Translating interwiki

Thanks, that's great, I just wanted to convey my old thoughts (I was doing that too). Many other wikis have "featured articles", and translating them is quite straightforward (yes, time consuming). One issue is sourcing - we can't trust unreferenced information. Prose might get nicely polished, but the facts could be POVish or plain wrong. Unfortunately, many other wikis don't demand referencing, and I had to research that independently. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 09:07, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

DYK for Andalusia

An Award from Baldy

   The Spanish Barnstar of Excellence
Awarded to Jmabel with a veeeeeerrrrryyy great thanks for taking the time to write a proper encyclopedia article for Andalusia. Unfortunely most of the articles on Spain, Italy and France are diabolical, even those on major provinces and regions let alone municipalities, but this article is extremely well written and contains what is most important, referenced content. Keep up the great work and may you improve many more Spanish place articles!! Dr. Blofeld White cat 23:19, 15 December 2009 (UTC)

It probably needs a gallery. I saw there's another photo of that church (I think you took that one also?). Are there other shots of his other buildings? A better one of the chapel on Lewis and Clark College's campus would be good too. He did some interesting work. It's great to find a photo for something I'm working on. Writing and reading about architecture without images is pretty lame. Is the 1937 Barrett house he did still standing? That might be a good one... What are you up to this weekend? Ha ha. Take care. Fair use rationale for File:Kenneth Callahan Maritime 01.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Kenneth Callahan Maritime 01.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

File copyright problem with File:Picardo Venus 05.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Picardo Venus 05.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

1833 territorial division of Spain

Hi Jmabel, I'm afraid that I haven't understood your problems with the article (far better that the one I wrote for the Spanish Wikipedia). If you feel more comfortable writing in English, please, do so and I'll try to help you. Although my English is far from perfect, I can manage to understand most of any text, so possibly a conversation in English will be much more productive. We can talk in this Wikipedia. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 21:34, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

OK, I understand now (well, in fact I understood most of your initial message, but I wanted to double-check it). First of all, thank you for taking the time to create these articles. It very much helpful to show the Spanish culture to everyone. On the other hand, I wrote the article in a time when references were not so important :-). However, I've managed to find the reference (which even supported the mention to the first government of María Cristina). I understand other of your concerns when talking about "una simple circular". There wasn't a circular being the source of the decree. It was just that, the royal decree you mention and reference. My understanding of the text is that is a fairy simple text, without any extensive report supporting the decree, and that's why the author talks about "una simple circular".
I've added the reference to the article. If you think you need further details, don't hesitate to contact me. On the other hand, Spain politics and contemporary history are my speciality. Unfortunately, I'm working here almost a SPA very much focused on Gibraltar. Anyway, please, don't hesitate to contact me if you think I can be helpful. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 23:09, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel, with regard to the Pastrana's page, I'm feeling equally unconfortable with it as you. However, I guess it's difficult to find a better source. I'll try to do it and come with better references. Again, thank you for your effort. --Ecemaml (talk) 23:21, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

I read the article 1833 territorial division of Spain, and found it highly interesting. However, what about Ceuta and Melilla. They are marked as grey dots on the map, but not mentioned in the text. --Soman (talk) 11:00, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Valle de Villaverde

Hi Jmabel, as far as I understand, "corporación" in this context is "City Council". On the other hand, it seems that Valle de Villaverde (formerly named as Villaverde de Trucíos, that information is missing in the article) did ask for the integration in the autonomous community of the Basque Country (see here). However, what definitely needs a source is the statement about the PRC doing such a request. Now it's too late (0:45 AM) and I'm going to sleep, but tomorrow I can do some searches. Don't forget to do the searches using "Villaverde de Trucíos". Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 23:47, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

It happens in 2005. It seems that the first attempts to annex Villaverde to Vizcaya happened earlier, under socialist administration (see here) --Ecemaml (talk) 23:57, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Several issues

Hi Jmabel, I've been working in the Villaverde issue and I have found different references that possibly will be helpful:

  • In October 1986, the City Council of Villaverde, led by its mayor, Piedad González (then belonging to PSOE) approved to ask for the transfer to Biscay. See here. Six out of seven councilors supported the transfer. Thee distribution of councilors can be seen in here (at least one councilor of the PRC, which supported the transfer). Piedad González Sainz was the mayor of Villaverde since 1983, see here.
  • As of this reference Villaverde de Trucios, una "isla" santanderina en Vizcaya that you use, the interesting points were not only the mention to the aforementioned vote, but the fact that the mayor wasn't socialist anymore. That is, since the vote, she was expelled or quited the PSOE.
  • In the following elections (see here) you can see that the PSOE nor the PRC obtained any representation. Only the Partido Demócrata Popular.
  • If you read this (I'm not too keen on using it, since it has an obvious Basque nationalist POV, but it's useful when it comes to raw facts), you could see that Piedad Gonzáled repeated as mayor, now for the Agrupación Unitaria Independiente.
  • The Agrupación Unitaria Independiente repeated as the majority party in the 1991 elections. However, I don't know what happened with the mayor, which nowadays seems to belong to the PRC.

