Thanks

Thanks for taking on the task of coordinating the distribution of Newspapers.com accounts. I appreciate the work you're putting into it. By helping to get a valuable tool into editors' hands, you're making Wikipedia a better place. — Ammodramus (talk) 03:01, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

I received your message. I have updated my email preferences. Thank you. DoctorindyTalk 17:39, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi. Change preference per your request. Thanks. • SbmeirowTalk • 09:59, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I'll give the account back. I never created the account. I would like access, but I don't need access continuously throughout the year. I wish there was a simple automated way to get access to these types of things for a couple of days, like a library checkout system. Actually, even better, all this stuff should be available without an account, seriously, but I don't want to rant about it here. • SbmeirowTalk • 15:57, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi @Sbmeirow: Thanks for getting back to me. I agree with you about the desirability of intermittent access as needed. Maybe we'll get there some day. Did you know that the Wikipedia Library has a Resource Request section? I must confess I haven't explored it much myself, but you might find it helpful sometimes. Question about citing material from Newspapers.com

First let me thank you for access to Newspapers.com. I am impressed by what I have seen since getting my account through Wikipedia, and I look forward to using the site often.

I have read the material about citations at Wikipedia:Newspapers.com, and I have a question. Can the "via Newspapers.com" and "Open access" elements be entered through the Cite News template? I can't see anything that looks like either of those in the template, so I am guessing that they must be entered by hand. Eddie Blick (talk) 21:54, 5 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Teblick: I think you are right! I've been experimenting with the Cite News template and the closest I can come is to add "via [[Newspapers.com]]" to the Agency box in the template - but then the information doesn't display in the order shown in the example, and besides the dash is missing. So just adding the information manually looks like the way to go. All the best with the editing! HazelAB (talk) 15:16, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification. I have created a keyboard macro that lets me (after using the Cite News template), add the extra code fairly easily, with just a few keystrokes. If you use the AutoHotkey macro program, I'll be glad to share the macro with you.
Now I have another question. With my free Newspapers.com account through Wikipedia, am I allowed to post material that I find through Newspapers.com anywhere other than in Wikipedia (such as on a blog or in a Facebook group)? Eddie Blick (talk) 15:21, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi @Teblick: that is an interesting question. Do you mean snippets? I have an intuition that it's probably not okay, but I could very well be wrong, so I'm passing this on to WPL project organizers @Ocaasi: and @Astinson (WMF): for a more informed opinion. HazelAB (talk) 21:15, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
I was thinking of the same kind of clippings that are used for citations in Wikipedia, essentially individual articles from newspapers. Thanks for checking. Eddie Blick (talk) 22:26, 7 March 2015 (UTC)
Hey @Teblick: The clippings function is a standard item for all Newspapers.com users; they find that its the best way for geneology and amateur history people to share these materials with others who are interested in the topic. So linking, citing, sharing the link, is great! Its what helps them create visibility on the web and help support amateur research. As for copying an item, and reusing it a method other than their clippings tool: paragraph 4 of the terms of use, says that you can't redistribute without permission, even though some items are in the public domain (see http://www.ancestry.com/cs/legal/termsandconditions#Usage ), unless you are doing so in a fair use sense. They do have an option for embedding clippings using an iframe according to http://blog.newspapers.com/category/tips-hints-helps/. I hope that answers your question :) Astinson (WMF) (talk) 17:34, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, @Astinson (WMF): Good thing I asked! HazelAB (talk) 17:41, 9 March 2015 (UTC)
Let me add my thanks, too, @Astinson (WMF):. I have been using Newspapers.com for only a few days, but I'm impressed with the clipping function. I have already used some clippings to edit Wikipedia articles, and I have saved others for a new article that I hope to begin writing soon. After reading your response, I look forward to sharing some clippings with others who are interested in old-time radio (my favorite area). Thanks again! Eddie Blick (talk) 00:23, 10 March 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, HazelAB. I just wanted to leave a note of thanks for putting through the necessary application for me to gain access to the Newspapers.com website. It contains an absolute wealth of information, of which you can be sure I'll be taking advantage.-RHM22 (talk) 18:22, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

HI, @RHM22: you are very welcome! All the best, HazelAB (talk) 15:36, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers

Thanks. Will I receive an e-mail once it's been upgraded, or should I just check their website tomorrow/next week please?Zigzig20s (talk) 23:55, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

