Hwa Chong Institution edit

Hi,

HCI is not the only Singapore school currently suffering from an onslaught from WP editors of the sort whose main aim in life seems to be to remove as much information from Wikipedia as possible.

Have you thought of taking this matter to the SGpedians Notice Board at Wikipedia_talk:SGpedians'_notice_board to see if it is possible to coordinate an SG response? -- Alarics (talk) 22:17, 2 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'm considering that. Maybe you can help me because I don't know exactly which other schools face the same problem as well. I find it ridiculous to ask for a reference for the school uniform. I assume that Bali ultimate wishes to see a written description of the school uniform to be used as the reference for that section. Where am I supposed to find that? I'll simply upload a picture of the uniform and it speaks everything. Maybe Bali ultimate is right in a sense that the school handbook is not accessible to the general public, so the discipline part has to go. I'm also unhappy that Bali ultimate removed the school councils section entirely. If it's too much trivia, a reduction should be fine. In HCI and some other top schools in Singapore, the school council serves as the bridge between the school administration and the student body. It's very hard to even get into the school council, having to participate in elections and sit for interviews and so on. Actually, I intend to rally some fellow HCI Wikipedians to "defend" the article but I think I'll be accused of breaching some Wikipedian guideline if I do that. _LDS (talk) 03:47, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
If you get your fellow HCI Wikipedians to go on to Wikipedia_talk:SGpedians'_notice_board and all discuss it openly there first, I don't think it breaks any rules, as long as it is on-Wiki and transparent. I think it is only "secret off-wiki conspiring" that is not allowed. See if there is a consensus that there is a problem here and discuss what to do about it.
Other school articles recently heavily edited down are Dunman High School, Pasir Ris Secondary School, Presbyterian High School, Catholic High School, Singapore, Maris Stella High School, and probably others too. I am NOT saying that all those drastic edits should be reverted. Some parts of them I would agree with. Indeed, I myself have edited bloat and clutter and trivia out of some school articles in the past. But I believe many people would say that some of these recent heavy edits go too far, and in effect represent too hasty a de facto change of policy without any proper discussion. If you look at thousands of school articles all over the world, it is clear that there has not previously been an insistence on citing a precise source for every last detail.
An example of what seems to me a much more sensitive approach to cutting out bloat is this one [1] at Victoria School. -- Alarics (talk) 08:06, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Can you initiate the topic there first? I'm not very sure about how to start the discussion. _LDS (talk) 08:13, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Just start a new section at Wikipedia_talk:SGpedians'_notice_board and call it something like Deletion of information from school articles. Cite some examples and ask if anyone agrees with you that too much information is being deleted. -- Alarics (talk) 08:22, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unreferenced BLPs edit

Hello Lonelydarksky! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 939 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Hello, about the Emperor Gaozu article edit

Wow! The article has certainly been improved since the last time I've seen it (which was many months ago). What it really needs now is a substantial amount of inline citations from book or online sources to confirm the newly-added material is correct. I'm afraid that I can't be of much help in this department. I am pretty much retired from Wikipedia. I don't pursue any major projects anymore, only minor edits here and there when I feel that there is a serious error or when a topic sorely needs updating. Best of luck to you in improving the article!

Cheers. --Pericles of AthensTalk 05:27, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

P.S. My friend User:Nlu might be of some help here. You should try contacting him. He has done some very impressive work on many of the Chinese emperors' articles here at Wiki. However, he does not bring a whole lot of sources to the table, but relies on the official histories (i.e. Shiji, Book of Han, Book of Later Han, etc.)
Thanks for your quick reply. I contacted User:Nlu earlier but he seems quite busy too. Thanks for your suggestions. _LDS (talk) 05:34, 20 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Qin's wars of unification edit

Hi Lonelydarksky. Nice to see you again.

The article looks very fleshed out now, but there are three big suggestions I have for this article.

  • 1) The article will need more citations. From the look of it, I would say about half the statements in the article lack an inline citation. In that case, the reader will not be able to determine which source the material came from. And speaking of which...

  • 2) The article definitely needs more sources. At present you only have two: Li and Zheng's 5000 Years of Chinese History, as well as www.hudong.com, which is ok for basic stuff, but I would not rely so heavily on this online site.

