Mike Harding

When you moved Mike Harding (New Zealand) to Mike Harding (folk musician) I can only assume you did not notice that this title fails to clearly disambiguate him from Mike Harding, whose original career was also as a folk musician? (Ping User:Ingolfson as article creator). Qwfp (talk) 21:23, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

I looked at Mike Harding, but there was nothing in the lede about his being a folk muso, so I can only assume that that part of his career is not considered notable, and hence, anyone seeing "Mike Harding (folk musician)" would know it's not him but the Kiwi guy. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 21:37, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

I saw it and chose to pass. That was a belief among people of my parents' generation. I don't know whether it was ever true; but I suspect that, if it has any grain of truth, it would apply to men of all sexual persuasions. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 02:51, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Good point. Relations between parents and kids of both same and opposite sex can be good, bad, or somewhere in between. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 02:57, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Verily. But it needs a response based on some sort of credible professional research, not the idle thoughts and anecdata of passersby like us. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 03:01, 31 January 2020 (UTC)
Which is why I have now deleted it. It's nothing but an invitation to debate. And it's a hundred times more idiotic than his recent question of whether human blood is fattening, which evoked a discussion of whether he should be banned from the ref desks. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:10, 31 January 2020 (UTC)

If you have to add there, go ahead. I just did the basics. (Referencing to Youtube etc. was just miserable.) Should do the same for Zylis-Gara, just in case. DYK that cleaning up articles I find in Recent deaths keeps me terribly busy? There's an actor and a Holocaust survivor as well. Sir William Allen

Hello, Sir William Allen from Queensland is still alive https://honours.pmc.gov.au/honours/awards/1083307. Knighted in 1981. Last week he was noted as selling cattle from his property https://www.facebook.com/187402704638593/photos/sir-william-allen-and-family-alice-downs-station-blackall-will-offer-a-line-of-5/690137547698437/

He is not to be confused with his father, also Sir William Allen, who was knighted in 1973. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.240.252.202 (talk) 23:44, 7 March 2020 (UTC)

I think you're right. I see his wife died in 2018; she was described as his "wife", not his "widow". I'll make the corrections. Thanks -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 00:13, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

Kevan Gosper, and avoiding edit wars

I saw from the "recent changes" page that you reverted a paragraph in Kevan Gosper about his daughter being made the first Australian torchbearer for the 2000 Olympics. The original paragraph was very unprofessional, but it was sourced and, I feel, relevant. The talk page also has an edit from 2008 saying "Put in something about how his daughter got special treatment in the Sydney Olympics torch relay." I therefore rewrote it to a hopefully better standard, but since I don't have much experience editing, I thought I should notify you to avoid an edit war. My proposed paragraph below:

In May 2000, Gosper was criticized after his daughter Sophie was made the first Australian torchbearer in a late change over the previously selected Greek-Australian Yianna Souleles. At age 11, Sophie Gosper was too young by one year to carry the torch in Australia, but was invited by the Hellenic Olympic Committee to be the second carrier of the Olympic flame in Greece.[1] Gosper apologized days later due to public outrage, though he insisted he was not involved in the decision.[2]

P.S. Did I need to do this, or should I just have edited in my version without posting here?

Thanks in advance! Knuthove (talk) 00:12, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Knuthove, and thanks for the much-improved version. I'd have no problems with you making those changes.
No, you generally do not need to consult with anyone before editing an article, but there are occasions when it's sensible, judicious and wise, if our goal is to proceed as harmoniously as possible, which it is. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 00:19, 20 April 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply! I will go ahead and edit the article then, and in the future I will be more bold. Knuthove (talk) 00:37, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Mate you do understand this is an encyclopedia and not a tool for PR to use to improve ones image. This means that everyone's past, irrelevant of age, is to be included in articles. If age of ofensice is an issue, how about you go and take out Bill Clinton's affair cos its now old and irrelevant. If the individual doesn't like it, they should not have taken the action in the first place. Don't behave inappropriately and it wont end in your biography. If you don't understand this, you should take up a new hobby. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 49.183.56.103 (talk) 22:50, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Hi (seeking advice)

Hi Jack of Oz, I’ve seen some of your work (respect) and wanted to seek your advice as a third party on an issue, if you have the time. Can you let me know if you do. Kangaresearch (talk) 03:01, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

