WITASWAN page

Hey Katie,

I noticed that you deleted my WITASWAN wikipedia page yesterday at 6:25pm. I am writing to you about that page.

I'm a freelance writer and was contracted to write a page about WITASWAN, an Illinois-based initiative. This is my first time writing a wiki article, and I actually wasn't finished but posted by mistake. I'm working to revise and make it longer, which I'll be doing in Microsoft Word first. Sorry about this error. I hope that, when the WITASWAN page is ready later today, you can restore it. There will be a lot more info on it, and I do think it will qualify as a Wikipedia page. How does that sound to you?

Harris Newmark

I want to congratulate you on the great job you did on Harris. You organized and added a lot of info that I hadn't, i.e., all the languages, the school, the building etc. It was the first article I'd ever written for Wikipedia, and I've some questions for you. But, First, I wanted to tell you about Montebello. I think around beginning of 2007, I was taken to it on the Wikipedia site, and there was no or little mention that the city had been called Newmark, then in 1920, Montebello. I added some of the history, and the people connected it, as I recall they seemed to go from Repetto to Mulholland to Montebello. I don't want to sound paranoid but the lack of references and the changing of pioneer names seem to occur more often, at least in Los Angeles, if the pioneer is Jewish. But at least some of the interest about him is changing; there are History of Los Angeles (his book a necessity) courses in the local colleges and many have "Center for Jewish Studies.

Anyway, my questions. If I want to refer to a book, from something that was said in the article how do I do it? I saw you had Harriet Rochlin's book, as # one and then it led to References and then when you clicked on her book it went to a google book search and the showed some info and the where you could buy it. How do you do this? Also for newspaper or magazine articles? They all also seem to have the square with the arrow, References and External links. When I go to your edit I can see how you did the External links as they go to web pages, http: but for your References it has something in something called reflist /2 in brackets for all the books? I've tried to look at the tutorials but they seem confusing. Maybe you know an exact one I can use. I'd appreciate your help. I assume you'll leave a message on "my talk" page?

Hi, I saw your comment on Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2007 September 29/Articles regarding this article. I agree with you and Rodek and deleted the article as a copyright violation. Working on WP:CP is not so difficult, with some exceptions. It gets harder after you delete stuff, you will get messages from people with "WTF did you delete my article/image" "admin abuse" etc etc. :)

The town of Newmark

Hi (Katie?),

Thank you for all your written help. I saw it a few days ago and will read it and reread it, and I'll probably set up some kind of dummy test. As far as what the town of Montebello/Newmark was called in looking at your changes, again, I think you have it right, but I have access to a footnote not in the original book, which is on-line at The Library of Congress. I have the 3rd edition 1970, and the 4th 1984 and there were two others in 1926 and 1930. (I had a Memorial edition limited to fifty copies edition number 25 and donated that among many other Newmark/ Levi papers and ephemera to the Autry National Center this year.) Since the town name officially became Montebello in 1920, the footnote must be in the second edition, 1930, edited by his son Marco R. Newmark who was probably really really angry.

Kaspare Cohn, J. D. Bicknell, I. W. Hellman and S. M. White, in conjunction with myself, bought the Repetto Ranch from the brother, before he left for Italy, for sixty thousand dollars. All in all, the heir, who survived the date of his windfall but a few years, carried away with him the snug sum of one hundred thousand dollars.

This fine domain, lying between Whittier and Los Angeles, was apportioned long before 1899, among the five purchasers. In that year, Kaspare Cohn and I, on the advice of William Mulholland, developed water on our undivided share, meeting with as great a success as has attended all of the operations of that eminent engineer. After an abundance of water was secured, we sold the property in five-acre and smaller lots, locating the town site of Newmark (1) near the tracks of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, and naming the entire settlement Montebello.