  • 3) If you can, and if you have time, definitely visit a library, preferably a university library if one is located near where you live. Instead of spending your hard-earned money for a bunch of books, you can read them all for free! At the library. Lol. Of course, this will eat up a lot of time and if you have no affiliation with the library, you can't check the books out (i.e. you'll have to do all your research while sitting at the library). But this is the best option by far if you don't have online access to some sort of scholarly database of articles or book scans like JSTOR.

I hope this helps,
Eric

SPI edit

Thanks for making the SPI report. I can't keep up with Yongle the Great (talk · contribs)'s sockpuppets at times. He frequently uses IPs but he also creates new accounts, as apparently he has now, and I don't want to block an innocent editor. And then I end up with a lot of reverts to make, as we don't want to reward blocked editors by leaving their edits, whatever we think of them. Dougweller (talk) 08:52, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've added some of the pages he edited onto my watchlist, so each time I see a new editor popping up, I'll check his contributions log. It's rather easy to deduce whether the editor is a sockpuppet of Yongle the Great (talk · contribs), as he edits pages on the same topic (Chinese history, especially pertaining to the Ming Dynasty) and the same articles almost all the time. Besides, I've noticed that he has a habit of blanking his user page or talk page each time he receives a notice on sockpuppetry. And he's foolish enough to use similar usernames, as a lot of them are named after Chinese emperors or dynasties. I'm also in a dilemma whether to propose for deletion the articles he has created. He seems to be contributing constructively, but he's doing it "illegally". _LDS (talk) 09:06, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
It's great to have some help on this. I've protected some of the pages he frequents, or rather semi-protected them. The ones before his block should probably be left alone unless there is any reason to delete them (although some might better be redirects, I don't know.). Have his socks created any? Dougweller (talk) 09:16, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I suspect that User:Kungkang may be another of his socks too. I've considered reverting the following pages back to the versions before they were edited by Yongle the Great and his socks, but there'll be a lot of collateral damage in the process.
Here's a list of some articles and templates created / edited heavily by Yongle and his socks:

_LDS (talk) 09:36, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. Kungkang is unrelated, I was wondering also so I asked someone to check. As you say, and many more. Lots of princes. Another sock was Trương Hoàng Phong (talk · contribs), he seems to have been using sock puppets even before he was blocked. One problem has always been the lack of references. I've worked on a few to find references, wg Kingdom of Dazhou, but a lot still have none. He seems to work a lot on infoboxes, eg if you look at this[2] article before he started, all that's changed is the addition of an infobox, and getting rid of it would in my opinion (I don't like infoboxes, they make things look too clearcut, at least in historical articles) be no great loss. Dougweller (talk) 10:12, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Do you intend to proceed with the "extreme" reverting plan? It's draconian and there'll definitely be collateral damage. However, this plan can be justified as a means of enforcing the block on Yongle and as a warning to potential sockpuppeteers. Actually those articles I've listed above are the ones that are almost totally edited by Yongle and his socks alone, with a few other editors making some minor edits occasionally, including bots. So it's possible to implement the plan for those articles (i.e. revert the pages back to the versions before Yongle and his socks started editing), and then manually restore the edits by other editors. It'll take some time and it's quite tedious, but it can be done. I'm willing to help on that, so what do you think? I'm going out for a while, will be back in about 3 hours time. See you later. :) _LDS (talk) 10:26, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
The SPI has verified the sockpuppetry and although there was originally some concern about a range block, that's been done now, see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Yongle the Great where the report has been moved. Thanks very much for initiating the SPI. Dougweller (talk) 12:56, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad to see that the block is being enforced. Oh, and I see you've started reverting the edits by Yongle's socks. I guess that's the best we can do, since it's not possible to completely erase Yongle and his socks from Wikipedia, and we don't need to resort to that since Yongle's contributions are not totally unconstructive. _LDS (talk) 13:46, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
I agree, I don't want to be too drastic. I should be doing other real life things right now though. Dougweller (talk) 14:36, 26 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your revert of blanking of Talk:Ferrante de Gemmis edit

