    • If you make a change which destroys content, and folks object to the change (which several have), discuss it in the talk page. Repeatedly making unilateral changes to a page, without discussing, is frowned upon.
    • When you use explainations like "reverting to last version by X"; that contains the implication that the prior version (that you eliminated) is vandalism--use of such explainations on versions which aren't obvious vandalism, is suspicious.
    • Since you are posting from an IP which is shared by multiple users; I would suggest creating yourself an account. It's free and easy to do; that way you won't be confused with the numerous other users who post from 155.84.57.253. I'm very easy to get along with :), and I'll gladly support you if you make a good argument. Something tells me (fortunately) that this law is DOA. The mainstream press seems to be laughing at it, and it's far more transparent than I thought Congress would try. OTOH, some of the would-be censors in Congress seem to use the following tactic:

1. Pass a blatantly unconstitutional law restricting free speech.
2. See it thrown out by the courts.
3. Pass a less-blatant, and less-restrictive law, claiming its a "compromise".
4. If court throws that out, go back to step 3.
5. Otherwise, mission accomplished.

It's a tactic that's worked before. Sometimes, the resulting law does manage to be sufficiently narrowly targeted that it's not too odious; but sometimes not. It will be interesting to see the reaction over then next couple of days. --EngineerScotty 19:24, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Hmmm. [2] talks about the 99W signage - apparently there's nothing south of the split with 10, and not much north of there. Several signs in that area (like [3]) also show US 26 going where it no longer goes - it's possible that ODOT screwed up when they posted the signs. Are these the only ones that show 99W? In a word, No. This one simply blind-sided me. During the night I saw the link to it that Drudge put up. My virtually immediate thought on looking at the page was to write you a heads up. Up to that point I hadn't even logged on under my user name in at least a couple of weeks.

My guess is that by itself the bill is not especially relevant since I can't see how one state can pass effective legislation regulating the entire internet. The political dimensions, on the other hand, are I think consequential. I'm supose we disagreed about the implications of the legislation that Declan McCullagh wrote about back in January. With that one, I went back over the entire history of the legislation, farther apparently than McCullagh did meaning no disrespect to him, and I think that bill when considered in the context of existing law that it changes does exactly what McCullagh suggested it does, even though most of the legislators who voted for it probably had no idea that it does that.

During recent press statements regarding NSA monitoring of communications and possible legislation that would retro-actively legalize it, Senator Jay Rockfeller (D-WVa) argued that more review of the proposed legislation is necessary, "Or else we could get into something which is very dangerous, but which does happen, and that is that the Congress passes legislation which has very bad unintended consequences." I'm thinking, and I need to check this, that Rockfeller co-sponsored the other legislation.

The thrust of my thinking on this is that each of these things are elements, some of law, some of manufactured political consensus, and that the final edifice that is being constructed is at this point merely suspected rather than clearly seen.

I've done a lot more research into all of this as it relates to the Seigenthaler deal than is apparent right now. My thought back in December was that I would assemble what I was looking for very quickly and share it all with this community. Typically the research has continued on indefinitely. In addition, in my middle age I am more preoccupied with writing fiction. My thinking has been that I will use all of what I got to write a work of fantastic speculative fiction based upon all of it, which I would share through my user page somehow or other. But sadly it has all gotten simply out of hand. The implications touch upon issues dating back centuries.

Ah, well, eventually something may happen with that. In the meantime, I read the article on Section 230. Judging by the history of the article, I am guessing that most of it is your work, and I am thinking it is very good quality work. Marcopolo 16:20, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello Section 230 expert

Hi there. I've noticed that you're a bit of an expert on Section 230. I thought I would introduce myself, as I am writing my law school thesis on the application of 230(c)(1) to Wikipedia. Based on my research (I've read all 50-ish of the 230(c)(1) cases - took a while!), Wikipedia is probably not going to be liable for defamatory speech that appears on its pages. But, that's because of the very broad reading that courts have given 230(c)(1)'s language - a reading that isn't self-evident, particularly in light of the legislative history. My thesis is a rebuttal to those that argue for the narrowing of judicial interpretation of 230(c)(1) to fit Congressional intent. Damned thing is due in a few weeks and I still don't have a "rebuttal" part yet, heh heh, but I figure there have to be fairly good reasons out there not to impose liability on projects such as Wikipedia.

