Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.

I'm hoping that the chance to help out local researchers, to engage in lively face-to-face discussion with other Seattle Wikipedians, and to contribute to Wikipedia in a new way will entice you to join us. The session lasts 2 hours and snacks are provided. Sessions will be held on UW Seattle campus - directions will be sent after registration. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! Wikipedia is one of the most wide-reaching repositories of shared knowledge, yet a 2011 survey found that less than 10% of its contributors identify as female, suggesting an alarming absence of voices. What and how information is shared is skewed by this gender disparity. To help change this, the Jacob Lawrence Gallery is organizing a quarterly series of Edit-a-thons to improve Wikipedia's coverage of womxn artists of color. This Saturday afternoon's gathering will focus on creating, editing, updating, and expanding pages for womxn artists from Latin America and the Caribbean. The Edit-a-thon will feature a talk by Dan Paz, Lecturer in the UW School of Art + Art History + Design, an artist, and an educator who explores the labor of digital imaging production as a collaborative site where the intersections of the image-idea and lived experience are produced and contested. Through videos, photography, and sculptural projects that query the ability of documentary processes to be manipulated—to be multiplied and replicated, stopped and started, rewound and advanced—Dan works within the impossibilities of absolute replication to question the very ability of the image to truly represent. Tuesday evening, January 15, 2019, 6-9pm at Wayward Coffeehouse, 6417 Roosevelt Way NE #104, Seattle WA 98115 Wikipedia Day celebrates the anniversary of the founding of Wikipedia. This year in Seattle, Cascadia Wikimedians' celebration of Wikipedia Day will focus on a different closely related project: Wikimedia Commons, which (among other things) functions as the media repository for Wikipedia. When you see a photo or map in Wikipedia, or hear an audio clip, etc., it usually is hosted on Wikimedia Commons and "transcluded" into Wikipedia. Wikimedia Commons is a mix of users' own works and curated third-party content, either public domain or free-licensed. Our event is a hands-on workshop in curating third-party content, mostly early 20th-century photos of Seattle and other West Coast locations. Currently, Wikimedia Commons has two intersecting sets of older photos, one from the Asahel Curtis Photo Company and the other a more general set of Seattle images. At this meetup, we will celebrate the 18th anniversary of Wikipedia by further curating these images by the creation and addition of categories, adding ImageNotes where useful, linking other versions of the same photo, enhancing the descriptions, and identifying and correcting errors. User:Jmabel has already categorized over 1000 images and corrected several hundred wrong dates, misidentified buildings, and etc., but there is much more to be done. Well, good evening Liz. Frankly, I am a bit surprised that after many years of writing articles this is a new rule of some sorts. 1) I get it, translating a page form French is not a Wikipedia article a) I have done my best to actually create an article. If you think it should be a draft first... well alright, let's mark it as a draft.

Kdmitry There is no rule that articles must be created as drafts. There is also no rule that you can't translate from a Wikipedia article in another language - but that's not what you did; you translated from a copyright article on another site. However, in view of your failure to follow the guidelines first time round, you were asked to submit your article for review when you recreated it. Deb, I see that you are a volunteer administrator and a veteran of Wikipedia, I do appreciate your time and work. As an admin you should have a clear timeline of events, right? So let's review:

1. Author creates an article based on a translation of copyrighted material (not good)

2. The article is tagged for speedy deletion (rightfully so)

3. Admin Deb marks an article that was tagged for speedy deletion as a "draft" and suggests to re-submit it as a draft (alright, that's doable)

4. Author comes back to re-write the article in a required fashion to find that his article is fully deleted -- draft or otherwise, it is gone for good

5. Author re-writes a new article putting a lot of effort and research into it. It is published in the main space since the author considers this article worthy of Wikipedia standard and notable enough for the world to preserve the knowledge about cinematographic history. This particular Author has done so for many years without any issues, in fact not even being aware of "draft" mode existence up until admin Deb has mentioned it. Naturally, Author hopes that others will contribute to the article whenever it is necessary to enhance the material.

6. Another reviewer Onel5969 marks an article as "not notable", and "Uncategorized", since the author neglected to add categories, leaving the review open to a wide audience vs pointing to somebody with some kind of knowledge of the subject, or an interest in a specific category.

7. Author follows the rules and adds "notability" references, clearly following Wikipedia rules, then he removes the "not notable" tag exactly as Wikipedia rules guide him to do

8. A day later admin Deb returns to the space to chastise the Author for not following her advice (pardon me if I am wrong with my pronouns), saying that there's no RULE that prevents a user from doing exactly what he did. Moreover, she mixes up multiple events saying following your failure to follow the guidelines first time round and you were asked to submit your article for review while in the same sentence saying There is no rule that articles must be created as drafts. Additionally, admin Deb forgoes the history review of the current page and says You have also removed tags that were placed on your article second time around, while Wikipedia rules are clearly saying: Maintenance templates (or "tags") are not removed automatically. Even if you fix the issue(s) described in a maintenance template, the tag will remain in the article until you or someone else manually removes it. The mechanics of removal are usually as simple as clicking "Edit" at the top of the page or in the section involved (if you're not already in edit mode), removing the code that produces the display of the template, and leaving an edit summary, and saving the page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Maintenance_template_removal

The author has clearly done so by fixing the issues found and has added a comment while removing that tag, exactly as prescribed:

Removing "notability|1=Companies|date=August 2022" tag. Added context, categories, and more references should demonstrate the notable value of this entry. Totalvision was a European counterpart and competitor to Cinemascope in North America from the 1960s-the 1970s. The film format war is the rough equivalent of the VHS vs Betamax format war of the late 1970s into 1980s. It is significant to preserve references to that era and events for all who are interested in the cinematography's history

I'm not sure what the issue is you have here Kdmitry. You rightly accept your wrongdoing in posting a translated version of copyrighted material which I detected, and you accept that was not an appropriate action. deb should have deleted this outright rather than draftify, but that's by-the-by and we have resolved that matter. However, the advice/suggestion to you, that you were asked to develop any future iteration of the article in draftspace is entirely reasonable and based on the uncertainties surrounding your understanding of copyright and what is an appropriate article. I don't think there is any contradiction in the statement, as it's clearly stated writing a draft first is not mandatory (or a rule as you note), but that you were asked (as a voluntary action) to do so, but not required. The mention of moving maintenance tags may be due to a lack of additional sufficient/appropriate references to support the prose, though I do observe the additional of what appear to be two offline foreign-language sources. I do have concerns over the sourcing of the "Italy" section though.

For what it's worth, I think you have made a fair effort to address the copyvio concerns I raised and when I cross-checked, could not identify any copyvio issues on the current article. I am not wholly sold on notability, however as I noted to deb, that would only really be a matter of discussion if someone decided to raise an AfD. Hello, Kdmitry,

Frankly, I am not a bit surprised that "after many years of writing articles" (during which you've made a total of only 425 edits to the English Wikipedia), you didn't know the rules about copyright violations. You know them now so next time you won't get such an easy ride. When you create a new article, please make sure that it meets the Wikipedia criteria for inclusion or it will get deleted. If you're lucky, it will just get moved to draft. If you are so unfamiliar with the guidelines that you think IMDb is a reliable source, I recommend you don't remove tags on articles you've created without first checking with someone more experienced. This is why you should have used the Wikipedia:AfC facility second time around and you are very lucky that the article wasn't deleted a second time. You are the only one who is confused about the order of events.

Our guidelines are frequently tightened up, so you need to edit more than once a year in order to keep up with them. My advice to you is not to go around thinking you are hard done by until you actually have some experience of creating acceptable articles. Deb (talk) 08:31, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