It should be upgraded later this week. There's no notification email as such, but I'll let you know once I've been in touch with Newspapers.com re activation. Thanks for filling out the form so promptly. HazelAB (talk) 00:34, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Thank you! Please ping me or write on my talkpage to let me know.Zigzig20s (talk) 01:32, 23 March 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. Are you able to find this please? I can't find it. I tried the title, or just "New York Times" "Concord" "Natchez", but no.Zigzig20s (talk) 05:02, 27 March 2015 (UTC)
Hi @Zigzig20s:, I don't actually have an account on Newspapers.com so can't get full access, but I think I have found the article you want. Here's what I did: There's a link to the list of available papers at the WPL's Newspapers.com page, so I clicked on that, which took me to this. At that page you can narrow your search (in the lefthand margin) by typing New York Times in the Newspaper Title box, and then choosing March 24, 1901 in the Date box. Then I typed "Concord" in the search box on the right hand side, and clicked Go. Now for some reason it seems to have dropped the NYT parameter and retrieved 25 articles, but the one you are looking for appears 2nd in the list. This is the url of the result. Does this help? HazelAB (talk) 12:34, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com

Hi. I just wanted to provide feedback on Newspapers.com. The search engine for this site ROCKS. The capability to quickly download full pages for future use a la JSTOR is also very, very helpful. This site is one of the most valuable tools imaginable for a content writer working on topics of American history or biography. Anything you can do to expand this program would be a huge net positive for Wikipedia.

I find myself needing access to the "Times Machine" function of the New York Times. Anything you can do to make that access possible for Wikipedians would be helpful. They are now paywalling even their pre-1923 material, it seems. Best regards, —Tim Davenport, Corvallis, OR // Carrite (talk) 15:26, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Carrite: thanks for the great feedback! I'm passing it on to @Astinson (WMF): and @Ocaasi (WMF): of the Wikipedia Library. There's also a Wikipedia:The_Wikipedia_Library/Journals/Requests page where you could add the "Times Machine". I don't see it already on the list. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 16:10, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
Hey @Carrite: I'm glad you are having a really positive experience with Newspapers.com! NY Times is on our high-priority pitch list and we have been working through various contacts there over the past year. It hasn't been easy getting traction but we are definitely still working on it. I don't have a timeframe on this simply because we don't have a strong enough connection to predict flow. NY Times is both busy and a little hesitant in this arena but so important that we'll keep trying. Cheers, Jake Ocaasi t | c 18:30, 2 April 2015 (UTC)
On the positive side of the equation, it doesn't seem the NY Times are paywalling the pre-1923 stuff after all... There is an extra link button to click, easy to find if one is looking for it. Carrite (talk) 19:23, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Appreciation for Newspapers.com

I have been using Newspapers.com for several weeks now, thanks to the account provided through Wikipedia. I wanted to thank you for your work with the request/grant process that made the account available. I have found much useful material since the account became available. To cite a couple of examples, Newspapers.com provided the bulk of material for the Silver Theater (radio program) that I recently posted and for significant enhancing of the existing Nancy Gates article. I have also used the site to a lesser extent in editing other articles. I appreciate your efforts in making this resource available. Eddie Blick (talk) 22:45, 5 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Teblick: you are very welcome! I'm glad Newspapers.com has been so useful. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 00:18, 6 April 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com sub

Apparently they don't have my subscription. They don't recognize my email. Help! Lfstevens (talk) 19:30, 13 April 2015 (UTC)

@Lfstevens: You're in the list of Approved Accounts but it doesn't look as though your account ever got registered last August. Have you ever been able to log in and get full access to Newspapers.com? Or were you able to at one time, but not now? HazelAB (talk) 23:22, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Thinking back, I think I failed when I originally attempted to create an account. Lfstevens (talk) 02:02, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
@Lfstevens: It looks as though your account never actually got created in August 2014. If you're still interested in getting a Newspapers.com account, let me know and I'll resend the signup email to you. This resource contains mostly local US newspapers, with coverage from the 1700s to the late 1980s. HazelAB (talk) 11:18, 15 April 2015 (UTC)
Would love an account. Thanks! Lfstevens (talk) 19:30, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

