Thanks, but

I really do appreciate your attempt to stuff the ballot box, but I think I might pass even without your second non-vote. -FisherQueen (Talk) 05:01, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

My RfA

Thank you for participating in my RfA. It was successful, and I am now, may God have mercy on us all, an administrator. Look at all the new buttons! I had heard about 'protect,' 'block user,' and 'delete,' but no one told me about 'kill,' 'eject,' and 'purée.' I appreciate the trust the community has in me, and I'll try hard not to delete the main page or block Jimbo. -FisherQueen (Talk) 18:15, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ooooo! I didn't know about those buttons! Congrats again. Flyguy649talkcontribs 18:16, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Anthony Appleyard

Personal attacks against others have been removed from this section.

Hey man, I was creating/editing a legitimate page on wiki, and this Anthony Appleyard deleted it! WTF!!!!!!!! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Wroehl (talkcontribs) 20:04, July 2, 2007 (UTC)

I rather doubt the legitimancy of the page. Why not ask why it was deleted, and if unhappy, you can request a deletion review at WP:DRV. Flyguy649talkcontribs 20:07, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

We're all editors trying to make a better encyclopedia. If an article is unencyclopedic, or doesn't meet the qualifications for notability,it'll get deleted. Now be civil, and sign your posts. Flyguy649talkcontribs 20:14, 2 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

My recent RfB

Thank you so much for your participation in my recent RfB. Though it closed with 72% support (below the required 90%), I'm still quite pleased at the outpouring of support shown by a fair percentage of the community.

I'm currently tabulating and calculating all opposing and neutral arguments to help me better address the community's concerns about my abilities as a bureaucrat. If you'd like, you can follow my progress (and/or provide additional suggestions) at User:EVula/admin/RfB notes. Thanks again! EVula // talk // // 04:04, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

adminship

Say, looking at your userpage, it feels like you are at least vaguely interested in becoming an admin. Did you ever think of applying? From the little bit I've seen from you, you could be a pretty good candidate. Pascal.Tesson 06:18, 3 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not that I want to insist, but did you read the above question? I'm thinking you might have been blinded by the signpost below. Cheers, Pascal.Tesson 03:55, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much for asking, and sorry I didn't get back to you right away. I saw it earlier, but I wanted to think on it. Then I started catching up on all the latest RfAs and RfBs and got distracted. Although I used to not be interested in it, I've changed my mind. I am interested in being an admin. However, I am also writing up my PhD thesis right now (I should have finished it already!), so I'd want to wait at least a couple of weeks. Flyguy649talkcontribs 04:07, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
He he he... My oh my... I'm getting such a clear mental picture. Guy needs to write thesis. Guy is just so freakin' fed up with his thesis. Guy edits Wikipedia instead. Guy feels bad because really, he should be writing his thesis. But then again, just soooo fed up with that damn thesis. But then again, he should have finished it already.
He he he, sorry but I can't resist, brings back so much memories... Say, out of curiosity what is your thesis about? Pascal.Tesson 04:17, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
LOL. Something like that! ;) I've studied the Drosophila melanogaster homologues of two proteins involved (or ostensibly involved) in membrane/vesicular trafficking. Hopefully, the thesis is about that. Flyguy649talkcontribs 04:27, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Oh and perhaps more related to the topic: if you're in the final stages of writing your thesis, the last thing you need is the distraction of an RfA. But when you're ready, let me know: I'd have to go over your contribs a bit to be 100% comfortable but I'd like to nominate you. Pascal.Tesson 04:20, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much! I have a six week window between when my defense is set up and my defense; I hope to get to that six week window in a couple of weeks. Of course my supervisor is picking a lousy time to go on vacation, but it's not like it snuck up on me. Flyguy649talkcontribs 04:27, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Best of luck with all of that. I know how tough the last stretch can be (and now I have students going through the same nightmare...) The advantage that you have is that when you get too frustrated you can just whack a fly. :-) Pascal.Tesson 04:50, 4 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Creation of New Article

