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 10:08, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
I think the redirect should be the other way, as she typically identifies as Dorit Rubinstein Reiss. I can fix that for you if you want? Guy (Help!) 20:18, 9 August 2015 (UTC)
Do you have evidence for that? In that case I would be fine with it, otherwise I would rather maintain the simple name. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:40, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

Michael Marshall (skeptic)

Hi! Just saw that you created a page about Marsh, but I'm not entirely convinced that he's independently notable. Almost all of the sources are only mentions of him or pieces written by him, and none appear to be directly about him. I'm tempted to AfD the article but I know you've put a lot of work into it so wanted to get your thoughts on the sourcing first. Thanks, Sam Walton (talk) 10:36, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

What would convince you he is independently notable then? Two BBC radio interviews, at leat five BBC news articles, 2 in the Telegraph, 2 in the Mirror, 2 in the Daily Mail, 1 by Huffington Post UK. All of those are national news media in the UK and not written by, but about him. Are those articles all entirely about him? No, but they don't have to be: "Significant coverage is more than a trivial mention, but it need not be the main topic of the source material." He acts as a spokesperson for both the MSS and the GTS in many instances, or leads campaigns, projects and investigations. The Olivia Solon article is entirely based on Marshall's investigation, half of the Penman article as well. Others like the Damien Gayle give him quite some space to explain his opinion on the main topic of the article. Also, his Stockholm lecture is broadcast by the Swedish public broadcasting organisation. I think that's rather solid, but I'm interested to hear your opinion. I'm somewhat surprised that you would raise this question, seeing your own excellent article on the Good Thinking Society, the sources and contents of which partly overlap with Marshall's page because they're closely intertwined. Hi! I've read your article Template:Ancient Syria and Mesopotamia. It is an excellent chart and may be the only territorial timeline in EN wiki. I would like to male a territorial timeline myself: could you share me the sources you used to make this timeline? Thank you!Ez zjc333 (talk) 06:01, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Hey Ez,
Thanks for the compliment. I used primarily Dutch language sources, but it shouldn't be a problem to find the same historical data in English works.
  • L. de Blois & R.J. van der Spek, Een kennismaking met de Oude Wereld (2004). Bussum: Uitgeverij Coutinho.
  • Encarta-encyclopedie Winkler Prins (1993–2002). Microsoft Corporation/Het Spectrum. (several articles)
  • Xavier Adams & Liek Mulder, Historische Atlas (1997). Baarn: Uitgeverij Nijgh Versluys.
  • Various articles on English and Dutch Wikipedia.
Note that not all dates are accurate to the same degree, and some are arbitrary to a certain extent. There is, for example, no agreement amongst historians when the Neo-Assyrian Empire began: some say around 900 BCE, others place it much later during the reign of Tiglath-Pileser III (r. 745–727 BCE). My dating of the 3 Hittite periods should also be taken with a grain of salt: it's just an approximation. Good luck! Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 14:24, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi Nederlandse,
Sorry for my tardiness. Thank you for your response. The suggestion of Encarta is really great. ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Skeptic in British English? I'm sceptical about that...

See https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=sceptic%2C+skeptic&year_start=1700&year_end=2008&corpus=18&smoothing=3&share=&direct_url=t1%3B%2Csceptic%3B%2Cc0%3B.t1%3B%2Cskeptic%3B%2Cc0

Evidence of recent pollution of the British spelling :)

However, I'll grant that the OED allows both, though it does say, "Now usually spelt sceptic in the U.K. and British Commonwealth and skeptic in the U.S. Similarly all the derivatives, scepticism/skepticism, etc." Now why would you want to revert my edit? — Hebrides (talk) 21:34, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't explain myself properly. Indeed, British English literature does not use 'skeptic' more often than 'sceptic' as you show above. But the words don't necessarily mean the same (anymore). Sceptic has a connotation of the categorical dismissal of any claim, negativity and cynicism, whereas skeptic stands for doubting and investigating extraordinary claims, consumer protection and empathy. So it's not merely a case of 'pollution', rather an enrichment of British vocabulary with a new word that sounds the same and is written similar to another word, but has a different meaning.
So, instead of "British English", what I should have said is that the skeptical movement (in the UK and elsewhere, including Australia, Belgium, the Netherlands etc. where the official spelling is also with a c) uses the k almost exclusively instead of the c. For example, every British Skeptics in the Pub event (with the exception of Eastbourne) uses the k (in fact, the London SITP was the first in the world, and has always been spelt with a k). All UK organisations also use the k: Association for Skeptical Enquiry, Edinburgh Skeptics, Glasgow Skeptics, Merseyside Skeptics Society, Hampshire Skeptics, Winchester Skeptics, Berkshire Skeptics etc. In fact, the Merseyside Skeptics run a podcast called Skeptics with a K to make this clear distinction between sceptic and skeptic. In an April Fools episode, they called themselves Sceptics with a C and accepted all extraordinary claims in the media without any critical thought, yet again showing that they see the words as different. That's why I reverted your edit. :) Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 22:22, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

Copying within Wikipedia requires proper attribution

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Acre, Israel into Ptolemais in Phoenicia. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. If you are the sole author of the prose that was moved, attribution is not required. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 22:24, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Ah ok, thanks for mentioning it. I was aware that translations require such an attribution, so unless I translate my own texts, I always add a translate template on the talk page of a new article. As it happens, I did attribute a copied text from Alexander II Zabinas to Seleucid Dynastic Wars half an hour before the edit you mention above as I somehow felt that was appropriate (I didn't know there was actually a rule for this), but didn't do the same with the edit above. I'll try to apply this attribution in edit summaries more consistently in the future. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 08:46, 8 January 2017 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:LitPolUkrBrig.png

Thanks for uploading File:LitPolUkrBrig.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:35, 20 January 2017 (UTC)

Dutch help

Hi Nederlandse Leeuw,

This episode is in Dutch and no subtitles are able to be displayed. At the very end of that episode, can you tell me whether that woman accepted that guy's request or declined?

Thanks in advance. --BrianJ34 (talk) 08:02, 11 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi Brian, I'm afraid I can't. YouTube says: "This video contains content from RTL Netherlands, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds." Their website does have it, but I'd have to pay for it, which I'm not gonna. Hope someone else could assist you on your quest. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 11:12, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
I have now uploaded the last 2 minutes on youtube. Could you let me know whether she decided to accept his request? Thanks. --BrianJ34 (talk) 07:12, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
Hi Brian, thanks! She did not accept his request. She said they had a very good friendship-like experience, but she did not feel any love for him. She was certain about her decision, he was disappointed but accepted the rejection. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 11:04, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Fireworks: Government regulations around the world: Germany

Hello! I'm sorry, but my English is very bad! Some points of Your Edit in Fireworks#Government regulations around the world#Germany are not correct, the reference (http://www.deutschlandfunk.de/feuerwerk-sicher-durch-die-silvesternacht.735.de.html?dram:article_id=406860) contains some mistakes (German journalists mostly are not good informed about fireworks).

