Everett History

I saw your recent comment on the Everett talk page. My interest is in early history of Everett, but later history is what the page is mostly lacking. I just added an article on the Rucker Brothers. As I mentioned in the talk page for the Rucker Brothers, I was thinking specifically of the Rucker mansion and perhaps the Rucker monument at Evergreen Cemetery. Neither is really necessary, but they might be nice. Perhaps there are already photos available. I don't know where to look nor how to determine copyright status. Castile-La mancha

On the gules or red, I understand - the "quarter" bits are more complicated though (specifically). Although sticking to the Spanish translation has the benefit of being backed up, "quarter" is not proper English here. I'm aware "cuartel" translates as "quarter" but here it gets in the way of readability. Many readers would be confused, as was I. I suggest "half", which translates closely, but is more easily understood. That's just one thing though - I didn't realise you were sticking to the exact translation as closely as you were. (For the record, I was answering the call at WT:HV.) Keep up the good work: I was shocked at the improvements that can still be made, considering it's a primary level region of a "Western" country! - Jarry1250 ^{[Humorous? As a logged-in user, you can pick your size for thumbnails (go to Special:Preferences and click the "Appearances" tab). If explicit numbers are given in the article, it overrides these user preferences. So someone who has chosen (as I have) 250px gets smaller images than they normally want.

I don't necessarily agree with Wikipedia's choice of default (which is pretty small), but the point is that individual articles shouldn't adopt a different style. If you want Wikipedia's default to change, that should be discussed on the village pump, not overridden on one particular article you happen to care about. The only times the article should take charge of the size of an image are (1) when the image is not legible at a small size, such as some graphs or maps or conversely, (2) when the original of the image is tiny, and you don't want to blow it up beyond its actual size. - Jmabel | Talk 06:43, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Very few articles in Wikipedia come near the "good article" standards on most fronts. They are undercited, poorly written, and nonstandard in lots of other ways. Look at the "good articles" and "featured articles" for examples of how to do it right, not by the importance of the topic. Photo: No strong opinion. I kind of liked having a bird, since so much of the text (which I just added) is about birds. I think we could adjust the pictures and get the bird back in, though. I'll admit that living in the Pacific Northwest, the brown bear and the wolves are a bit ho-hum (run of the mill): around here, they are things we have to be wary of when hiking.

Music: I don't listen to a ton of Spanish music. Aside from traditional stuff (flamenco, etc.) there are a few groups I do like: I was a definite fan of the quasi-rockabilly Los Rebeldes from Madrid, and have a weird affection for Alaska y los Pegamoides. But, really, I find most Spanish music that isn't traditionally based to be a pale imitation of British and American styles. Now Spanish-language music is another matter, including a lot of great music from Cuba & the Caribbean (I grew up in New York, so this was part of my world), some Mexican stuff (my housemate, who lived for years in Mexico, gives me shit for liking corridos, but we can agree on Café Tacuba, Kinky, etc.), and a lot of Mexican-American stuff (on the more traditional side, Flaco Jiménez, on the less traditional, the L.A. hip-hop group Akwid's Spanish-language material is some of my favorite hip-hop, though their English-language stuff is nowhere near as good). And, weirdly, because of my family's leftist politics, I grew up learning Spanish Republican songs from the Spanish Civil War. One of the sentences I could speak in Spanish was "Sueño y una ametralladora, y Franco se va paseo." Yes, translating among any of the Iberian Romance languages is usually a matter of changing spelling and the occasional root word. English, while technically Germanic, is really not very close to any of the other major Germanic languages. It's no easier for an English-speaker to learn German than to learn Spanish. We expect a serious struggle to learn any foreign language, though of course once I learned Spanish, a certain competence in other Romance languages was not much harder than for a native Spanish-speaker.

Here in the US, English-Spanish bilingualism is actually pretty common, to the point that if someone is described as "bilingual" and no further description is given, English and Spanish are the two languages presumed. About 10% of my high school back east were native Spanish-speaker (mostly Cubans and Puerto Ricans). Even here in Seattle - which is 3,000+ kilometers from Mexico - it's a running joke that most restaurant kitchens operate mainly in Spanish (and a bit of Tagalog), even in (for example) Greek or Italian restaurants. Every good waiter or waitress I know has learned at least a smattering of Spanish to talk better to the kitchen staff. But it certainly goes beyond little things like that: are you familiar with El Vez or Guillermo Gómez-Peña? Both of them are performers who pretty much presume a bilingual audience, and if you only have one of the two languages (either one), you are going to miss a lot (especially with Gómez-Peña; El Vez tends to size up the audience and switch more to one language or the other depending who is around). - Jmabel | Talk 20:58, 6 December 2009 (UTC)

I didn't write A place named Andalucía. I wrote The place name Andalucía. "Place name" is the colloquial English for topónimo; the English word "toponym" exists but is very erudite. We could also just say The name Andalucía or The word Andalucía. I don't want to say Etymology because that will drag us into the whole fight over the controversial etymology of Al-Andalus.

Article on Joe DeLaCruz

The problem is to have citable material. If you can direct me to things that have been published - newspaper articles, articles posted on organizational sites, etc. - that's great. Otherwise, the best thing you could do to help us expand this would be for you, yourself to write what you know and get it posted on some site that would be considered reliable (I imagine UIATF would be glad to host a good article on him, for example). I'm sure you understand why we can't just take unpublished family material and carry it straight into a Wikipedia article. For what it's worth, I ran into the same sort of issue writing about my own great aunt Lena Levine. I know a lot that I couldn't cite for, so didn't get to add.

Andalusia

Just an FYI, I think you're getting an unfair shake over at DYK regarding Andalusia being featured. I voiced my displeasure over at Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Andalusia. When quality, encyclopedic and very worthy articles are being rejected because of bean counting over references, that scares me. I think WP:V is on your side, as well as good old fashioned common sense, even if the WP:BUREAUCRACY is not. Agne^Cheese/^Wine 06:27, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your support. I've long since given up really fighting over these things. Sadly, the Wikipedia community seems to have decided in recent years that dull writing is not a problem, that focusing on antiquarian trivia rather than salient history is only a minor problem, but that failing to cite for uncontroversial matters makes an article unencylopedic. - Jmabel | Talk 06:47, 11 December 2009 (UTC)

I use to be a very active DYK regular and reviewer but decreased my activity when a small, vocal minority of the bean counting crowd took hold. I know feel a tad guilty over that since DYK continues to drift farther away. Seeing how you and your article was treated was just jaw dropping. I think this is a cause worth fighting for. DYK is an incredible project that has served Wikipedia so well for so long. As I noted on WT:DYK, Andalusia is the type of article that DYK would be downright giddy to feature not too long ago--back when what DYK cared about was featuring quality articles, not just articles that pass some (mostly "unwritten") bean counting test. I honestly wonder if you put a footnote <ref name="TBD">Reference to be filled in when/if material is ever challenged </ref> at the end of each paragraph, if anyone would have blinked an eye and just passed it because there was enough little blue numbers. DYK is becoming more and more newbie unfriendly and with the way you were treated, it seems to becoming more "encyclopedic" unfriendly too. Agne^Cheese/^Wine 06:56, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