hi there, I was wondering if I can have a little advice, I'm going to do a major rewrite and addition to the Houston Fire Department article, including a history. Since I have access to some information to the deaths of all of the deaths and circumstances (cited of course), I also wonder if it would be possible to start up another article titled "Firefighter deaths in the United States" attached to a "firefighter" article, which I plan (eventually) to have an americanized view of from the main article. Considering this is going to be a major undertaking, I was hoping to be able to do the various articles without them having to be AFD'ed within minutes of their creation. Do you think those pages would be worth doing?--Hourick 01:50, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I hope I understand you right. There is a page on firefighter deaths, which currently is a redirect to firefighter. But it once had a stub-length article that was apparently a copyright violation (see here and the talk page). I'd be concerned if your new article were to be on every single firefighter who has died. I don't think that would pass the requirements. A more generic article on deaths of firefighters, perhaps even a rewrite of Firefighter deaths, might be more appropriate. That's only my opinion. You may want to goto Portal:Fire or peruse the articles in Category:Firefighting and see if there is anyone who contributes more to firefighting articles and ask them; there doesn't seem to be a Firefighting wikiproject. Another idea is to ask for opinions on Talk:Firefighter. Rather than writing from scratch, you may want to start out adding a section to the Firefighter page and later split it out to its own article. Also if you're going to write an article, it's probably better to write it in a user sandbox (e.g. User:Hourick/Sandbox2 -- you can click on the redlink and make it), and then move it to the article name when it's done. That way it won't get nominated for deletion while it's in progress, and you could also solicit opinions of others as you write. Also, if you haven't already, you should probably look at Wikipedia:Your first article, Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles, Wikipedia:The perfect article, and pages linked to therein. I hope that helps! Regards, Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:20, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, I might have been TOO clear on what i wanted to do. The "Memorial" page would be totally different and it would contain only those that had died on duty, but I think you might be right on the notability. I Will go ahead and throw it over to someone more closely associated with the Firefighters.

The "american" history of firefighter is something that I will definitely need help on. My other current project (in my sandbox) is the history of the Houston Fire Department. I do appreciate that info, though! --Hourick 00:58, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bucharest is 'Paris of the East'

One more thing: on the page Bucharest you can read it is 'Paris of the East'. That is not surprising, I grew up hearing that all the time. But using it for a neighboring country's capital, Budapest is a bit strange. In fact, most Hungarians would find that pretty offensive after the Treaty of Trianon which was a disaster to this country. Squash Racket 07:49, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, gave you answers on the discussion page for Budapest. Squash Racket 17:12, 13 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Is there any real authority on WP who can decide in these questions? A Scottish teenager decides on all questions regarding Budapest, a city of two million? The only way you can get him out of the way is an organized 'attack'? He can do whatever he wants against one person. Squash Racket 06:04, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's called consensus. If there's no consensus to add something, it's not added. I've seen three people (you, Dr. K, and myself) against the Paris of the East thing, and one for. I'd say there's not compelling argument to include the information, so why add it? Especially since "Paris of the East" seems to be such a ubiquitous nickname. It's almost notable if a city is not the Paris of the East. Flyguy649 talk contribs 20:19, 14 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry again on the bolding issue. I'm just tired of getting long answers from Reginmund so we forget about anything said earlier. Squash Racket 06:27, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

'It is my preference that we work this out on the talk page'? You mean the Budapest talk page, right? Squash Racket 07:13, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't agree with #3, but if there is a concensus, I will respect it. Please make the changes in the article. Squash Racket 14:21, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, but would you mind doing those little changes in the article yourself? It's better if not me or Reginmund do it. Squash Racket 14:29, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Surveilance video of Brazil plane Crash

I haven't heard any news media mention about the possible explosion on be airplane before it ran off the runway. The Reuters video clearly shows a fairly large flash indicative of an explosion. re: This edit at WP:RD/S

Thanks for the help on my query. Are you aware that Oetzi had some interesting anomalies -- RH- blood, no third molar, longer second toe. Interesting combination apparently found more often in the Tyrolean Alps region? Because there is speculation that the Archer was also from that region, is it a leap to wonder if Oetzi also had the odd joint in his feet, or that the Archer may have been missing the third molar? Again, thanks for the links and the help. Weaver137 18:07, 1 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

WP:RD/S thread

re: User:TripleBatteryLife's addition of this

Why are you against freedom of speech? Is it because you can't answer the question? That is censorship a violation of the bill of rights. So in other words I am not able to participate unless I agree with evolution narrow minded theories of earth only evolution? Is that what it is .. As for soapbox.. why did you not remove the others threads? I was doing nothing more then they were. Sounds like a dictatorship! Stalin used to say " If we want your opinion we'll tell you what it is! " Tell me what I have to do to be able to participate without being censored.

