Dealing with threats of trouble outside of Wikipedia

Hello. I noticed that at least one user involved in Plum Grove Junior High School was under pressure to somehow get a Wikipedia page deleted, even though that's a Wikipedia community decision. I don't know if you are also involved. RMs for "History of the X in Y"

Shouldn't you just file all those as one multi-article RM instead of forcing people to go to twenty different places to comment about the same issue? —BarrelProof (talk) 01:45, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

I understand the frustration that may come with the large number of RMs. However, I feel like there may have been frustration had I not segmented the discussion into pieces. This is for the following reasons:
  • The number of pages to be renamed is quite large, and to put them all into one discussion is excessive.
  • While most of the pages are "History of the X in Y", not all of them are.
  • Groups such as the Huns are almost universally referred to with "the", whereas groups like "African Americans" are almost never described with that definite article. Each ethnic group falls somewhere on a spectrum between these two extremes, and this is largely what determines what the title of the article should be.
  • Forcing discussion about the merits of so many different group names into one thread would be needlessly confusing.
In deciding how to organize the RMs, I elected to group them by ethnic group rather than by geographic location, the form of the article title, or other factors. Reasonable people may disagree with this organizational choice, but I hope that it allows more in depth discussion regarding each ethnic group. Mysterymanblue (talk) 02:18, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Objection to the order of your sweeping moves RE: The Jews

Hi Mysterymanblue: (A) You should NOT have commenced the WP:RM at Talk:History of the Jews in Abkhazia#Requested move 5 June 2020 without getting some clarity on this complex proposal at your discussion at Wikipedia talk:Article titles#Use of "the" in titles about ethnic groups. (B) You should NOT have gotten involved with sweeping editorial proposals for WP:JUDAISM articles without first consulting with the hundreds of WP:EXPERT editors at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Jewish history. (C) You failed to notify, by placing a notification at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Judaism of your sweeping and radical proposal. (D) and most egregiously, you are in WP:RMCM (Wikipedia:Requested moves/Controversial) territory, and you ignore the consequent outrage with weak excuses. Hi IZAK. I appreciate your passion on this matter. I sincerely apologize if I failed to follow any norms in creating my RM on the use of the phrase "the Jews" in article titles. I certainly did not realize that RMs must be notified on deletion sorting pages, so that's my bad. My intention was to create a thoughtful dialog on this issue, and I hope that it can still be salvaged. I understand your perspective that I should have started other discussions prior to making the RMs. The reason that I did not do this is because the RM itself is an opportunity for discussion. I initially sought guidance at Wikipedia talk:Article titles#Use of "the" in titles about ethnic groups, but I soon realized that it would not make sense to codify the use of "the" in Wikippedia policy. This is because a different policy would probably have to be created for each ethnic group, as English, in all of its incongruities, treats each name differently. I do recognize that these requested article moves may be controversial, which is why I followed the proper policy for potentially controversial page moves. As to your comment on my response, I believe that I responded appropriately to the cool-headed comments of those engaging in the discussion. I will not be withdrawing my RM as I would like continue to see thoughtful discussion on the best way to address Jews in the title of these articles. Mysterymanblue (talk) 20:55, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
@Mysterymanblue: Thanks for your calm response. I do feel strongly about this, mainly because of sensitivity about the topic and how it is phrased. There are times when plain "Jews" is used, but in the case of the long-standing articles about "History of the Jews in ____" that has been standard editorial policy for almost 20 years on WP (I have been an editor in Jewish history articles for over 17 years), almost all editors understood that in the case of these history articles, to have the word "Jews" dangling in mid-air without the "the" sounds almost pejorative and derogatory to the Jews themselves. @IZAK: I apologize if I offended you (or others) in seeking this name change. I can assure you that it is not my intention to make these article titles sound more pejorative, but rather exactly the opposite. The RM is based largely on the recent(ish) trend of referring to ethnic groups with "the" falling out of favor in the media. I created a large number of RMs for articles referencing various ethnic groups with a definite article ("the African Americans", "the Hispanics and Latinos", etc.). For most of these RMs, precedent already exists on Wikipedia to show that dropping the article is preferred, or the name change is very obvious. This precedent does not exist for articles about the Jewish people, and there were already a large number of articles using "the Jews" in their titles. However, to my ears, "the Jews" (when used in the context of "History of the Jews in X") sounds more incorrect and (yes) slightly more pejorative than "History of Jews in X". While I recognize that the name of each ethnic group should be judged on its own (which is why I did not lump all the RMs for various ethnicities together), I simply did not feel that "History of Jews in Baltimore" and "History of Chinese Americans in Baltimore" should be treated any differently, so I created the RM. I did not see any major prior discussions about this issue on Wikipedia, except for a few unilateral, uncontroversial moves by you others and one RM at History of the Jews in Kurdistan, so I am glad that the topic will have been thoroughly discussed, even if no name change comes out of it. Regarding your upload of Sousa's marches

Hi, Thanks a lot for uploading all the Sousa marches in Wikimedia Commons, they helped me a lot while creating the article "List of marches composed by John Philip Sousa". I have used many of your uploaded files in the article. Just a concern. You have uploaded 8 marches in Category:The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa: Vol. 6 (1922-1928) , but the official website states that

"PLEASE NOTE: Only six marches from Volume 6 are in the public domain and presently have Marine Band editions. Recordings of non-PD marches are only available for streaming on YouTube. To purchase a published edition of a march, please visit the sheet music vendor of your choice." (Source; Archived Source)

When I clicked on download entire volume, only 6 marches were downloaded. They were:

  1. Old Ironsides - (uploaded commons version)
  2. Marquette University March - (uploaded commons version)
  3. Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company - (uploaded commons version)
  4. Nobles of the Mystic Shrine - (uploaded commons version)
  5. March of the Mitten Men - (uploaded commons version)
  6. The Dauntless Battalion - (uploaded commons version)

Apart from these, two other marches are also uploaded by you.

