Speedy deletion nomination of User talk:Launchballer/archive/2014/401-500 edit

A tag has been placed on User talk:Launchballer/archive/2014/401-500, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

Custom histmerge, could all revisions of User talk:Launchballer before this one be moved here please.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Note: The above message (which I don't totally understand) was sent to my talkpage, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to to do about it. Launchballer asked me to archive his userpage while he was blocked, I was (and am) happy to help, so I did it. I didn't realise that the Blocked message should not have been archived, but as it was copied back onto Launchballer's talkpage by admin, I understood that all was well. Now could someone please tell me - am I supposed to just leave this thing alone to look after itself - or am I being asked to dispute the deletion tag on Launchballer's behalf? It's not my archive, and I have no personal interest in what happens to it, but if I'm being asked to support Launchballer's interests until the block is completed, will someone please let me know what exactly is required, and I'll do it. Thanks. --Storye book (talk) 09:26, 4 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Storye book: With the rest of my archives, the history is in the archive therefore I'd like the history moved to there. I believe I set out my intentions in a comment above, and I need an administrator for this. With Twinkle, which I use extensively, it automatically sends out talk page messages for deletions for custom criteria and I should've unticked the box. My sincere apologies, no offense was intended.--Launchballer 09:34, 4 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • No worries, I don't get offended. I'm glad all is well, and I'm here to help if needed. --Storye book (talk) 09:48, 4 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Vandal edit

You undid my edit of the Now Summer 2008 (Australian series) article to stop a vandal - recent incarnation 121.217.197.176. I know nothing of this article, so I appreciate your insight. Be aware though, that this would be a rare "constructive" contribution, maybe the first, so please make certain it is constructive. Thanks.

Prosecreator (talk) 22:36, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Have another look at this edit and tell me if you think it is vandalism. Quite honestly, I would consider your edit to that article less constructive than the IP's; the IP simply piped a link to an article, whereas you made "(song)" visible, which is undesirable. Who cares if it's the first constructive contribution it made - the fact was, the edit was constructive, and the only time a user's edits should be blanket reverted is if the editor is indefinitely blocked or banned, which is not the case and in any case can be done by an admin using Special:Nuke. To echo my comment in the edit summary; comment on content not contributors.--Launchballer 23:17, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. Wikipedia's mechanisms to stop vandalism from anonymous IP's are simply inadequate. I am not an administrator, but am doing my best to repair the damage this individual or individuals cause. It requires a lot of effort to clean up these messes time and time again, and mistakes can be made. Numerous articles are effected by this individual, and they've been active for months, maybe years. Often they simply delete entire sections or add inappropriate content (e.g. childish bathroom humor). Sometimes it is more "insidious" with seemingly legitimate content that upon closer inspection is intentionally incorrect. Prosecreator (talk) 18:33, 8 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of ZSZ edit

A tag has been placed on ZSZ requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from an implausible typo or misnomer. If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". California (Amelia Lily song) edit

Kennedy had been added as producer in a series of edits by YeahYeahYeah19, who didn't cite a source for this information. It looks likely that the edits you reverted were corrections; I can see no evidence that they were vandalism. Peter James (talk) 19:43, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

What clinched it being a bad faith edit for me is that within minutes of reverting the first edit, Woodcock started following me on Twitter. Adding himself as a writer for the song despite a source being added to the contrary is just plain ignorant, frankly, and to my mind vandalism.--Launchballer 19:51, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Woodcock was already listed as writer, it was Rushton who was added - possibly original research but there's no reason to assume bad faith. Contact via Twitter may have been because identity can be verified there unlike on Wikipedia. Peter James (talk) 20:12, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Ahem. Sorry, I meant producer. I only have Twitter to prevent other people from taking #Launchballer - RHaworth has a Twitter account for the same reason. And frankly, I have more information on my user page than I do anywhere else. (I occasionally crop up in newspapers.)--Launchballer 20:18, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Brutal Assault edit

Seriously? Deleting all this stuff just because you felt like to? And your reasons - 'because it isn't cited elsewhere'. I went on Wikipedia page especially to check this, but ONE person decided it's not right. Unless there are indeed other people who support you. I don't feel like playing 'reversing war', cause it makes no sense. I can see on your user talk that you're a quite controversial person. I am sure there are quite reliable sources of Brutal Assault history - and it's a thing that should stay on the page. But yeah, I guess it's easier to delete all of this and annoy X people instead of doing some actual job. Also, why won't you delete e.g. Masters of Rock history? Wacken Open Air? It doesn't have sources either. Do it or reverse Brutal Assault changes, if you're not a hypocrite.