That says it all! Not everybody lives or reads in one of the imperial powers. I write for those struggling with English in "lesser" countries. I am sorry I can no longer offer to stop writing articles and stop donating - I did that in response to a (prob male) bully who deleted an article of mine. Now a (prob female) bully comes out of the woodwork. I guess it gives a sense of power to otherwise impotent people. TDC on Michael Ledeen

What does it matter if TDC reported himself, he violated the 3RR and he should be blocked. I've learned the hard way what happens when you violate 3RR and I never got any special exemptions. You violate it you get blocked, period. He's trying to enforce his own POV on the article and bogusly cites certain rules when there convinient. Ok, so him calling me psycho and continuing to attack me and place blame on me isn't vandalism. Can you at least block him for a little while to get him out of my hair. Department of Geography

Just wondering if you can explain to me why you deleted the page Department of Geography University of Canterbury, especially when none of the community asked for its deletion. At very least it should have been merged which is what the community was suggesting (those of us that were not asking for it to be kept). Can you explain why the first Geography Department and one of only two remaining Geography Departments in Australasia is not notable enough to be in wikipedia. There was no advertising for the place in the article so as far as I could see it fitted the rules stated in Wikipedia about articles. I would appreciate some feed back as to whether the page can be fixed and what I would need to add to it in order to not have it deleted again. Hello – thanks for the message. I messed up – it should have been closed as a merge to University of Canterbury. I don't know what I was thinking by closing it as 'delete'. I really have no excuse, and I apologize.

I think, though, I have a better solution for you than undeletion. The two articles won't stand on their own, so undeleting them will only put a time clock on you to merge the content into the university article. So, I've taken the text of each article and userfied both. You can find them at User:Chopperxs/Geography and User:Chopperxs/Engineering. You can edit them or expand them, and you can add their content to the university article when you're ready. It also takes away any time pressure from a decision to merge, since you can have almost anything you want in your userspace as a subpage like these.

Don't add categories or any templates to the pages, because categories and templates belong in the article space.

Again, I apologize – I must have been distracted when I read the discussion, and I have no excuse. I hope this solution is acceptable, and as I said, I think it's a better fix than undeleting the articles. Thanks for letting me know about my screw-up. - KrakatoaKatie 02:48, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Pontiac Montana

Thank you for fulfilling my request Katie, but I feel I have a minor objection: The page has been semi protected before, and the IPs have simply waited out the protection. The last times that the page was protected, it was for a week, so I am concerned to whether or not this will slow them up. These Ips seem to either be GM employees, or GM enthusiasts, so they are ultra determined to gloss up the articles relating to their minivans. And, seeing that both of the current Ips have attacked me on my talk page, I highly doubt that they will discuss this. They are just going to do like always; wait the protection out then start forcing their POV again. I wish for the page to be semi protected indefinitely. Maybe after a couple of months, or in 2008, the page can be unprotected, and this will have finally blown over, as they will have gotten tired of waiting and will have either forgotten or given up. That is just my opinion though. You are the administrator, and I will respect your decision over this, whatever it is. Karrmann 21:16, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

THank you Katie! But now, I am running into more problems there. One of the IPs is now creating accounts to get around the semiprotection, and is adding misinformation. Mainly, he is claiming that production is going to continue, as he is a fan who seems to be in denial of the fact that the Montana is doomed. The fact is that GM is exiting the minivan business since their last batch of vans flopped badly, and are instead going to invest in Crossover vehicles. However, this guy keeps changing the info, saying that they are going to continue production of the Montana. *Sigh* I swear, these guys just aren't going down without a fight. Harris Newmark

In the article on Harris it says, "On Mulholland's suggestion, the entire tract, including the Newmark town site, was given the name Montebello.[8]." But if you go to the reference, http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/r?ammem/calbk:@field(DOCID+@lit(calbk023div45)),  it doesn't mention that Mulholland suggested the name, but I can't seem to change this and keep the [8] reference. for some reason it changes to [4]. Could you change the info?

Janis Joplin, Karyn Kupcinet, etc.

Hi. I am the person who reported the 3RR violation regarding the Joplin article and am honestly trying to make both of these articles better with as little dissension as possible. I'd like to point your attention to issues that have arisen this evening since Dooyar returned to WP. We had a good consensus on the biased tone of some of the things added to Joplin and we felt that what was left was a balance between what Dooyar wanted to add and a less POV tone. Some changes have been made that seem very arbitrary, and he basically threatened me on his talk page. I did tell him that the next step for the Joplin article would be requesting dispute resolution. Once more into the breach

I wanted to ask you to take a look at how another issue has been unfolding. It has me beating my head against the monitor and stressing out to no end (which I'm not really healthy enough for). I don't know if I've handled this in an ideal way, but I certainly have tried to ignore the subterfuge to stick to the point as much as I could. Another editor is trying to take it a whole different direction until I finally gave up and asked for a WP:CP investigation. If you have time, would you please take a look at Talk:Dan Antonioli? There are links in the text that show where I posed the question and the responses that I got. Was I unclear about what I believe is the issue? Am I being malicious or out of line in questioning how this is being used? Am I obligated to offer the solution when all I want to know is whether it's a problem? Question on protected edits

