Requesting an entry and an image be retitled.

Hello! I'm asking someone to re-title an article and an image - I recently created an entry for "Ferdinand N. Kahler, Sr." and an image of same - using one source of info, I entered the name as "Ferdinand T. Kahler, Sr." for both - but subsequent research proves his middle name was "Nickolas" and therefore, the entry and image titles need to be changed to "Ferdinand N. Kahler" - I'm asking an administrator make the changes to the page title and image so the entries are accurate.

Hey Sarah. I assume you rejected the article because of 'notability' issues. But I have included newer links - which might be helpful to point out that it indeed is an 'existing film'. The fact that the film (made in India) won a jury award at a film festival in NY - also is notable enough, no? :) Can you please review the page again when you do get the time? Hi Sarah, Don't forget that if you create an article with a title which needs to be disambiguated, like this one, then you need to provide an access route to it - in this case an addition to the (slightly non-standard!) dab page at John Gray (sometimes it just needs a hatnote). Sarah, The tip about the Comics Project is much appreciated! I admit my application to the subject is a bit like my taste in Jazz; I've heard a good bit of it, and I admire some, but am tuned to a narrow band of favorites. The relationship of Carl Barks to Comics might not be symmetrically like Dave Brubeck's to Jazz- but it is in my own mind. I might not do much other in Comics than I've done; but you've nudged me to look at what's on the Brubeck Wikipedia page on my favorite album of the Quartet, Jazz impressions of Japan... Need some help with the Witch house page.

Hi Sarah, I'm dealing with an IP user who's repeatedly altering the Witch House page, the problem is that they're continually posting a historically inaccurate, but published criticism. In addition they are publishing an irrelevant criticism by an artist who claims that the music genre is already dead. I'm one of the original label owners within the genre, beginning in the mid 2000's, and can easily give proof that the Witch House scene is both very much alive and that the criticism that is being posted over and over again by the unknown IP user needs rebuttal because it is highly dishonest and misleading and has nothing to do with an honest definition of the music genre and everything to do with some agenda that the IP user must have. Hi George. I think that the sections could probably be broken up into smaller sections based on major moments in those decades. I also think that the list of selected exhibitions could be removed or cut down to only feature notable exhibition spaces (i.e. those that might be worthy of their own articles) or just state someplace in the article that he has exhibited his art at numerous galleries in the United State. It reads like a resume, which Wikipedia really isn't a space for that. But, I write a lot of biographies and when I write artist biographies I only showcase highly notable exhibitions. Also, the section about upcoming works ("works in progress") should be removed. It's fully uncited, which isn't something we should have on a biography about a living person. Wikipedia also is not a place to house that type of information per WP:CRYSTAL. Thanks for coming by! Sarah (talk) 14:24, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

Eilenberg-Ganea theorem

Hi. I have recently posted an article on Eilenberg-Ganea theorem for submission. The article was not accepted and the reason stated was that "The content of this submission includes material that meets Wikipedia's minimum standard for inline citations". Ideally, all Wikipedia articles should be fully cited with inline citations. If they aren't, that means it's generally original research (written by you, by memory or your own personal research) and that content can be removed. This is really a well known result and almost 70 years old. I have also given reference to the original paper and books where this theorem has been stated and proved. I am really clueless why it has been removed. I have also given the inline citation in the introduction, but thanks for the reply. Regarding the Women's History project and the New Page Search with Tedderbot, Rich Farmbrough came forward to help. However, the search terms seem to be a snag. I think Rich and Tedder are trying to figure this out, but they could use someone like yourself who understands the goal of the project a bit better. See this thread on Tedder's page. Hi Sarah,

I saw you picked up the Sara Niemietz discography page for review and declined it -- I assume that was the correct action here?

Here's what happened with the article, this process might be causing some Wikipedia AfC grief.

I created the article from an articlespace search, and chose the option to create the article in draft space. The draft URI was suffixed with my username, so I figured I was in the right place. The link on the draft for publishing automatically dumps the article into AfC, instead of recognizing that my profile has enough edits to create the article.

Against my better judgement, I allowed the article to go into AfC and then watched for a few days. I spoke with the Help desk when I realized that AfC was for anonymous posters and that I could move the article to articlespace myself and at least remove one article from the huge queue. Help desk responded, "That would be Grand," but did not elaborate on whether removing the AfC template would remove the article from the queue -- which it seemed to do.

Anyway, thanks for picking up the article and I hope we are on smooth sailing for the discography from here on.