(copy of 3RR warning I left at the user's talk page removed)

THE REASON: there were more than 3 reverts was because someone keeps removing anything they don't happen to believe in .. (an emotional rather than objective response).

Tell me what I have to do to be able to participate (as the others do) without being censored? Censorship is a form of dictatorship (what would abe lincoln say? ) .—The preceding unsigned comment was added by TripleBatteryLife (talkcontribs) 15:16, August 2, 2007 (UTC)

Freedom of speech does not apply to Wikipedia. It is a private foundation. That said, your addition was soapboxing, although you did ask questions. Why not take out the rhetoric (or at least tone it down)? Also, the thread you're trying to add already exists up the page here. I guess you started that thread as an anonymous IP. I suggest asking your further questions at the end of that thread. As for the three reversion warning, it was to advise you that you were edit warring, which is blockable. I meant it to draw your attention to this and to hopefully get you to rephrase your query into a more acceptable format. Flyguy649 talk contribs 15:35, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Industrial plastic pipe systems

I just realised I should have used {{db-g5}} instead of the g3 I used . Should I bother or just leave it (for AfD)? Thanks, Flyguy649 talk contribs 07:00, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Was the article created while the dood was banned? If not you could probably tag it for notability or just PROD it instead. Whatever you are comfortable with. the_undertow talk 07:06, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it was created August 6, 2007 as a POV fork of another article, Plastic pressure pipe systems, which has a much longer history (Created Nov 16, 2006). The creator of Industrial plastic pipe systems was indef blocked on July 23 for abusing multiple accounts per the first checkuser above. I think it's an acceptable stub now, although some of the earlier versions weren't. It claims notability and isn't speediable. The IP seems to have heeded your warnings about spamming. RFCN

Thanks to you for doing such a bang-up job on getting that organized! It rocks, seriously. And I've talked to Vid, who let me know what to do, and I've also watched how i has been doing it. The way I understand this (and correct me if I've got it wrong) is that basically we are linking to an old revision of the page that shows the closed report, and then simply removing the report from the RFCN page (it isn't actually being pasted anywhere as an archive, correct)? Then adding the decision, and the date (Although it says the date isn't required? I see it on the page, so wondering if it gets added automatically). Anyway, I'll be happy to do them as I see them, just let me know if I bungle something! ArielGold 03:36, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hrmm, I'm using a different expanded toolbox thingie, I'm going to have to figure out which picture is "perm link" lol. But yeah that method is actually easier than the cut/paste to archive page method. Really excellently done! ArielGold 03:51, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
Doh, yeah I know that link on the left, I was thinking you meant the toolbar above the edit box, lol. Just thump me when I'm stupid, sometimes it helps! ArielGold 04:15, 18 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, that's what I planned on doing. I'm not really bothered, I don't think the editor was directing his comments at me, I wasn't the one that closed it, but the editor said it had only been up for half hour, and it was up there for three, so that's why I pointed that out. As for the "heat", I stay away from that. I respect the opinions offered, and I've said my thoughts, so I see no point in hashing it over. I think the decision was fair, so when it is closed I'll simply change the perm. link. No biggie! I do think your idea of a "time" limit/amount was a good one, and that will help in the future. ArielGold 15:16, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Guess I was wrong, looks like that editors beef was with me archiving it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Vid specifically say to archive them once they're closed? ArielGold 16:00, 19 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Greek first name query

Thanks for backing me up on the Kaya vs. Kaia query. Writing [ay] rather than [ai] when transcribing the sound of /I/ in Hebrew drives me wild. Translator colleagues have vaguely attributed this practice to Francophone influence, though I'm not convinced. I have only the barest rudimentary awareness of the Greek language, so won't deign to pronounce upon its transliterations or transcriptions into Latin alphabet. Just tryin' t' do m'job, man. -- Cheers, Deborahjay 19:22, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problem. Part of the problem is that how the word is written will affect how English readers will pronounce it. I prefer it be pronounced correctly. But there is a standard transliteration for different letters into English, which is more correct for Ancient Greek than for Modern Greek, in my humble opinion. And now for the disclaimer, I'm not a trained translator/transcriber. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 19:27, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi there - I nominated Durham University Centre of Cricketing Excellence for deletion in good faith, as to me it does seem completely non-notable. Backyardigans episode: Who Goes There?

