Medical genetics rating template edit

Great work, I was thinking the MEDGENP should have something like that. I can understand the quality scale (which we already have) although I could not see how the importance scale works, even in the Chemicals project. It is fine to have one but the grading appears arbitrary. The existing article rating could have an extra column with article importance?

One thing I noticed was that an editor complained that this type of template has been slapped on talk pages of articles where there was previously no discussion, making it appear that someone had started a discussion there, when in fact the article was just being 'claimed' by a project. It may potentially stimulate discussion, but there are so many articles under the project that I think maybe initially it should just be used on articles where a discussion already exists, or else create a discussion/To Do box {{todo}} when adding the template to a new talk page. --apers0n 08:49, 27 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I found this example of importance scale at the Biography project (although there are no examples of articles listed there) - if this is used in MEDGENP perhaps it could be done by incidence on genetic conditions? --apers0n 07:37, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure how to handle this because looking at incidence, some 'rare' genetic diseases are well-known, others are not, unrelated to how common they are. It's probably due to their public presentation (e.g. Down syndrome and achondroplasia being well known, compared with genetic disorders that cause abortion being seen as relatively obscure). Each article should have a section on epidemiology, and unless linked to incidence, the importance rating seems to be a bit subjective - is there another way of rating importance e.g. search engine hits? --apers0n 08:18, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Article rating - we should change our rating scale to match the ones used by other projects, as the templates already exist for {{Template:A-Class}} etc. and merge the categories genetic and congenital genetic disorders. The template merger could probably be helped by using a bot to speed things up, or get the tech people who look after categories to do it. --apers0n 13:35, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Alphabetization of article rating - Great idea, the table is much too long as it is now. --apers0n 05:40, 14 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ophthalmology missing from the Medicine portal edit

The Medicine portal does not include eyes or feature Ophthalmology as a speciality! That is indeed strange considering that Ophthalmology encompasses a tremendous amount of medicine, besides surgical procedures. Eye complaints and their management is a very common medically managed issue. Being an eye specialist, I feel that it deserves inclusion in the portal and envisage a much wider role for portal as a whole for physicians and surgeons. Excluding other surgical specialities also is, IMO, not desirable. Could you kindly take steps to ensure such an inclusion. EyeMD 14:51, 31 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

Version 0.5 release edit

I noticed that you have nominated several life science articles for release on the fixed version of Wikipedia. Do you know if you will be informed if they are accepted or rejected or if not where to look to find out? I ask you this because I’ve nominated the article photosynthetic reaction centre myself and I’m keen to find out if it has been accepted. I’ve worked hard on this article and even received a barnstar for my work so it will be fantastic if it gets published! Thanks for your help.

P.S. Nice transfer RNA above; are you interested in biochemistry too? Miller 15:22, 3 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

WikiProjects edit

What do you think about my changes to the WikiProjects box on the portal?--Steven Fruitsmaak | Talk 00:16, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think it's good, easier to see the branches, what is new, what is not. Great! NCurse   work 06:59, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was thinking... because this new wikiprojects box is a lot bigger there is some free space next to it. What would you say about creating a new "Medicine news" box, a bit like the "Molecular and Cellular Biology news" box on Portal:Molecular and Cellular Biology? The only thing I'd prefer is to take stories from http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Portal:Health (and maybe Portal:Science and technology) instead of pointing to external sources. If you like the idea, I'll compose a draft version.--Steven Fruitsmaak | Talk 15:15, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Good idea! Please let me know when you are ready. I'd refresh it regularly. NCurse   work 16:00, 4 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
Done, please comment.--Steven Fruitsmaak | Talk 10:52, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Great! Maybe we should change Categories and News box. What do you think? News will be refreshed regularly, categories box won't change. NCurse   work 13:28, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I agree, so I changed them.
I'm still thinking... what I find annoying about portals in general is that they contain a lot of info, but you have to scroll all the way down to find out. For articles you have a summary of headers at the top. I was thinking maybe we could insert some kind of navigation bar, like {{browsebar}}, perhaps under the first box? Maybe it's not a good idea 'cause there are no other portals using it.
Also, shouldn't we list Portal:Molecular and Cellular Biology as related?--Steven Fruitsmaak | Talk 13:56, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the change. I inserted Molecular and Cellular Biology portal, but couldn't find better image. I think the browsebar on the first box should be changed not to show Art, atc... but our boxes. What do you think? Other: I saw a Quotes box in Molecular and Cellular Biology portal. I would like to create one. What do you think of that? NCurse   work 16:05, 6 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't think Mol&Cel portal should have a better image, since it's the image they use on their portal...
  • OK.
  • I insert it.
  • I think the browsebar with the links to Art etc. should remain because it is standard for portals to have it I think. Since you like the idea of a bar with our boxes, I'll start one.
  • Please let me know when ready.
  • As you probably noticed...
  • Sure I think it would be nice to have a quotes box! Maybe it could be inserted under the Newsbox.
  • I'll create it today.
Nice quotes! I've edited the one about zebras from the wikipedia article...
  • Great! :) Interesting topic and good article... :) I didn't even know that we could write articles for WikiNews.
  • It's a Wiki, no? :-D
  • I prefer the Selected Article to have a wikilink to the subject, like Tooth enamel instead of Tooth enamel. I noticed you changed this starting from "Tuberculosis". Was there a reason? It's not thát important to me, but I think we should stick to one style convention...
  • Sorry. It is a habit on hunwiki and I get used to it. I'll follow your change. :)
  • No problemo.

hi,

I think it is correct, but it should be "featured on the Main Page", not "published".