In Germany people of 18 years and older (see § 20, 1. SprengV (= Erste Verordnung zu Sprengstoffgesetz)) can buy fireworks of Category F2 on the last three days of the year (29/12 - 31/12). If one of these days is a Sunday the sale starts on 28/12 (see § 22 I, 1. SprengV). People of 18 years and older are allowed to ignite fireworks of Category F2 on 31/12 and 1/1, but it is forbidden to ignite fireworks near churches, hospitals, children's homes, rest homes and flammable buildings (i.e. thatched houses) (see § 23 I + II, 1. SprengV). German municipality are authorised to limit the number of hours for fireworks "mit ausschließlich Knallwirkung" (i.e. firecrackers, Dutch: knalvuurwerk).

In Germany there are some restrictions in Category F2 for people without pyrotechnical license: i.e. No flash powder in Firecrackers and cakes of firecrackers; rockets (Vuurpijlen) are limited to 20g NEM (Kruitgewicht); (see §20 IV, 1. SprengV).

Replaceable fair use File:The Skeptic Australia.png

Thanks for uploading File:The Skeptic Australia.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:30, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Fireworks policy in the United States

Hello Nederlandse Leeuw,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Fireworks policy in the United States for deletion, because it seems to be copied from another source, probably infringing copyright.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to rewrite it in your own words, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Fiachra10003 (talk) 21:49, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

By the way, I know you just forked this from Fireworks. The copyvio looks like an old one that's just become more apparent because of the separation of the article. Fiachra10003 (talk) 22:10, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi Fiarchra10003,
I wasn't aware of the text containing a copyvio, as you say I just split it off from the larger article about fireworks because that was becoming a bit too long with all the specific details about legislation. Is it necessary to delete the entire article or just those passages that are copyvios? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 22:29, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Help with timeline Pattriottentijd requested

Dear Lion, I noticed that you constructed a timeline for Second Stadtholderless Period, which is quite useful (like the other ones you made that I don't mention). I just finished a complete rewrite of Patriottentijd and that article would profit from a similar banner, as it is impossible to write the narrative completely in the order of the events in a meaningful way, but that way it is difficult for the reader to keep track of the dates. Could I prevail on you to do it, or could you at least help me do it myself? Thanks in anticipation.--Ereunetes (talk) 22:04, 5 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Ereunetes, I'm amazed by the work you've done on rewriting Pattriottentijd! I considered doing it myself (I have recently done a small rewrite of the Dutch page), but I focused on a few articles on the side. I'm glad to see you integrated them in the article! Everything is there: Aan het Volk van Nederland, De Post van den Neder-Rhijn, the Battle of Jutphaas, the Prussian invasion of Holland, the Act of Guarantee... Thank you very much.
Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 23:02, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
It is just a big excerpt of the relevant chapters in Schama's Patriots and Liberators. Because he has it all :-) Of course, he used a lot of the Dutch sources one would expect, like Colenbrander andPieter Geyl (who should be added to the sources). I am waiting for an antiquarian copy I ordered from England of the Cobban source about Sir James Harris (I could only find snippet views in Google books). I am already salivating about the expected salubrious details :-)--Ereunetes (talk) 22:15, 6 April 2018 (UTC)
I think I can make a timeline similar to that of the Stadtholderless Periods or the Coalition Wars. I'll have to decide which events and which periods to include. I'll read your rewritten article first, and then perhaps start on a first concept. I'll get back to you when I've done that. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 23:02, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the proofreading. I think the relevant timeline would be March 1784 to August 1788 (although Aan het Volk then falls outside). The main events would be for 1784: March-April Orangist riots in The Hague and Rotterdam (Kaatje Mossel); September-Appointment of the "Constituted" in Utrecht; 9 October-Kettle War; 14 Oct-Duke of Brunswick resigns command of 'sHertogenbosch garrison; December-1st Congress Federation Free Corps Utrecht. 1785: 28 Jan.-election "Commissioned" in Utrecht; 25 Feb.-2nd Congress Free Corps Utrecht; 28 Feb. appointment Jonathan Sichterman in Utrecht; 7-11 March-protests against Sichterman appointment; 12 March Utrecht vroedschap caves in; 18-29 March-"old guard" reverses the decision;14 June-Act of Association and 3rd Congress Free Corps;15 Sept.-Stadtholder leaves The Hague and Amersfoort occupied by States army troops; 4 Oct.-Leiden Draft; 10 Dec.-Rump States of Utrecht move to Amersfoort;20 Dec.-Utrecht vroedschap pledges democratic constitution within 3 months. 1786: 20 March-Utrecht constitution sworn in; May-Hattem/Elburg repudiate right of appointment stadtholder; 2 Aug- Election new Utrecht council; 17 Aug.-Frederick William II succeeds Frederick the Great in Prussia; 4-5 Sept.-Hattem and Elburg occupied by States Army. In reaction Holland troops withdrawn from stadtholder's command; military "Cordon" of Holland and Utrecht; Rhinegrave of Salm in command Patriot troops; 1787:21-26 Feb. pressure by Goudoever c.s. on Amsterdam vroedschap; 3 April-only pensionaries to represent Amsterdam/Dedel tries to conspire with stadtholder; 20-21 April-Act of Qualification and purge of Amsterdam vroedschap; 9 May-Battle of Jutphaas; 13-26 May-Declaratoir of William V; 30 May-"Bijltjes Oproer" Amsterdam; 28 June-Goejanverwellesluis; July-August-Patriot majorities forced in city councils in Rotterdam, Delft, Leiden, Alkmaar, Dordrecht, Hoorn, Monnikendam/Mappa's "Flying Legion"; August-first Prussian ultimatum, ignored by States General; 8 Sept.-final Prussian ultimatum; 13 Sept.-Prussians enter the Netherlands in 3 columns; 14-15 Sept.-evacuation of Utrecht by Patriots who retreat to Amsterdam; 20 Sept.-stadtholder enters The Hague, purge of States of Holland and States General; 27 Sept.-Mappa surrenders Naarden; 1 Oct.-Prussians lay siege to Amsterdam; 10 Oct.-Amsterdam surrenders; Oct.-Dec. purges and riots help convince 40,000 Patriots to flee abroad; Nov.-Van de Spieghel Grand Pensionary; 11 Dec.-Federalist paper. No. 20; 1788: 15 April-guarantee treaties signed in London and Berlin; 12/13 June-Het Loo conference and Anglo-Prussian Treaty; 10 July Act of Guarantee presented to William V; 13 August-Triple Alliance. But this is just a suggestion.--Ereunetes (talk) 22:15, 6 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm Cwmhiraeth. Nederlandse Leeuw, thanks for creating COMCEPT!

