Governor of Puerto Rico in 1898

Hi Tony, there is a BIG problem in the list of governors of PR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Governors_of_Puerto_Rico) but I don't know how to fix it. I thought maybe you can figure out the cause because I am at my wits ends and have no clue how this problem is possible despite spending a considerable amt of time on this.

This problem is this: There was a succession of 5 governors in 1898:
Ricardo de Ortega y Diez
Andrés González Muñoz
Ricardo de Ortega y Diez
General Manuel Macías Casado
Ricardo de Ortega y Diez

with one of them being this Ricardo de Ortega y Diez. Well, this Ricardo de Ortega y Diez has the picture of an athlete (one Ariel Ortega) in the List of Governors article - obviously not the Spanish Generalissimo picture you would expect!!!!!!!!!!

The odd thing is that when you click on the name for Ricardo de Ortega y Diez, Wikipedia brings up an article about him and, within that article, Wikipedia shows the correct picture for him ([[3]]). But even more monumentally odd is that both, that picture of Ricardo de Ortega y Diez showing in his article and the picture of the athlete as accessed via the List of Governors of PR article, both of them point to the same "File:Ortega.jpg".

I am clueless. I would like to fix it but don't know how. Some weeks ago, HQ worked on it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Mercy11#List_of_Governors) and he knew of a similar problem dealing with the PRBL logo. HQ believes it's related to persistent cache. But wow! this stuff is months old...plus I believe it also happens with other computers that have never been to the List of Governors [4] page before. (I am not sure about this one but intend to check it out within the next day or two).

Are you having the same problem I am having from your PC? Of course, your PC has probably been to List of Governors before, making yours a bad test case (i.e., if your PC displays the Argentinian atlethe in the List of Governors, it could still be blamed on the cache theory...)

FYI, at least at one point, the atlethe's article had the picture of the General in it (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Ariel_Ortega&direction=next&oldid=336334473) also!!!!

This whole experience makes me mistrust Wikipedia quite a bit for the first time - if the pic for the Governor is wrong, how many other things might be wrong also???

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you comrade! Mercy11 (talk) 01:31, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

Hey, you DO sound all refreshed !!! Hope you enjoyed you vacation in San Francisco,,, hey, if you work hard, you deserve to play hard too !!!! Hahahah, how's that for a cliché!!!
So, no problem take your time - I actully just post that message yesterday. Take care, Mercy11 (talk) 01:25, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Hi again. UPDATE: I am confirming that when accessed from a PC out on the Internet (no wikiuser logged in, just plain IP address), and one that has never been to that page before, the atlethe's photo displays, not the Governor's, where the Governor's photo should. This disqualifies the persistent cache theory, it seems to me. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 01:54, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
  • The article looks great again! Just wanted to thank you for having taken time for this. Unfortunately I don't have any stars to give out (like you do), but my thanks nevertheless! It was no good for a Featured Article to have that significant error in it. Thanks, Mercy11 (talk) 13:32, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

Cinco de Mayo

Sorry about the avalanche of messages. Was wondering if you could help me lock Cinco de Mayo. I know this is probably not within your wikiprojects, but I don't know about a policy prohibiting an admin from locking a page that's outside his project circle. I requested a lock in the past ([5]) and it got done([6]& [7]), but only for a month.

I don't know if its the beer associated with it but seems vandals were just waiting persistenly until the lock expired to jump on the article and ruin it. Well, it's happened now again for a 3rd time (at least since I got involved, about 2 months ago). A quick look a the article's history in just the last 7 or so days ([8]) reveals what I mean. And with the real 5 de mayo calendar day just 2 weeks away, the vandalism is only bound to get worse and these kids are just now starting to plan their 5 de Mayo beer parties. In short, can you lock the article? The longer the lock, the better. Thanks! Mercy11 (talk) 02:04, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks!!!!! and enjoy your Corona! (hahaha) Mercy11 (talk) 01:56, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
Tony, it has helped tremendously. Unfortunately, now they are taking it on the Talk Page. To keep it clean, it would help if it (or some part of it) could get Archived into, say, archive #3. What do u think? I've got no clue how it's done or even if it can be done by someone other than the article's "guardian"(?), admin, or something of the sort. Can u fill me in a bit. If you agree and you want/can do it yourself, the merrier yet! Thanks! Mercy11 (talk) 03:06, 29 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks - They should be all sober by then... Mercy11 (talk) 00:56, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Hum,,, on 2nd thought, I still see a lot of activity -- even 2 days later... Seems the beer effect isn't entirely worn out yet! One suggestion would be to monitor the 2 pages for the next few days or so, at least over the weekend, and see... Just a thought, Mercy11 (talk) 01:33, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
Tony, check this out (the post by angelswalk, about 1/2 way down the page) : http://www2.scnow.com/scp/news/local/grand_strand/article/myrtle_beach_celebrates_cinco_de_mayo_with_a_weekend_festival/147657/
Seems you got the correct version just in teh nick of time and it propagated quickly thru the internet !!! A great reason to work the PR articles to their highest expression!!! Greetings, Mercy11 (talk) 02:35, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks but...

