Welcome to the Washington State Historical Society on the English Wikipedia! This is a project focused on sharing Washington State Historical Society resources with the public and improving Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the history of Washington and the Pacific Northwest. Our goal is to encourage collaboration between the Wikimedia community, the Washington State Historical Society, and other cultural organizations contributing content to related WikiProjects and enhance learning experiences for Wikipedians. Please make suggestions for accomplishing this goal on the talk page.

Guiding principles edit

  • Encourage and contribute Wikipedia content related to the history of Washington and the Pacific Northwest.
  • Improve and increase public access to Washington StateHistorical Society resources that support Wikipedians’ research and writing.
  • Encourage online volunteer assistance with the GLAM/WSHS WikiProject.

WSHS resources edit

The Washington State Historical Society collects, preserves, and shares the state’s history. As a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1891, the WSHS is recognized by the State of Washington as a trustee agency. It owns and operates the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Washington.

Project Goals edit

  • Expand Wikipedia content.
  • Enhance learning experiences for Wikipedians.
  • Actively support other Wikimedia collaborations.
  • Serve as a model Wikipedia project.

Tasks edit

  • Assist individual Wikipedians and WikiProject collaborations with content research, writing, and editing.
  • Identify and attribute WSHS-related resources on Wikimedia sites.
  • Share WSHS resources as allowed under copyright laws.
  • Request digitization of WSHS resources to assist Wikipedians with online research.
  • Participate in related Wikimedia GLAM initiatives.
  • Host GLAM/WSHS events.
  • Track outcomes of GLAM/WSHS efforts.

Expected outcomes edit

  • Improve Wikipedia content related to the history of Washington or the Pacific Northwest using the extensive resources of the WSHS.
  • Organize activities for Wikimedia volunteers to encourage and facilitate use of WSHS resources for Wikipedia content development and develop Wikipedia editing skills.
  • Collaborate with Wikipedians and other WikiProjects to develop content that relates to Washington history topics and the history of the Pacific Northwest.
    • The intention is not to duplicate other WikiProjects, but to enhance these efforts with relevant content and related WSHS resources.
    • The WSHS editor, Suffrage100wa, functions as a liaison for connecting the Wikimedia community to the WSHS.
  • Serve as a model GLAM project for state and local history historical organizations.

Getting started edit

There are several ways to participate in GLAM/WSHS.

Volunteer support edit

Suffrage100wa, is currently the Washington State Historical Society's Wikimedia liason, and in this capacity, seeks to support GLAM/WSHS participants in improving existing and creating new Wikipedia and Wikimedia content related to the history of Washington and the Pacific Northwest. GLAM/WSHS tasks include reviewing, writing, and editing Wikipedia content; requesting digitization of WSHS resources to assist Wikimedians with research; participating in Wikipedia and GLAM initiatives to encourage collaboration; hosting GLAM/WSHS events; and tracking GLAM/WSHS outcomes. This public historian welcomes collaborations on projects related to Washington history or assisting in locating related resources. Feel free to post a message on Suffrage100wa talk.
