Proposed deletion of Fractal space map

The article Fractal space map has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The only source is a patent, and that's also the only thing that shows up in a Google Scholar search. Without reliable sources that are independent of the subject, the subject of the article is not presumed to be sufficiently notable.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Deletion review options

Hi Gervase, The Fractal space map article was deleted according to our usual process (I gather you've seen the discussion, but here's a link for easy reference: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Fractal space map), where the consensus was that the subject was not sufficiently notable for the project. I would like to urge you against trying to recreate this article at this time. It seems likely that you have a vested financial interest in this technology, and so I hope you can understand why I believe that you have a conflict of interest in the subject that may make it difficult for you to write a neutral article about it. If you wish to remain with the project, and gain some experience with our charter and how it works in practice, then I imagine it will be easier for you to write an article consistent with our aims (or judge whether one is possible).

But, if you are determined to try at this time, then there are a couple of options for you. One is that you can request a deletion review at Wikipedia:Deletion review. However, this is likely to be a waste of time in my opinion, since my impression is that deletion review generally focuses more on whether the process was correctly followed in deleting the article, rather than on the merits of the article itself. I think the best idea would be for you to drop by someone listed at Category:Wikipedia administrators who will provide copies of deleted articles, and ask them to provide a copy of the article for you (I would do this myself, but it requires administrator powers that I lack). You'll get a copy of the article in your "userspace" (something like User:Gervasecb/Fractal space map). Then you can add more sources to your article to try to improve its notability profile.

In my opinion, the relevant policy is our notability policy, but this is probably hard for a new editor to interpret, and doubly so for someone with a vested interest in the subject. (This is one reason I'm trying to discourage you from recreating the article at this time.) I don't think additional patents are likely to improve the notability profile. Although patents are subject to a certain amount of review, as you explained to me, they are ultimately a form of self-publication. That is, having a patent about a subject doesn't mean that somebody else has noticed the subject, and it seems to me that this is a really important consideration in assessing notability. There are other issues with patents as well: they probably aren't generally reliable sources, since the kind of review they undergo, I believe, is mainly for novelty, and less for accuracy. So, that leaves coverage in other kinds of sources like the Financial Times. I guess it depends on the type and depth of coverage. (Obviously things like advertisements and mere passing mentions won't do much to improve the notability profile, but full articles about the technology would go a long way.)

I suppose I'll defer to your opinion on the level of rigor of review of patent applications, since you have more experience on these than I do. However, a germ of my concern over these as sources still remains. They are probably considered primary sources, which should generally be used sparingly as sources for encyclopedia articles. Primary sources on any novel idea, whether it be an original mathematical paper, a history paper arguing a novel conclusion, or a patent application for that matter, should have been thoroughly examined elsewhere by secondary sources for a variety of reasons: to make sure that it is error-free, that it's conclusions are generally accepted by the wider community, and so forth. Such considerations are important in the light of our policy against original research, and probably the spirit of other such guidelines that we have.

Obviously, I originally evaluated the article on a scientific basis, and the usual criteria for articles on scientific topics demand that a certain type of sources should be attainable. Unfortunately, these sources were not found in the usual places, which was why the other editors agreed with the decision to delete. But now it seems that from what you're saying, this technology is primarily notable because it has had a substantial impact on the business world. The relevant guideline instead is Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). So, if you think you can find enough independent reliable sources about the subject to meet the primary criteria, then you can assemble them. Sławomir Biały (talk) 01:35, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

If you just want the text of the article back, one option is userfication, where a copy of the deleted article would be placed in your user page space, e.g. as User:Gervasecb/Fractal space map. If that would be acceptable, please contact me and I can do it for you. However, there appears to be little chance at this time of turning it back into an actual Wikipedia article: it was deleted through the AfD process for reasons that had little to do with how you wrote the article here, and much to do with how much attention this subject has attracted in the academic world. So in order to change the situation, what you need to do first is to get significantly more outside recognition. Per WP:SOAPBOX, Wikipedia is not the way to do that: it should reflect outside attention rather than be a tool to gain it. —David Eppstein (talk) 18:18, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