Contributions

I've seen you are contributing to Wikipedia. I wanted to create a separate article for a former country: the Republic of Geneva, founded by John Calvin in 1541. Currently, it redirects to Canton and Republic of Geneva, which is essentially the second reincarnation of the same thing (restored during the Swiss Restauration). I don't have time to make it, but I thought you might be interested.Ernio48 (talk) 14:12, 15 June 2018 (UTC)

Cleanup of consumer organizations

Thanks for cleaning up wiki articles in the Consumers International network. Perhaps you did this as part of the Skeptical organisations in Europe project. I appreciate what you are doing to make more organizations more accessible so that their knowledge and content becomes more accessible. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:37, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

You're welcome! My latest edits aren't part of the Skeptical organisations in Europe project itself (though I'm glad you found it), but consumer organisations do have similar goals to skeptical organisations. They both want to improve consumer protection for goods and services by testing them, and informing/warning consumers/citizens about potential harm, and holding the producers and providers responsible for dangers or deception, and if necessary have courts of law or lawmakers take action. It's not clear where the boundaries between them are, but one could argue that consumer organisations tend to focus on ordinary claims, and skeptics on extraordinary claims that require specialised knowledge. DJ Grothe once remarked that "the skeptics' unique work [is] where consumer protection meets science education. Normal scientists don't have the time to tackle all these issues, normal consumer protection folks lack the expertise." Daniel Loxton wrote: "In my view, consumer protection is the most foundational function of the skeptics movement. We investigate, report on and promote awareness about products which are generally ineffective, sometimes dangerous and occasionally deadly, and which no other watchdog group bothers to research." [1] Helping people find out about both types of these organisations and what they do is indeed a valuable thing in the public interest. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 14:37, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

File:BEUC.png

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:17, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Megan Phelps-Roper.png

Thanks for uploading File:Megan Phelps-Roper.png.

File:Sherif Gaber.png

RonBot (talk) 17:07, 24 August 2018 (UTC)

Conflict of interest in Wikipedia

Hi Nederlandse Leeuw. I spend time working on conflict of interest issues here in Wikipedia, along with my regular editing, which is mostly about health and medicine. I am not an administrator. Based on your edits to Nederlandse Leeuw Pepijn van Erp and the materials on your user page, it appears not unlikely that you may have a real world relationship with Leeuw van Erp. Lots of people come to Wikipedia with some sort of conflict of interest and are not aware of how the editing community defines and manages conflict of interest. I'm giving you notice of our Conflict of Interest guideline and Terms of Use, and will have some comments and requests for you below.

Hello, Nederlandse Leeuw. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

Comments and requests

Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. Unmanaged conflicts of interest can also lead to people behaving in ways that violate our behavioral policies and cause disruption in the normal editing process. Managing conflict of interest well, also protects conflicted editors themselves - please see WP:Wikipedia is in the real world, and Conflict-of-interest editing on Wikipedia for some guidance and stories about people who have brought bad press upon themselves through unmanaged conflict of interest editing.

As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps - disclosure and a form of peer review. Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you need to do).

Disclosure is the most important, and first, step. While I am not asking you to disclose your identity (anonymity is strictly protecting by our WP:OUTING policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with Leeuw van Erp? You can answer how ever you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it. After you respond (and you can just reply below), if it is relevant I can walk you through how the "peer review" part happens and then, if you like, I can provide you with some more general orientation as to how this place works. Please reply here, just below, to keep the discussion in one place. Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 16:13, 16 September 2018 (UTC) (fix my mistake Jytdog (talk) 14:57, 17 September 2018 (UTC))

I do not have "a real world relationship with Leeuw". Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:32, 16 September 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your note. I fixed my error, would you please respond to the question about van Erp? Thanks Jytdog (talk) 14:57, 17 September 2018 (UTC)
Please respond. Thanks. Jytdog (talk) 19:59, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
We share an interest in skepticism and have met at conferences, where I recorded his voice intro, as I have done with many people over the years. But he has never asked me to write about him on Wikipedia, let alone offered money for it, and I have not been influenced to write it by anyone else either. I don’t think I have a conflict of interest because we do not have a “personal, religious, political, academic, legal, or financial” relationship. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 21:27, 19 September 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I don't much appreciate the sarcastic initial response; that was not helpful nor good faith much, much less expressing the sort of rigor and honesty that people in the skeptic community value.
Please do read WP:COISELF - it is very obvious that there is a personal relationship there in the fellowship of the dutch skeptic community. You are also clearly a big fan of his; this situation is right on the boundary between COI and WP:Advocacy which is a very closely related issue.
The key thing is that your editing about him has been undeniably overly detailed and promotional. Not NPOV by a long ways.
If you will not acknowledge the issue here and stop editing directly about him and other people in the skeptic community -- or at least acknowledge the problems and promise to restrain your enthusiasm, we can take this to COIN and get broader feedback. (btw, if you are curious about what COI actually does to people who believe that what they are doing is actually fine, when in fact it is not -- this is an opportunity to reflect and understand that, which is something quite valuable).
In any case, do let me know. Jytdog (talk) 21:40, 19 September 2018 (UTC)

The Wikipedia article about scientific skepticism

Hi!

On Wikipedia, I mostly put up and edit skepticism-related stuff in English and Swedish. I don't have any connection to the Guerilla Skepticism group, but I think you have. So my question to you, and the entire group, is, have you (as in the group) considered making a common effort at the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skeptical_movement page? I think it is a pretty strange practice to have it set up as "skeptical movement" rather than as "scientific skepticism" (which it previously was), and what kind of effort could be better at making it excellent than a coordinated effort by dedicated skeptical Wikipedians?

Cheers!--Paleolithic Brain (talk) 14:38, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Fahad al-Fahad

Howdy, I see you took over the Fahad al-Fahad page. I was wondering why and what your plans were? Will it be published soon?

--Evan Pokroy - Nullius In Verba 12:25, 12 November 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by EvPok (talkcontribs)

Hello Evan, Ensaf asked me if I could help to publish the draft. I decided to take up the project and see what I could do, adding a photo and more sources and Wikifying it. However, we need to be able to establish his notability before publishing the article. I got stuck with finding enough reliable sources to do so. For example, Raif Badawi Foundation has a good biography of Fahad, but it is not a disinterested third-party source; it proclaims his innocence and campaigns for his release. It is better to have other, independent reliable sources which confirm the same information, and those appear to be sparse. There may be many such sources in Arabic (I've seen him doing several interviews on YouTube), but I do not understand Arabic and thus I cannot use them as sources. I tried to find someone who can, but I haven't had success so far, so the project was put on hold for the time being. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 22:18, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Copyvio content Rahaf

Please don’t upload / add to the article any images or videos that are not in public domain or not explicitly authorized by the copyright holders. No video or images uploaded to any platform by a third party marked as authorized to free re-use makes those videos or images free for use. That’s YouTube washing. That includes someone adding translations to a video and releasing them. Those are stolen and are copyrights violations. Bohbye (talk) 15:34, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

List of former Jesuits moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, List of former Jesuits, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Disambiguation link notification for January 18

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited War of succession, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Diocesan feud (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Saudi Arabian emigrants to Germany

A tag has been placed on Category:Saudi Arabian emigrants to Germany requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Requesting input and expansion support

Hi,

I am just in process of initiating encyclopedic article Draft:Ex-Muslims. Please do have a look. If topic interests you then do contribute towards expansion of the Draft:Ex-Muslims.