Oh, the URL for the NJ bill has changed (not sure why). The new one is: http://www.njleg.state.nj.us/2006/Bills/A1500/1327_I2.HTM. The interesting thing is that state law preemption only extends to those state laws that are "inconsistent" with 230 (47 USC 230(e)(3)). Technically, I don't think this is directly inconsistent, though I think a court might find some inconsistency at a higher level of generality.

Anyway, I plan on adding some to the 230 article, as I get around to it. I just figured it would polite to introduce myself. And if you have any thoughts on the matter - please! - I need to graduate.

One last thing - I'm looking for changes in Wikipedia policies in reaction to the Seigenthaler incident. So far I have that unregistered users can no longer create pages and the whole "Office Action" thing. As you've been around for a bit longer, I'm hoping that you might have a bit better perspective on that.

I decided that we were getting a lot of information on what spiders are dangerous on the Black Widow page so I wanted to break that out. I started an article on Dangerous_spiders and before I could even get the formatting straight somebody had fixed a first-order deletion notice on it claiming that the assertion that some spiders are dangerous is "subjective." My whole point was to have a central place where we could assemble the LD-50s and deaths per thousand incidents statistics. (I was quite surprised to see that the widow spiders actually kill more people world wide than the spiders with more problematical venom. I guess that is like more people getting killed with .45 calibre pistol fire than are killed by larger bore elephant guns.) Anyway, if you have time please take a look at the article. I have tried to assemble some of the stats but right now things are a bit murky, e.g., one site seems to have totally lost a decimal point -- either that or the spider's venom volume is bigger than its head. But the general conclusions seem pretty consistent and useful. It doesn't really matter for ranking whether one study measures venom volumes one way and another study does something else so their numbers don't match -- as long as proportionally about the same.

Thanks for the suggestions. I agree about the tarantulas, too. http://www.bighairyspiders.com/bites.shtml has some reports of bites whose consequences go beyond what I would call merely painful or distressing. Poecilotheria regalis (Indian ornamental) spider bites can produce really alarming consequences. Todd Gearheart is one of the tarantula dealers who seems to have a real love for and interest in tarantulas, and he is very careful to indicate which spiders are aggressive and which spiders have medically significant venom. I bought a huntsman spider from him because I wanted to understand why I once had my pencil attacked by one in a manner that seemed definitely aggressive (although probably it was really prey error), and he was emphatic about the need to avoid bites. Even in the case of the Australian and Brazilian problem biters, descriptions of bites generally indicate that the spiders are giving "Keep away!" signals before they bite. Many of the tarantula bites that I've read about seem to occur when the spiders are surprised in or near their shelters. Even so, they are not gentle and inoffensive creatures like my Avicularia metallica. (In near darkness I once pushed her from the wrong end and wondered why she would not move.)

I suspect that there are medically significant venoms out there that we may never learn about simply because the spiders are not inclined to bite and generally manage to escape contact. I'm not sure what to do about the S. Asian spiders with significant venom. There is one spider in Taiwan that has a very bad reputation, but not many bites have been medically evaluated.

The LD-50 information is not very relevant without knowledge of the amount of venom available to the spider, and even then some species are believed not to hold back where others may generally give dry bites. What would be the most useful information is the number of deaths per 1000 bites, but there don't seem to be good statistics in most cases. I'v got to find a good example of a multi-row, multi-column table and start collecting the evaluations of various kinds that are available.

Some of the information that is available on the WWW is really wild. A while back there was a spate of evaluations of bites by Phidippus johnsoni jumping spiders. A dermatological magazine identified them as the biggest problem biters in all of California. I can't put my observations on Wikipedia, but I bought one and have handled it many times without seeing any indication that it might go out of its way to bite people. On the other hand it's a very heavy-bodied spider so it moves very slowly for a jumping spider and could easily be caught by kids or even adults who get attracted by its attractive coloration. I've gotten deserved defensive bites from much smaller Phidippus specimens and it's not fun, so I can imagine that a quadruple dose of similar venom probably would create a lasting impression. It may be that a fair number of people get bitten by these spiders, but the statistics probably wouldn't give an indication of whose fault it was.