The phrase is 'edit war' not 'reversing war'. On Wikipedia we require independent, reliable sources to back up our claims. If none exist, then of course they should be deleted as unverifiable. As for consensus, a couple of editors agreed that it was the best way forward at AfD, thus you may get a more sympathetic response at deletion review.--Launchballer 04:54, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I confess, I got as far as the end of #Impact and decided enough was enough. "lacked a fundamental component of rap, the rhyming" is totally unencyclopedic and "introduced new innovations in achieving the grammatical accuracy needed to arrange Korean successfully into rhymes. He was the first to create actual rhyme schemes in Korean and his method is now the standard for Korean rapping within the hip hop scene" is, to my mind, very promotional, though at least the latter part of that sentence is sourced. When I have time I'll have a look through the rest of it.--Launchballer 22:49, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Actually, you can withdraw from an AfD nom if there are still other delete votes, it just isn't speedy kept until/unless the delete votes also change their tune--but there's no need to proceed in a particular order. And indicating (as you did in that example) that you do think your concerns have been handled is generally something that closers like myself notice. Just FYI, have a great day! --j⚛e deckertalk 19:17, 23 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

On deletes and saves edit

Thanks for withdrawing the request for deletion on Jaap Reesema. I didn't want to mention this on the Jaap Reesema page but I can mention it to you in all transparency. Creating articles and also saving of articles from deletion is a special kick of adrenaline and intense satisfaction for an editor like me. It also gives this odd sense of pride of having launched an article, or saved an article from actually disintegrating in front of your eyes... For me, when you find an individual artist that you actually discover out of the blue and develop a liking to him, this guy Jaap Reesema as a case, you listen to his songs and watch his videos and see all the effort he has put it and all the goodness he is trying in his little way to spread around as far as he can, then you realize that there are hundreds of millions of people in the world who could have passed the same experience but none bothered to spend a few minutes and write an article about him or her, out of apathy or whatever, then you feel you are the single individual of those 6 billion population who cared enough and gave some time to a deserving little known artist. It truly becomes your baby for your own satisfaction... as the guy barely famous in his little odd country gets an international platform now with Wikipedia. That's why I hardly bother with big artists everybody is writing about, don't even read their pages, I just stick to the small guys I got to know. So when confronted by a deletion request, you are suddenly let down and realize your efforts, despite all, are on the wake of being wasted and now that guy you came to appreciate will go to oblivion yet again, then, your adrenaline shot works in you to give yet more time and effort to save it once more as you fervently search for more references and discover more things about the guy in process. That's why I joined Wikipedia:Article Rescue Squadron and that's also why I rarely partake in launching deletion requests myself unless the article is so grotesque it isn't worthy at all or its just vandalism or a practical joke... But my rule of thumb is, regardless of how bad an article is, check the videos, even if it is in a language you know nothing about, even if you cannot even pronounce the name of the artist, find the lyrics, put them in a translation machine, check the meanings, join in as much as you can and learn a few words in that language, check the literature, try to know more about the guy, try to discover, and if you like him or her, and you like what he has done, the article does reserve an effort to improve rather than delete. Don't get me wrong, I don't get pissed off by colleagues who ask for deletions, they are trying to do well in their own way, as deletion requests sometimes kickstart a worthwhile process of improving an article, but if I can improve without having to delete, so much the better... In any way, thanks for your efforts. In that spirit, here are a couple of Jaap Reesema songs "Mijn Wereld Op Z'n Kop" "Ooit Komt Nooit Meer" and his number 1 cover "Don't Stop Believin'" plus a song I dedicate to everyone I correspond to - my slogan and the spirit I edit in: "I Wish For You The World" thus my name werldwayd werldwayd (talk) 21:33, 28 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I know the feeling well, I got it just the other day with Mankind (band). A major flaw with Wikipedia is that it takes two clicks and a bit of typing to set up a deletion request (using Twinkle), whereas to visit the user's talk page takes three clicks and a lot of typing. I am a firm believer that, used properly, the deletion process can be used to help clean up articles - my thoughts on the matter were once recorded here. Usually, if I say "Fails WP:GNG as no reliable references" or in the case of the grotesque "WP:REDLINK" or "WP:TNT", it's a cleanup exercise (Jaap Reesema clearly passes WP:MUSICBIO criteria 1 and 9, thus had I not withdrawn, it would unquestionably have been kept); if I say "Notability concerns", that's the time to panic.--Launchballer 08:06, 29 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School edit

The article Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable primary school

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. 180.172.239.231 (talk) 09:35, 31 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Deletions edit

I am quite concerned about your afd nominations as unsourced, when sources are very easy to find. This is putting the burden on other people, and adding needlessly to the number of articles that need to be considered in a complex process. At least a superficial check for references is part of WP:Deletion Policy. WP:BEFORE is not absolutely required (unfortunately), but nominations such as some of yours will make a good case for requiring it the next time I make that proposal. The acceptable error rate depends if you;re working in a debatable area--I tend to nominate borderline cases to get a decision, so my rate of success is only about 90%, but for straightforward articles it should be higher.

I'm also puzzled by some of your speedy nominations: while G11 can be a matter of judgement, A7 is defeated by any good faith indication of importance. Writing a book, other than a self published book, for example--anything that someone in good faith could think suitable for an encyclopedia. The practical error rate goal at CSD is usually given as 5%, and anything over 10% is an indication of misunderstanding the process.