Thanks and regards

Bookku (talk) 16:30, 19 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello @Bookku:, yes, that topic certainly interests me. In fact, I've previously prepared a draft offline about 'ex-Muslim movement'. I think that, in order for an article about ex-Muslims to be different from the article Apostasy in Islam (which mostly deals with laws and individual cases), we should describe them as an organised social movement, more than just the sum of all people who have left Islam. That way it has added value for Wikipedia. Do you agree with that perspective? Second, unfortunately there are still very few reliable sources that describe the ex-Muslim movement as such, and there is general agreement that the movement started in 2007 with the Central Council of Ex-Muslims (ZdE) in Germany, even though the term 'ex-Muslim' is much older and doesn't always mean 'apostate from the Islamic religion', such as 'ex-Muslim Leaguer' and 'black ex-Muslims' (former followers of Malcolm X). Some of the things I've found can't yet be used on their own, as that might constitute original research, so we also need to make a clear distinction between what material should be included and excluded. The consequence might be that we cannot include any material from before 2007, unless a notable scholar makes a case in a reliable source that there was a pre-2007 organised ex-Muslim movement avant la lettre. Do you agree with that limitation of the historical scope? I'm curious what you think, then we can see whether we can cooperate. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 08:12, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
I know some conservative Islamist can make defining term 'Ex-Muslim' term difficult claiming all non-Muslims are ex-Muslims in a way since Islam was first religion The second claim can come from sectarian point of view people of one sect reject other sects then for them people of every other sect are ex-Muslims. . But un till any such claim comes from reliable verifiable source it will remain to be original research. Any ways for the Ex-Muslim we are discussing about for this article are any Ex-Muslim who was Muslim by conversion or by birth and who subsequently left Islam. i.e. Ex-Muslim = Former Muslims (by birth or conversion). Though most Ex-Muslims are apostate defining all ex-Muslims as apostate again is problematic since even one Ex-Muslim says I reject my religion but not God.
In fact I was also in two minds whether article should be about Ex-Muslims as a group or as movement, in fact that is what I discussed at Talk:List of former Muslims#Article on Ex-Muslims and Ex-Muslim movement. Personally I am open for either or even both if sources and content available. Basically I am flexible but I wish topic is covered better than present condition.
A little issue as you say as of now for movement side sources will be lesser compared to Ex-Muslims. Secondly where would we fit in people like author Rushdie, there are some more before 2007 and very few of age old communists where do we put them ? And few historic ones records of whom are not clear enough and were historically persecuted. And there are few who leave religion after divorce. Leaving religion after divorce may have few scholarly refs, and still set of divorcees will not necessarily fit in movement article easily. Personally I have no issues to including them all in Apostasy in Islam article, but there it will risk again being shifted to list and then we will not be able to cover scholarly literature adequately like of Simon Cottee available on Google scholar. Rather I will write on Draft:Ex-Muslims and will not mind getting merged in Apostasy in Islam if that is giving justice to the content.
What I say is let us proceed with writing whichever you agree upon and I will priorities movement part first. You can share your non-copyright sharable part in Draft, For original research if any if we don't find refs can be deleted if we don't find refs in due course.
Thanks and regards
Bookku (talk) 09:35, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi @Bookku:, I agree with your perspective on what the term 'ex-Muslim' means, i.e. a person who was raised with Islam or converted to Islam and then left/renounced Islam. In a broader sense, I've seen the term used for and by 'never-Muslims': people who say they were never Muslims to begin with, either because they secretly rejected Islam despite their Muslim parents' upbringing and their Islamic schooling, or even though they didn't have Muslim parents or perhaps not even an Islamic schooling, but they grew up in a Muslim-majority country/culture/community and thus have faced other struggles in leaving Islamic culture behind. Also, as you refer to, some ex-Muslims will say they still believe in God, perhaps in the form of deism, but they reject the Islamic god, the Quran, the Hadith, and don't believe Muhammad was God's messenger, or they converted to another religion such as Christianity. I think it's valid to call these people 'ex-Muslims' too. If necessary, sometimes distinctions are made such as 'ex-Muslim atheist' or 'ex-Muslim Christian' to give an indication of their present views.
Well that's a good question that I don't have an answer to yet, but I would say that Rushdie and many other 20th-century and early 2000s ex-Muslims (including some communists) could be framed as the 'Background' of the organised ex-Muslim movement that started in January 2007. Some in fact referred to themselves as an 'ex-Muslim' (I think Ayaan Hirsi Ali already used that term around 2004), and we might consider Ibn Warraq's Institute for the Secularisation of Islamic Society (1998) a precursor to the Central Council of Ex-Muslims. But I think we should be careful with that, and cite reliable sources which draw connections between the periods before and after 2007.
I like the setup of your draft, it is clear that you are approaching the subject from the sociological perspective of ex-Muslims themselves. This is mostly missing from the article 'Apostasy in Islam', which mostly takes an Islamic theological/legal and a human rights perspective, but doesn't really talk about the psychological and social processes which individual people who leave Islam go through. I'm not sure if this (a) merits a separate article, (b) fits under the title 'ex-Muslim movement', or (c) should be merged into Apostasy in Islam, but I'm convinced it has added encyclopedic value and it's worthwile to write about. Whether it should be merged wtih 'Apostasy in Islam' is not necessarily something we need to decide right now, so we can begin our work already.
Yes, let's start with the part about the organised movement, I think that has the greatest chance of being recognised as having added encyclopedic value separate from what is already written, and for which reliable sources exist. I will add some of the text I have been preparing offline and will make some suggestions. Let's see where we go from there next. :) Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:08, 22 July 2020 (UTC)
@Nederlandse Leeuw:, Thanks for your proactive support and that I do agree with most of your above mentioned opinion.
One more title came to my mind is Ex-Muslim thought, life and activism it will accommodate broader Ex-Muslim perspective and small scale activism which is notable but direct associating as part of bigger movement is difficult.

European precursor

@Nederlandse Leeuw: Hi once again, since I came across a ref about pre-2007 precursor sort I added the same with a subsection European precursor. With reference to your above discussion please do have a look and review if the same is suitable, need change or we wait for better ref.