Hi, I note you reverted the blanking of the above talk page. On checking the article page I see that it is identical and therefore the Talk page content is not needed. I think the IP was doing the right thing. However, I'm not going to revert you rather I'll leave it to you resolve. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 08:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

The IP editor blanked the talk page before the actual article came into existence. There's a time difference of about 1 minute between my reversion and the creation of the article. I've blanked the talk page since it's a repetition. Thanks for pointing that out. _LDS (talk) 08:44, 30 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Chinese Name Titles edit

Hi, I notice you have been changing article title names for some of the Chinese bio such as Hung Yan Yan -> Hung Yan-Yan. But per the guidelines from WP:NC-ZH#Romanization of names, if we want to hyphen a Chinese name, we would keep the second word in small cap such as Hung Yan-yan and not Hung Yan-Yan, since we want to keep it consistence with articles such as Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen. I took the liberty to fix some of the moves for you, but I'm not sure how many you have moved so far, so would you mind going back and fixing some of the articles you have moved so far? Thanks for your help! Tvtr (talk) 17:45, 1 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

I haven't been keeping track of the articles I've moved, as I've been changing the titles each time I see one that needs a hyphen. List of characters from The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber edit

Hi, can you edit "List of characters from The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber" again? I've added more details but not sure that they're perfect.

I've made some minor changes. Your contributions are generally fine, but I've noticed that you've a tendency to go into excessive details about the characters and add in repetitive and trivia stuff. You need to take great care during editing to avoid adding in information that constitutes original research. Just remember, do not add in information that cannot be directly quoted from the novel (i.e. personal thoughts, opinions, analysis, reviews, inferences etc). If the information is essential in helping readers understand the character, then you may add it in, but if it constitutes OR, then you must tag it for OR or CN. Also, please do not remove the tags that I've added. They're meant to help editors identify the parts need citations and references. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:46, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Lu Bu's death edit

I'm sorry for starting an edit war on Lu Bu's death. I thought he was just decapitated. Not hanged. Thanks for explaining. But may I add, after he was hanged, he was decapitated? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.69.189.75 (talk) 20:20, 7 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

The LEDE (i.e. introduction) should reflect facts and not fiction. Lü Bu's cause of death was hanging, then decapitation for his corpse, in Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi). However, since Sanguo Yanyi is a work of fiction, then this cause of death should go into the fictional section on Lü Bu's page and not in the lead section. Anyway, it's already in there (see the last part of this section) for a long time so you wouldn't need to add it in again. On the other hand, Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi) is not a work of fiction and it stated that Lü Bu was killed by hanging without mentioning the decapitation part. Therefore, in the lead section, we just need to say he was killed by hanging. If you can read classical Chinese, you can confirm this by reading Cao Cao's or Lü Bu's biography in Sanguozhi. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but you must quote the sentence or phrase from Sanguozhi. Thanks. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 05:16, 8 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Soundtracks edit

Do you know if The Legend of the Condor Heroes (2003 TV series), The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2009 TV series), and The Legend of the Condor Heroes (2008 TV series) will have soundtrack releases? I love their songs.

No idea about soundtracks, but I do have the opening and ending theme songs of LOCH 2003 and 2008, and for quite a number of Wuxia TV series as well. Have you considered helping me translate the information about Zhou Zhiruo? I'll start working this weekend. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:37, 9 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
      • So you don't have any songs by Ariel Lin from the TV series?
As I've mentioned earlier, I haven't watched 2008 LOCH. I don't even know if Ariel Lin did perform any of the songs from the series. I haven't watched 2009 HSDS as well, by the way. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:26, 11 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Hmmm, well, if you thinking of buying the DVDs for your collections, I suggests that you should buy them being manufactured by Tai Seng instead of Zong Yi Entertainment. Zong Yi Entertainment's made bad qualities DVDs and Tai Seng not only made theirs with better qualities, but also differnt audio and caption languages options. Even though I have the Zong YI's version of the 2009 HSDS , but I think I will purchase the Tai Seng version once it is available next month. I am glad that I only bought 2008 LOCH in Tai Seng version. As for Ariel Lin, one of her songs was on the background such as when Huang Rong at her mother's grave.
  • You said that you have the opening and ending theme songs of LOCH 2008 Here's two more songs you might want to find: 英雄道 by 苏永康 (played during Guo Jing's attack on Samarkand) and 我只能爱你 by 彭青 (played when Huang Rong was inside her mother's grave). Adding these two you'll be completing the soundtrack of the show. I checked the end credits. My mistake is that I thought it was Ariel Lin who sang 我只能爱你.