Hi Katie. I'm one of the more recent editors on Steam (content delivery), and i want to get this page cleaned up. I'm a bit unsure of how to get started, though. Should we just make a list of edits to be made and then submit them? Should we make a mirror of the page (say, "Steam (content delivery)/Protected edits") and get a new version going there, and then submit that? Question

Hi. I just saw that the author of the copyvio issue above went to a couple other administrators about the issue and kind of misrepresented the sequence of events and issue. In short, he removed the copyvio tag, obstensibly under the OK of one of the adminstrators (though I can't find where it was said to take it off). While he did pare down the quotes, which was the issue, I have to think this isn't the outlined process for this. I know the copyvio tag has a different process outlined than the one that was taken. He had archived the page to his sandbox several hours before you had even looked at it. I don't know, but it certainly has all the hallmarks of a passive-aggressive run around play to me. Doesn't this have to go through the resolution process once it's brought up? Wildhartlivie 00:47, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

I also offered this comment on the Dan Antonioli talk page in response to the assertion that basically, Google does it all the time and it's all good for them. Since you've worked on copyright issues before, please let me know if I'm misunderstanding the issue:

From the copyright decisions that I've read in detail over the last few days, the issue of displaying the lead paragraph, or a thumbnail of an image, in a search engine has not been found to be the issue. The copyright violation occurs when the search engine or webpage hosts the material. Since Google frames the page which is in actuality loaded by the computer of user employing the search engine, Google has been able to avoid liability on this.

The issue here is, for copy & pasted paragraphs & full biographies into a reference, is that Wikipedia becomes the host for the material, and this example we are considering, material in excess of what is being used in the body of the article. And that, according to the Ninth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals, is a copyright violation. There have been a whole passel of copyright issues here over improper use that I've come across while researching discussions on WP the last few days - in requests for comment, articles & images for deletion and copyright violations. Thank you for helping with a page I added a few months ago, titled, Lloyd Schermer. I am not very good at this, but I am careful (very careful) not to put incorrect info on Wikipedia. There is indeed a Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC. The museum is quite important. It is also quite important for an artist to have his or her work in this museum and listed in their bio.

Umm, why did you undo me in this article? Did you look at the link removed? As I say in my edit comment, it is essentially not germane: if we include as a link in every article every scant mention made of its subject somewhere online, Wikipedia will be an even worse mess than it is already. Hello – thanks for the message. I reverted you because I'm the person who expanded this article from a stub. I have a Questia annual membership at my own expense (if it's any of your business) and I find it valuable because it's easy to search, read, and do work on different projects. I did several hours of research on Questia and elsewhere before I expanded it, and I added every reference in the article using Questia and other research tools.

The source in question, The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources, 1745–1799, edited by John C. Fitzpatrick, is used at Wikipedia in George Washington and Jonathan Plowman Jr., and it should be used _more_ often, not less. The papers take up 39 volumes at the Library of Congress. They were edited by Fitzpatrick as part of the Washington Bicentennial, when the Library of Congress cooperated with Fitzpatrick to organize and publish them under the authority of Congress. It is a United States Government Printing Office document, it is available on microfilm at the Library of Congress, several hardcover volumes are available at Amazon.com, and it is available online here. I used the Questia version because that was the place I was working at the time. I was honest about the format I accessed, and there's nothing wrong with using an online database of works in the public domain.

I've added the reference back in its original form; I don't have the time or the inclination to find it at the UVA site, especially when my original work was sufficient. If you want to find it at the UVA site and change the URL accordingly, be my guest, but unless you can demonstrate that this source is not a reliable one, it should remain in the article. Taking Out Mullholand

I didn't see your letter to me about the numbers, until I edited the article. But you were right, when I saved the edit, no.8, was there and it referred to Harris' book and the correct page. After I saw your page, I went in, again, and put in the reason for change, (Again, an attempt to repair incorrect references.) I wrote what you suggested.

As far as I know, everyone is OK. My cousin who lives in Del Mar Heights said they were told to evacuate, but they were going to an MD convention in Phoenix, so it worked out OK. And my sister-in-law is on the beach at Malibu right by Pepperdine, and she seems all right. A lot of my younger cousins live in Northern Cal.