Hi Tony - Certain edits that you made to the Carmen Gonzalez page are incorrect. For example - the restaurant is no longer open, and the Esquire quote had been edited and written in a way that it was grammatically correct, so the punctuation that you removed needed to be there. Additionally, it did not require its own section because, as Wikipedia Help representatives indicated, it is not 'encyclopedic' so I don't understand why that change was made.

I am aware that we are allowed to make edits to other Wikipedia pages. But in the future, before making these kinds of edits without proper research, I suggest that you contact the original editor to review your ideas. If you have any doubts, please review the following link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:OWN

Thank you.

  • "Ouch!" This is the "Thanks" that I get for trying to bring a poorly written article up to Wikipedia standards. Maybe you should check out my articles before telling me to check "Wikipedia:OWN" as if I am a person who has not the proper knowledge to make the proper edits. You are new here, therefore let me advice you that before you go around citing Wikipedia policy to experienced editors, you should read our policies and understand them, a fact which is obvious that haven't done since you have posted unreliable references. Personal websites, Facebook, Myspace and so on are not reliable sources per policy. To tell you the truth, that article, which is nothing but a self-promotional vanity article, isn't even worth my time. Tony the Marine (talk) 02:51, 25 April 2010 (UTC)

CPT Ivan Castro

Good Morning:

We are editing the wikipedia page for CPT Ivan Castro under his direction. I see that changes were made to some of the items we edited yesterday because of "unsourced mess". How do we site him as the source? The changes we are maknig coming directly from him under the direction of LTC Dummar.

Thank You,

  • Hello 2LT Basquez, You can tell Capt. Castro that I had the pleasure of writing his article in Wikipedia. The article when published in the "Did You Know" section of the main page established a new record of readership which hasn't been broken yet. The article was the subject of vandalism by Anti-American editors and that is why I keep a watchful eye over it and the cintents that are added.

I wanted to speak to him personally and was given a phone number by Brig. Gen. Hector Pagan, but unfortunately I lost it. In regard to your question. You can list the additional decorations or any other information here and I will do the rest. Tell Capt. Castro that I am proud of him and that I believe him to be a positive and inspirational role model for our youth. That is why I wrote about him. Tony the Marine (talk) 18:32, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello Tony, and thanks fpr your help, support, contributions, etc etc to the 5 de mayo article and its surrondings...I don't know if you ever monitored that article before, but every year is the same story, vandalism left and right, etc.

I was wandering if you wouldn't mind taking a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponce,_Puerto_Rico#U.S._Invasion . It is about military history, and I know that's one of your forte. ...Maybe the wording is not right somewhere, or it can be tweaked somewhere else. Maybe you have suggestions somewhere. Maybe the cited references have not been paraphrased entirely well, whatever. If you can, it would be great! If not, well, it won't be!!! Thanks!!! Mercy11 (talk) 00:19, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey Tony; what happened here? I don't really like this new format, it not only looks plain, but the "search" function is located in an odd place. When did it go "live"? By the way, have you been following Javier Culson? - Caribbean~H.Q. 01:46, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi, hope you don't mind I break in, but would that note ("added "See also" - note: The "See also" section should always be included in all Puerto Rican related articles") [9] also applies, like, to all the barrios de ponce articles, etc???
Also, when does an article stop being a "stub"? For some articles I created, or significantly modified in what appeared to be a solo mode, I just made a judgment call and janked the thing out. Javier Culson for example, has been a stub soince creation over a year ago, yet it has grwon over 2-1/2 x since. Is there a standard criteria to follow? Military Article Prospect: Joseph B. Aviles

Description:

On 28 September 1925, Chief Gunner's Mate Joseph B. Aviles transferred from the U.S. Navy to the Coast Guard. Born in Puerto Rico, Aviles became the first known Hispanic-American chief petty officer in the Coast Guard. During World War II he received a war-time promotion to chief warrant officer, becoming the first Hispanic American to reach that level as well.