Going to list out every Emei member's name from HSDS, are you? edit

"Going to list out every Emei member's name from HSDS, are you?"

  • Mmmm, well.... added the minor characters' names, despite that they have no important roles. Their names only mentioned subsequently when Song Quingshu tries to please Abbess and and Emei, including memorized their names, and the Yellow Dressed Maiden after Jingjia tries to assasinnate Xie Xun.

The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2009 TV Series) edit

Have you seen 'The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2009 TV series), yet? Even though I got a copy made by Zong Yi Home Entertainment version, but it is a bad quality which is why I am planning to purchang the Tai Seng version. In my opinion, it surpassesThe Legend of the Condor Heroes (2003 TV series), and as great as The Return of the Condor Heroes (2006 TV series).

Adding chinese movie titles to english wikipedia site edit

Hi,

I'm trying to add chinese movie titles alongside english movie titles for "Eddy Ko's page". I'm new to wikipedia and I'm not sure how to go ahead in doing it properly and not having it getdeleted. Can you please let me know the appropriate way to do this? Thanks for your help.

- Moondust

You can check out WP:ACTOR#Project style guidelines and WP:MOSBIO for more information and the correct guidelines in editing such articles. I've not used the filmography table for Eddy Ko's page yet because his filmography is still quite short. However, since you seem to be planning to expand it, the filmography table can thus come into place. The Chinese film titles are not really necessary, so they can be omitted. If you've any further problems, you can direct your queries to WP:New contributors' help page. I hope this helps. Oh yes, and please sign your posts in the correct manner, as stated at WP:SIGN#How to sign your posts. Thanks, and welcome to Wikipedia! :) 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:54, 30 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi edit

I'm trying to add Chinese/Japanese texts to filmographies. As you probably know many times the translations are nowhere near the original titles, transliterations also vary with dialects (e.g. Mandarin vs. Cantonese). I see your point, but the fact is also many filmographies currently have Chinese text. We are both trying to improve the English side of Chinese actor biographies, let's work together rather than against one another. Cheers and thanks Timmyshin (talk) 04:54, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, indeed some of the translations do differ from the original titles. I'm not against adding Chinese text to filmographies. However, the community needs to come to a compromise on whether to allow Chinese text in filmographies in articles on Chinese actors. I'll start a discussion on whether to include titles in foreign text in filmographies on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers and we'll stick to the final decision by the community. Hopefully, that'll eliminate future conflicts. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 05:05, 8 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Any update? Timmyshin (talk) 07:25, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
The discussion stopped three weeks ago, as you can see at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Actors and Filmmakers#Foreign text for titles and roles in filmographies. Majority of the participants in the discussion seem to support the inclusion of foreign text in filmographies. However, we don't seem to have arrived at a clear consensus yet. I see you've not participated in the discussion, so why don't you share your views with us there as well? Once ready, I think we can draft a set of rules / guidelines based on that at WP:ACTOR for editors to follow in future. In the meantime, please continue with what you're doing. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 07:42, 3 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yijin_Jing unclarity edit

Hi Lonelydarksky.

I've taken a crack at cleaning up the historical section of Yijin_Jing to be a bit more informative -- the following sections I sadly don't feel too qualified to rework too much since I don't know much about the text itself, but I can probably at least clean up the language and make it all a bit smoother. Does this look like a step in the right direction?

Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Subverdor (talkcontribs) 20:28, 9 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well, I don't really know much about the Yijin Jing except for its role in Wuxia fiction. Basically, what I did to the article last month was to convert some Wades-Giles spelling into Hanyu Pinyin, standardize the use of Chinese terms and some minor cleanup. I took a glance at your recent edits to the page. It seems like you've added lots of new information to the page. They look fine to me. :) 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 14:40, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Zhou Zhiruo edit

Hi Sky,

I noticed that you removed the prod tag from Zhou Zhiruo. Do you believe that there are more secondary sources that discuss Zhou Zhiruo in detail? If you do, I would greatly appreciate it if you would add them to the article. If you don't believe that there are other secondary sources, I will likely start an AfD for the article in the near future.

Neelix (talk) 14:32, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I believe there are more secondary sources that discuss the character in detail, but they might not be in English. I need time and help from my fellow editors to find those sources. This is not the first time I'm facing this problem. It's not easy to find a lot of secondary sources for such articles, especially sources in English. I don't quite understand why the work of fiction cannot be used as a source. I'm simply extracting information and quotations directly from it without adding anything that fits Wikipedia's definition of original research. Besides, I don't think information on such articles is merely WP:PLOTONLY. Thanks for pointing out the lack of sources. I'll work on that. :) 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 14:57, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sky,
Thank you for agreeing to look for sources for this article. The novel can certainly be used as a source; it simply isn't a source that demonstrates that the character is notable. Again, Chinese language sources are completely valid. There is no need for the secondary sources to be in English; there simply needs to be secondary sources.
Neelix (talk) 15:04, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Alright. Thanks for your understanding. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 15:45, 1 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sky,
It's been five days and no secondary sources have been added to Zhou Zhiruo. If you still believe some exist and are willing to add them, please do so. As far as I can tell, there is not enough secondary sourcing available to demonstrate the notability of the character, so I will likely be nominating the article for an AfD soon.
Neelix (talk) 19:25, 6 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Do you mind holding back the nomination for a week? I'm busy with studies at the moment and won't be spending as much time on Wikipedia as I used to. I've found some secondary sources, but as I've mentioned earlier, they're in Chinese. I've also requested assistance from my fellow editors with translating the information from those sources. Please give us some time to work on that. Thanks. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 14:11, 7 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sky,
That's a reasonable request; I know how other commitments can keep one from editing for certain periods of time. I'll check back with you in a week.
Neelix (talk) 14:16, 7 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
I've added some new sources to the references section, but I've yet to translate the information. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 08:39, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sky,
Thanks for adding those sources to the reference section. You have written after the sources that one is a "reader's review" and another is a "reader's point of view". Are these professional reviews? Sources need to be verifiable in order to be used on Wikipedia, and they cannot be blog posts or their equivalents, such as information posted anonymously or without editing.
Neelix (talk) 13:08, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, my mistake. Yes indeed, the POV isn't reliable since it's POV. I added that it as I thought it might be of interest to readers, but it's gone now. The "reader's review" is actually a review essay about the character, published on a website that appears to be a collection of model essays on various topics. The last two links are actually extracts from a book about characters in Jin Yong's works. You can get someone to verify and double-check. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:24, 12 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sky,
Don't worry, I trust you. Thanks for sourcing the article! I do, however, have similar concerns about the rest of the articles about characters in the Condor Trilogy. Now that you have located sources for Zhou Zhiruo, would it be easy for you to place similar sources on the other character articles? Neither of the articles for even the main characters currently demonstrate that these characters are notable.
Neelix (talk) 13:02, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Yes, of course I'll do the same for the other characters. I wouldn't want the effort put into writing those articles by me and my friends to go to waste. However, I'll need time to work on that and I may edit articles on other topics in the meantime. I can't stay on Wuxia fiction articles all the time. Thanks. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:21, 13 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi Sky,
That makes sense. Do you think you'll be able to demonstrate the notability of the other characters by the end of the summer? I could check back in September.