I saw roughly half of it (they must have run a new episode early because of the holiday, because today's 'early' episode was A Giant Problem) and gave a rough synopsis here (I'm Qwerty (yeah, yeah, it's a throwaway name. Sue me.)). Technically, there's enough information there for an entry (everything but the catchphrase), but Jalopy (assuming that isn't you) doesn't sound too sure about the title. Should we wait until the episodes start showing 'officially'? —Preceding unsigned comment added by HalfShadow (talkcontribs) 16:24, September 4, 2007

I didn't catch it, but I heard all about it from the family. The episode sounded good! I think it might be an idea to wait at least until we could reference something. It won't hurt to wait a few days. But if you want to, go ahead and add it. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 16:32, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
No, I think I'll wait until they start showing; it's only another four days anyawy. They're probably going to start with Secret Spy, but right after that should be the new stuff. At worst, we just leave what's already there hidden until it shows 'officially', de-hide it and add to it. HalfShadow 17:36, 4 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

In proper "Ariel Style"

You may have noticed I did not pile on support immediately, and please do not think that this is in any way suggesting that I didn't intend to support you, as I hope you know I would. I do this with almost all RfAs, for two reasons: First, to research on my own, and second, to see if there are any issues that are brought up in the first few days, to which I could possibly respond. As you know, there have been none, and so, in the "Ariel Style", I have now added my verbose support of your impending promotion, and I fully believe that your RfA will be successful. I look forward to congratulating you on the 11th.   ArielGold 19:04, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I had just read it. Thanks very much! And I do appreciate that you took the time to look through my past. That's why I don't comment on very many RfAs, because I feel that I should take some time to evaluate the candidate. Cheers! Flyguy649 talk contribs 19:07, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ausgleich renamed

Can you please tell me how to see the links to a certain phrase? I'd like to change Ausgleich to the new official English title in the articles, but can not find the necessary links. Squash Racket 07:02, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ausgleich currently redirects to Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. Apparently this is a result of discussion at Talk:Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867#Requested move where there was overwhelming consensus to use this name. The move was done 00:34, August 16, 2007 by user:TKD. Does tha answer your question? Let me know! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 13:57, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'd like to change Ausgleich to the new name in existing articles. I just don't know how to find those articles that have the phrase Ausgleich in them.
I know there is a redirect, but it would be nicer to change those internal links to the new one. Literally: 'you can find the phrase Ausgleich in the following articles:...' Can I get a list like that? Squash Racket 16:31, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I knew I was missing something! Try the search tool using the Mediawiki option. It should find articles with the term (I found 88). When you make the changes, you may want to make a quick note in the edit summary that it's per the article name change. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 16:38, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Now that's what we are talking about! Thanks. Of course I always mention that in the edit summaries. I just got tired of finding these randomly. Squash Racket 16:53, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Some people warned that it resembles Anschluss a bit, has a real bad vibe while it was a relatively peaceful process. I'll change it in the most important articles. But I may need that tool anyway, that's why I asked. Squash Racket 17:17, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

The way I see it, arrange for the accounts to be blocked indefinitely (if not done already) and request at the same time an extension of the anon's block for sockpupetry, as well. Or, you could just wait until your RfA concludes and do it yourself ;-). Blood Red Sandman (Talk) (Contribs) 15:30, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think enough of us have the pages watchlisted that we should be able to spot any socks quickly. If any of the stuff gets reverted by this person while blocked, go immediately to AIV. I hope the person realizes that the jig is up. Flyguy649 talk contribs 15:51, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I know (I'm Qwerty there, too and created the topic on their board about the lack of synopses), but I wouldn't feel like I was doing my job if I didn't at least report what I'd seen. Pisses me right off, too. If the afternoon episode is a season one or two episode, I'm going to physically kill someone, because I'll have to get up at 6 AM to keep the episode list up to date. I don't think I did that bad for a synopsis, really, considering I only saw half of it. HalfShadow 13:56, 10 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