Hi there. Basically, when writing about a living person you have to cite everything. Every single sentence should be cited in some capacity. The first two sections have no citations, for example, and could easily be removed by anyone because they could be considered untrue. I know it's dramatic, but, Wikipedia can fall into legal problems (and has before) when a living person sees their biography has untrue information. Also, for additional help you can always stop by the Teahouse, they can often answer questions faster than I can :) Teahouse is here. I hope this helps! Sarah (talk) 22:09, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Is this the proper way to reply? :) Yes I was afraid that was the issue - the problem is that the parts of her profile concerning her personal life have not really received attention in the press. I will be able to find references for some of them probably concerning military service and such. But for example - am I really expected to provide references for her family's history and such?

Yup. • Teahouse reaches two month mark. The Teahouse has been live on English Wikipedia for two months now and evidence of the project's impact is beginning to show. Thank you to the hosts and Wikipedians who have helped make the Teahouse the valuable place for new editor's to seek help and feel welcome.
• April metrics report has been posted on meta! Some relevant metrics from April’s report include:

• In April, Teahouse averaged 45 questions per week.
• An average of 20 new editors visiting for the first time were served at the Teahouse, in addition to repeat guests.

Wikipedia Teahouse always keeps it classy!

• Many guests are repeat visitors: the average guest asks 1.5 questions and 22% of guests ask more than one question.

• Reports show that the Teahouse is having a positive impact on editor engagement! Comparing a sample of 75 new editors who participate in the Teahouse with a control group (of equivalent size and similar first-day editing activity) shows:

• New editors who participate in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles than the uninvited control group.
• New editor participants also make an average six times more global edits.
• Average Teahouse participants add 26 times more bytes of content that survive on Wikipedia (meaning content that isn't reverted or deleted) than the uninvited control group.

• More Teahouse participants remain active on Wikipedia at least 10 days later. Among the 224 editors in our three experimental groups, 28 percent of new editors who participate in the Teahouse were still active on Wikipedia at least ten days later, compared with 12 percent who received an invitation but didn't actively participate in the Teahouse, and only 5 percent from a similar uninvited control group.
• Teahouse visibility is a challenge, as we try to make the Teahouse visible to new editors, invitation has been the the main way of informing new editors about the Teahouse, and while that is a powerful tool, many new editors go uninvited. This is one of the most amazing things I have seen come from Wikipedia recently. While I stated that I wasn't able to help take part in collecting data, I'm glad it was done. This has truly caused definitive improvements to the encyclopedia. Scope

You have recently removed articles of pre-20th century women from Sarah Stierch as not fitting the project scope. But the project Scope currently states that "The biography of a woman born before 1900 is generally within the scope of this project." H Niels. The issue with that article is that the only reliable sources you use show that his boats and organization (or whatnot) have won awards. There are no citations for his life, who he is, and why he is important. Even though an organization he runs or boats he owns have been awarded things, that doesn't necessarily make HIM notable. Besides, uncited material about living people we will have to remove, because anyone can write anything about anyone and say it is true when it necessarily is not, so for liability reasons we have to have full citations. So right now, he doesn't quite seem notable enough. Another good place to ask for advice is the Teahouse. I hope this helps a bit! Help with Christine 'Peng Peng' Lee

Hi, I’ve been working on the article on Christine ‘Peng Peng’ Lee that you recently reviewed and I’ve just resubmitted it. It’s the first article that I’ve worked on and I’m a bit nervous. She is a notable athlete and meets many of the criteria for gymnasts which I realize I wasn’t making clear. I was hoping that you could help me with a few things. First, she goes by both Christine Lee and Peng Peng Lee and I want people to be able to find her page regardless of the name they search for. Will that happen automatically? I might have caused a problem