Hu Sanniang edit

Hello, Why was my edit for Hu Sanniang deleted? I added the reason why her nickname is "yizhangqing". To non-readers it wouldn't make sense what "ten feet of blue" has to do with a female warrior. The reason is because "yizhangqing" does NOT mean "ten feet of blue", rather it was the common name for a sharp hairpin that ancient Chinese women wear. It has a beautiful appearance but can also be used as a weapon, which perfectly describes Hu Sanniang; beautiful and deadly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 飘零之琴 (talkcontribs) 19:39, 4 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Because the information you've added appears to be original research (OR), as the information about the hairpin seems to be an interpretation of "一丈青". OR is not acceptable (or rather, not encouraged) on Wikipedia. You'll need to provide a reliable source to support the information about the hairpin if you want to add that in. Note that Chinese language sources are also acceptable, so you don't necessarily need to use English language sources. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 04:47, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
By the way, "一丈青" has other meanings. The hairpin information appears to be from chapter 52 of Dream of the Red Chamber. "一丈青" also refers to a type of venomous snake, and Hu Sanniang gets her nickname because her character resembles that snake. You can take a look at Baidu Baike for more information. Curiously, on Chinese Wikipedia, "一丈青" is the name of a type of plant. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 05:03, 5 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Reviewer permission edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:37, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the information is dubious. Kwan Tak-hing's surname "Kwan" is written as 關 in Traditional Chinese and is also pronounced as "Guan" in Mandarin. It's not a mistake. Besides, the article does not have any references at all in the first place. Overcategorisation edit

Hi, I've submitted Category:Historical characters in Wuxia fiction for deletion. This type of connection is unsuitable for our category system. For one, it is irrelevant to the understanding of historical characters who might have written a fictional work about them. And further, most of those characters have been used in hundreds if not thousands of books, which would eventually result in impractically large category lists. For exactly those reasons, the functionally equivalent Category:Historical characters in Jin Yong's works has also recently been deleted. If you have any questions about the rules guiding our category system, you might want to consult Wikipedia:Categorization. --Latebird (talk) 07:37, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

垓下歌 edit

Okay, your version is quoted from some sources.

Below is a translation to modern Chinese.

I am no expert of classical Chinese, but I think this translation isn't too bad. maybe 无人可比 isn't a translation that is literal enough

And I am no expert in translating too, So, may be my translation wasn't accurate.

Now , please explain it to me how is it that to translate 奈若何 to "What will your fate be?" is accurate, or to translate 氣 to "might" is accurate?

In my opinion, using Dapple for 乌骓 isn't accurate either.

from http://baike.baidu.com/view/949408.htm

dapple adjective, gray marked with spots of another color noun, a dappled animal from Webster dictionary (online)

通体黑缎 is not "gray marked with spots of another color"

You want to keep that translation, be my guest. But I think I will post my opinion there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cwchng (talkcontribs) 03:37, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

While I am here, you may want to read this

I have no comments on this. I am no historian or language expert or anything.

Thanks for sharing your opinion on the song with me. However, I feel that a translation taken from a published university research paper is more likely to be accepted as a reliable source than one done by a Wikipedia editor. No offence to you, and I'm not saying that your translation isn't acceptable. If you can find a better translation for the song that is published in a reliable source, you can replace the current one with it. The 作者争议 section is interesting. You can include that on Xiang Yu's page in the Gaixia Song section, but you may need to cite another source instead of Baidu Baike, because some editors have expressed doubts about the reliability of Baidu as a source. Thanks. :) 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:42, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've edited the pages List of The Legend of the Condor Heroes characters, Mu Nianci, Guo Jing, and Yang Kang. Don't know if they are okay or not.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 06:41, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've reworded the Mu Nianci part. I've also removed the "...in southern China." from Guo and Yang's pages because I feel that we don't need to be too detailed. I've reverted your edits to the character list because they're repetition of what you've added to Mu Nianci's page. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 12:54, 30 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Begger's Chicken (叫化鸡) edit

Remember one of the meals Huang Rong made for Hong Qigong, the "Begger's Checken." I made it tonight and it was delicious.

If you want the recipe, here it is.

  1. 1 fresh chicken, 3 to 3 1/2 pounds, cleaned
  2. Marinade:
  3. 2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
  4. 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  5. 1 teaspoon ginger juice
  6. green onion as desired
  7. 2 teaspoons salt
  8. Stuffing:
  9. 6 shiitake mushrooms, fresh or dried
  10. 4 ounces lean pork or pressed bean curd
  11. 2 ounces Chinese pickled cabbage, preserved mustard greens, bamboo shoots, celery, onions, or other vegetables
  12. 2 green onions
  13. 1 tablespoon light soy sauce
  14. 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine or dry sherry
  15. 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  16. 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  17. 1/4 teaspoon five-spice powder (optional)
  18. Other:
  19. 2 tablespoons oil for stir-frying
  20. 2 large sheets each of lotus leaf and aluminum foil for wrapping chicken.