The 'p' usernames

Hi Flyguy! ArielGold recommended you personally as a go-to guy for some insight into the whole poop/pee username reporting debate (which I think you've been a part of at least a little). Basically, I've been told I made incorrect reports at both UAA and RFCN (see user talk pages of secretlondon and rspeer for the opposing views, and of course WT:UAA for the lengthy discussion). As a good faith contributor, it distresses me that I'm being told I'm doing the wrong thing, and I'd like to do the right thing. I have no desire to place reports incorrectly, but as Rspeer said directly that I was misusing UAA, you can imagine my hesitance at reporting User:Pooopy there: no doubt he'd say it was borderline. However RFCN said that was wrong. Any advice of any kind? Poems, songs and dances to cheer me up? I'll take whatever ya got! :P ~Eliz81(C) 22:51, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I admit I was a bit surprised to see Poopy at RFCN, but reading through everything, I see where you're coming from. And obviously you're reporting in good faith. You seem to be caught in a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. As you can see from your various conversations at WT:UAA, and Rspers' talk page, there is some variation in opinion on which usernames are allowed, which are blatant, and which need discussion. There's no argument at the blatant and acceptable ends, but the middle is somewhat variable. As you know, there's more room at RFCN for discussion. But then you run into different editors and how verbose they are. Some will give you a couple of sentences whether they think it's blatant or not. Others will give a terse opinion, which comes across as being harsh even if that's not what's meant. (It's a problem with the on-line written medium.)
My take is that while it is possible that not all Poo and Pee names are UAA types, most are disruptive and will need to be blocked at some point. I guess this is where Rspeer argues that if the account is not yet contributing, then you can go with {{usernameconcern}} or a custom note on their talk page, or RFCN. I'd say that if they are contributing, then they should go to to UAA. If you think the name may fall into the grey area, take it to RFCN.
Btw, I'm actually singing and dancing while I'm writing this! ;) Try not to feel stressed over everything. You're trying to help the project, after all! Anyway, let me know where you'd like clarification. It's late here, and I'm afraid this isn't as coherent as I'd like it to be. Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:04, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was including myself in that! ;) And it's not a bad thing. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:08, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hee hee, most of the time it is great. It is especially helpful, as you mentioned, because the medium of text is hard to "hear" intentions, so it helps with clarification. But, the downside is, sometimes people won't read "long posts", and just skip them, lol. ArielGold 04:16, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
OMG the song and dance totally worked! Awesome :) Let me tell you what is the greatest cure for wikistress... talk to your non-involved irl friends about it. It puts everything in such perspective. My friends were *dying* laughing tonight when I told them about the poop/pee debate, and were incredulous that I had even cared. And thanks for sound advice and a solid interpretation of what's going on. ~Eliz81(C) 07:55, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
And as a random aside, one weird thing about it all is that I actually got a barnstar for my reporting names to UAA, and then ended up with a warning about misuse! I'm definitely optimistic that with any disagreement on here, as long as your heart's in the right place it'll be ok in the end. ~Eliz81(C) 08:02, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Also look at the messenger. I see and understand Rspeer's point of view, but I don't always agree with it. If you look at the now closed discussion of Pee in the pool, you see that many other people advocated blocking and were surprised that it went to RFCN. Rspeer is trying to change things somewhat and discussion of things is good way to do that. You're getting caught up in that.
Another thing I'll say is that Wikipedia is a big place. If you are finding that there are too many sources of irritation in one part of it, edit somewhere else for a short time. I've found that that helps! Flyguy649 talk contribs 12:03, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay, can you clarify this: "I want to talk to a bureaucrat about an atypical usurpation. Have sunshine create a dummy username and usurp User:Sunshine, and then have User:Sunshine redirect to User:(splat) with a hatnote." I need to know what a "hatnote" is, and what a "dummy username" would be, in other words, this one user would have three usernames? I'm sorry, I'm just confused, lol. ArielGold 04:05, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Will clarify in a minute. Looking stuff up. Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:07, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
He doesnt need to create a user, he would just need to create a userpage with the redirect. i said 04:13, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't think you're allowed to create a userpage for a username that isn't yours. Although that would be the simplest solution. User:҈ would "squat" at User:Sunshine and put a redirect there. Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:16, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think you can. Almost positive for this scenario. i said 04:18, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I, do you have a link handy? I'll look in the meantime. Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:20, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