Butting in

@Bookku: I hope you don't mind me butting in, and I really wanted to comment yesterday but got sidetracked. I think there is definitely a use for this sort of article in Wikipedia. What you are describing fits under life-after-cults, or any "life after" any of several tightly-controlled groups that operate using mind control, belief systems, and pressures (by society, the group, and an individual's family). Though one might think that it could fit under any other wiki article about "leaving cults" (I don't even know if there are any), the ex-Muslim has struggles unique to Islam, Islamic culture, and Arabic-type cultures. I applaud you for tackling the subject as a new article, because the material is VAST. As to the name of the article, I recommend you keep working on the draft (as I see is being done) and the name will fall into place later. I implore you not to select a lengthy title, such as Ex-Muslim thought, life and activism, because that sounds like the title of a book, not a wiki article. Good luck on this venture, and do let me know if I can help. Normal Op (talk) 03:00, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

If I see anything I might think will help, perhaps I'll drop them here. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] Normal Op (talk) 17:30, 24 July 2020 (UTC)

Great job on List of wars in the Low Countries until 1560, it gives quite an insight into how poorly Dutch medieval history is covered here.--Catlemur (talk) 18:28, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Thank you! To be fair, a lot of these wars have not yet been covered in their native languages on Dutch, French, Luxembourgish or German Wikipedia either, with many not even having been given a name by historians (as far as I'm aware), so this is my attempt at raising awareness about their historical existence. I've also just published the List of wars in the southern Low Countries (1560–1829) in order to cover all post-medieval wars in that region before the establishment of the independent Belgian and Luxembourgish states in the 19th century. Quite often, people are unaware of these wars, or frame them misleadingly as 'Belgian' wars before Belgium even existed, or use the ambiguous term 'Southern Netherlands', so I titled it 'southern Low Countries' to also include the non-Habsburg territories there. Hopefully this will improve understanding and awareness. :) Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:00, 29 August 2020 (UTC)

Religion in Iran

Hi there,

The picture you added to Religion in Iran is hard to read because of the image quality. It also has a typo in it so I am wondering if it really is from the CIA?

Cheers,

AussieWikiDan (talk) 17:18, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

OK so the image quality was because I hadn’t loaded it properly, ignore that part! Sorry AussieWikiDan (talk) 17:19, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, as File:Ethnicities and religions in Iran.png shows in the legend in the upper left corner, the source used for this map was the CIA World Factbook, but it mentions another source, namely "Atlas des peuples de l'Asie" (Paris 2008). But I found that too long to include in the caption so I only mentioned CIA. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 19:23, 12 September 2020 (UTC)

Side-effects

Hi Nederlandse Leeuw,

Take a look at Phase-out_of_fossil_fuel_vehicles#Unintented_side-effects. What I haven't mentioned (but which should be mentioned) is about road development in developing countries (which sometimes have very high rates of biodiversity and forests which store carbon and thus release of CO2 when they're cut for roads, ...).

Also, perhaps mention the MOT (I doubt annual car revision is as good in developing countries as in the EU/UK, and some people there may perhaps avoid it (illegal driving), and some countries may not have it at all).

Also, probably not yet clear here is that new electric car vehicle sales don't mean reduced emissions, rather with legislation being as it is it actually means more emissions. This, as the existing ICE vehicle isn't removed from the road but rather is sold to developing countries (meaning someone there which was other means of transport, say the bike) gets a new (ICE) vehicle, often emitting fossil fuels, and the new electric vehicle increases emissions too (albeit lower then the ICE vehicle).

Will also have additional negative externalities which may even be higher. This because more vehicles will mean more need of additional roads. Opening up roads means increased logging (as it's easier to find more more big trees (exotic wood for furniture, ...) and wildlife trade (both of which means lower biodiversity, and the increased logging will mean more emissions).

Perhaps it's also a good idea to mention the US, China and Australian situation, rather then just looking at Europe (although they are probably not shifting to electric as quickly as Europe now is) ?

Genetics4good

Hi G4G, it's good that you bring these issues up. In several sources I have seen experts warn about the risk of fossil fuel vehicles from developed countries being dumped in developing countries where the new environmental restrictions don't apply (yet). I've even seen some Eastern European countries complaining of a potential 'carbon dump' if there is no regulation against Western European fossil fuel vehicles being sold second-hand in Eastern Europe where these environmental restrictions don't yet apply either, so that a common EU strategy for dealing with existing fossil fuel vehicles is necessary: 'Lithuania, Latvia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and several other countries however suggested that more must be done to stop the “carbon leakage” of selling second-hand autos from western Europe to the eastern region.' [7] On the other hand, I have seen several cities including Ghent propose a subsidy of €1000 for anyone who voluntarily has their old diesel vehicle scrapped (€750 for petrol vehicles), to prevent it being secretly used or sold to somewhere where these restrictions don't yet apply. [8] We should mention both.
I think we cannot say for certain that dumping 'Western' fossil fuel vehicles elsewhere necessarily means more emissions; that depends on which vehicles in the non-Western countries they are replacing. For example, if Europeans mostly dump second-hand Euro IV to VI vehicles in, say, India, where they will replace mostly Euro I to III vehicles, that actually means an improvement for Indian air quality. The point is that this second-hand dumping may slow down the phase-out process; the best approach would be for all countries to jointly and simultaneously prohibit fossil fuel vehicle sales and use (with the possible exception of vehicles that can be converted for hydrogen or other clean fuels), and to have them scrapped quickly to prevent their continued (illegal) use, and to make alternatives available and affordable for the whole population in a timely manner. (But this will probably not all happen simultaneously everywhere due to socio-economic inequality and ideological / Big Oil opposition). Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:06, 19 September 2020 (UTC)
You're looking at it in a too abstract way. For example, where do most vehicles from the EU actually end up ? I tend to think that a lot of these end up in Africa (Benin - Cotonou), ... (you'd need to do a google search to verify this though). The main problem I see is the fact that as more roads are build and more cities are build/expand into rural areas (mainly rainforests), there is a HUGE impact on biodiversity and logging activity. If 2nd hand cars end up in Eastern Europe (or even Sahelian zones) it's not a huge issue, but it's a different ballgame alltogether if cars are shipped to countries with rainforests, ... (zones with high biodiversity, there are maps of this) and particularly rural/urban zones therein (wildland-urban interface I think it's called, there's a wiki page). There is less impact if the cars only end up in the cities themselves (rather then these "convergence zones", and the cities remain confined (meaning there is a strict separation between city and wildland/forests, ...).
Also, you mention the Euro norms for the vehicles. But that doesn't matter if there is no or no sufficient MOT screening. If the engine itself is leaking oil and oil gets burned in the combustion chamber, the whole thing creates enormous pollution (not sure about CO2 emissions, I doubt these are considerably higher). With some such vehicles in developing countries, it even becomes hard to see the road anymore, with all the smoke that is formed.
Also, almost all vehicles can be converted to run on hydrogen or another zero-emission fuel (cellulosic ethanol, ...), so it's not so that you can just convert some of the ICE vehicles. The only reason when you won't want to do this is when the engine is so far gone or so old (say classic cars) that it's not worth the conversion any more (because parts are no longer available, ...) or if there are no hydrogen or other renewable fuels in the vicinity (which is almost always the case).