It's not going to stop, the fires, the floods, Unfortunately, there are lot of people living next to nature, forests etc. and there's hotter weather. I can't remember when it last rained? -One time, lightly, last month. It's Nov. and the weather is in the 70's and 80.s, but fortunately the humidity is high. When growing up, I only remember one fire, in 1961, the Bel Air fire; it was during the holiday season and my parents were up there at a party. I remember, afterward, when I would visit a close friend up in Bel Air, right across the street a house had burned down and there was only a brick fireplace.

I live in Westwood (UCLA) right by Century City where some of my family live. I would, if possible, never, live in the canyons, or hillsides in Southern California because after the fires are the floods.

And then there are the earthquakes!

I was under the impression you lived in Oklahoma (the stadium) but the flood was in Kansas. Which? I guess both have floods, droughts, and tornados?

Hi again. I am just wanting to alert you to what's going on. I did some clean-up on this article and it was actually left alone for a few days, then in the last 24 hours or so, he's charged back in, quite inappropriately at some points. I am about to start work on a RfC on the editor, but in the meanwhile, I wanted you to be aware. Check the note I left at Talk:Karyn_Kupcinet#Basic_Wikipedia_housekeeping_and_clean-up and the resultant rant and rave that was left in response in the section below that. There is no spirit of collaboration, he doesn't even attempt to follow even the most basic of style guidelines (changing Kupcinet back to Karyn, yada yada). Wildhartlivie Must Stop Vandalizing.

Please tell the contributor with the screen name "Wildhartlivie" to stop vandalizing the article on Karyn Kupcinet.

I sent this same request to the "Requests for Assistance" page more than twelve hours ago, but I have not heard from them. I can't find the page for requesting arbitration. I am writing you because last week Wildhartlivie persuaded you to ban me from editing, but I could not defend myself.

Wildhartlivie says I am adding "original research" to the Kupcinet article because I cited microfilmed newspaper articles about Dr. Harold Kade, the coroner who did Kupcinet's autopsy. Those are newspaper articles, not my original research. They tell us that Dr. Kade made so many mistakes reporting on dead people that he was asked to resign, and he did. Wildhartlivie has removed those additions to the article several times.

Wildhartlivie insists on removing from the article a report (that I sourced) about certain Los Angeles sheriffs' officials believing Kupcinet may have died from an accidental fall. I explained that their investigation led them to believe that, but Wildhartlivie insists on calling this "gossip" by "the police." That is a cracked fantasy. They were sheriffs, not police. They don't gossip.

Wildhartlivie constantly threatens to ban me from all editing, but doing that is unfair unless I can defend myself. I think you should ban Wildhartlivie. I await your reply before I say more. Thanks for reading. Dooyar 06:19, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Oklahoma to be featured on Main Page The time is here, and we knew it was coming. November 16 is Oklahoma's centennial, and, as expected, WikiProject Oklahoma's newest featured article will appear on the Main Page. Oklahoma will be the first article produced by WikiProject Oklahoma featured on the Main Page since October 23, 2005, when Black Seminoles was featured. Jim Thorpe has also been featured, coming on August 13, 2004. Though featured articles for the main page are always selected by Raul654, Oklahoma's 100th anniversary makes its main page appearance a near sure thing. As of early November 6, Oklahoma had 14 nods of support, with none in opposition. All are welcome and encouraged to help spruce up the article as much as possible for its main page debut, as well as lend a hand in anti-vandalism efforts on November 16th. Wikiproject Oklahoma gets a new Wikipedia ad Thanks to User:Miranda, Wikiproject Oklahoma has joined the ranks of WikiProjects with ads to welcome new editors. On November 5, the ad, in banner form, was completed two days after its request, becoming the 107th Wikipedia ad. The ad, located at Qxz-ad107.gif, can also be seen on WikiProject Oklahoma's project page. Those interested in having the ad on their user pages can add "{{wikipedia ads}}", which displays a random ad picture. An alternative is to simply add the image directly, avoiding unwanted ads. Over 100 articles added to project During the month of October, including Novermber 2, 104 new articles were added to WikiProject Oklahoma. November 2 saw 65 articles added to the wikiproject, all by User:SkiersBot, which adds articles to wikiproject corresponding to tags, such as articles with Oklahoma-related stub tags.
