Conflict of interest edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article User:Klmarathon/Standard Chartered KL Marathon, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:

  1. editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
  2. participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
  3. linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).

Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:50, 1 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but it is considered inappropriate for such groups to use Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organization for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, or organization. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company or organization. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block.

Request reason:

Dear Admin,

I noticed that my article has been "indefinitely block". Hence, I would like to make an appeal on this case.

I have been an avid user of Wikipedia and I have tried to write best using the Wikipedia lingo - but unfortunately it is deemed as an advertisement. I have used London Marathon as guide page to write on my article i.e. Standard Chartered KL Marathon (SCKLM), one of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia flagship annual running event, which is going to be in their third year in 2011. I tried to contribute as much info that I can compiled - since I notice that some Wikipedia page is very brief if we compared to traditional encyclopedia e.g. the World Book.

The references are mainly gathered from SCKLM official website - which is the most reliable source e.g. the winners, the runners, etc.

Hence, I am appealing to be unblocked and please advise on where I can improve on my article to get it published because it is not my intention to advertise the event but merely sharing the facts on Wikipedia, just like any other contributors.

I have contacted the ArbCom and they adviced me to post an unblock at this page.

Your kind assistance and response is very much appreciated.

Thank you again. Klmarathon (talk) 01:50, 13 December 2010 (UTC)

Decline reason:

We aren't allowed to use the name of an organization as our usernames, but you didn't specify that you have a plan for changing your username. You also didn't address the conflict of interest guidelines, and it sounds from your request as though you do not have a plan for following those guidelines. It's therefore not possible for me to unblock at this time.

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Request reason:

Dear Admin, Refer to:

Decline reason: 1. We aren't allowed to use the name of an organization as our usernames, but you didn't specify that you have a plan for changing your username.

I must admit that it is tough understanding the whole contribution guidelines as a first timer. The name was chosen since the article is about KL Marathon. However, I am more than willing to change the user name but I'm quite confused on how changing user name works, does changing user name means creating new account?

2. You also didn't address the conflict of interest guidelines, and it sounds from your request as though you do not have a plan for following those guidelines. It's therefore not possible for me to unblock at this time.

As I explained before, most of the information gathered from SCKLM are from the official website, since it is the most reliable source of information for the event, with no intention of promoting the website or spamming Wikipedia, unless blogs are also regarded as reliable source of information.

I am in the midst of adding more information to the history KL Marathon, way before Standard Chartered becomes the title sponsor - since 1984 with the information I obtained from the research done. These information were not obtained online but through researches and interviews.

Hence, I'm appealing again for my account to be unblocked - so that I could include more information and improve my writing style - which has been deemed as promotional. Once again, it is not my intention to promote anyone, merely to share the information of KL Marathon on Wikipedia, like any other bigger marathons published on Wiki.

Thank you very much.

Decline reason:

A few points:

  1. The main reason for your block is your username. Instructions on how to request a change of name are shown in the first block message which you received above, under the heading What can I do now?
  2. Please place any further unblock requests below this message, on Wikipedia we place new messages at the bottom of the page, not the top
  3. Information about an organisation from the organisation's own website is not enough - there needs to be information verifying the information at reliable sources which are independent of the subject (for example, mainstream newspapers) which show that the company meets Wikipedia's notability criteria for organisations.

However, before anything else can happen, you need to request a change of username, and convince an administrator that you will follow the guidelines on Wikipedia. -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 07:06, 14 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

Here are a few key questions:

You are currently blocked because your username appears directly related to a company, group or product that you have been promoting, contrary to the username policy. Changing the username will not allow you to violate the 3 important principles above.

Request reason:

Dear Admin,

Thank you for the guide (PhantomSteve).

I am requesting to be unblock to allow me to do proper editing and hopefully to get the article published following Wikipedia's policy.

Therefore:

1. I have rewritten the whole article on Kuala Lumpur marathon to meet Wikipedia's criteria - neutral, simple and factual with enough reference. Hopefully, it can be reviewed again and this time, being approved. 2. Proposed to change my usename.

To get unblock because my current username KLmarathon doesn't meet the Wikipedia's policy. I truly regret this and please note that it is not intentional.

This is my first contribution and I hope to contribute again. I am definitely learning a lot on the writing style required by Wikipedia. Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance and consideration.

Accept reason:

I have softened the block, so you can now create a new account. Just click here and you're on your way. Please bear in mind the information you've been given and do mind the conflict of interest guideline. Also, don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. You might like to use the process at WP:AFC if you want a second opinion on the new text of the article. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 19:58, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I am happy with your suggested change of username. you say that you have "rewritten the whole article". Perhaps you could post it below, so that we can see how it looks. If it seems that you really have addressed the issues referred to, then you can probably be unblocked. JamesBWatson (talk) 16:28, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Since an administrator has now decided to allow you to change your user name, you can ignore my suggestion of posting the rewrite here. JamesBWatson (talk) 20:12, 28 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I have followed the instruction by HJ Mitchell and created a new account with new usename: brainyblondie (following username availability).
