Bill Herring (minor league pitcher)

Just a quick question. I was wondering if you remember if, when you updated Bill Herring (minor league pitcher) if you got that DOB from Baseball Reference or not. I know that the site sometimes updates based on Wikipedia and I'm trying to track down where that date of birth comes from, so that I can in turn track done Herring's date of death. Thanks. Infobox collegiate baseball team (November 4th TfD)

Greetings, Dewelar. Just wanted to let you know that I think it's safe to proceed with a merge of "Infobox collegiate baseball team" into "Infobox college baseball team" per DJSasso's comment on the November 4th TfD discussion. I've reviewed the content of both templates and see no problem with this. It will really be a manual migration of the 53 instances of "collegiate" to "college," followed by the deletion of "collegiate." This is a weird one, and I can't really even explain why the "collegiate" infobox was created. It may be that "college" was the newer replacement template, and the college baseball teams below NCAA Division I never got the new version. Well, the problem is that he's proposed the other for deletion, too, and therefore no merge should take place until the results of today's TfD have been determined, so my vote is based on that only. Dewelar, do a search of "Pigs on the Wings" at the ANI archives. It provides interesting reading. Andy Mabbett, as he is also known, has provided some interesting moments on the WP drama boards over the years.

As for the November 4th TfD, Djsasso and I have already hijacked it to accomplish a good outcome (it was originally proposed by Frietjes, not Pigs/Andy). And, based on what I've seen so far, Andy's November 14th en masse TfD is going nowhere fast. Several of these templates probably should be merged, but the American MLB, Japan and Taiwan templates deserve careful consideration by Wikiproject Baseball before any action is taken. So noted. I am not very fond of drama, so I will do my best avoid Mr. Mabbett where possible. Still, I believe that the 11/4 discussion should not be closed until the 11/14 one is complete, just as a matter of process. Presuming you are correct, it will eventually be moot. To answer your question on why it might have been created. If you look at the history of the page it originally was created with a different name, that of a specific conference. So my guess is it started out only being for teams in a specific conference and then someone renamed it to be "general" not realizing there already was such a template. -DJSasso (talk) 02:06, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Since you were unable to understand what I said before, I will say it more simply. You are wrong. "Private Idaho" can refer to either of those things. People might use "Private Idaho" to mean either of them. It does not help readers to say that only one of them is called "Private Idaho". One is more basic than the other, or neither is. The album by The Outfield is obviously the primary topic, given its greater overall prominence, and since there are only two pages there is no need for a disambiguation page. Dan Sheehan Entry

I have happened across the listing for baseball player "Dan Sheehan" and noted that the listing claims he is the same person as John M. Ryan. I believe that is not true, but did not want to edit it without being certain. Baseball-Reference lists Dan Sheehan as "Dan Sheahan" and that player is an outfielder and third baseman with 36 career PA playing for two teams in the 1884 season, the Nationals and Quicksteps. John Ryan is a pitcher with the 1884 Monumentals and has 27 career PA. I am unable to find any evidence that this player was playing for a third team that season and using a different name. Further, it appears that "Sheahan" is the correct spelling of his name. Also note that RetroSheet believes these players to be separate people as well. Hopefully this helps! Okay, as per your note, I have updated the Dan Sheehan listing. Perhaps it is worth a new page for the now separate John Ryan? I'm relatively new to Wikipedia though so I'll have to leave that to someone with a bit more technical skill. It seems my account is too new to make the change from "Sheehan" to "Sheahan" in the article title. If you wouldn't mind, please move it on my behalf. Also, found that there is a John Ryan article already, but it is just a redirect. For the moment, I have broken that redirect since they're different people - probably ruining about 500 active Dan Sheahan-related research papers in the process! Thanks for the warm welcome! I did some more follow-up research today on the Dan Sheahan/John Ryan issue, not being entirely satisfied with my earlier results. It seems that Dan Sheahan did indeed play at least one game under the name "John M. Ryan", and a 2016 book confirms that this record belongs to Dan Sheahan. However, the article for "John Ryan" talks about "John A. Ryan" who was a real person and not the same person as Dan Sheahan. I believe that was the source of the confusion. In any case, I feel it may be prudent to move that developed "John Ryan" article to "John A. Ryan", though as before, Wikipedia won't let me because of my new account. As for the original redirect "John Ryan" well to be honest I don't know what to say about that, but perhaps it should be adjusted to "John M. Ryan" and pointed back at Sheahan since he did indeed play under that name at least once? In any case, I find this very interesting, and at the same time, I'd like to know more about where this confusion comes from, and how the researcher came to his conclusions (author David Nemec "The Rank and File of 19th Century Baseball") Otrex (talk) 23:52, 25 May 2017 (UTC)

I was able to track down a write up on Dan Sheahan just this evening, and wow, is he ever an interesting character. Looks like he played as John Ryan because of trouble with the law, but he himself becomes a police officer and shoots some people before being shot himself and going insane. Deborah Harry discography move to Debbie Harry discography

Hi, I am curious to know why you renamed the Deborah Harry discography page as Debbie Harry discography. While she was known as Debbie on her solo album and single releases between 1981 and 1988 inclusive, since 1989, all of her releases have credited her name as Deborah Harry. Was there any consensus established before initiating the page move? There does not appear to be any discussion about a proposed move on the article's talk page.Nqr9 (talk) 04:43, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your explanation on my talk page. I too saw that her main article was titled Debbie Harry. It's a difficult one, I suppose, because she *was* known as 'Debbie' during Blondie's heyday in the 70s and early 80s, which was when she was at the peak of her fame. I guess I'm just used to referring to her as Deborah, since that what she has been known as for most of her solo career, and since the discography page is relating solely to her solo career, it makes more sense to me for it to be credited to Deborah; but I see your point about both pages having different names for the artist they're referring to. I guess it could be a topic worth discussing and gaining consensus on, on the Debbie Harry talk page. The only other similar examples I can immediately think of, where a solo artist has changed their name, are Debbie Gibson/Deborah Gibson, Terence Trent D'Arby/Sananda Francesco Maitreya, and Cat Stevens/Yusuf Islam. But each of these artists were by far more successful with the first name listed for each, and, accordingly, their wikipedia articles are named as such.Nqr9 (talk) 15:56, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi John! I'm conflicted. I "fixed" the book title to the logical style (with "i" capitalized) but only after checking various editions and finding their covers and in-book titles consistently set in ALLCAPS. I do not own a copy of this, so I am mainly going by English rules of titles, where "in" should be capitalized because it is not being used as a preposition (i.e., "spinner" is not a thing that is being come into), but is otherwise treated as . However, I will also note that per the images I found on Discogs, the rear insert does not have the title in all caps, and does capitalize the "I". Dewelar (talk) 20:38, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