To make the ginger juice, grate the ginger and squeeze out the juice until you have 1 teaspoon. In a small bowl, combine the marinade ingredients. Rub the marinade ingredients over the inside and outside of the chicken and let marinate for 1 hour. Soak dried lotus lead in hot water until soft. Wipe dry and spread sesame oil over leaf.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

While the chicken is marinating, prepare the vegetables and pork. If using dried shiitake mushrooms, reconstitute by soaking in warm water until softened. Squeeze dry and cut into thin slices. For fresh, wipe with a damp cloth and slice. Cut the pork into thin matchstick pieces. Finely chop the remaining vegetables.

In a wok or heavy frying pan, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high to high heat. Add the green onion and the pork. Stir-fry until the pork is crisp and nearly cooked through, then add the mushrooms and preserved greens. Stir in the soy sauce, rice wine or dry sherry, sugar, sesame oil and five-spice powder if using. Remove from the pan.

Stuff the chicken loosely with the stuffing and close with skewers or strong toothpicks. Wrap the chicken tightly with lotus leaf then aluminum foil. Place the wrapped chicken in a roasting pan.

Bake the chicken for 80 minutes. Bake for another 15 minutes or until the juices run clear and the temperature of the chicken in the thickest part of the thigh is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the stuffing and serve with the chopped up chicken.

Also, this recipe was created during the Qing Dynasty, not Song Dynasty. Legend has it that a homeless, starving beggar had a chicken but didn’t have a stove to prepare it. Desperate for food, he came up with an idea. He killed the chicken and covered it with mud and baked it with fire…

A Qing-dynasty Emperor (乾隆皇帝) passed by. Attracted by the aroma of the baked chicken, he stopped and dined with the beggar. The Emperor loved the “Beggar’s Chicken” so much that it was added to the list of dishes served at the Imperial court. Hence, Beggar’s Chicken is also called “富贵鸡” (literally “rich and noble chicken”) in Beijing.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 16:12, 4 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

List of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber characters edit

I made some minor edits on List of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber characters on Yuan Dynasty section.--NeoBatfreak (talk) 07:14, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Repetition. The information that you've added to Zhao Min and Köke Temür is already on their respective individual articles. Besides, if you check the revision history, you'll see that you're adding back redundant information that I've just removed several days ago. You can consider creating a new article for Chaghan Temür. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 12:59, 5 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Zhou Zhiruo edit

Should I add "Technique of Ambidexterity," the skill created by Zhou Botong in Zhou Zhiruo's martial arts sction? Because, while it is not explicitly said, but she uses both the "Nine Yin White Bone Claw" and "White Boa Whip Skill" against and defeated Yu Lianzhou and Yin Liting Lion-Slaying Ceremony, thus uses a different set of martial arts technique for each hand against her opponents which match the description of what Zhou Botong had created. According to the Yellow Dressed Maiden, Wudang's Tai-Chi Fist and Tai Chi Swordplay could have counter the "Nine Yin White Bone Claw" and "White Boa Whip Skill" respectively and they would have able to defeat her. However, Zhou uses the "Nine Yin White Bone Claw" to counter the "Tai-Chi Swordplay" on one hand, and "White Boa Whip" skill to the "Tai-Chi Fist" on the other. The instruction of the skill could have been hidden within other manuals.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me. However, once again, information that is not clearly stated in the original source (in this case, the novel) should not be added to the article. It constitutes original research because it appears to be based on your personal analysis, and is something that cannot be quoted directly from the source. I think it'd be more suitable for a fan discussion forum than an encyclopedia. :) 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:16, 10 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Legend of the Condor Heroes (2008 TV series) edit