Hi again. I a week or so emailed the zhaoqing government, the china pabst blue ribbon company, and a travel company in china asking for pictures that I could use so I could enrich the different pages. From the zhaoqing government I requested all the statistics, history, things of interest in their city. I also signed up for their website and left my email address. I asked for them to give me many sources so as to be objective. And for the travel company I gave them my wiki username so they could follow my progress because they said they were interested in the page. I am new and innocent so maybe in retrospect this wasnt a good idea. I should of remembered that it is CHINA and they don't follow the same rules in terms of ethics, objectivity and law. But I just saw some spam from a travel company on the [[Jiangmen}} page which I just recently bookmarked that came from a Guangzhou IP address. And it just happens that a few days ago I was infected by a malware/virus that I thought I had extinguished but it turns out my friend in china had been recieving a copy of an old email I had sent her 25 times or so per minute and she thought I was sending it. And this email to her included references that I made about not liking the central government, the 50 cent party, a link to a HK religious institution and an attachment of the freegate software (to bypass the great firewall). I am having trouble believing this is all a coincidence because I know how things work in China. I just wanted you to know this because I'm concerned that this kind of behavior might continue and I don't want people to blame me. I hope you can understand. Hey! This happens a lot. Besides, the statistics you would get from that company/org you might not be able to use because they are primary sources/original research, which we can't use in Wikipedia. If you find that editors/IPs are creating spam or conflict of interest (which is not allowed, either) then you can do a few things. You can report the page to be protected if it's getting edited by a lot of people in a non-positive manner. You can also warn them if you'd like, see here for templates about that. If you find that there are problems and things aren't changing you can ask help from admins here. I'm not an admin, so I can't block people, etc. So, perhaps that can help. It's happened to me also with museum people, so China or museum people or whoever - most people who work for orgs and companies aren't familiar with how Wikipedia works and dive in and it often doesn't work out ;) Sarah (talk) 22:46, 18 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by! In that submission, you use YouTube, press releases, a blog, a publishing house (which basically is a company working for the person who you are writing about), Amazon, a few links to reviews which don't actually go to the direct link about Lobel (i.e. it's just search results), a resume, and so forth. All of those are not considered reliable sources in the land of Wikipedia. The links I placed in that text discusses the verifability of content like that. Anyone can say anything when it's self published or self-submitted. All of those websites require the authors to submit content, or have someone writing something on their blog, etc, and that isn't verifiable. This link discusses how you can identify a reliable source. Things like articles in the New York Times, on NBC news, journal articles that extensively cite the subject, etc, are considered reliable sources. Basically it's "Articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy." I hope this helps a bit. If these types of sources are unavailable then your subject may not be notable enough to be included in Wikipedia at this time! For further assistance you can also stop by the Teahouse. Hey Sarah, Sorry to bother you, but I have been working on the piece and need some advice. I realized that my referencing logic was too academic, where references lead to more information many times, and have fixed that issue (creating links where those are due). I do, however, view official press releases by 3rd party institutions, such as universities or granting agencies, as somewhat independent, and feel like those might help provide credibility to various career milestones. Notes on the Teahouse

Hello Sarah,

I understand the Teahouse is a pilot project and I wanted to share with you a few of my experiences that might be helpful in its evaluation.

I find the Teahouse invaluable not so much for answering my own questions, but rather in pointing out questions I would not have thought to ask. For pretty much every question that has been posted, I've made a significant effort to track down the answer myself. This has brought me in contact with documentation and capabilities of wikipedia that I would not have known of otherwise. As an added benefit, I can then compare my (usually unspoken) answer to the answers provided by more experienced editors.

As someone who spends a fair amount of time thinking about how learning occurs, I'm impressed. One particular factor has allowed this to happen: both guests and hosts are allowed to answer questions. If answers were restricted only to hosts, the magic vanishes: I would no longer have the impetus to potentially make a contribution, thus I would be less likely to track down that acronym I hadn't seen before or examine the article in question. In contrast, the education I've gotten from reading the old RfA logs has been more wide-ranging but also more shallow: there's no opportunity there to sanity-check what I learned, or for further discussion.

I first came to Wikipedia to repair the damage caused by a particular net loon I knew from talk.origins on USENET. I found the process and the community fascinating, but didn't see myself as someone who would make a contribution. The interactions I've had at the Teahouse pushed me past the tipping point; I have started (cautiously, haltingly) to contribute to articles.

I hope the Teahouse continues past the pilot stage. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help make that happen.

Elizabeth Stanton

Hi Sarah,

I thought you might be able to help with this. I've been trying to get an approval for Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Elizabeth_Stanton, but no one will approve it. I kinda have a loss for words on this subject as she has a TV show currently airing all over the United States, and it has been renewed for a second season. I have no idea why she isn't notable enough for a Wikipedia page. The sources are reliable, although the editors think they aren't. She does have a page for her TV show, Elizabeth Stanton's Great Big World, but not for herself. I could include a bunch of minor filmography credits, would this be helpful?

Any input would be greatly appreciated as I'd love to get this page created.

Hi there! I did approve the article. However, the article needs major improvement regarding sources. Most of these sources aren't really quality based (i.e. it'd be great to have coverage from reliable quality news sources like major news programs, magazines, newspapers, not just teenager pop magazines). I'm also going to be removing all of the uncited content about her. Wikipedia can't have uncited content about living people in the encyclopedia - because anyone can say anyone about anyone and we could get sued! So, until you have full reliable sources for the uncited content about her personal life, we have to remove it. Also, when writing encyclopedic biographies we always call someone by their surname not their first name. So I'm fixing that, too! I hope you don't mind the critique - Wikipedia is a wacky weird world! I'm moving across the country this week, so if you need more help or quicker assistance you can stop by the Teahouse, which is a super awesome place for new editors to get help :) It's tough to learn the ropes here, but once you do - it's only up from here!!