On the other hand, the reason to include Villaverde, as with Treviño was simply that in 1833 they were "señoríos" (possessions of the nobility, I don't know how to translate it). Thus, as they were abolished, they were integrated into the closest regular province (the Basque provinces and Navarre were a special type of territories and therefore, that rule didn't apply).

The second issue is related to this article. According to your references (which seem OK), there were no regions in the 1822 division (see División provisional del territorio español de 27 de Enero de 1822 since it didn't mention any region).

Hope it helps. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 22:08, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I've been translating "señorío/señoríos" as "seigneury/seigneuries". Not exactly a common English word, but I think it is the most appropriate. I'll get back to the Villaverde article in the next day or two. You might want to get this material into the es-wiki article: it would be nice to have that article more cited.
Thanks, also, on the 1822 point. I was probably overly swayed by someone else's map. I changed the colors to match the 1833 map, but didn't consider that the very coloring of the regions might be at issue. - Jmabel | Talk 22:19, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

I've finished the update of en:Valle de Villaverde. You could possibly find useful some references in there. Regards (and thank you for the challenges :-)) --Ecemaml (talk) 00:14, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Term Catalogue

Hi Jmabel, seeing you still around - would you be so kind and take a look into a small thing I have been editing during the last week? (Actually terribly much work to get the statistics, but the article itself is short and painless I hope, yet you know, I always make these German mistakes.) So much obliged, --Olaf Simons (talk) 14:11, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Cataloge was of course a mistake. Is that all right: "Poetic and fictional production does not yet have a unified place." The plural singular matter seems strange. --Olaf Simons (talk) 18:47, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
To a native speaker it does not read like a "plural singular". "Production" in English, used in this sense, is a rather abstract noun and is not normally pluralized. "Agricultural and industrial production", for example. The only times I can think of that the word gets pluralized is "Theatrical productions", a different sense of the word. If I stage a play and you stage the same play, each of those is a "production" of the play, and it is a single "production" no matter how many performances are given. Never needed to think about that one consciously before. - Jmabel | Talk 18:55, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Well I can live with the singular - the drop of the article is the odd thing. "Poetic and fictional materials do not have a unified place..." would sound all right, or "The p + f production does not..." If only I could get that feeling which I have in German without thinking about it. (Much obliged again) --20:01, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
I see. Yes, Spanish and Romanian (my other two reasonably strong languages) would both take a definite article here (or, in Romanian, the declension equivalent to a definite article) but English doesn't. All I can say is that it relates to a level of abstraction. One could, alternatively say either "Production of fiction and poetry does not yet have a unified place" or "The production of fiction and poetry does not yet have a unified place"; again, the former conveys a greater level of abstraction, suggesting the fact of fiction and poetry being produced, while the latter seems more to emphasize the process. Damn, this is subtle. Again, something one never needs to think about in one's native language. - Jmabel | Talk 20:15, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Re: Language help sought

Hi Jmabel, in the sentence you're referring to Martín Alonso Pinzón is the grammatical subject (though omitted, as Spanish language not only allows, but actually encourages).

The sentence in Spanish, with an explicit grammatical subject, would be as follows: "otras muchas [cosas] [él] me tiene hecho y dicho" or also "otras muchas [cosas] me tiene hecho y dicho [él]". So, the translation could be something such as "He has said and done [such things] to me". But always with "he" (Martín Alonso Pinzón) as subject. Mind that the original sentence in Spanish is somehow archaic (mainly in the construction of the sentence, setting first the object and then the subject; the omission of the subject is as usual as in current Spanish; also the archaic use of "tener" instead of "haber" for the present perfect tense) and currently it would have been said in a way similar to "[él] me ha hecho y dicho otras muchas [cosas]". Hope it helps. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 21:48, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome. Spanish language is usually tricky (more that English, I guess) Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 22:41, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel, I'll review the translation, but I'm currently finishing an article on my own, so I won't be able to do the review until tonight (Spanish time). Hope it's OK (on the other hand, I don't know whether I'll be able to properly review your translation, but possibly a "translation" to modern Spanish would be equally helpful, wouldn't it be?). Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 07:43, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel, I haven't forgotten you :-) Can you please wait an additional day? I'm overloaded and I haven't been able to process your translation yet :-( --Ecemaml (talk) 23:06, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi Jmabel, the modern Spanish "translation" would be as follows:

With regard to your proposal I have minor corrections:

With such strong winds from the east and southeast he did not leave that day, because of which he ordered that the caravel be supplied with water and firewood and all that was necessary for the entire voyage, because although he intended to travel by ship along that whole Hispaniola coast all what he could, but, because those he put in the caravels for commanders, brothers, to wit Martín Alonso Pinzón and Vicente Yáñez, and others who followed him with arrogance and greed estimating that everything was already theirs, not looking at the honor the Admiral had given them, they had not obeyed and did not obey his commands, before they had said and done many unmerited things against him, and this Martín Alonso left him from 21 November until 6 January without any cause or reason except disobedience, all of which the Admiral had suffered and been silent to bring a good end to his voyage, so that, to leave behind such bad company, with whom he says that it was necessary to dissimulate, although they were lawless people, and though he had to say that while with them that they were good men, because it was not the time to speak of punishment, he agreed to return and stop no more, as quickly as was possible ...