The "Reception" section becomes more untidy as more information is added to it. Honestly, I don't think there's a need to list every single way the TV series deviates from the original story. Just list some significant ones will do. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 09:19, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome to make some changes. Also, will Jing Yong would write another novel detailing Guo Jing and Huang Rong's fall? I mean, we never know what exactly happen and why Yang Guo (assumingly) wasn't there to save them . --NeoBatfreak (talk) 01:48, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

In that case, I'll proceed to implement those changes to the "Reception" section that I already have in mind. I doubt Jin Yong would write another novel. You can try discussing this with other people at Wuxiasociety. 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 13:53, 20 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

You should watch the show if you hadn't yet. If you thinking of buying it, in addition of The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber (2009), you must buy them from Tai Seng instead of from Zong Yi Entertainment. Tai Seng offers better qualities. Despite LOTC (2008) is deviating from the original story, it is still an exciting series. Here's a spoiler that you might laugh:

Guo Jing tries to win Yang Kang's favor after Yang ackknowledges his father. Annoyed of being harrased by an imbecile, Yang beat up Guo to get him to leave him alone. When Guo tries to cover up the incident, he said that that he was attack by a "wild pig."

Cecilia Liu edit

Hi, I made a new page Cecilia Liu, because I think she deserve it due to her recent popularity because of her portrayal as a strong-willed version of Mu Nianci. However, it is not that great. Any chance you can help improve it?--NeoBatfreak (talk) 01:33, 23 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Angela Pan edit

Hi. I've re-worked the above page, mostly the filmography table. First, I cut {{filmography table begin}} (which I wrote the original version of), as we've deprecated that template, and the 'end' one. I've also removed the rowspans, as they're problematic for a number of reasons; they are incompatible with sorting and have accessibility issues; see: Help:Sorting#Limitations and listen to: User:RexxS/Accessibility, for an example of how text-to-speech systems have trouble with the missing cells. Such tables make no sense to some users. I see that a couple of the tv pieces have no translated title and this causes them to sort to the end (the sorting controls appear in the header cell, if you're unfamiliar with this system). It would be goodness to have translations ;) This is, I think, the first filmography we've reworked this way that involves non-western characters, so your input will be most welcome. The user I'm mostly working with on this is User:Rossrs and I'll leave him a note about this. See WP:ACTOR#Filmography tables for our suggestions.

I've kept the columns around the two tables, but don't think it a good approach; it will get all scrunched on small displays.

fyi, I've been to Singapore many times; a regular at Kinokuniya.

Thank you for your help. I think that the rowspans for the years can be retained, because it'll be rather troublesome to keep adding the same year over and over again in the table. Apart from that, the changes you've made to the article are fine. Actually, I'm not involved in the regular maintenance and updating of the page. I passed by yesterday and saw that it was very untidy and full of unnecessary information (Vietnamese titles, co-actors, running times etc), so I decided to take some action in cleaning up and removing the redundant stuff. Enjoy your trip if you're planning to visit Singapore again. :) 暗無天日 contact me (聯絡) 12:45, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
There's been a ton of talk about issues with rowspans. 'Optimizations' such as omitting years are about omitting data; the accessibility issues are real; text-to-speech with missing data makes no sense. And try sorting by title; the years are only together when you're sorting by year (or viewing the base-order). Anyway, we're supposed to be using wikitext, not html; it key to the wiki. Personally, I have no trouble with the syntax; I'm a developer. But I see people breaking tables all the time because they don't really understand code, and rowspans are something most people don't get. How many editors can take this sample table and make it a mirror-image of the original?
Any chance you can translate the remaining titles? fyi, I lived in Bali for years; Singapura was about shopping and new visas. I visited at least a dozen times.

Proposed deletion of Chronology of Jin Yong's novels edit

Hey Lonelydarksky, there has been a proposition to delete the timeline page of Jin Yong's novels. According to User:Jfgslo (who has also successfully proposed for the deletion of other timelines), it seems to constitute WP:OR and lacks other sources to back it up. However, I do not feel that there is really a need to delete the article; besides, all of the complete timelines have been transferred to templates, so it will not be much useful to delete it, as the templates can still be transcluded onto their respective novel articles. What do you think then? NoNews! 02:48, 4 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

This isn't the first time we're facing this problem. I've commented on the AFD page.