From USCG site. fyi... There are many more Hispanic-American USCG accomplishments listed on the link, although with limited information and almost no Biographical data. Quazgaa (talk) 13:57, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Great Article Tony! Got some Constructive Comments: This question arises because I am familiar with the US Navy (served 6 years). The Term Chief Gunner's Mate to me is a Chief Petty Officer with the rating of Gunner's Mate (E-7). So If he was not the First Hispanic Chief Petty Officer of the US Navy then who was? Greetings

Hey Tony. Even tough I dislike the way that Puerto Ricans were forcefully introduced to war on behalf of the states, I respect the work that people like you do to defend what's ours. You deserve recognition for your great work as a professional as well as you quality as a friend. This day should not commemorate senseless wars, invasions or violence... It should serve to remember the kind of people that undertake the task, the souls lying behind worn-out uniforms and irrelevant flags.

Rodriguez-Trias has one interesting story; I would like to know more about her work in the Middle East, its so rare seeing someone from the "developed world" going there to do something constructive. - Caribbean~H.Q. 17:04, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!!!

Hey, hope you are having a great weekend!!! Mercy11 (talk) 21:33, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Your words carry a transcendental message, and war is not an experience I wish anyone. I learned a long time ago that most wars can be avoided if governments could learn to live among each others like they expect us to live among ourselves. Benito Juarez once said, "Entre los individuos, como entre las Naciones, el respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz." But it could be reversed to say, "Among Nations, as among individuals, respect for the rights of other Nations, is peace." Have you read about the Trail of Tears? How about the Manifest Destiny? Like most wars, there are no winners, only victims and losers. Oddly, under the belief they have some new light never before shone on anyone, world leaders - without failure - make the same stupid mistakes that other leaders have been making since biblical times. Strangely enough, though, most these leaders graduated with degrees in political science, foreign service, history, law, and the like, meaning they aware, more so than the average citizen, of what those stupid mistakes were, and thus we would hope they will not make them again. But it almost never happens. Why? Because of greed. It is pitiful. Thanks for your good faith sacrifice Tony. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 23:02, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Been trying to "Contribute" to the National Register of Historic Places-listed Puerto Rico. These Images are posted here. It seems these images have been Challenged as non-public domain images although there are listed as Public Access. Anyways, All of these images were taken by personel hired by the Puerto Rican State Historic Preservation office link (State Govt Entitiy). I am inquiring to see if OTRS permission can be obtained for all images taken by PRSHP officers like was done with {{PD-PRGov-OfficialPortraits}} and {{PD-PRGov-IPC}}. There are hundreds of these images on the NPS focus website and I think they would be beneficial to the respective articles in question. Discussion can be viewed here on my talk page. Category:LGBT people of Puerto Rican descent

Hi Tony. I created the category LGBT people of Puerto Rican descent after another Wikipedian deleted 14 entries from Category:LGBT people from Puerto Rico on the grounds that those people were US based or born. The new category I created is now being considered for merging with Category:LGBT Hispanic and Latino American people, which would eliminate the possibility to easily link the two groups of Puerto Ricans. Question

Dear Tony, I have a question for you. Is it acceptable Wikipedia practice to have exactly the same paragraph appear in six different articles? The text in question is the following (or some version thereof):

On January 26, 2006, Monsiváis joined other international figures and Latin American authors such as Nobel-laureate Gabriel García Márquez, Mario Benedetti, Ernesto Sabato, Thiago de Mello, Eduardo Galeano, Pablo Armando Fernández, Jorge Enrique Adoum, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Mayra Montero, Ana Lydia Vega and singer/composer Pablo Milanés, in demanding sovereignty for Puerto Rico.[13][14] This coalition added their names and signatures to the Latin American and Caribbean Congress' Proclamation for the Independence of Puerto Rico, which approved a resolution favoring the commonwealth's right to assert its independence, as ratified unanimously by political parties hailing from twenty-two Latin American countries in November 2006.[13] Galeano's demand for the recognition of Puerto Rico's independence was obtained at the behest of the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP).[13]

This same text (rewritten for the person's first name) appears in six articles:

