Hello, J.P.Lon, and welcome to Wikipedia!

My name is Will, a.k.a. Willscrlt, one of the many editors here at Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions, and I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links you might find helpful:

The five pillars of Wikipedia     Tutorial     How to edit a page
How to write a great article     Help pages     Manual of Style
Request "adoption" by an experienced editor     Fun stuff...

Some other hints and tips:

  • I see you have already learned how to customize your userpage; good work! If you haven't already, you might wish to tell us more about yourself in the new user log.
  • Talk pages, such as yours, which you are viewing now, are the way that Wikipedians communicate and leave messages or feedback for one another. All information placed on a talk page is publicly viewable, permanently archived, and usable by anyone for any purpose. It is a very bad idea to publish secure information or anything you wish to keep private on a talk page, or anywhere else in Wikipedia, because of the openness of the system.
  • When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username and the date.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Another option is to visit the Wikipedia Boot Camp or the Adopt-a-User center, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any questions you have.

I'm looking forward to seeing your future contributions, J.P.Lon!

I really appreciate what you did to improve the punch article. It's greatly improved now. If you haven't already done so, please consider joining the Mixed Drinks and/or Soft Drinks WikiProjects. We would love to have you as an active participant, working with the rest of us to improve other related articles. Thanks again!

2007 UK Letterbombs edit

Hi J.P.Lon, welcome to Wikipedia. I see that you have just created the article 2007 UK Letterbombs. Our naming conventions state that country names should be written in full. In the case of the UK, this is "United Kingdom". I therefore suggest moving the article to 2007 United Kingdom letter bombs. Can you agree with this? If you have any questions on how to do this, or on anything else, feel free to contact me on my user talk page. AecisBrievenbus 11:58, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Now moved to 2007 United Kingdom Letterbombs. J.P.Lon 13:38, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Ally Pally edit

I have reverted your edit of the page today, which enlarged your panoramic view from the Palace (good picture by the way!). The reason for reerting it was that the thumbnail was better in the context of the article as a) you can see the whole image in the thumbnail, and b) people on slow connections are not forced to download a relatively large image file. I think leaving the thumbnail is better, as it does not overwhelm the surrounding article - seeWikipedia:Images#Image_choice_and_placement Wikipedia:Picture_tutorial#Resizing. If you disagree, it's probably better to try and get some consensus on the talk page first before placing the large image on the page. I notice you've undone my reversion already before I could finish this note. I will undo that, not out of spite, but purely because I didn't get the chance to tell you why before. Beer category decision edit

A discussion has been opened on changes that have been made to the existing Beer category system. The changes reverse the decision made by the Project in April 2006. The changes were based on agreement by only two people, and by a discussion that took place outside the Beer Project. There may be some merit in the changes, and to prevent future conflict it is important that there is some discussion of the matter. Autopatrolled edit

Hello, this is just to let you know that I have granted you the "autopatrolled" permission. This won't affect your editing, it just automatically marks any page you create as patrolled, benefiting new page patrollers. Please remember:

  • This permission does not give you any special status or authority
  • Submission of inappropriate material may lead to its removal
  • You may wish to display the {{Autopatrolled}} top icon and/or the {{User wikipedia/autopatrolled}} userbox on your user page
  • If, for any reason, you decide you do not want the permission, let me know and I can remove it
If you have any questions about the permission, don't hesitate to ask. Otherwise, happy editing!HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 22:03, 25 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (File:Scr-Fx-Logo.png) edit

Thanks for uploading File:Scr-Fx-Logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Proposed deletion of 2008 Parma earthquake edit

The article 2008 Parma earthquake has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This PROD is some housecleaning for WP:Earthquakes. This is not a notable event and does not qualify for listing on our list articles or as a stand alone article. The early report from Reuters does indicate "minor damage", but nothing specific. That should raise some eyebrows, as I've seen respected newspapers make errors regarding injuries and damage when reporting earthquakes.