Perhaps if you're really trying for deletions you could consider being somewhat more selective. There is quite enough junk that we really do need to get rid of, especially from the earlier years (My personal guess is about a quarter million articles) . But perhaps you're using it to force improvements (your user page seems to indicate this); this is indeed sometimes necessary--I've done it myself when it seemed there was no other practical way. But usually it's overkill in terms of procedure. Listing with a wikiproject can deal with most of them. It takes time and people to discuss afds carefully, and listing there unnecessarily hinders the proper discussion of those that do need to be discussed. DGG ( talk ) 00:28, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

DGG: I tend to worship WP:DINC#The Case for Discussion driving Cleanup and its linked hatnote which I created, especially given that AfDs can always be withdrawn. I'll admit that some of them were daft, but to my mind if the encyclopedia is improved, it was worth it. Hence why I'm a lot less selective than many editors. Hi Launchballer, I have today created two articles for the Secombe Theatre, Sutton and the Charles Cryer Theatre, Carshalton. I hope that you as an experienced Wikipedian (more so than I), can help; the problem is that when I search for these new entries, they are not anticipated by the internal search engine, which instead finds references to the theatres in the article on Carshalton where they are mentioned. When you get a minute, would you please look into this issue, and see if you can rectify it. Many thanks. A P Monblat (talk) 23:02, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

deletion nominations edit

Please see my comments at the afd for Sa-Deuce. We have enough real work to do at afd without dealing with your totally incorrect nominations--you are disrupting the process. If there is any more like this, I am going to start a discussion whether you be topic-banned from nominating afds. I would block you myself unless you agreed to stop, except we have had enough previous interactions that I do not want it to seem like a vendetta. DGG ( talk ) 03:27, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

DGG: Okay, so an AfD nomination was inappropriate. Putting it through a deletion nomination was entirely appropriate because even though the topic passes WP:MUSICBIO#C2, the article is currently failing Wikipedia policy and it would have been even more incorrect of me to have not done something. WP:DDC applies. I dislike proposed deletion intensely because I believe it is a waste of time; anyone can request it be restored, which undermines that process.--Launchballer 07:52, 20 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I suggest you should learn to edit from a WP:NPOV and refrain from removing either a sourced content or the references to reliable sources that justify a claim/content. Then your edit is likely not to be reverted. Wikicology (talk) 09:46, 27 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Wikicology: Please learn how to pipe a link - see Help:Wikilinks. You have already been told off for this by RHaworth.
FranNina: Nothing further to add to Wikicology's comments, though a more succinct version can be found by following the "Your edit here" link and reading Dl2000's edit summary.--Launchballer 12:20, 27 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion contested: Talk:Tulisa Contostavlos edit

Hello Launchballer, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I contested the speedy deletion of Talk:Tulisa Contostavlos, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: If you want to request a revdeletion, you can do so by contacting one of the admins listed here rather than placing a speedy deletion template on the page. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Passengerpigeon (talk) 04:16, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Passengerpigeon: What a patronising template! I am of the view that containing oversightable material should be an offense for CSD; it gets the job done, firstly, and I was rather hoping an administrator would have declined it.--Launchballer 09:13, 14 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Meghan Tonjes edit

Do you have an actual reliable source for the assertion that her cover of "All About That Bass" actually qualifies as a "hit" on any chart that would satisfy WP:NMUSIC? I'd be happy to restore the version which I deleted in 2011 if a proper source could be provided for its hit status — but the song's article doesn't mention her name at all, and Google isn't exactly offering up any properly sourced evidence that the song actually made it onto an IFPI-certified national pop chart either (the only place I'm seeing that claim turn up so far is a non-notable music marketing blog), so what it would take in this case is a reliable source which confirms that the claim of passing NMUSIC is actually true. Seems backwards to me, but I've reverted. I did look at his talk page; I see two comments, one a welcome and the other speedy deletion nomination. Neither, to my analogue mind, explain the phrase... never mind.
On a completely unrelated matter, I have a firm policy that I archive my talk page at 100 sections and yours is in excess of 200. The one I edited was #201.--Launchballer 20:22, 10 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Udhampur railway station edit

What were you trying to do with Udhampur railway station by placing CSD G6?. Night Fury (talk) 06:18, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

I was trying to get the redirect deleted so that the article could be moved to the correct place. Please learn how to read a template.--Launchballer 20:31, 27 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

@RHaworth: I thought that it could be moved directly by the "move option" at the top of the page but that leaves redirect without being deleted. By that method I was unable to move the page because it required permission from admin. because the software showed that there was another article by the same name. What Launchballer has done is more appropriate. I have now done the same think to Qazigund Railway Station. Thanks admin for your help. I am trying to learn things from you. .....

Thanks. Night Fury (talk) 01:17, 29 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews edit

Hello Launchballer/archive/2015. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).Reply