I was just curious, because this seems strange to me and not good practice (to have the same text repeated, verbatim, in six articles). I suggested that it be changed in Talk:Carlos Monsiváis. Thanks!--Lawrlafo (talk) 08:59, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Well, technically since the content is in the public domain, there is nothing against its reproduction be it here or anywhere else. The matter would be more of a MoS issue, but even then it would be somewhat unimportant. I suggest that the paragraph is simply slightly rewritten to avoid being repetitive. - Caribbean~H.Q. 10:27, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

"OTRS" granted a ticket number to the PRSHP images and posted the tag (above) on the images which I sent them. 3. I proceeded to create the template which you saw in my workshop with the OTRS ticket number, which will replace the tags. It took some doing, but in the end it was worth it. Hi, I was on vacation and couldn't get to WP stuff as quickly as before, but looks like you've taken care of things. Thanks! Mercy11 (talk) 04:47, 11 July 2010 (UTC) Yeah! it looks good! Mercy11 (talk) 02:58, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

AWARD

Tony, Your time and effort spent on the PRSHPO has inspired me to create an award and make you the first recipient:

  The Hats Off Barnstar
This Hats Off Barnstar award goes to Tony the Marine for his dedication and support in acheiving PD status for a multitude of images from PRSHPO. This single contribution, which goes above and beyond Wikipedia, will greatly contribute to Puerto Rican related articles. Bravo Zulu! My Hats off to you Tony. Re:Wall of Honor

Wow Tony, I did not know you had one. I am Speechless, but I can still type to say: un millon de Gracias! Quazgaa (talk) 00:35, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Ricardo Alvarez-Diaz

Hey Tony, while working with the project's assessment backlog this article came up. To be honest, I just can't see what exactly makes him "notable" enough to meet the standards. As a matter of fact the article itself is written more like a resumé than anything else (WP:VANITY?). What do you think? - Caribbean~H.Q. 09:06, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Same here: Juan Carlos Vega. - Caribbean~H.Q. 09:22, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Ditto: El Tío. - Caribbean~H.Q. 09:26, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Hugo Margenat

nice article, very interesting man, BTW did you watch the inauguration for Mayaguez 2010??El Johnson (talk) 22:05, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I was lucky to attend, it was a great event, although the TV transmition was not very good, and it did not do the event justice.El Johnson (talk) 22:19, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Hugo Margenat

I never heard of him but I am interested since I am very interested in metaphysical studies. I want to write an article on Carlos Martin, who is one of the leading experts on ufology. He has written about numerous incidents about extraterrestial encounters in Puerto Rico, especially heavy activity in Lago Cartagena (Cabo Rojo), El Yunque, and Vieques. He recently interviewed a nuyorican family from Rincon who had a series of paranormal activity. The incidents scared them so much they moved. They have signed sworn statements and even filmed (using a cell phone camera) what is reportedly a spacecraft in the wooded area behind their home. Eerie, but worthy of investigation.--XLR8TION (talk) 22:06, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Coat of Arms

I know you are very good with pictures, graphics, diagrams, OTRS, copyrights, and the like, so I am wondering how you would address this problem. Turns out that the Ponce government coat of arms was uploaded in very low resolution, and it's almost useless if you want to follow the short narrative here > Ponce coat of arms. I found another one at this location (http://boricuaonline.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=1) that has a much greater resolution. But that site says Copyright, bla, blah, blah, which makes no sense cause a C-O-A is a C-O-A, so they must have taken it from some other site themselves, such as here>>> (MUNICIPIO). How would go about justifiying an upload of a coat-of-arms with greater resolution? Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. Mercy11 (talk) 22:12, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

File:University of Turabo logo.png, that is a non-free logo use rationale I used for the Turabo Logo. It should only be used in conjunction with one article and placed inside of an infobox usually... Hope this Helps.Quazgaa (talk) 01:30, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks guys, I brought it in claiming PD due to over 75 years since the death of the author, and no one's complained yet. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 21:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Hugo Margenat

No I haven't heard of him. Was he born in Ponce ??? ;-) (heheee) Mercy11 (talk) 23:00, 20 July 2010 (UTC) As you might have noticed, I have been involved in a series (yes, series) of new article creation in the recent past (Ponce mayors, Ponce NRHP, barrios of Ponce, prominent Ponceños,,,etc). If it sounds there is a Ponce trend here it is becuase there is! As I looked around this place I realized that, not only Ponce hurricanes (San Felipe II, uffff), but many other things were missing here, so I took it upon myself to help with that. Meaning, I have been involved in what you -- Tony -- have been involved yourself for some time >>> bios. As I don't have the breath of PR bio knowledge you have, I have been content to concentrate in Ponceño bios. So, no, I had no heard about Margenat, but I am not surprised you had! Cheers, °°°° Mercy11 (talk) 21:18, 21 July 2010 (UTC) °°°°

