Vandalism (Bald Eagle) edit

Thanks for your words of encouragement, but I would like to encourage you to start a dialog with your fellow page-protection admins to seriously re-evaluate your standards for page protection. For context, see: Talk:Bald Eagle#Vandalism. There is real confusion among the editors there, now that there has been so much vandalism that the real content is in question. The high level of reverts mixed in with the occasional update makes it extremely tedious to find the correct content. This is a good example of how allowing IP edits actually causes more harm than good.

I believe that once a page has been flagged as a popular target for anonymous edits, it should be semi-protected permanently. At that point, the value of the occasional helpful IP edit no longer outweighs the constant barrage of nonsense or deliberate misinformation. The possibility that this will be missed and allowed to stay in the article far outweighs the helpful information that might be missed. The WP standard is that it is better to have no information, rather than wrong information. Dhaluza 10:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Chesster edit

Hi Natalya,

Thanks! I happened to see your edit to his page when I just now looked at recent changes. There has been a barrage of sockpuppet attacks on Metros's talk page, and this one just seems to fit the pattern: pasting in something really huge and disruptive, and then whining "politely" to be unblocked. It's probably this one: Wikipedia:Requests_for_checkuser/Case/Viva_La_France. Compare Chesster's edits, for example, with the most recent other sockpuppet: [1]. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 04:30, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cotton edit

Just wanted to say thanks for looking into the Cotton article for me for protection. The problem is, every time its a new IP vandalising it, so reporting to AIV isn't going to help. As it happens, I don't actually have any interest in the article, its just on my watch list from previous vandalism. re disambiguation. what can be done in (say) that situation, where the disambiguation is imaginary? Later update: This Intravenous_drug_use was the page that I thought you referring to.... I do understand your original message now. But still raise this other question as long as you're there. Martin | talkcontribs 04:34, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

What I mean is, when someone says "I am an IV drug user", do you think that that is ambiguous, and needs disambiguation? Martin | talkcontribs 00:19, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't think I was being clear. Thanks again for replying. I added a comment to the Intravenous_drug_use disambiguation talk page, where I believe it is more appropriately placed. Martin | talkcontribs 07:07, 11 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I'm about. I use Wikipedia all the time for reading, so any messages I tend to get pretty sharpish. As for how Wikipedia is going for me, as you might have guessed by my editing patterns, not very. The bottom fell out of Wikipedia for me when Esperanza was deleted. Wikipedia stopped being fun, so I stopped editing regularly.
I just find it sad really that people were so offended by the concept of Esperanza. While it obviously had its faults, it really didn't deserve the hammering it got. In essence, it was just there to make Wikipedia a nicer place to be. Is that such a bad thing? I did edit the encyclopedia in addition to using Esperanza, but clearly my editing was depedent on Esperanza being there. So, by deleting Esperanza, they lost me. Ho hum.
Anyway, in real life, I've just started my second year of A level (12th grade) and am studying Spanish, German, Music and Philosophy. I've only started German last year. Eek.
So, yes, how are you keeping? Kind regards, —Celestianpower háblame 21:40, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I'm definitely with you on the fearing talking openly front, and that was exactly how I felt. I was in the council practically from its conception, and we always "got it", if I remember. We recognised that Esperanza != Wikipedia, but did want to continue it because it was good fun and a good chance to get talking to other people. "A happier Wikipedian = a more productive editor" was always my motto.
Warmest regards, —Celestianpower háblame 21:57, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
The epitomy of what was wrong in the attitudes to Esperanza is this (from the new Esperanza essay): "This essay serves as a warning to all editors that existing projects must be open and transparent to all editors at all times, not to be overly hierarchical lest they are to meet a fate similar to Esperanza's." People just didn't get it. At all. Regards, —Celestianpower háblame 22:00, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

To get the full scope of my contributions, you have to also look at the account I use on public computers, but admittedly that doesn't really make it any more impressive. Alas, I doubt I'll ever have 300-800 edits in a month again, but every once in a while I'm sure I'll get the urge to go on recent changes patrol or clear out the speedy deletions queue.
