Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Vermont Education

Thanks Jonas! It has been on my "to-do" list for a while. It covers a fair bit of history, and how it ties to the 1777 constitution. Now someone needs to really clean up the economy section. Overall a good page, and while I feel very proud of my homestate, too often people get blindsided by their idealism, and POV creeps in. I am sure I am guilty of that on some level too but have tried to stick to the facts!CApitol3 01:09, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

BC/AD and BCE/CE

This is a well-tread topic in Wikipedia, right up there with abortion and British vs. American spellings. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Eras, from which I quote, "Both the BCE/CE era names and the BC/AD era names are acceptable, but should be consistent within an article" ... "it is inappropriate for a Wikipedia editor to change from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change" ... "Revert warring over optional styles is unacceptable". Therefore the changes that you made to Confucianism, an article that was already uniformly using BC/AD dates were inappropriate; please refrain from making unilateral changes on touchy issues like this and join in the community discussion on the issue instead. --Marlow4 23:13, 1 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for pointing out that people should not unilaterally decide to add sourcing information without references. I was tired of arguing, and it was nice someone else spoke up. IT IS APPRECIATED! If he wants references, the Muslim histories also speak of a week of waiting and light skirmishes, as the invading Umayyad forces waited for their entire army to gather, so his claim it was "christian" sources is plainly wrong historically. old windy bear 16:31, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I left him a note saying that he should be checking the discussion we've had. And that if he has actual sources, he ought name them. But that labeling things 'Christian' or 'Muslim' is really not doing any good.--Jonashart 16:42, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it probably could be renamed, but the attacks on it are the same ones brought against our article on Martel and Tours. Actually, I feel it needs more than that, I acted with the best intentions of the project in mind. At no point did I try to cause anyone grief or difficulty, you were added because I genuinely thought something dangerous was happening not becuase I was trying to get appreciation or following some rulebook. You can judge me on the appropriateness of my actions. If you feel I done something genuinely bad then leave a note on my talk page; I will act on it. If you need anything, just ask. Perhaps the critical aspect we're overlooking here is defining what makes something a credible source. As I've said before, just because we can find a quote from someone that we can cite, doesn't mean we've proven any given point. Just because it's not our opinion we're using, doesn't make that an unbiased source. The issue with citing a source like Frontpage Magazine is that they have a particular agenda. We cannot, in good faith, assume something to be true just because they say so. If, say, the NYTimes, CNN, 4 scholars, and two judges say that the footbaths are truly unconstitutional (and give their reasons), then that's pretty well sourced. It's no enough to say that someone else says so too. Sources need to be vetted, in a way. Unfortunately, I have yet to find and Wiki policy on sourcing, other than how to source. Now, that said, there is really nothing that is truly unbiased, in the sense that bias is just those influences that color one's perspective. But bias can be alot more than that, and when it comes to sourcing, we need to be aware of that. In short, there are good sources, and there are bad sources. I would advise you to take a look at the sources again for that statement. They are indianapolis local news and msnbc. In any case FrontPageMag is also a reliable source because its not a blog and a newssource and there is no wiki policy against using it like you said. Hi, NS. I made a case against FrontPageMag (David Horowitz's publication) at your talk page. It's interesting that Jonas has expressed the same concern. He and I have not compared notes, so you might want to take this concern seriously.

Frontpage magazine is NOT a source for the footbath issue. Read my post above and rechek the sources. For your convenience:

Both the sources are saying that the footbaths have caused an "uproar" or "stir" but FCYTravis is arguing along the lines of where is the proof of other religions being denied the facility and is still saying its not a controversy. This is a clear violation of WP:Point NapoleansSword 18:47, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Let's take a look at what is actually said: the 'uproar' and 'stir' is the issue being taken by one guy. One guy who, as a reverend of a different faith, is more likely have specific and biased opinion against Islam. Let alone that the guy's kid was killed in the current war. Thus, defining one guy's opinion as a "controversy" is stretching the definition. Now, one of the articles does mention another issue at the university as well. If there were a pattern of "controversy" as indicated by lots of these kinds of issues, that would be different. Hey Jonas, I didn't forget your request, I've been meaning to take a look at Talk:Islam in the United States in depth for a while now, but it's so big and unwieldly that frankly I've been putting it off. Now, I've just discovered I'm leaving town for a week or so on short notice, and won't be on Wikipedia at all for a week or so. Haven't even looked at the page in 3 days, so I don't know if the logjam has been broken or not. Please leave me a quick note on my talk page if you'd still like me to look at it late next week, and I'd be happy to (no procrastination this time).

The only comment I have so far, after spending 1/2 hour looking thru the talk page (I couldn't muster the courage to look at the archives), is that the article might benefit from something slightly more formal, like mediation, or an article RfC. Don't even know if that's been tried yet, but with the slow motion edit wars and talking past each other on the talk page, a fresh set of eyes or two might not help all that much.

Sorry, by procastinating a couple of days, this trip is now turning it into a couple of weeks. Good luck with the article until then. --barneca (talk) 16:53, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Two edit-a-thons coming up!

Hello there!

I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:

• This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
• On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

We have more stuff coming up in May and June, so make sure to keep a watch on the DC meetup page. As always, if you have any recommendations or requests, please leave a note on the talk page.

Adrianne Wadewitz Memorial edit-a-thons

Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows: May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library, in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library, in the Digital Scholarship Lab June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA), where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time. Washington, DC meetups in June

Greetings!

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

• On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
• Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
• The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
• Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
• Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

Wikipedia is better with friends, so why not come out to an event?

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

• February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
• February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
• February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Wikimedia DC celebrates Black History Month, and more!

Hello again!

Not even a week ago I sent out a message talking about upcoming events in DC. Guess what? There are more events coming up in February.

First, as a reminder, there is a WikiSalon on February 11 (RSVP here or just show up) and Wiki Loves Small Museums at the Small Museum Association Conference on February 15 (more information here).

Now, I am very pleased to announce:

• Tuesday, February 17 from 10 AM to 3 PM there will be #WikiTurgy at the University of Maryland. Join fellow theatre enthusiasts for a “mass act of public dramaturgy!”
• Thursday, February 19 from 10 AM to 4 PM we are hosting the Howard University Black History Edit-a-Thon. We are working in partnership with the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center to improve Wikipedia’s coverage of African-American and African diasporic history.
• Tuesday, February 24 from 6 PM to 8 PM we have the Black History Month “First Edit” at NPR. Help improve Wikipedia and help others make their first edit to Wikipedia!
• Finally, our monthly dinner meetup is on Saturday, February 28.

There is going to be a lot going on, and I hope you can come to some of the events!

February events and meetups in DC

Greetings from Wikimedia DC!

February is shaping up to be a record-breaking month for us, with nine scheduled edit-a-thons and several other events:

• On Friday, February 12, NPR will host a Black History Month First Edit event.
• On Saturday, February 13 and Sunday, February 14, we're working with the Wiki Education Foundation to hold a series of four edit-a-thons at the AAAS 2016 Annual Meeting.
• On Tuesday, February 16, we're holding the Smithsonian American Art Museum and American University WikiWorkshop with Professor Andrew Lih's class.
• On Saturday, February 20, the Smithsonian American Art Museum will host the African American Artists Edit-a-Thon.
• On Friday, February 26, Howard University will host its second annual Black History Month Edit-a-Thon.
• On Saturday, February 27, we have three different events. In the morning, we're holding an Accessibility Edit-a-Thon at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. In the afternoon, we'll host our second February WikiSalon at Cove Dupont Circle, followed by our monthly dinner meetup at Vapiano.

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here