The NGDC's Global Significant Earthquake Database does not list this event. The minimum entry requirements into that list would be "Moderate damage (approximately $1 million or more), 10 or more deaths, Magnitude 7.5 or greater, Modified Mercalli Intensity X or greater, or the earthquake generated a tsunami". While these are their listed minimums, I've seen entries with less, and it's telling that this 2008 event is not listed.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Regarding your WaterBiscuit-Trio photo - were they purchased in London? edit

Hello J.P.Lon,

I feel like you might actually reply to this, that would be cool. I've been on Wikipedia for years but never started a conversation with a specific user like this. My streak may continue, it depends on whether you reply. Let's see what happens!

I have a question about this photograph of yours:

File:WaterBiscuit-Trio.jpg (2012) in Wikimedia Commons

It shows three water biscuits that are all "plain" in flavor and circular. I'm curious where you purchased the supermarket-brand biscuit and the Carr's Table Water biscuit. I'm guessing all three may have been from London, but the diameter of the Carr's biscuit seems unusual in that case. The totally plain biscuits, without even malt extract, are usually the diameter of the supermarket-brand biscuit in London, right? I just realized that Carr's is from Carlisle, though. That's farther north than Manchester, and in Manchester they might already say that is a "cracker" because it is neither savoury nor sweet, it isn't even brown from malt extract or molasses. And "but" rhymes with "bought", in Manchester, but not in London or New York.

Greetings from a portion of America where we have no "biscuits" of any kind. "American biscuits" are from south of here, and they apparently didn't make it this far north, because I haven't even tasted them. They are traditionally eaten with gravy. "English biscuits" are all over the place here, but they are either "crackers" or "cookies" depending on various factors. Or "English biscuits", if they are one of the very archetypal and classic biscuit types, such as "chocolate digestive biscuits". Upon further reflection, I wouldn't call anything a "chocolate cracker", and those are not "chocolate cookies", so I think they get whatever name is on the package.

I'm largely interested from a linguistic and trademark point of view, because "Carr's" is a trademark that has changed ownership, and object classification in language can help reveal underlying cognitive schemata about the relationships between objects, and class membership. Are stools a type of chair? Are chocolate digestive biscuits a type of cookie? Why are chocolate digestive biscuits not a type of cookie, is it because they are from England (whereas the prototypical cookie is homemade), or is it because they are already biscuits? The underlying cognitive schema for a type of item often influences whether a trademark is enforceable. If I go to the UK and trademark "New England Concord Grape Jelly", that trademark might actually be enforceable. Concord grapes are from New England. Grape jelly is from the United States. "Grape jam" could be prepared, but it is not traditional. However, if people in the UK want to call it "grape jam", that means using "Jelly" with a capital J in the name might actually make it a valid trademark in the UK. (Grape jam would be made with whole grapes, including the skins and seeds. In the US, at county fairs, the strawberries give rise to strawberry jam, and the grapes give rise to grape jelly. Raspberries give rise to both jam and jelly, and I think the jelly is far superior, because raspberry seeds are fairly large, unlike strawberry seeds. Concord grapes are in fact a very traditional grape variety for grape jelly. Grape "preserves" from the UK are jelly by US standards, but if you entered this product in a US county fair, it would lose. I don't know if American springer spaniels exist, but if they do, they would immediately lose at a UK dog show with English springer spaniels. There is a breed standard. It doesn't matter whether it's a good dog, it matters what the fur looks like.)

In short, isn't that Carr's water biscuit really large in diameter? Is that normal? Fluoborate (talk) 17:31, 3 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Pino Silvestre edit

The article Pino Silvestre has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable product. There are currently no reliable sources in the article, and searching for sources only turns up product pages, but no actual coverage. Note that "Pino Silvestre" is simply the Italian word for the Scots pine, so while a search may look like there are sources discussing it, they are actually articles on the tree. Likewise, the corresponding article on the Italian Wikipedia is on the tree, not this product.