Back again. I've worked out a table of reported stats on the main problem biters. Please have a look at the table I have created for Spiders having medically significant venom as there are some strange consequences to some of the figures I've found. In particular, the Atrax spiders are said to have 140 mg. of venom. I suspect that it must be 14, which would still give them enough venom to kill a large man. Given the fact that the LD-50s reported are mostly for mice, the results cannot be very well applied to humans with any reliability. Nevertheless they seem to hang together fairly well with what is known about bites anecdotally. I need to standardize some units, convert from nanograms, etc., but as long as I do that simple math correctly that part should be easy. I'd like to know how much an Atrax spider weighs. If I could remember how many bees/pound there are I guess I could estimate it fairly well.

I agree with the critic of the spider page that the Phidippus johnsoni probably doesn't need to be discussed there, but maybe we need a place for "spider myths". There is already a good website by that name. If what I have been playing with is indeed a P. johnsoni, then their reputation is entirely undeserved. I've manipulated her up onto my hand in a way that surely let her know that something was coming after her, and she hasn't even made a threat display yet. P0M 01:53, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

The problem appears to be that I do not understand what "dry weight" means. The same medical article gave a much more reasonable amount of venom when reporting amounts harvested and amounts obtained by dissection--about 1/20 of the other figure. P0M 03:36, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Criticism of Wikipedia

Thank you for your message on my talk page. I was aware of that. However a blog or web forum of disgruntled users would hardly qualify as a reputable publication per WP:V. So on that basis wikipedia review (sic) could still be excluded. An article interviewing Lir, Blu Aardvark (Jeffrey Latham), or Selina would be a more suitable source. Chinese

Yes, I do edit on the Chinese Wikipedia sometimes. Right now I'm in afterburn condition, having just finished final exams and grade posting. I have one more little problem to deal with and then I'll be free of anything immediately pressing and may be able to do more on C.W. I've one other pressing task at the moment -- getting everything on my Mac backed up onto CD-ROMs. My old Mac is finally showing its ago, and I may have to get a new one. Meanwhile, I want to be sure that everything is properly lined up.

Cantonese is a neat language, I suspect. I know a little Taiwanese, which is more remote from Mandarin than is Cantonese. Between the two of them I can occasionally make out a word or two of Cantonese. Learning any of these languages is an enormous task. I remember taking a summer intensive in French and being able to read in that language about as well as I could read Chinese after four years in Taiwan. The summer project for me is to try one more time to work out the perfect curriculum and textbook. I've got character teaching down to a pretty reasonable process. The current crop of textbooks doesn't work well for spoken Chinese because they flood students with more vocabulary than they can possibly absorb.

Are you anywhere near Bend? When I was soldering the sockets for my first Big Board computer I subscribed to a magazine published there, Microcornucopia, that had some of the best technical writing I've ever seen. About the time Xerox bought the Big Board circuit to use in the new Xerox 820 the editor/published finally burned out. What he did afterwards I know not.

I think the first article you mentioned is o.k. (I made a couple of minor edits to fix "number" of noun and related verb.) But the article on Ornithoctoninae has a problem that I would guess must come from sticking too close to the German text. I think the real point is not that the surface of the ground in of secondary importance (or however it was worded), but that in constructing a place for these spiders to live the main thing that needs to be considered is enough depth for their burrows (and maybe some encouragement that they dig next to the glass so that you can still see them). That means that the space "topside" is not very important, and doesn't have to be very tall, because the spiders do not spend much time wandering outside their burrows and even less are they inclined to crawl upwards. (I had a Grammastola rosea for years, and she actually was quite motivated to get out of her cage and go places. I had a tunnel made from her terrarium to a screened in window casement, and she liked to go climbing. But I suppose these spiders are not so adventuresome.) It probably wouldn't help me to have the German text. What might help you would be to diagram whatever they think the desirable terrarium plan is, put the German text aside, and then describe the terrarium setup from scratch. (I seem to remember an "x" with another "x" above it. I suspect that it should be an "x" with a "y" above it.) I'm starting to get sleepy, so I hope this part makes sense.