I'll help in any way I can. What's the issue? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 04:32, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
I think it may have finally calmed down, but out of the blue, I got steamrolled by an escalating dispute where for a good portion requests for discussion were ignored (despite repeated blanking of content without real explanation), and then when communication did happen, it was pretty unpleasant (last night I had trouble sleeping because of it, and was on the verge of quitting altogether). And while some of that continued today, which has caused all progress to halt over the last two and a half days, it seems this afternoon (after I contacted you) some emotional distance was obtained and it looks like the beginnings of a more constructive tone have developed. So thankfully it may have self-resolved (for a while there I didn’t think anything was going to change its ugly course) - I was going to ask if you could give a TPO to me on it.
But, since it seems I don’t seem to have to now, if you’ve got the spare time, could you take a read of Nursing Service Cross? I like the opinion of someone credible like yourself on it. I put a lot of work into it, but a reliable review by someone such as yourself may be able to offer suggestions or comments, as well as feedback. I did a lot of research on it, including tracking down all missing citations, and doing all the references (to replace the dead links) was a huge undertaking (have used the cite Itsanhonour template so the deadlinks thing shouldn’t happen again - as the template can universally update all the links in future if there is another site change). It was quite interesting to do Kangaresearch (talk) 05:29, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi JackofOz, as a respected editor I wondered if you had a few moments to contribute to a second RfC on the retention of an image of the Reverse of the Australian Antarctic Medal. It's been re-nominated for deletion by one editor at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2020 June 25, following consensus on its retention previously. As the original RfC was only comprised of 4 views, I think it might help the other editor involved if there was a wider input. It's all fairly short, so takes no more than a minute or two of reading, and you are welcome to express any opinion you think is appropriate. Thanks in advance if you can spare the time. "And he is particularly missed"

Hello,

I'm a WP-User from Germany. Just to kill some time and to relax I'm sifting through the archives of enWP. Doing that, found this little gem, which you posted some 15 years ago: "And he is particularly missed". May I ask, where this is from? I doubt, that this is some nursery rhyme, or for school uses? It sounds strangely familiar, as If I read or heard it somewhere - but I couldn't find it on the net. Anyway, I like it. Would be very nice of you, If you could tell me more! Thank you! Not at all. The Ref Desk is exactly the right place to ask such questions. Yes, your question was about edits to a particular article, and there's an argument that says all such discussions should be held on that article's talk page, but your question could easily have applied to any number of articles, so it's welcome at the Ref Desk as a general question. Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 19:10, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

Sort codes

What ho! I see you have been tidying my Waltonian efforts, for which many thanks. I am, as you may have deduced, a bit clueless on sort codes for categories. Any words of wisdom on that point will be gratefully received. Hope all is well with you, dear Jack. Tim riley talk 22:41, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Well, hello Tim.
There's a thing called DEFAULTSORT, which is is a magnificently misleading name. I say that because it's only used when the default name of the article, the exact name at the top of the page, does NOT apply. Typically, it's for titles of things that start with "A" or "The", which are ignored for sorting purposes.
To make that happen, we have to tell the system that the article is to appear in its categories as if those intrusive words appear at the end of the name rather than at the beginning. For example, "A Christmas Carol" should be sorted as if it were "Christmas Carol, A". That's where DEFAULTSORT comes in. We add:
  • {{DEFAULTSORT:Christmas Carol, A}}

immediately before the category specifications, and then everything comes out hunky-dory. The article's exact name still appears, but it's slotted into its appropriate place in the list.

Cheers. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 22:56, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
Got you, I think. Many thanks. I'll try to put the precepts into practice. Tim riley talk 23:06, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Direct, reliable sources needed for Days of the Year pages

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages now require direct reliable sources for additions. For details see the content guideline, the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide or the edit notice on any DOY page. Almost all new additions without a reliable source as a reference are now being reverted on-sight.

Please do not add new additions to these pages without direct sources as the burden to provide them is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages.

Sorry big guy. I lost my temper earlier in that Australian notice board discussion with an editor who's been constantly pushing (since 2005) on Wikipedia, that either the governor-general is HoS or the monarch isn't. I had to earlier retract a post of mine at that discussion. It's not what he's pushing, but that he's been doing it for over 15 years. Even before I came on line. Anyways, I've ranted enough. I'm capable of stepping back & letting others discuss the topic, but he can't step back. I know I can 'sometimes' get on others nerves, but he's 'bleeping' annoying. It was the impression I was getting, from some of the posts (not yours) at the Australian monarchy discussion. It was somebody saying "republic by stealth", that caused my head scratching. GoodDay (talk) 02:57, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
The indigenous recognition referendum has to come first. That's been a very long time coming, and I have to say I have no faith this government will be doing anything about it, despite all the back-slapping about appointing our first indigenous Minister for Indigenous Affairs. The Statement from the Heart was just dismissed out of hand, by Turnbull, and Morrison has also been complicit. My sense is the republican thing went off the boil after 1999, and people are happy to let it lie until the current monarch dies. After that (and that could be fairly soon given her age), who knows? -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 04:39, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
It will be interesting, to see what effect (presumably) King Charles III will have on the UK & the other commonwealth realms. GoodDay (talk) 05:13, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