← What about allowing this user to just take the Sunshine name? Would that be a viable option? I mean, I don't see a valid reason for the user to want to keep that character as a username, they could put it on their page, in their sig, wherever, without disrupting others, so I'm a bit unclear what the user's concerns are. ArielGold 04:22, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, I guess that would be better. It would still require an usurpation, though. It may fly. Flyguy649 talk contribs 04:25, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Here. Look halfway down the page. And I the bureaucrats may not allow a usurpation for such a new user, I seriously doubt they would if he wont use it; thats the reason there is a length requirement. i said 04:29, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I hope you don't mind that I was the one who placed the report. I just figured if anyone should "get in trouble" for it, it should be me, since I was the one that i asked to help with this, and it was I who basically started this going, by asking you, and posting on the user's page after i had the long discussion. I'd rather this come down on me, than on you right now. I hope you don't feel I was out of line. ArielGold 05:03, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not at all! It was obvious after a minute or two at the talk page at RFCN that that was the best venue for it. Flyguy649 talk contribs 05:05, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just curious, how would you "grade" how that situation was handled, by myself, and all those involved? ArielGold 06:00, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I think centralizing the discussion to one talk page would have been a good idea earlier. It was fragmented which led to some duplication, which may have made things look rather like we were in a tizzy. Otherwise, the "username" was a problem and we were figuring out what to do. I think your suggestion of RFCN earlier would have been better than the waiting I suggested. I'd never seen an odd character before. Actually, thinking about it, just urging the user to consider a name-change earlier might have worked -- although probably not. Live and learn, I guess. Flyguy649 talk contribs 06:10, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Well, honestly I at first thought, send this to RFCN, but then I sat and thought about it, reviewing WP:U and I couldn't find a valid argument backed by policy, so I suggested the talk page perhaps, but didn't suggest it very strongly. I guess I don't mind fragmented discussions, because that didn't bother me, lol (it gave me something to do!) But either way, the user wasn't happy at all, if you look at the request for name change, and I honestly tried really hard to make sure nothing we said came across as being mean, or bite-y, so I feel sort of bad that the user was upset about it, and resentful of us. ~*Sigh*~ Until there is a clear delineation in the policy regarding non-language characters (specifically stating not related to any language, not just non-English characters) this will end up being the way things go, no clear policy, so it depends on the cooperation of the user in question, I guess. ArielGold 06:35, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I don't think we were bitey. It was unexpected for them. The user came here to ask a question and three hours later had a new username. As for the policy, that's why I brought it up on the olicy talk page. I don't think people ever imagined someone would want a symbol as a name. It is not a letter in any script! And I think we could have blocked it anyway - it was a problem name with no legitamate reason for being like that. Flyguy649 talk contribs 06:41, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay, well I learn something new every single day here, so I guess I can slack off for the rest of today, huh?   I'm glad that you think things went in the right direction (after the initial fragmentation) and resolved itself in a way that may not have been ideal for the user, but was the best thing to do considering the situation. Thank you again, as always, for being here for me to bend your ear! ArielGold 06:46, 12 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

IPs generally don't get blocked for long periods of time as the addresses can be re-assigned. The previous 1 month block on July 19 is rather longer than I've seen. I'm watching the IP and will block for longer if necessary. Cheers! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 13:48, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're welcome for the strong support! You're a user who we definitely needed to have as an administrator. Good luck! Acalamari 17:18, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

The ultimate April Fool's joke:

I'm an admin on this site:Project Rockstar. Basicaly I keep an eye on the kids, make sure nobody is cheating, answer help questions, etcetera. We like having fun though. A couple of Aprils ago (I think it was 2004), all the other admins and I created 'newbie' accounts just to cause a little havoc in the forums (nothing nasty, just something to keep the kids busy with). I played along for a bit and then came up with this great idea: there are random events your bands get -some are good, some are bad- and I came up with a whopper. I deleted all my bands, gave up a lot of my money and then came onto the forums with my false 'newbie' account screaming and hollering about how the game screwed me over.

Then I posted the 'event' text stating that all my bands have decided that I don't have what it takes to be a good manager and they all quit and sued me for the time I wasted on them. For a minute, I didn't think anyone was going to fall for it, but they took a look at my account, noted that I had far more money that I would have if I'd just started and that my bands were, in fact, gone.