About the several articles -- I think many Wikipedia articles go astray because they don't have a planned context. That's natural because so many of them are written ad hoc. One contentious article is "Race and Intelligence." There needs to be a more general article on "Factors that influence phenotypic intelligence." Since there is no such article there has been lots of hot air wasted arguing whether, e.g., the article should not really be about "Nutrition and Intelligence." I think that the Ornithoctoninae article should ideally discuss what characteristics make it "a natural" to group these spiders together. (I assume that nobody has really worked out the genetics yet.) I'm not sure where H. lividum comes from, but I gather it is not anywhere near S.E. Asia or China. So ideally it would appear as a mention in the general article along with the dozen or so other Haplopelma species. Then the spiders in adjacent areas should go in separate articles. I am thinking this solution would be especially appropriate in this case since it seems to be unclear whether some of these spiders belong to different species or just to different sub-species. Even if they actually have diverged enough genetically that they can't inter-breed, the likelihood is that the ones that are closest together have branched relatively recently in the past, and it is also possible that there are similar pockets of other Haplopelma species in the Middle East or wherever.

After reading your message before last I got feeling a little guilty and decided to grade my late-blooming student's paper. (Somehow he managed to submit it 15 minutes after I was required to e-mail my grades to the registrar.) I needn't have worried. What was requested was a 5-7 page analysis, but what was received was short enought that it might have been written in the quarter of an hour after the deadline expired. Go figure.

I think many of the computer people involved with Microcornucopia were possibly graduates of or teachers at a college or university in Bend. Communicating via the magazine was slower than doing things on Wikipedia, but it was a similar group of well-meaning and enthusiastic people. It is amazing what one could get done with 64k of RAM and a couple of 8" floppy drives.

I just remembered something. The article you translated said that they make a threat display and then when that fails they hit with their fangs, and if that doesn't work then they bite? I haven't played with this genus, but my guess based on the behavior of other tarantulas is that they will first make a threat display, second strike with their front legs (coming down out of threat display mode), and then bite. Even if I am nudging the tarantula with a pencil or a chopstick and it strikes like that I still jump a mile. It's quite an effective scare tactic. But I don't understand how the spider could jab out at you somehow with its fangs. My experience is that when a spider actually attacks it is fast like an arrow being shot from a bow -- and is not something that the spider could fake or stop in the middle. And if the spider hits you with its fangs at any speed there would likely be some penetration. In short it sounds like somebody got slapped with the front legs of one of these spiders and was so shocked by the experience that s/he never wanted to try it again to try to understand what really happened. The only possible way I can think of that it might work would be if the spider extended its fangs as part of its threat display and then jumped at you. That would still be analogous to somebody holding a knife with his arm fully extended and then jumping right at me. If there was any contact at all I would get cut. And another thing, if the spider approached the attacker close enough to prod with its fangs and yet didn't actually bite then it would open itself to a counter attack. That's different from slapping down with the front legs, which are pretty far out in front of the spider. To do that would be comparable to a boxer extending an arm to the maximum and giving a warning jab. New Carissa

I think it's a solid article right now. I am pretty sure we would need to do some cleanup of the references and links to conform to WP:CITE, and I am sure there are many other things we need to do make the article comply with WP:MOS in general, but the great part is that there are plenty of free images and data from the NOAA, Coast Guard, etc. which I think really add to the article, not to mention a large amount of research available on the web since it was a relatively recent event.
Let's keep working on it. I think it still needs more content, as some of the sections are relatively brief. Once it is fleshed out we can nominate it for a WP:Peer review which is a step toward WP:GOOD or featured status, which would be great! -Big Smooth 20:00, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

spider reorganization

Hi, Scotty,

For right now I'm just trying to figure out a way to clear up a very messy feature of the current spider article--we have two sections (that come immediately after my new link) that repeat the stuff about bites. I have also noticed that we have articles about genera that do not appear in the taxonomy box. So we need to do two or three things for the encyclopedia readers (besides the reproduction stuff, etc.):

• Show and explain the main categories of spiders.
• Show people how they can find information about the spiders they have found and are interested in. For instance, somebody has found a Steotoda and doesn't know what it is. We have an article on that genus, but the person currently has no easy way of finding the information short of reading through all of the linked articles that look like they may be relevant.
• Give people the information that most people who write in to the talk page want to know: Is the critter in my entryway dangerous to my kids?

I just did one level below the "Identifying spiders" article by sketching out the Theriidae. That page will remain mostly images by means of which readers may spot the kind of spider they want an article on, and I will add links as the next part of my editing.

I'll see how things look after I get a bit more done. I think I can consolidate those two sections and make things both shorter and clearer. To me, the new article is essentially an indexing device to improve the way spin-off articles are found from our main article.