Electric vehicle conversions are also a good alternative, because at very least you don't have all manufacturing emissions of a new electric car, lower costs (if done DIY), and you actually take a fossil fuel vehicle off the road as well. It should be ensured that people in developing countries don't move from emissionless vehicles (like bikes, or just walking, ...) to a 2nd hand (ICE) car because then we increase the "total global number of cars". Non-exhaust emissions

Hey Nederlandse Leeuw,

I made a page called Non-exhaust emissions and added in a link at the environmental aspects of the electric car page. It currently redirects to rubber pollution. However, I think it should be worked out as its own article (as it also includes brake, road wear, and road dust resuspension). I also think other articles (like car, ...) and other articles about internal combustion engine vehicles should mention it, because on those pages, it's never mentioned (only exhaust emissions tend to be mentioned) but those vehicles have both issues (exhaust and non exhaust emissions)

Norwegian Ex Muslim movement

@ User:Nederlandse Leeuw

Hello once again and greetings.

I happened to come across a September article https://www.aftenposten.no/meninger/debatt/i/PR3m8z/eksmuslimer-i-norge-er-en-glemt-og-dobbelt-utsatt-minoritet

I read it with Google translate. If you find this to be useful as a reference then you may give a thought to add in Draft:Ex-Muslims#Challenges_and_movements

One more thing is a persecution tracker page has been introduced by https://persecution.exmuslims.org/cases I don't know if it would be okay to add as an external link in any of Wikipedia articles.

Thanks for your proactive support to the article.

Thanks and warm regards

Requesting some support

Hello and Greetings

While working on Draft:Avret Esir Pazarları female slavery markets in Ottomans, I came across an Ottoman escapee slave "George of Hungary" His account of escape from slavery interests me. so I initiated a Draft:Georgius of Hungary’s Tractatus. Frankly I am not sure I can spare enough time alone for this particular article since I am focused on related larger scope project of Women , conflicts and conflict zones, So..

1) I am looking for volunteering support in expansion and update of Draft:Georgius of Hungary’s Tractatus if the topic interests you and if you are unable to spare time for some reason may be you can help out by referring the article to others for expansion.
2) If you happen to come across any information on Ottoman women slavery by any chance at any point of time please do support Draft:Avret Esir Pazarları by updating the same.

Thanks and warm regards

Concession politics

Hi, good to get some examples from other countries in. I have entered info from New Zealand - and reflisted the citations (a good thing to do so the source is nice and clean!) Realitylink (talk) 03:01, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Realitylink, thanks! I may expand the Other countries section later as well, the American style and importance of concession is very different from elsewhere, and it would be good to point that out. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 14:44, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

Environmental impact of aviation

Please stay neutral and concise, and avoid repeating the same information in multiple places. Thanks!--Marc Lacoste (talk) 09:58, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

How so? The edit was neutral and concise, there were no duplicates, and you've removed relevant details about who conducted the study and when (this is important, because someone else who researches the matter may draw different conclusions), as well as when the information was retrieved, and the ref name so that the source may be easily used again elsewhere in the article if anyone so chooses. I cannot consent to that. I am going to revert your edit, as it has not improved anything, but rather degraded the quality of the information. Many of your other edits in this article were fine, so I'm sure we can continue to improve it together. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 10:12, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
I restored the study origin, but the sentence has to stay WP:neutral and WP:concise. Thanks!--Marc Lacoste (talk) 10:16, 23 November 2020 (UTC)
Alright, I restored the ref name and accessdate. Apparently you found the word 'only' biased, even though it's in the source, but okay. I think we can agree to the current text. By the way, I would like to thank you for several improvements you've been doing recently, the article has become more navigable and legible, and a lot of information is better explained in more detailed articles than this overview article, so that's good. Carte Jaune

Hey NederlandseLeeuw,

I saw you just did some edit work on Carte Jaune. I just did a bit of work on Immunity_passport, but there's one particular thing that hasn't been made clear here: does some sort of electronic health records exist that contain vaccination records data or is there some sort of "electronic" Carte Jaune allowing people to verify another person's vaccination records. Would be quite useful if that indeed exists, and I assume it should and probably "will?" exist, since it's vital for preventing disease dispersal, and it's probably asked for at airports and what not. The Carte Jaune exists, but writings on that may be unclear (doctors don't always write clearly), electronic records won't get lost that easily and they're just much more practical (as that data can also be shared online).

Can you look into this, and explain that further. I'm not getting anywhere further on that. --Genetics4good (talk) 18:02, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

Hi Genetics4good, yes that's an interesting question I may get to later. I only just discovered the existence of this article, as well as Immunity passport, and that they are in a bad shape. These will become quite important in the next few months, so it's well worth looking into their current status, and if electronic versions of the Carte Jaune exist. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 18:24, 29 November 2020 (UTC)

For all your hard work cleaning up/updating Marital rape laws by country John B123 (talk) 18:35, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Thank you! I'm humbled, I think it would be more deserved for the related new article I'm writing about, namely sexual consent in law. It deals extensively with the issue of consent both within marriage and outside of it, and for that the article marital rape laws by country (some of the material I originally gathered for marital rape, but you worked out exceptionally well in this new separate article, for which I'd like to thank you again, too!) is really handy for finding the relevant laws, as there is a lot of overlap between the two. I saw you already reviewed my new article – again, thank you! – and I was wondering if you'd like to take a closer look and see if there is anything to correct or add, if you feel so inclined? For now, I'm going through all countries of the world by order of population size, to see what their laws say about consent and coercion in the context of sexual offences. In some cases like Iraq, it's difficult to say on which side of those legal perspectives they are. I skipped Vietnam for that reason, and it seems like in Mexico it depends on all states' laws, so that could also be very complicated. Anyway, let me know if you'd like to cooperate on any of these issues. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 19:07, 3 February 2021 (UTC)