Can't say that I had, but at least he has a solid biography in the internet, that should help his fame. Have you been following the Central American and Caribbean Games? The judo team has been one hell of a surprise. - Caribbean~H.Q. 17:22, 21 July 2010 (UTC)
Same Here, intruiging life. Interested in his cause of death, since he died so young. Quazgaa (talk) 18:24, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

Puerto Rico Project on Spanish Wikipedia

Since you have an interest in Puerto Rico, would you be interested in joining the Spanish Wikipedia's Puerto Rico project? It is at es:Wikiproyecto:Puerto Rico - It is a daughter project of ES's USA project. WhisperToMe (talk) 01:16, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

For the PR articles on subjects that exist on the English subject but not the Spanish, you can post requests at es:Wikiproyecto:Puerto_Rico#Art.C3.ADculos_solicitados and/or fulfill posted requests. I listed several government agencies that needed articles, and I also listed Executive Airlines (the hometown Puerto Rican airline and American Airlines subsidary), Banco Popular (Popular Inc.), Univisión Puerto Rico, and others. Arnaldo Darío Rosado

Hi. The infobox to this article (Arnaldo Darío Rosado) says he died in Villalba. Hummm, I doubt it. Was he not murdered at Cerro Maravilla itself? Was he taken wounded to a hospital in Villalba and then died in Villalba? I suspect the place of death is incorrectly recorded in the infobox. To the best of my knowledge Cerro Maravilla is shared between Ponce and Jayuya ([11]), but definitely not by Villalba. In fact some sources (http://www.elyunque.com/forests.html) identify Cerro Maravilla as entirely within Ponce. Not to be corny, but did he die on the Jayuya or the Ponce side of the mountain??? What do you think (as far as changing the name of the municipality where he died in the infobox)? Cheers, Mercy11 (talk) 01:33, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

    • I agree that, although the road from Villalba is the one that gives access to Cerro Maravilla, its summit is not located in Villalba, but in an area shared by Jayuya and Ponce. Part of the initial access road and the area where the so-called Rikavisión building is located is in Ponce, the main antenna and part of the access road is in Villalba. I haven't been able to ascertain from Google Earth where the small monument is located or whether the monument was placed accurately where the deaths occurred. One would have to delve into the Senate Cerro Maravilla investigations documents to ascertain in which municipality the deaths actually occurred. Based on what I've seen in Google Earth, it may have been in Jayuya or Ponce. Pr4ever (talk) 12:34, 25 July 2010 (UTC)
      • It was fixed in this edit HEREof July 22. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 14:44, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Pedro Albizu Campos

The infobox for Pedro Albizu Campos is kind of strange. It doesn't seem to have a place for his titles, religion, political party, education, birth place and date, etc, etc. Can it be modified w/o destroying the 3 hidden boxes in there now? Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 04:43, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

That works great! Thanks Mercy11 (talk) 01:11, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Lolita Lebrón

Tony, I noticed that her infobox is in the same situation as Albizu Campos'. Maybe it, too, should be fixed to look like Albizu's??? I wonder now if every bio in that series is like that and if they should all be reviewed for updating. Just a comment. Regards, Mercy11 (talk) 23:06, 1 August 2010 (UTC)

Poor Fort Buchanan

Sup Tony,

Came by the article on Fort Buchanan and was suprised as to how much history is lacking here. I started but decided that this editor should make way for someone more qualified for the task of fixing this up. I hope you are interested, If not, let me know and I can give a crack at it. I am just not ready to write articles as yet (this one probably needs a new rewrite). I did add a reference of its history though. Once I am a Jedi like you I will most probably take a more active role at "Bulk" editing. Thanks Tony! QuazGaa 20:02, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Ángel Daniel Vassallo

Hey Tony, I have been slowed a bit by my PC (it is a malfunctioning piece of junk), but this is the first of a series of articles in my list. Just letting you know that it is ready, in case that you can work some of the old magic. Regards, - Caribbean~H.Q. 20:41, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Whoa, there's a lot of stuff out there that is/was unknown to me, nevermind the general public. I came by Antonio Valero de Bernabe just last week, now you can add "Águila Blanca" to that list. - Caribbean~H.Q. 21:04, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