By the way, if we are going to mention that Steotoda give nasty bites, we need to bring in some of the tarantulas and a couple of other spiders that are regarded as heavy biters. The trouble is getting any quantitative idea of how bad the bites are. Listening to people bellyaching about being bitten by Phidippus johnsoni you would think they nearly died, and then when they actually describe the symptoms and how many hours their hands hurt you realize there is nothing much to it. On the other hand, on one of the tarantula sites they have a report on one tarantula bite that kept the guy in a sorry state for days. I would have gone to the emergency room in the hospital myself, but he just suffered through it.

Don't forget if you talking with others about the category that you put a : in front of Category, otherwise the page gets the category designation, and could distorts the meaning of your text a little like in the case of User_talk:KimvdLinde#User:EngineerScoty where "two other imposters in the past" got turned into "two other in the past". Thanks for the input. Yes, it is indeed a real class of proteins. I do not know the exact history of the name, however I do know that there are many proteins that have unusual and unbelievable names. In facter there is a 'daughters against decapentaplegic' class of proteins. I put an expanation in the talk page after realizing that many people believed that it is not a real protein. I did suggest that people click on the links to OMIM, Pubmed and ENTREZ etc. which are official government sites that log proteins. There are many proteins that I'mnm adding. If I can find the exact reasoning behind the nomenclature I will add a trivia or nomenclature section directly to the article. Content dispute on F-14 Tomcat

It appears we have decided to leave the F-14 page and its talk page untouched to cool off(well, I agreed to, and Wiarthurhu has seemed to leave it alone), on the advice of another wikipedian. However, he has branched out to insert the material in dispute into other articles, General Dynamics F-111[7] and Robert McNamara[8], almost verbatim. Having used the article content RFC process before, I find it highly ineffective. Informal RfC's have been posted on Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history and Wikipedia:WikiProject_Aircraft with the aim of drawing in interested and qualified editors, two of whom have weighed in (one of whom suggested we both take a break from the F-14 article and talk page). I have also posted

• Wikipedia:Wikiquette_alerts#28_June_2006 A wikiquette alert, with another editor who was previously involved in a conflict with him.
• Wikipedia:Village_pump_(assistance)#Advice_on_unencyclopedic_edits.a general notice about the quality of his edits on the village pump

"User:The PIPE" here...I have been an antique aviation buff just about all my life, and the entry at Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cole_Palen is about someone who was every BIT as valuable to the preservation of antique aircraft, and their authentic replication and actual operation in flight, as the person mentioned at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F._Nelson_Blount was to the preservation and actual operation of antique railroad equipment...both these individuals placed a very high value on giving visitors to their collections the chance to SEE vintage transportation technology in operation, very much as they were used, as when they were first created.

The Smithsonian Institution regularly contacted Cole Palen over the years of his life, about hard-to-find practical information about pre-World War II aviation and its technology, to fill in gaps they themselves had in their information trust about those rearly years of aviation, at the National Air & Space Museum. This piece of imformation came from the Smithsonian book, now out-of-print, on the Albatros D Va fighter plane of WW I Germany, which the Smithsonian has an original one of in their collection...and which Old Rhinebeck has a flyable, fully authentic, full scale reproduction of in theirs.

The Florida based aviation museum with its website at http://www.fantasyofflight.com/ , and mentioned briefly at Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantasy_of_Flight , was created by Kermit Weeks, who, as a child, was a visitor at Cole Palen's Old Rhinebeck museum and was inspired to have a flyable aviation collection of his own as an adult, as stated by Kermit himself in a television interview a few years ago.

I also MET Cole Palen in person many times in my many visits to Old Rhinebeck since 1972, which occurred both before Cole's own passing and afterwards, and was always impressed by his willingness to help others interested in aviaiton history, and after his passing (before his widow Rita passed, I think in 2003 and NOT 2002 as the Wikipedia article indicated) with the volunteers such as Ken Cassens and Bill and Dave King, who had directly worked with Cole.