An hour later, half the people were terrified that this was a real event and they might be next. Even now, there are people who believe the event was real. HalfShadow 19:57, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

lol!! You did this on April Fools and they fell for it? Awesome! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 20:03, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
It was a combination of perfect wording and kicking them in the paranoia; I worded it in such a way that it looked like a perfectly legitimate event. I was actually surprised it went so well. HalfShadow 20:06, 13 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

No. If you continue to recreate it, I, FlyGuy, or someone else will SALT it. It is a violation of Wikipedia policy of large. See WP:NOT. -- Anonymous DissidentTalk 12:15, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I urge you not to recreate the article, as Anonymous Dissident said. I think you should look at Wikipedia's guideles for creating your first article and policies on biographies of living people and notability requirements for biographies. Note also that autobiographies are strongly discouraged. We're trying to write a serious encyclopedia; your article wasn't serious. If you'd like that type of thing, there's always Myspace or a personal website. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 14:06, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok well be prepared to have my post deleted every day because this website is a joke and has false material all over it. Ban my account I'll just make a new one from a different IP. If I can't make a bio for myself that for the most part is true, well thats just ridiculous. So, keep checking for that profile.

A page creation question

Thank you for the thank you for supporting your RfA. It wasn't a particularly hard decision given your contribution to Wikipedia.

You said to let you know if there were questions, so here is one. Recently a page called The Daily Grind was deleted via AfD. There is a disambiguation page called Daily Grind and it would be useful to redirect "The Daily Grind" to it. The question - is it appropriate to create the redirect even though this will effectively hide the warning about recreating a deleted page and the link to the deletion discussion?

I assume it is appropriate because otherwise the page name is permanently quarantined. But its always worth asking around before acting. Any views? Euryalus 12:30, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

User:Single16+Sections

Hey Flyguy. Via the unblock-en-l mailing list I've been dealing with User:Alexis+kate who was blocked as a sockpuppet of User:Joestella, confirmed by this RFCU. After receiving another email from this person today, I noticed that you had speedied Joestella's (renamed earlier today as User talk:Single16+Sections) talk pages as CSD U1. This user has a history of disruption, which includes edit warring and sockpuppetry, as shown by the checkuser results and the history of his talk page which included a variety of warnings. The guideline How do I delete my user and user talk pages? says that we don't usually delete talk pages unless there are extraordinary circumstances. I personally don't think it is good idea to delete the talk pages in Joestella's circumstances due to the fact that he has just recently been caught using sockpuppets abusively (using socks to make multiple votes on AfDs, to avoid blocks, etc). When you deleted these pages, he had just had his account renamed and the redirect on the original account, Joestella, was deleted about four hours before you deleted the talk page. This means that the account would look like a new account to non-admins doing RC and NP patrol and they would have started from scratch with a welcome message and level one warnings. I understand that this user was editing under their real name and I don't really object to deleting his pages if he really was leaving, but if we delete the pages as requested, the account should be indefinitely blocked so he cannot come back and quietly resume editing with their past misbehaviour hidden by use of a rename and U1. Anyway, I've blocked the account and left a note in the log saying that if they want the account unblocked, their talk page should be restored because it contains a record of warnings, misbehaviour, etc, but I just wanted to point out to you that deleting talk pages really isn't done unless there are extraordinary circumstances and if we do decide to do it, the account should be blocked indefinitely as well so that people don't use a rename and U1 to discard the record of their bad behaviour. Cheers, Sarah 15:21, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for pointing it out. I meant to restore it right after deleting it because it seemed odd, but I got distracted; I have restored it now. I appreciated the links. Cheers! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 15:36, 15 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

And by the way, it's all statement of fact, if it was fiction I'd have posted it on uncyclopedia. Seriously consider who I've hurt with this article before claiming I have wronged. I hope you conclude that the article is harmless, if not, then look at the first edition of the page and tell me honestly whether it's better or worse than my copy.--ArielRaven 13:15, 16 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Okay...