  1. The Black Horse Troop (uploaded commons version)
  2. The National Game (uploaded commons version)

Hi Kavyansh.Singh, thanks for your interest in the marches I uploaded and your attention to the licensing information! The message on the marine band's website is indeed out of date. You can find their reasoning here; they based the evaluation of which compositions were in the public domain on whether the marches were published before 1923. Of course, since then all works published between January 1, 1923 and January 1, 1926 have also entered the public domain, but they neglected to update their site. It looks good! A few thoughts:
  • I am unfamiliar with the policy on leads for lists, but sometimes they are unnecessary. Most lists do not start with a long explanation, so this list does not have to. For example, List of compositions by John Philip Sousa does not have a lead. That being said, I don't think there's anything necessarily wrong with a lead for a list article.
  • I went through and copyedited the page. If you don't think the changes I made are helpful, feel free to change them back.
  • In running text, the title of a march should always be in quotation marks. (You don't need to quote the march in the table, though.)
  • In footnote a, you say something very similar to the following sentence ("A few of his marches are..."). Try not to repeat information.
  • The phrase "...only those compositions... original versions are listed." is a bit confusing. Try rewording it.
  • "However" is probably not necessary at the beginning of the second paragraph; it is a bit jarring as a transition word.
  • The structure of the first paragraph is pretty good. However, the second and third paragraphs are a bit awkward because you switch from topic to topic. For example, you start the second paragraph with a discussion of the fame of his marches (this should be with the last sentence of the first paragraph, in my opinion), and then you list the universities for which he composed marches. This shift in topic should involve some sort of transition.
  • The third paragraph appears to be about his legacy - all the important stuff he did, essentially. This is good focus for the paragraph; however, it still reads a bit choppily because the pieces of information feel too disconnected. Try adding some transition words or restructuring it.
  • The list of marches looks good. I like the table. I don't think you need the "Details" thing; you can probably just have "Description" and "Audio" as their own, separate columns.
  • I noticed that you put subheadings within the table. I don't think this is standard practice. If you want to break up the table, you should probably just make three separate tables under the subheadings "Early years (1873-1880)", "Leader of the Marine Band (1880-1892)", and "Later years (1892-1932)".
  • I don't think "Description" is the right name for the column because you don't really describe the march. (A description would describe the march musically, in my opinion.) Maybe change the name of that column to "Notes" or something similar?
  • I will copy edit the "Description" column after I post this response.

Hi @Mysterymanblue: Most of the lists don't have a lead, but since I have plans to nominate for Featured List, the criteria says "It has an engaging lead that introduces the subject and defines the scope and inclusion criteria." Hi @Mysterymanblue: I have made various changes. The cell of title of march is made grey in colour; column name is changed from "Description" to "Notes"; Subheadings are removed, instead "Contents" box is added with anchor tag as other FL's have. Few changes are made in lead too. I noticed that you have copy-edited various description of marches, which I surely found helpful. Would appreciate if you could complete the CE of the table. Sound files

I am sorry, I reverted your addition of sound files of La mer at the top of the article. I don't believe sound files should ever begin an article, at all, but now these are arrangements for band, with a completely wrong impression for newcomers to the music. I believe that no sound is better than arrangement, but may be the only one. Please discuss the matter on Talk:La mer, and tread carefully with other pieces. Positioning sound files where the music is discussed is much better than at the top, but my reservation regarding arrangements stands. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:08, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for your detailed reasoning. La mer is not my territory - otherwise it would have an infobox, possibly with a sound file under parameter "misc". I wrote about two Debussy pieces, The Little Nigar and Pour le piano, both with an infobox, and sound file rather where the music is described, and readers can compare what the read and hear. - When Debussy was approaching FA status, I was among the reviewers: many sound files were dropped, moving them to piece articles or the works list, because they held up loading of the page and seemed undue for the biography. - I bet many people arriving at La mer heard that music before. - Good luck with the discussion. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:02, 15 July 2021 (UTC)

  • @Magnolia677: Please see also WP:CSD#G4: "It excludes pages that are not substantially identical to the deleted version, pages to which the reason for the deletion no longer applies, and content that has been moved to user space or converted to a draft for explicit improvement (but not simply to circumvent Wikipedia's deletion policy)." This content is no longer substantially identical to the version that was deleted from Wikipedia all those years ago because I have changed it. Also, this reason for deletion does not apply because it is being done for the specific purpose of improving the article.