Even the sound designer for the first of the Star Wars movies, mentioned at Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ben_Burtt , has connections in their own youth with Cole Palen...as mentioned in a message from someone to me about Mr. Burtt's beginnings in filmmaking when he was an adolescent:

"Cole encouraged a group of college students who were making a WWI swashbucker to film some ground sequences at the Aerodrome. The film, which was premiered in the Red Hook [NY] theater, won first prize at a national competition and one of the kids, Ben Burtt, got a job wth George Lucas. He did the sound design for all the Star Wars movies, edited the last one as well, and directed some of the "Young Indiana Jones" TV shows! Not bad for a guy who started his career [Cole Palen] eating his lunch in the cockpit of an old SPAD in a hangar at Roosevelt Field."

Just "as an aside", briefly, a management team that seems to have NO idea how to properly operate a museum of operational antique transportation artifacts such as Old Rhinebeck has been in charge of Mr. Palen's facility since the passing of his widow, with the resulting deterioration of the facility chronicled at an Internet forum thread at http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13739. of which I've been a contributor, more than a fair number of times. This forum "thread" is now up over 270 pages in length, and shows (for the most part) the frustration that people like yours truly, and others (one or two of whom have gotten amicably to know me as well) who support Cole's museum, want to see a BETTER fate than what could happen with such uninformed and sadly stubborn people, operating a museum that SHOULD be operating as closely as possible to how it did when Cole was still alive.

I'm just VERY concerned that Cole Palen gets the TRUE type of category placement here at Wikipedia that people like himself, F. Nelson Blount, and others (like Bradford Washburn, the person who gave the world the "modern" style of science museum, pioneered by the Boston Museum of Science) who have started different, unique, and unusual museums and institutions for people who have wanted to personally experience things they might never get to see or sense otherwise, outside of their own life experiences, and daily experiences.

Perhaps a new category such as "pioneer historians". "preservationists", or SOMETHING like that can be agreed to and established here at Wikipedia...I just want to have Cole Palen represented PROPERLY here a Wikipedia, as I may, in fact, write a Wikipedia article someday about Cole if this current entry about him that I've referred to IS removed because of it "not fitting properly" into a previously established category.

Here's what I got from that article:

17785 envenomations in three years

7470 Phoneutria spider bites recorded 0.5% of wandering spider bites are medically significant = 37 in three years or around 12/year.

2000/year Loxosceles bites, so that would be 6000/3years, somewhat fewer than Phoneutria. The article does not say how many of them were medically significant.

No numbers are given for Latrodectus bites, but the math is as follows: 17785-7470-6000= 4315, or around 1438/year. The text says that Phoneutria, Loxosceles, and Latrodectus are the main ones involved in bites that get reported, so it is possible that some bites are actually from Lycosidae or yet other genera.

The article calls Loxosceles bites “one of the most serious forms of envenomation” (or something like that), not the most serious form. The reason Loxosceles bites seem to get this degree of attention despite no deaths (apparently) being reported is probably that if one doesn’t die from a Phoneutria spider bite then there is a total recovery, whereas a non-fatal Loxosceles bite can still involve substantial long-term tissue damage and even systemic problems. If the Latrodectus venom is indeed less toxic than that of L. mactans, then probably deaths could occur only in the case of case of children. But, fortunately, Brazilian parents seem to be protecting their children well.

spider section -> WikiProject?

hi,

as you've already noticed, i have created a taxonomic backbone for the spider section in the last two weeks. i think that i have now most articles on spider taxa normalized into this structure. I was wondering if you would participate in a WikiProject Spiders; this could have the effect of giving new contributors an insight of the structure of the spider section, and how best to coordinate contributions. For example, certain conventions could be explained on a central project page, and some TODO's presented:

• try to link to a species list from a genus page taxobox; reason: the species lists will be updated in synchrony with platnick's spider catalog. so if you want to see if something changed, you can click this link (diversity).
• pages on arachnologists
• picture collection/liberation efforts; some people are willing to license their pictures under a free license when asked. this could be coordinated.
• interaction with other sites on the web; eg. the maintainer of the nearctic spider database showed interest in this.
• hot spots: where work is needed most
• other small stuff: always italicize genera + species names, how to categorize pages
• etc.

My impression was that the spider section was a bit moribund until recently, with only very few people contributing. I'm not sure why that is, the butterfly section seems to be quite organized. so i guess spider enthusiasts just have not yet realized the possibilities of a spider section in wiki. so if those would stumble upon this section more often while googling for example, this could lead to more contributors. there are some guys in the german wiki that work on spiders (about four), and i guess these two wikis could be coordinated too. i translated several german spider pages into the en.wp, and one german wikipedian has shown interest in using the species lists in the german wp. so, tell me if you are interested, or if you think it would make sense at all to create a project for this.

