• But the way it's turning out the name "Irene" will most likely be retired. Something similar to this happened with the article "Hurricane Karl (2010)". It was called "Hurricane Karl" before the season was over. So why can't I do that, because somebody else did? Hurricane411 411 17:09, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Lets wait until after the storm as there is no point doing it yet as it still could dissipate and not affect the US. (not likely i know but unlike Karl but the argument being put to me is that the 1999 Irene was almost a billion dollar storm).Jason Rees (talk) 19:43, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
    • Irene looks like the next Hurricane Bob up here in New England (where I live), and the name "Bob" was retired before the 1992 season. And about the '99 Irene, that was ALMOST a billion dollar storm. Irene this year is SURE to be at least a billion dollar storm. As a matter of fact, it might be a billion dollar storm already because of what it has done in Puerto Rico, the Turks and Caicos islands, and the Bahamas.             • How do you know? There is still a chance, a small one indeed, but a chance that it will move more towards the east than expected. And if it becomes a billion dollar storm, that does not necessarily mean it will get retired. Let's wait till at least the damage total doubles the total of Irene 99 per WP:CRYSTAL. 	The New England Wikimedia General Meeting will be a large-scale meetup of all Wikimedians (and friends) from the New England area in order to discuss regional coordination and possible formalization of our community (i.e., a chapter). Come hang out with other Wikimedians, learn more about ongoing activities, and help plan for the future! Potential topics: What is a Wikimedia chapter and should we work towards one? Planning of regular Boston meetups (any other New England cities?) Planning for upcoming coordinated events (Wikipedia Love Libraries, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiknic, etc.) Outreach to universities (WikiProject Academical Village) and cultural institutions (GLAM) Wikimania DC is this summer. Adrianne Wadewitz Memorial edit-a-thons

Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows: May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library, in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library, in the Digital Scholarship Lab June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA), where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.