(Though it's a bit hard to translate something out of context… I don't know what you want to emphasize, if your main point is that there are separate votes for featured articles and for articles on main page, it should be like "in the Hungarian Wikipedia articles must go through another voting process to be featured on the Main Page" or something like that.)

Anyway, if this Signpost is a serious something, I guess a native English speaker will proofread it when you submit it :) – Alensha   talk 17:05, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

FA review edit

Hi, I like this idea of yours a lot, it should speed things up a lot. We need to be careful, though, with sections that don't have people signed up, they will have had much less debate and analysis than others. When you signed to say we should include all these, does that mean you have checked every article to see if there's an edit war on any of them? I've been working through the countries on the Country Review page in that sort of way. By the way, I am currently grading final exams from summer school, and I should have a bit more time to work on this by Monday. Thanks for all of your work! Walkerma 13:52, 11 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

pageblanking =/= vandalism edit

Hi, and thanks for fixing several blanked pages. But please check the edit history before you revert; for example this and this clearly weren't vandalism: the original author blanked the page. And here the user wanted to delete the redirect, so you should have posted a link to WP:RfD on his talk page after reverting. So anyway, thanks for your work, but please think twice before calling something vandalism, and always check the page history. --Zoz (t) 15:54, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

August Esperanza Newsletter edit

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.
Signed...

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

MEDGENP article rating for 1.0 edit

Good idea, I will start rating articles from the bottom of the list. It would be good to put a {{todo}} on the Talk page to say what is missing or to be cleaned up. Hope you had a good break I'm away from 31 Aug for 5 days, but will do as much as I can before that. --apers0n 16:52, 27 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think it's best to put a {{todo}} on every talk page, even if it's an empty one, as it may give editors something to focus on. Ideally a {{todo priority}} template (most of them will be {{todo priority|9}} as they are not linked to by many pages).--apers0n 18:38, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've been too busy this week to do much on the MEDGENP article rating, but I have seen that the todo box makes a real difference to some of the articles, it gives people something to focus on. I will continue from the bottom. --apers0n 20:02, 9 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Regarding WikiProjects edit

To the best of my own inadequate knowledge, (I joined the WikiProject Council last week), I believe that we are right now discussing how to construct the list of existing WikiProjects, and specifically addressing whether or not inactive projects should be included. I am not aware of whether anyone has any specific intentions of trying in any way to formally close or delete projects. I doubt we would be able to anyway, although at some point, depending upon the discussion, we might indicate to members of a particular project that they might be best able to achieve their own goals by merging into a larger project and suggest that they consider doing so. If you have any particular input you would like to share on these matters, I would more than welcome you to offer it. I note that you are a qualified and active editor with substantial medical expertise and activity in more than one project. I believe that you, like anyone else, including me, would be more than welcome to join the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council, and that any input you might be able to offer or contacts you might be able to make, particularly within your own areas of expertise, would be very valuable. I think we only have one other member who has any real qualifications in medicine, except possibly on the receiving end. If you would be so inclined, I for one would heartily welcome you to the project. Badbilltucker 15:39, 29 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Greetings from the World Outside the Great Plain… :D edit

(It always amazes me how much a user's appreciation of Miskolc can increase when said user needs me to do something… :) I've read the Signpost article and made some corrections though I don't really know how this thing is supposed to look and how long it should be. I translated the titles of the recent press releases 'cause there's no point in mentioning them in Hungarian and their title at least reveals something about their content, but now I really don't know whether it's a wise idea to select these articles of all the articles that were published about us – I know these are the most recent ones, but 3 of the 4 articles you selected are either about policital stuff or the plagium thing with Népszabadság.

Also, you didn't mention our portals :(

BTW why were those pictures selected? The Parliament photos and that Szigetvár park are nice, maybe even the photo of that ruin is good, but that church and that market hall… I don't know… there's nothing interesting about them. What was your main intention when selecting the pictures? Shouldn't we include well-known Hungary-specific images like… ugh… well… like the big yellow church in the main square of some city in the middle of the big Puszta? :D (BTW one Miskolc-related photo will be added. No, you can't do anything to prevent it. :)

Too bad we don't have "Features pictures" like EnWiki does. (wait… you just gave me an idea… :)