Hi, hope you are keeping well in these strange times. Sorry for not coming back to you sooner, I seem to have got involved in various different things of late and have got behind with all of them. I'll try to have a look at sexual consent in law when I get a few minutes. When I was looking into prostitution law I came across the same thing with Mexico, it varies from state to state. One of the far east countries (Indonesia?) varied according to your religion. Sharia law is incorporated into the country's laws if you follow Islam, but not if you are a non-Muslim.
Thanks for your hard work on Sex workers' rights movement, Sex workers' rights and List of sex worker organizations. I've tried to tidy up these articles before, your BOLD changes are probably the best way of doing it. A couple of admins are having a purge on giving attribution when copying from one article to another at the moment. For your future reference see WP:PATT and WP:TFOLWP. I've added the necessary bits to the articles to keep everybody happy Regards. --John B123 (talk) 17:09, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi John B123, yes I'm doing well, thank you; I hope you are well, too. Ah, then the situation in Mexico is states-based as I suspected; that will make it complicated to document and map. I've paused my work on sexual consent in law when I found Moroccan, Saudi and Afghan law to be frustratingly complicated, and decided to do something else for a bit.
Thank you for your past work on these 3 sex workers' rights pages, and for the compliment on my recent edits. I usually already follow the WP:PATT and WP:TFOLWP rules; in the case of the List of organisations I forgot the latter when I translated text that I first published on nlwiki (even though it was my own, so technically I have the copyright and can translate it without adding a translation template; nevertheless, thank you for adding the template). I was just about to contact you about this very topic, because I was wondering if there needs to be a better balance between the information currently included in Sex workers' rights#Movement section (into which I've integrated the Movement article) and the List of sex worker organizations. There still is some overlap between them. I suppose the List should be really concise (although I think adding the founding year, region served and some basic notes about where an organisation is based and what its primary goals are has added value, and this can be done in the form of a table, as I've done with the international, Dutch, Belgian and Surinamese ones), and the Movement section is the place for stories with full sentences, especially about things that are not entirely about a single organisation's activities. I propose we move texts like 'The English Collective of Prostitutes was founded in 1975.[98]' to the List (perhaps rewritten or reformatted into a table), but keep texts like 'SWEAT kept the fight against AIDS at the forefront by supplying sex workers with education, condoms and financial stability.[84]' in the Movement section, because this explains their impact on a given society and is not just about the organisation itself. What do you think about that? Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:38, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
I'm good thanks. Think the tables in List of sex worker organizations are a vast improvement over the plain list. Agree the basics about the organisations should go in the list, but anything above this, if significant, should be included in Sex workers' rights#Movement. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 17:56, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
Hi Leeuw. I've finally finished updating/tabulating List of sex worker organizations. Most of this is based on associations that are members of the Global Network of Sex Work Projects, but have also included organisations listed by regional networks such as ICRSE. Where we had organisations listed that are no longer listed by NSWP I have removed them unless I could find some other evidence that they are still functioning. Regards. --John B123 (talk) 11:09, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Requesting some help

Greetings,

1) Came across one of latest acknowledgement by Saira Khan about not being a practicing Muslim.[1] [2] Frankly I am bit confused in which category section of List of former Muslims her name can be added.
2) Lately I added a new section Draft:Ex-Muslims#Humor as activism tool, please do see if you can help in improvement of the same.

Thanks and warm regards

Bookku (talk) 04:16, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Greetings to you, too, Bookku.
I saw in the edit history that User:Unknown Temptation is arguing that the fact that someone is 'not a practicing Muslim (anymore)', doesn't necessarily mean they are now an ex-Muslim or apostate. The Daily Mail is not a reliable source according to English Wikipedia (see WP:DAILYMAIL), so I don't think we can use it to claim Khan has 'renounced Islam'. I think Unknown Temptation has a valid point that can be supported by the BBC source. Khan's words are not (yet) enough evidence to say she is a former Muslim, and thus to categorise her as such. I think we need better evidence of her saying so explicitly. As long as she does not, we should consider her a Muslim. I wish you good look on your further editing, and perhaps we will cooperate again in the future. Warm regards, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 10:51, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Thanks Nederlandse Leeuw, You are right non practicing ones can be cultural Muslims or Apostates either of it. Same time to conservative interpretations admitting or acting like non practicing amounts to Apostasy in Islam, so it remains a confusing status. I do agree her statement may be deliberately playing bit safe. Does that make a case for separate list of such people ?

Actually there was a break in my initial reading of news and I posted message to you, I should have referred to her mirror.co.uk column I did end up quoting daily mail instead. I don't know what is Wikipedia rule for mirror.co.uk specially it is one's official column of a notable person.

In my above message I have discussed on one more topic, I suppose encyclopedic coverage of humor as activism tool can be improved.

One more point related to topic at hand, I don't know if you already noticed of recent significant changes to Apostasy in Islam by one user, it would be better some one reviews recent changes there.

Thanks and warm regards

Question

Greetings! I see that you have expanded Dutch conquest of the Banda Islands significantly. It is really impressive! I would like to ask if you are more or less "finished" with the expansion? Because I am planning to translate it to the Indonesian Wikipedia and nominate it as a Featured Article. Thank you in advance :) Danu Widjajanto (talk) 22:08, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

@Danu Widjajanto: Hi, sorry for responding a little late. Yes, I am finished with the expansion on that article for now, so feel free to start translating. :) I should note that in the Dutch version of this article, the 1621 Battle/Massacre of Lontor / Banda Besar was recently split off. Apparently this was done for better navigability, but I think it has led to a disruption of the storyline of the main article (because the Massacre is the climax of the whole conquest process), and the newly split off article missed the context that the main article provided (which I therefore summarily added there). One of the reasons I wanted to include the 1621 Massacre into the larger article about the entire 1609–1621 period is because the total death toll of the entire war and the death toll of the 1621 Massacre specifically are sometimes mixed up in Dutch media and by activists. (Sometimes the Bandanese who were enslaved, died of starvation, committed suicide by jumping off the cliffs, or fled to neigbouring islands such as the Kei or Seram, are counted amongst the people 'killed in battle' by the VOC in 1621, but that isn't accurate either, although their deaths (or flight from the Banda Islands) can certainly be indirectly attributed to the military actions of the Dutch). It's your choice whether to keep it as a single article (as on English Wikipedia) or to split off the 1621 Massacre (as on Dutch Wikipedia); my preference would be the former, to keep a better overview of the entire 1609–1621 period. Incidentally, if you'd like to use some Dutch-language sources, but you can't read Dutch, feel free to contact me and I can probably translate some things for you. :) Good luck! Yes, women's rights are an interesting topic to me, and I see there is a lot of information missing about it that I am trying to add (or inaccurate information I'm trying to correct). I'm impressed by the amount of information you have gathered in your drafts! I'll see if there is anything I can use for my work, or that can inspire me to write about similar topics. Perhaps we'll cooperate on an article or two. :) Warm regards back to you. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 13:05, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

@Nederlandse: Thanks for your support to the articles. Actually I do have personal limitation in my attitude of running behind multiple topics one after other at the same time so many of them I have not been able to devote enough time but I hope and wish I would be able to update many of them and it would not be difficult with proactive support and contribution me and the articles get from you and people like you. Thanks again and Warm regards. Bookku (talk) 13:51, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

Question

Greetings, I would like to inquire if you still have access to the following materials?