Hi, I don't think we've formally talked before, but we're both on Wikiproject Oregon. I see you've added several new unincorporated communitiy articles. Yay! How do I know this? No More

I will no longer be vandalizing Wikipedia or its userpages. I have being doing so for months, mostly because seeing my vandalism or that of others was funny as hell ("User X got swallowed by a Wale" is hilarious, come on) and to punish admins who I felt . My non constructive edits were done out of boredom, especially those containing racial slurs. (I am not racist, in fact I am racially mixed myself)

I started editing on Wikipedia (specifically the U of L page) mainly out of a 'cold war' that developed betw myself & U of L's marketing director, which escalated after I was featured in the Herald Leader critising his marketing of U of L [10]. I wanted to show President Ramsey how to market the "New U of L" and Wikipedia was my penpad to this end.

My vandalism started after a edit conflict over the Courier Journal's sports and editorial coverage, where my (what I felt were) legitment edits on the page for C-J critism were removed and I was blasted. After another C-J my account was blocked. [11]

Prior to this I had many good edits on KY related pages, which I am proud of. I feel that my work here is now complete and I will only edit in exiting new facts I find out or breaking news. New Carissa update

I saw a news story on channel 6 last night regarding some new developments in the stern removal plans, so I researched a bit and expanded the "future plans" section. I think I included all the relevant points from the article I cited. Take a look at the flow and organization when you get a chance. Also, I noticed the picture of the stern we've got in the article is not a very good one (it's pretty blurry); have you seen any better free-use images out there? spider citations

Everything you wrote is fine with me. If I were working from an on-campus location then some of the for-pay resources might be open to me. Some of the anecdotal reports on Poecilotheria bites make them seem really dangerous, but I wonder how often these people actually make it into the medical literature. Some on-line sites that sell tarantulas don't distinguish between the most docile trantulas and the ones that lurk behind something and bite the keeper when s/he reaches in to change a water container, but the sites that do all seem to regard this genus as having venom that is well beyond the ordinary. Some of them are particularly visually appealing so I would imagine that an unknowing person might buy one on-line or in a pet store without knowing that they should not be handled. There ought to be some responsible way to alert readers in such cases even if we haven't found an M.D. who has published on the subject somewhere. Back to work in the real world. Let me ask you something, Engineer Scotty. What brought your attention to the "Tendentious 'guideline'" ? I don't yet actually understand what is being addressed because while you have provided links to individual whom might have been handled a little bit more quickly by a slightly different approach, or a slightly differently worded present guideline, I don't understand exactly what is being attempted here. I am convinced that "tendentions" isn't the right word to use. We must confine ourselves to the english language and to words whose definitions, when looked up in common dictionarys, have meaning to their content. We simply can not develop a special language which is used as policy and guideline. It would separate us from our editor base, from our read base and from the goal of Wikipedia. We can of course, amongst editors, use any language that communicates. I live down the coast from you. You didn't start the tendentious project. Mangoe won't say why he / she started the project. I have told everyone that the word is being misused. No one is willing to understand the potential for a clique of Wikipedians to develop a special use language. Your response to me mentions NPOV (narrow meaning of NPOV). While that is true, there is no single english word used within it that can not be found in a common dictionary, and thence, the policy understood. The word you want at the project is "disruptive" because tendenacity, by itself, is not an offence. "Tendentious" to "disruptive"

My initial reaction was simply to what looked like user:Terryeo and (perhaps) a group of co-conspirators riding in and co-opting the article; it seemed to me that such a difficult to reverse change needed some consensus.

Other than that, I continue to look at this from the "expert retention/rebellion" perspective, and it seems to me that we've retreated to a position which the real experts are going to look at and say "well, you're promising to put us through what we've been complaining about up to now, so what is the improvement?" If indeed, they are still even looking. RIght now I get the sense that they may have already thrown in the towel.

