Here's some extra tips to help you get around in the 'pedia!

• If you want to play around with your new Wiki skills the Sandbox is for you.
• You can sign your name followed by a datestamp using four tildes (~). You should do this after all your posts on talk pages.
• You may want to add yourself to the new user log.
• If you ever think a page or image should be deleted, please list it at the votes for deletion page. There is also a votes for undeletion page if you want to retrieve something that you think should not have been deleted.
• If you're still entirely confused, or would like to get a better grasp of your wikipedia skills, and you have an IRC client (or don't mind getting one), check out the Bootcamp. It's not what it sounds like, but it is fun and can help you with your editing skills.
• If you're bored and want to find something to do, try the Random page button in the sidebar, or check out the Open Task message in the Community Portal.

Pine Hills and Plymouth

Thanks for all your work on Plymouth-related topics. You have certainly created a lot of Plymouth-related articles, and that is great. Just wanted to let you know that I moved your Manomet Hill and Cleft Rock articles to sub-sections in the Pine Hills articles, with the previous articles serving as redirects. I saw that the Cleft Rock article was already subject to deletion, with Manomet Hill not being far behind, due to classification as "non-notable". However, as the information adds to the Plymouth topic, I moved it. Hope you don't mind. :)

Also, what do you think about the Plymouth article going up as an FAC? I've submitted it at Peer review, and it still needs some work, but I think it's almost ready. Any comments about this would be great. Thanks, Raime 00:32, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Plymouth High Schools

Het Ed - I recently created artciles for Plymouth North High School and Plymouth South High School to remove redlinks in the Plymouth article and bring it closer to featured status. However, the Plymouth South high school article has alreday been nominated for deletion. I did not attend high school in Plymouth, and know very little about either school. But you seem to be knowledgeable about all thngs Plymouth, so if possible could you please add to both articles when you have a chance? It would be a shame to see them deleted as "non-notable", but I'm having trouble adding information. I'm guessing you probably do, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Plymouth High Schools Update

Separate articles are possible for both high schools. As long as both articles have relevant history sections, they should be "notable" enough. The South Plymouth High debate has sort-of been put on hold, and I'll revert the North Plymouth High redirect to the original article I wrote. It still needs a lot of work to become "notable", so any info you can add to that would be great. Most Massachusetts school districts do not have articles for elementary and middle schools, but many have high school articles. Plymouth, particularly with two, should not be an exception. Out of the two, Plymouth South definitely needs the most work. Actually, I think Plymouth North is safe from deletion. Plymouth South is on hold from deletion right now, but it needs more info to make it "notable". Anything you can find would be great. I've resquested a few days at AfD to work on the article, but am still having trouble finding information about the school. As a recent contributor to Deaths in 2009, you may be able to help decide on a proposed new policy. It is proposed that:

A month should be deleted from the "Deaths in [CURRENT YEAR]" page ONE WEEK after the month ends.

• Oppose.

• Oppose I think that two days after the new month has begun is adequate before collapsing the previous month. IMO there would be too much clutter on the screen for the previous month and seven days into the new month of recent deaths. If one needs to either add a name or make an edit in the previous month, then click on the blue [edit] on the previous month. I don't think that this should be such a big deal. Anna Belle Clement O'Brien

Hi Ed, Just noticed your post at my talk page. I think the editor who reverted you is just being pedantic. Of course, people don't generally die at the time of a fall (unless it is off a cliff). What generally happens with the elderly is that they break a hip or damage a vital organ, and they never recover. So of course they would not have died then if the fall did not happen. So, yes, they died from (complications of) the fall. That said, I wouldn't waste my time getting into an edit war. Maybe just let that one go? Regards, WWGB (talk) 14:58, 6 September 2009 (UTC)

Origins of North Dakota name

Thanks for starting adding origins for ND place names. However, epodunk isn't the most deniable source. I have two more reliable sources by Barnes and Wick. I may be following up on your edits for verification, as I've been adding his information as well as I make other edits to place articles. You may want to slow down on adding these en masse in case any have to be reverted. just wanted you to know in case you see me coming behind you making changes. DCmacnut<> 02:29, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

• I don't think you are wasting your time. I think that many place articles are little more tha stubs that rehash dry, statistical information. There are many editors that think smaller place names arne't notable enough for inclusion, and we need to do more to expand these articles. I think what you are doing is fantastic. But in my experience, origins of place names can be subject to interpretation, so the closer you get to an original source, the better. Epodunk is OK, but I'm thinking another source to back it up would be good. For example, they have more on not just who it is named after, but why and when.

As far as Wick and Barnes, they are books, and aren't online, unfortunately. I have copies from my local library. Barnes is public domain now, so I can post a PDF of it to send if you'd like. Wick is still under copyright, and is a more complete and corrected version of Barnes. Perhaps we can team up. I have many of the pages you edited on my watch list, and I can go through and expand the historical sections with the sources at my disposal, at least for North and South Dakotal. Thanks for the explanation; however, I think that I still miss your point. As far as I understand, An apparent heart attack (e.g. in an orbituary) should mean more or less the same as "A ('real') cause (of a 'real' death), which (judging by the commonest explanation of the 'real' symptoms) seemingly was a heart attac (but 'in reality' possibly could be something different)". As far as I understood the answer you got, the other editor also was referring to apparent "as distinct from, though not necessarily opposed to what really is", to quote the OED.

Do you mean that you would prefer only the adverbial usage:

The cause apparently was a heart attack, in lieu of The cause was an apparent heart attack?

In my limited English understanding, I absolutely prefer the first sentence, if I am presented with only these two alternatives. IMHO, the second alternative does contain a contradiction; however, not as much between "apparent" and "Heart attack" as between "cause" and "apparent heart attack".

Compare with the quotation from Gibbon provided by OED:

"His real merit, and apparent fidelity, had gained the confidence both of the prince and people."

There was 'really' something, perhaps a pattern of actions or attitudes, that conveyed an 'impression' of him possessing fidelity. However, that something was not necessarily fidelity 'in reality'. Similarly, in the orbituary: There was something, which appeared to be a heart attack and which very tangible caused the death.

I do not find "apparent heart attack" in itself to be a contradiction of terms, any more than "apparent fidelity". The contradiction instead is in the context: An apparent fidelity ('real' or not) may cause people to put confidence in someone; an apparent heart attack ('real' or not) may cause people to rush to a person's aid and to call an ambulance; since we tend to react on what we perceive. However, the cause of death either was a real heart attack, or it wasn't. If this is your criticism, I even partially agree; but, on the other hand, I accept ellipses.

Well, then I'll drop this, since that hardly could satisfy the others. As far as I understood the old discussion, they explained rather clearly that the reason for adding "apparent" in some instances was that there the reason for death was not (officially) determined (yet). In other words, they made a clear semantic difference between heart attack and apparent heart attack, in the sense that they would use the one or the other formulation in different instances, in order to convey different meanings. Hence, they could hardly be satisfied by using exactly the same wording in both cases.