I am currently nominating Dutch conquest of the Banda Islands as a featured article in the Indonesian Wikipedia, and someone asked me to provide a more specific page citation (within the range of 1-2 pages). Thank you in advance. Danu Widjajanto (talk) 10:00, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Hi @Danu Widjajanto:, yes, I do still have access to those materials (and you probably do too). All that is required is changing the URL, it will usually show the exact page you specify there. E.g. if you want to check page 123, you change the URL to "https://books.google.com/books?id=BgKfDwAAQBAJ&pg=PT123". Good luck! Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 12:28, 22 September 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Skeptics in the Pub

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Skeptics in the Pub, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. A. C. Methane in cruise ship fuel - could it really be a contributor to global warming?

I've just been looking at Cruise_ship_pollution_in_Europe where you added some text that currently reads

"However, even though shifting all cruise ships to LNG would be very beneficial to human health, LNG also contains methane, which is a very potent greenhouse gas and would increase global warming significantly.[6]"

I'm not sure that's true. LNG may indeed contain methane, and it is a potent greenhouse gas, but this is in the fuel - it'll get burnt by the ship.

The only time methane is a problem is when it gets into the atmosphere, which for this fuel can only be from a leak.

Secondly the article you link to is paywalled (as well as being in Dutch) and doesn't make a good reference.

Number774 (talk) 17:40, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

First, paywalled sources are allowed per WP:PAYWALL. Second, non-English sources are allowed per WP:NONENG. Third, the article says '[LNG] stoot methaan uit, een krachtig broeikasgas.' (lit. '[LNG] emits methane, a potent greenhouse gas.') So the sentence should say 'emits' rather than 'contains', so I stand corrected, I've just fixed it, thank you for noting it. If you can find RS that say something else, feel free to add them. Greetings, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:56, 30 November 2021 (UTC)
I've done some more digging, and found this reference [9] which makes things much more clear. The sources of methane when LNG is used in shipping are:
(1) Leakages, primarily during bunkering (filling) operations
(2) "Slip" which is the term they use for methane that goes through the engine unburnt.
I'm honestly surprised to find that a significant amount of methane isn't burnt in the engine; [10] shows that the engine manufacturers are also aware of this. Would you like me to edit the page to make this clear? Number774 (talk) 21:15, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

c/e & guidance request

Greetings @ Nederlandse Leeuw

I am looking for some copy edit help for Draft:Ex-Muslim activism in Kerala where in I have tried to improve the draft content as per feed back received on the article talk page and maintenance tags.

I need also guidance:

Lead of the draft as of now starts as

"Since 2019, Ex-Muslim new atheism has been developing into salient collectivization of activism in Kerala. .."

This lead statement depends on above sentence in the draft body content:

"..According to P. Sandeep organizational formation of Ex-Muslim movement can be seen as a salient milestone in the collectivisation of dissent among apostates from Islam in Kerala. .."

One c/e user has tagged above said sentence in the article for clarification needed i.e. Template:Clarify .

Frankly the sentence included by me in draft body content is bit awkwardly paraphrased to avoid copyright issues, the original sourced sentence of P. Sandeep from this news 18 article's last sentence is as follows:

"..Ex-Muslims of Kerala is, therefore, seen as an important step forward in the collectivisation of dissent from Islam."

(The P. Sandeep's sentence is related to formalization of an organization of 'Ex Muslims of Kerala')

So how the sentence/ information included by me can be improved that the sentence shall cease to attract Template:Clarify. I request your help and guidance.

Thanks and warm regards

Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on the talk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made, Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly name Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like [11] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

The Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

Thank you for your time, I hope to edit with you in the future.Sgerbic (talk) 07:20, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for the invitation! I'll see what I can do for the project. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:30, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Hi Nederlandse Leeuw. This is a bit of a long shot, but back in August 2020 you added some references to this article and I was wondering if you remember what work "Kielstra 1917" referred to? Unfortunately you didn't specify a full cite at the time, and even after a lot of searching I can't identify it. It's obviously Egbert Broer Kielstra, but the only 1917 work I can find (De Indische archipel: geschiedkundige schetsen) doesn't appear to match the page numbers you gave. - LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 19:26, 22 May 2022 (UTC)

North Slavs discussion

Hi, just a heads-up that if I suddenly disappear for several days it does not mean I no longer want to take part in the discussion at this AfD. I'm just busy with work these days, e.g. I pulled a 13 hr shift just yesterday and my body is hating me for it now haha (the delightful existence of the industrial working class, eh?). Also, just wanted to say that despite our differences in views regarding the article I really do appreciate your contributions, even though I disagree with some of them. In the past there have been several attempts to completely destroy the page; this got so out of hand that eventually it had to be protected for a while in 2017. It's refreshing to see someone who disagrees with its content go about tackling the issue in a civilised manner. Respect and hear from you later. --Samotny Wędrowiec (talk) 19:37, 16 June 2022 (UTC)

Dziękuję! I'd like to return that sentiment to you. I know how frustrating it can be when articles I've written are unfairly attacked, vandalised or nominated for deletion, and how stressful it can be if people are uncivil. So I'm trying my best to be constructive and fair whenever I criticise someone else's work. As I've just said on the AfD as well, I'm glad that you think I am well-intentioned; I think the same about you. However, some of your texts, choice of sources, and the way you represent sources, unfortunately do not comply to some of English Wikipedia's rules and standards. I couldn't treat your work differently just because I like you; we all need to obey the same rules. And I understand if you don't have time to respond to everything immediately, that is fine! AfDs usually last for at least 14 days, you've got plently of time to review our comments, respond to them, and cooperate in trying to fix specific issues and discuss potential solutions. Respect to you, too, and we'll talk later. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:00, 16 June 2022 (UTC)
This AfD clearly belongs to the most civilized and constructive AfDs I've ever seen here. Chapeau for that, fellas!
As for the "Ruthenen" on the map of Austro-Hungary: that's how Ukrainians were normally designated in the K.u.K. monarchy. Rusyn was not considered a separate language at the time, and the name "Ukrainians" would rather refer to the Ukrainians living in the Russian Empire. Since there was no significant Russian minority in Austria, it is not clear whether the author of the map would have counted them as Ruthenians as well, but my educated guess is that he wouldn't. Cheers, —IJzeren Jan Uszkiełtu? 15:33, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

Thanks IJzeren Jan, that's roughly what I thought, too. But explaining that in the map caption would be too long and OR, so I decided to just put "Ruthenians" in quotation marks to indicate that this is an unusual and outdated demonym/ethnonym. Those borders between Austria-Hungary and the Russian Empire appear to be quite important in the various concepts of "North Slavs" that emerged in the mid-19th century. "North" often has a far more limited scope than simply all East+West Slavs, e.g. Slavs the north of Hungary, or the north of Austria-Hungary, but not necessarily beyond. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 15:49, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