@Hurricanehink: It looks as though you should have had access, starting last August. Have you ever been able to log in and get full access to Newspapers.com? Or were you able to at one time, but not now? HazelAB (talk) 23:22, 14 April 2015 (UTC)
Never full access. I logged in, but it was only partial, so I never really used it much. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:28, 16 April 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com

Thank you for the reminder Hazel - I have just signed up. My apologies for not responding sooner - it just kept falling off the radar somehow. Gatoclass (talk) 10:29, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

BTW, I meant to ask earlier - is there an option to renew the free account when it expires in twelve months' time? Or is that an unknown at the moment? Gatoclass (talk) 10:40, 28 April 2015 (UTC)

My application to access Newspapers.com

Hello, HazelAB! I was wondering if we could communicate sometime directly regarding my application and what I feel are extraordinary circumstances surrounding it. Please contact me when you can and let me know. Thanks! - Srwalden (talk) 17:32, 2 May 2015 (UTC)

HI @Srwalden: Thanks for your application, which I am approving. While it's true that your edit count is not large, you've been editing for quite a few years and making good contributions. I'll soon be sending you a Wikipedia email with registration instructions. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 16:55, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much! I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you! God bless! Srwalden (talk) 12:22, 6 May 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com account

I still want it. It's just I don't need to use it until my access through George Mason University expires at the end of August.--Wehwalt (talk) 14:21, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Wehwalt: thanks for letting me know. New applications continue to come in, and we will probably soon reach the limit of 200 free one-year Newspapers.com accounts available through the Wikipedia Library. I can't hold your unclaimed account open until September. There seem to be three options, though. You could sign up now, and have the account for a year - until May 2016. Or I could put you on the wait list for an available account in September. Or you could withdraw your application now and reapply when you need the account. Since you've already been approved once, no doubt you would be approved again, pending availability. All the best, HazelAB (talk) 16:40, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
@Wehwalt: your one-year access to Newspapers.com was activated today. HazelAB (talk) 16:24, 1 June 2015 (UTC)
Thank you for that. I saw some interesting-looking stuff.--Wehwalt (talk) 16:44, 1 June 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com

Thanks for getting in touch. For some reason, I couldn't sign up when I first tried. I meant to get back to it, but then I forgot. It worked well today, so I set up the account. GaryColemanFan (talk) 16:09, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi @GaryColemanFan: Good, I'm glad you were able to register. In order to get full access to the Newspapers.com site you still need to fill out the Google form that was linked from a signup Wikipedia user email you should have received in December last year. If you don't still have it, or didn't receive it, let me know and I'll resend it. HazelAB (talk) 16:21, 15 May 2015 (UTC)
@GaryColemanFan: If you are still interested in activating your Newspapers.com account please follow the instructions in the Wikipedia user email that was sent to you last December, or let me know so I can resend it. If you are no longer interested, please let me know. Thanks, HazelAB (talk) 12:48, 8 June 2015 (UTC)
I think I've got it sorted out now. Thanks. GaryColemanFan (talk) 02:01, 9 June 2015 (UTC)

In reply to your message to me today, I've activated my email preference. Tmangray (talk) 22:35, 9 October 2015 (UTC)

Newspapers.com

I was authorized for a Newspapers, com subscription in February, but when I tried to access it today it wanted me to pay for a subscription. Do I need to get re-authorized? I am not able to find the email you sent me in February. Thanks

Hi @Edison: your account was activated by Newspapers.com customer support on March 2nd so you should have full access. There doesn't seem to be any problem with the site. Is this the first time you have tried to use the resource? You might need to set (or reset) your password. Sorry for my delay as well. Is it possible that my account has expired? I'll sign up for renewal if that's the case. Connormah (talk) 23:15, 26 July 2015 (UTC)
@Connormah: Your account does not expire until August 11. HazelAB (talk) 00:07, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
Still not working unfortunately. It says I have a subscription not expiring till Aug 11, yet I still get prompted to start a free trial when I try to view articles... Connormah (talk)

Yes User:HazelAB , I have an example at hand: Reference 5 in biography page Eva Neer created and edited by myself. Hope that is enough. Thanks. Neuralia (talk) 18:11, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Newspaper account

Thanks for approving my request. I followed the instructions in the sign-up email, however, my account says it is a "Free Account" and, whenever I attempt to open a search result, I receive a pop-up that says "You Need a Subscription to View this Page" and am then prompted to begin a 7-day free trial and enter my credit card information.
