Phillies Mets

Hey KillerVogel - I added two sub sections on the Phillies-Mets rivalry page. It's the first steps into the 1980s-history which I believe to be important to understanding today's rivalry. I remember the Mets-Phillies game in the late 1980s when the Mets fans would come down and tell us how much better Howard Johnson was than Schmidt. The Dykstra piece is key because it was fun to have him and rub it in the Mets' face about what a lopsided trade it was. Any suggestions on page-presentation would be welcome. Best regards! Google news is outstanding. I search Google under, say, "Phillies Mets brawl" and then specify a series of dates - say 1989 or 1990. Then go to Google: News. It returns newspaper articles. Most are paid archives but there's a handful that are free and have the original article. Just look for the references without a price next to it.

Worcester Ruby Legs ==> Worcester Worcesters

This move was a bit abrupt and discussion-free. I'm not saying it wasn't proper, but given that most sites (and most pertinently Retrosheet) refer to them as the Ruby Legs, I think it needs a bit more justification than has been provided thus far. -Dewelar (talk) 17:40, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Looking more closely at the source, if anything it supports just "Worcesters" (in the same way that the predecessor of the Pirates was simply the "Alleghenys", and the "Pittsburg" part was appended later), not "Worcester Worcesters", which is really nonsensical when you consider it. -Dewelar (talk) 17:45, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Abrupt, in this case, just meant "without warning". I agree, as I said above, that the name of the team was, if anything, "Worcesters". However, the page had been at Ruby Legs for nearly a year, and was moved to Ruby Legs by an editor (Neonblak) whom I trust above most others on 19th century baseball. I don't think that pointing out that the argument erupted when Myers called him a retard and was asked how to spell 'retard' is 'wanton profanity' or redundant. I think it is essential to the section because this is where Myers really loses his temper. I guess we don't need to say that Myers told him he doesn't 'know shit about fucking baseball', but the fact that he called him a 'retard' is important. Thanks for the quick response. Well the offensiveness of the word retard is exactly WHY I think it should be included. Myers directly insults the man by calling him this word, and the man responds calmly by saying "how do you spell 'retard'?" which is where everything hit the fan. I just think the way it is now downplays the entire incident. It was a pretty big deal. Pete Rose

I just left a message for Wizardman as he is one of the few administrators I am familiar with. If you read the discussion that went on about Pete Rose's infobox, I'm just doing what the concensus seemed to be. You'll also note that I pointed out in that discussion that he was pulling this crap for a while.

I don't know what is wrong with him. He seems to follow me around reverting edits I do and changing things I've written for the worse. I've looked at his talk page, and it isn't just me he does this to.

I don't really feel that I am in violation of anything; I went along with the concensus on Rickey Henderson which, by the way, I ABSOLUTELY disagree with. This doesn't seem to be a personality trait Yankees10 has.--Johnny Spasm (talk) 20:11, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

• I understand that, but including CS only in the catcher's article builds in a bias wherein Wikipedia is effectively saying that catchers are the only force that play a part in controlling the running game, which is fundamentally untrue. I'm not saying include +/- or UZR or other advanced fielding stats, I'm just saying that at least SB/CS (and perhaps pickoffs as a particular kind of fielding out) are necessary to understand the full contribution of a pitcher to fielding. Harridge & Giles trophies

Hi, KV5. As you may have seen on the Talk page for List of Major League Baseball awards, I found web sources for the ALCS & NLCS trophies. I realize that neither one has its own Wiki article. All the same, both trophies are mentioned in the respective ALCS/NLCS articles -- albeit without citation/verification (before today). After finding sources on the web, I just added footnote references to both the ALCS and NLCS pages. May I suggest adding the two trophies back onto the List of Major League Baseball awards? They are, in fact, MLB trophies and (arguably) second only to the Commissioner's Trophy. The absence of corresponding Wiki pages might be an impetus for someone to create pages for them. To be more specific, I think the article is fine, but I suggested a hook that I think would be more interesting (I think there are several possible more interesting hooks for this article, although the original does have the virtue of summarizing the article) and the source for the hook doesn't quite state the fact given in the hook, but merely implies it (although I know it is true, and I am sure a direct source could be found). Can you please cite the definite rule imposed by Wiki on what is allowed (or disallowed) in any Infobox information or how many you can list (up to six)? I quote your comment: "do not include non-Triple Crown stats unless the player is a franchise/MLB career leader." Since when did that rule you cite start after you have seen it all this time, when you can list up to six pieces of information? Career Managerial Record of Charlie Manuel

I feel I've got to remind you of the discussion we had a few weeks back about this issue. I objected to the removal of the career managerial record table, and because you insisted on continuing to remove it, I gave it its own article. If the table is left in the article, I also see no reason for it to have its own article. You'll recall that that solution was not even my first choice. It was your insistance that the abscence of such a table was established "consensus" that prompted me to split it into a separate article.

Frankly, I'd love to know what prompted you to decide to leave the table in the article as it is now. In any case, the bottom line, for me, is this: if the table is left in the article, I have no objection to the deletion of the separate article. I maintain that the table is a perfctly readable and valuable addition to the article...and why not have ample readable, sensible information in each and every article? This is, after all, an encyclopedia. I also have to continue to object to the "consensus" against the inclusion of such tables. Look at the pages of coaches and managers at the professional and collegiate level, you'll find that most include a records table...and I applaude this.

Anyway, I've posted our original coversation from the Charlie Manuel talk page below for your reference:

• Thanks for the support, how should I mention the All-Star Game generally in the lead? Maybe just steal the lead sentence from the All-Star Game article, so stick this in as sentence #2: "The All-Star Game is an annual baseball game between players from the National League and the American League, currently selected by a combination of fans, players, coaches, and managers." • Looks good to me. The only thing I might do is 1. Move Cy Young Award directly under MVP (it's of similar status) and 2. Move Babe Ruth Award into the third column. That keeps them balanced; puts MVP and CYA together; puts World Series, LCS, and ASG MVPs together; and keeps most of the "name" awards (Branch Rickey, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, etc) together. • First I definitely agree with the merge, it's one award under two names (like how the MVP award article is formatted). Second, I think it's clearly notable enough for inclusion. Our goal should be expansion from that list where it is logical (I mostly just don't want DHL Delivery Man, because that award is a brand-new direct clone of the Rolaids award).