And finally I don't feel confortable with your translation of the sentence "y aunque tenía dice que consigo muchos hombres de bien", which I translate into modern Spanish as "y aunque decía que tenía consigo muchos hombres de bien" (although I don't actually understand). The issue here is that your translation seems more sensible than a literal translation. On the other hand, don't worry about the idiom "todo [lo] que andando el camino pudiese". It means more or less "as much as possible". And yes, it was a Genoese drunken academic ;-)

As told before, don't hesitate to contact me whenever you need help. Best regards --Ecemaml (talk) 22:10, 14 January 2010 (UTC) PS: the Spanish name of Hispaniola es es:La Española

Thanks again. I've edited, using some of your suggestions, and identified the obscure phrase as obscure, offering two possible parses. - Jmabel | Talk 01:45, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Pinzón Brothers

Excellent work on this article, Jmabel. Thank you very much! --Polylerus (talk) 17:15, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks! - Jmabel | Talk 18:31, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

It is a really good piece of work. Unfortunetly, when I checked it for DYK with Shubinators tool [1] it's not quite a 5x expansion. It was about 5430 chars before and you got it up to 20870 (unfortunetly the notes don't count). So it needs a bit more (I'm leaving the comment here rather than on DYK page because I'm not sure if you're still expanding it).

As a personal aside I do think that the 5x requirement for extensions for DYK noms is a bit ridiculous (and apparantly chosen only for sake of "symmetry" with the "5 days old" for new noms) precisely for this reason; you can do one helluva improvement to an article and still not meet the criteria.radek (talk) 21:54, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Need Translator

I've been doing this almost 3 months now and have spent most of that time on one Biography article I stumbled into when I first started, after reading your user page wow, you taught me alot in just several minutes, thank you for sharing your insight and experineces. I have a small issue/request, I'm in need of someone to assist me with a couple of references that are in German, for the Biography article of Michele Weiner-Davis I am working on in my sandbox, that support her mother. I can give you specific questions I have. If you can help me, please leave me a message on my talk page here:Tinkermen Wednesday January 13th

  • If it's not too lengthy, I'll do my best. Aim me at what you need. My German is just OK, not quite as strong as my Spanish (and definitely rustier). - Jmabel | Talk 07:50, 15 January 2010 (UTC)
I tried using the Google Translator today and I think I'll be able to get enough info to fill in the cite reference we'll enough, so I should be o.k. Thank you for the offer. I learned something from your experiences and it will help me deal with what is to come, in regards to dealing with other editors deleting what you've written. I had never thought that far ahead about how it might make me feel if my own hard work is deleted, looks like something I will experience at some point and have to go through. I try to write straight from what the references say or the story they tell. I'm hoping the closer I am to the truth about anything I write about will be able to hold up. I have learned so much in just 3 months but can see this takes a year or so to really get through the learning curve.Tinkermen (talk) 21:15, 15 January 2010 (UTC)

Your allegation is untrue

I do not use rollback in "content disputes" and I really do not appreciate you going to WQA, making an untrue allegation against me. I chose to ignore your "warning" because a) it was untrue and you seem to be close to Ecemaml who frequently introduces contentious edits on Gibraltar related articles and doesn't engage in talk when requested to do so. I have made a polite request that he stays away from my talk page, because whenever I have to interact with him he is tendentious, argumentative and confrontational. He continues to do so nonetheless and when he does I will remove his postings and any proxy doing so on his behalf. Justin talk 21:56, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

I would appreciate an explanation as to why you felt it necessary to issue a WQA, making an allegation that was patently untrue. Justin talk 17:31, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
  • I issued a WQA because the way you dealt with my initial remark (using precisely that same tool to remove it) struck me as discourteous in itself, and I decided that it was best for me to get out of the way and try to get an editor who was no way engaged in the matter to look at the matter. In short, I was recusing myself, and trying to get someone else to make the judgment. If there was, indeed, no problem, then I'm sure that was the conclusion they reached. - Jmabel | Talk 17:35, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
Except that I didn't use rollback and it would have been easy to verify for yourself that it was patently untrue. It strikes me as discourteous to repeat an unfounded allegation on my talk page, after I'd removed a posting with a false allegation by an editor who I have both politely and directly requested to cease posting on my talk page. It is more than discourteous to repeat that false accusation on the WQA noticeboard. I also have a note on my talk page dealing precisely with this issue, so how you can say it was discourteous to remove further unfounded allegations is beyond me. So to summarise, you've repeated an unfounded untrue allegation twice, discourteous of itself, and airily dismiss that on the second occasion you repeated an unfounded allegation without even bothering to check. There was indeed no problem and that is precisely the conclusion reached, what I find amazing is that having read your wikibio, it is the same experienced editor who has behaved with such an appalling lack of courtesy and yet accuses other of discourtesy. Bizarre at the very least I expected an apology not for you to justify yourself. Justin talk 20:49, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
I apologise, since it turned out to be unfounded. - Jmabel | Talk 21:23, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