Consider this sort of a "training session" for me or something, but advise me on the following names, please? One, Two and Three. Like, are any of them something you'd think to RFCN? Are any obvious but I'm just missing it? Is the first one borderline too long/confusing/etc. ? Thanks my dear! ArielGold 18:33, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, it's only my opinion, but here goes:
  1. RFCN. It's a bit borderline, FAP x5, but fairly distinctive. I'd be happier with Fap x5, though.
  2. RFCN, but I'd probably allow. He's obviously not a real-life assassin. He's bragging about his pwnage of people online. Some people would would block, I guess.
  3. UAA, its an attack name, but RFCN is ok by me. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:39, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hrmmm... Well, I don't want to spam RFCN, but I'll report the third if you're sure it won't be sent out saying "oh maybe they're talking about themselves, lol" (I've seen that happen, that's why I really wondered about that one) Or, better yet, you could put those shiny new buttons to use on the third one, lol. I am leaning towards not even RFCNing the second, I really agree that it isn't a clear issue, and that's sort of "interpreting" WP:U a bit too far. The first one... gah, I'm torn, I think it is utterly ridiculous, and the intent of making that kind of name is really not productive, he'd have to know how hard it would be to type, but it doesn't violate the length limit... so eh. I don't know. (Which is why I came here, right? You are all wise, you are all knowing, I defer to your decisions!)   ArielGold 18:46, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
No.3 is going to get the treatment right now (I had a phone call). And by the way, the shiny buttons are between the history and move tabs. Oh, I agree. No.1 is a silly name and I don't see the point of it. You can probably count on one hand the percentage of such accounts that contribute positively. Cheers! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:53, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Okay, one down, second one I think I'll ignore, and I think I'm going to choose to watch the first one for a bit, see if the editor contributes, and then go from there, what do you think of that plan? ArielGold 18:57, 17 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Question about username policy

Hi. I hope not to seem too annoying and im sorry if I am annoying you but you seem to be experienced with inappropriate usernames so could you please explain what kinds of names should be reported to WP:UAA and what kind of names should be reported to WP:RFCN. I am currently trying to develop a better understanding of wikipedia policy and your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Tbo 157(talk) (review) 20:17, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not a problem at all! UAA is for blatantly wrong names, including very long names, confusing names, ones dealing with swearing, and promotional ones. RFCN is for names that you think might be a problem, but you're not sure. There is considerable "grey are" with respect to usernames. What I think is blatant, you might think is mild. Promotional names can be hard. Just because they're the same name as a website or company doesn't mean they are associated with them. That's why it's usually a good idea to wait for contributions before dealing with theses types of names. Mind you, depending on the admin, some may block the name without waiting for contributions. And if it's the name of a well-known company, I'd probably block without contributions, too. You may want to read through the talk pages and talk archives of WP:U and WP:RFCN to get an idea of the grey area. See also the current username discussion archive at WP:RFCN. It's linked just above where you report names. Cheers, -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 20:27, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Garbage Trek

You've got a better ear for this than I do, any chance you could narrow down what type of funk it was when it shows again on Saturday? It strikes me that Funk was used way back in The Yeti, and they don't generally repeat specific music types. It's definately a type of funk; any chance on making more of a specification? It's just I've never even heard of Bhangra before, so clearly you have greater musical knowledge than I do. Granted, this is clearly a subgenre of funk, and subgenres are kind of tricky.

Blocking new users

Hello, I'm the guy you blocked earlier with a shiny new account. I've looked at the list of acceptable usernames and I concede that you have me on the very last point; however, I also feel that you could perhaps have remembered the WP:AGF policy. As a new user I was unaware of the apparently rather strict policy regarding usernames and to block me outright without any attempt to contact me and explain seemed unnecessarily harsh. Shinigami27 01:02, 22 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for that. You have to realise that we get dozens of blatant, trolling usernames like user:Weejockpoopongmcplop all the time from serial abusers. I just saw that you added it. I was away all weekend and a power failure made my VCR (yes, not TiVo for me) forget to tape the new episode. I'll have to wait until Saturday... if I remember! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 15:53, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I believe I've narrowed down the specific music type for Garbage Trek. Check that topic on this page. HalfShadow 15:55, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! I went camping. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:32, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Ohhh fun fun, one of the last chances for decent weather, I imagine. Did you have fun? Catch any fish or anything fun like that? lol. ArielGold 18:34, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Weather was great, although cold Sunday morning. No fishing (no license or equipment), just some hiking and relaxation out of the city. It wasn't too busy, either. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 18:37, 24 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Images Deleted

My apologies. I didn't realize you could tag images with G7. I will do that in the future. shoy 03:04, 27 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
