May I use a derivative of this template for welcoming newcomers? Thanks. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 08:42, 1 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think I will do the same. Also adding a link to it from Wikipedia:Welcome_templates; I think others will like it too. GChriss 02:39, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Comment on welcome edit

The only way I want to change this now...is if we can get the signature to change with tildes for each user and be after the very fist paragraph within the welcome box itself.Kukini 23:55, 27 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I don't really understand what you are wanting or what the problem is, but I think I have it figured out. I worked out how to get the signature without sending in a parameter with a pipe. Since you are no doubt tired of me changing your welcome, I copy and pasted yours and modified it at User:Ashlux/Welcome. Here's what it looks like for me when I use it here (using {{subst:User:Ashlux/Welcome}}:

PAGENAME edit

Copied from User talk:Kukini - 23:28, 5 June 2006 (UTC). Λυδαcιτγ(TheJabberwock)Reply

<snip>

The {{PAGENAME}} variable, which you are using, can produce unwanted results. First, the welcomed user will see the {{PAGENAME}} code if he clicks "edit." And second, if the welcome is archived, the {{PAGENAME}} variable won't make sense, since it will change to reflect the name of the archived page.

For these reasons, you may wish to consider subst:ing the PAGENAME, by writing {{<includeonly>SUBST:</includeonly>PAGENAME}} instead of {{PAGENAME}}. The template will then run the SUBST: when you substitute the template (caution: this only works for subst:ed templates), producing a static PAGENAME variable. See {{subst:User:Iamthejabberwock/Welcome}} or {{subst:User:ABCD/welcome}} for examples.

Hey ya'll edit

I like this welcome as it is right now, although I think I would rather it be hues of red. If someone is in the mood to try that out, go ahead. In the meantime, I am contemplating putting a section about edit summaries on it as well. Most new users do not seem to know about this issue. Kukini 21:57, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think that might be too bold/confrontational, as red is generally interpreted and used (by westerners) as a "stop" or "warning" colour. When Nexus asked me to experiment with colour, I left/built-on the green foundation for its welcoming emotional colour, and connection to Esperanza, (and because it was easier ;) I was also trying to keep to the soft palette used on the Main Page, Help page, Community Portal, and various 'officialish' infoboxes/navtemplates. --Quiddity·(talk) 22:22, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm primarily asking you all (see below) to merge, so that every new user gets the best possible welcome (template). There is no major difference between any of those 4, in fact most are identical? Instead of forking into tiny variants, and confusing things at Welcome template table, I suggest it's better to put improvements into a single version, for the benefit of all. :) --Quiddity·(talk) 22:22, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Then compare with User:Kylu/welcome, which is different enough to warrant a seperate version ;) --Quiddity·(talk) 22:51, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Fair enough. Leave it be as you fixed it. I do want to add another box to it where I would put this in it:
"Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may think you're being sneaky or even vandalizing."
What do you think? Kukini 22:35, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I think you should merge them, and then repeat that question at Template talk:Welcomeg. Personally, I agree. --Quiddity·(talk) 22:56, 22 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Edit summary edit

A welcome message should be short and simple, and the text about the edit summary is not. There's no reason to talk about an edit summary when the person may not even really know how to edit an article yet. Why put 3 sentences about an edit summary without a pointer to "Wikipedia Tutorial" or "How to edit a page" in the introductory message? (and why not WP:5P?) The rest of the message is basic things like "Hello, welcome", how to get help, and how to be identifiable when communicating. It is not that big of a deal if a new user does not use edit summaries for the first few days, and it may actually be good in that a user who doesn't fill out the obvious edit summary box is going to have their contributions a little bit more carefully reviewed by experienced users. —Centrxtalk • 23:27, 23 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have to agree. That table is overwhelming enough with the links that each go to a long page; should keep the intro short and friendly. --Quiddity·(talk) 01:36, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Elsewhere... I've merged the changes into {{welcomeg}}. I invite you to redirect/move all 3 duplicates to there, and continue any discussion at its talkpage. Thanks again :) --Quiddity·(talk) 01:36, 24 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:Cleaning up vandalism edit

I've added a link to the Cleaning up vandalism guide to your welcome message under "Getting Technical" because I've seen new users blanking entire vandalised pages and even going as far phoning up administrators themselves (including myself twice so far!). Hopefully this link will allow them to start helping themselves first. --  Netsnipe  ►  03:49, 4 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Shameless theft edit

Hi. I have just nicked your design lock-stock-and-barrel, see User:Mais oui!/Welcome (Scotland). If you object, please say so and I will get rid of it. If you are OK with the gross act of theftery, could you please tell me how to remove the bolding from the first box: I tried to just remove the bold instruction, but it didn't work. Thanks. --Mais oui! 13:06, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I got rid of the bolding in the first box for you. Changed font-weight:bold to font-weight:normal. --Durin 18:10, 7 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Getting your info out there" edit

Sounds like it is encouraging to advertise or vanity. Wikipedia is not about getting the info about you, your company, or band "out there". It is about writing and editing, etc. —Centrxtalk • 22:48, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Merging some links edit

Hi Kukini, some of the links on your template are out of date or redundant now. You may want to merge some over from Template:welcomeg.