It also seems to me that in the shift from "tendentious" to "disruptive" we've blown the mission element again. They have changed this from a policy on content to a policy on behavior, which means that it can be turned against those who disrupt Wikipedia by insisting that it be correct. Possible Disruptive Editing on Scientific Revolution

I've initiated the disruptive editing process to try to bring the editing of User:Logicus on Scientific Revolution under control so we can get on with writing an encyclopedia. Since you contributed a lot to the Disruptive editing guidelines could you look at where we stand in the process so far. By my reckoning we're somewhere between phase 3 and 4, but I'd appreciate your assistance in bringing this to a speedy closure.

Baboon Spiders => Harpactirinae

Hello, this is not in any areas of my expertise, but the fact that Baboon spider redirects towards Harpactirinae seems rather strange in light of the first sentence of that article- "Harpactirinae is a subfamily of baboon spiders...". This seems to indicate that either A) "baboon spider" refers to a larger group of spiders of which Harpactirinae is just a part, or B) That Harpactirinae is one of many families of spiders that are referred to as Baboon spiders which is actually an imprecise, unscientific, and poorly defined term rather like daddy long legs or potato bug. In any case it would seem that it a instead of redirecting we should either have an entirely seperate article if "A" is the case or just a disambiguation page if "B" is closer to the truth. aneutronic fusion

You may not be aware of this, but aneutronic fusion has been studied in the laboratory for decades. The fact that it produces the bulk of its energy in charged particles is validated by thousands of experiments. To portray, as you do in your new edits, known, undisputed physics as the opinions of a minority is a gross distortion. WP:ATT/FAQ

Hello Scotty, Can you take a look at the WP:ATT/FAQ? It refers to A New York Times account of a George Bush speech is a secondary source. This is creating the false impression that all newspaper articles are secondary sources, when actually, a large amount of newspapers accounts are primary sources. Wording needs to be found to make that distinction clearer, for example: A New York Times article that analyses a George Bush speech is a secondary source. See what WP:RS had to say about newspapers: More recently, primary sources have been put online, such as the complete run of the London Times, the New York Times and other major newspapers. Some of these are proprietary and must be accessed through libraries; others such as “Making of America”, publishing of 19th century magazines, are open to the public.; See also what our own secondary sources say: An example of a secondary source would be the biographyo f a historical figure which constructed a coherent narrative out of avariety of primary source documents, such as letters, diaries,newspaper accounts, and official records.. Clearly the FAQ is misleading editors in asserting that newspaper accounts are secondary sources, and this is creating problems.

List of Oregon wineries and vineyards

Hey EngineerScotty, lately there has been an anon, ostensibly connected with a certain winery, who keeps adding blurbs about the awards the winery has won in the "notes" section. Now, the way you set up the table, I assumed that "notes" was for additional location and planting information, and I wanted to add a note to that effect, but I first I wanted to check in with you and see if that was indeed your intention. I would write the anon and tell him/her that that sort of info would be better put in an article about the winery, but that creates a COI situation, doesn't it? Any thoughts? Thanks! I went ahead and left a bunch of messages on the anons' pages, including the suggestion they write a NPOV article, and haven't heard a peep out of them since. Alas, one of the many users I've encountered who don't bother to contribute anything more that a couple weblinks. Perl posting address/ phone

Why has User:Perl and his doupal ganger account User:alexplank not been punished for posting personal information? I haven't had that address & phone since 2002, so I hope whoever lives there and/or has that phone number now isn't being harrased.

He also posted this information on his website & encouraged his members to "retaliate" One of his members also made death threats against me, but he locked the forum once I asked for access to it.

theraphosidae species list

hi scotty,

i'm currently updating the spider species list to be up to date with the current revision of the world spider catalog. these files are generated automatically, which saves me about a week or more of hard work. the thing is, i cannot update the List of Theraphosidae species this way. i therefore propose that we create a List of Theraphosidae genera, and leave the species list in its generated way? this way, we lose a handful of common names for species, but they can be found elsewhere. i'll just do that for now, leave me a message if you think this is not a good idea.

Experts and Crackpots

I saw that you apparently drafted Wikipedia:Expert Retention/Crackpot users. I'm an expert editor (Classics professor) who's not threatening to need retention but who is up against quite a crackpot user, and I wonder if you may be able to give me some advice. It concerns a user who, among other things, believes that Petrarch wrote the New Testament in the 14th century, and that he can discover "very special meanings" by doing things like counting up numbers of letters in the English translations (!) of old Latin books. (For the tip of the iceberg, see here with links.) The thing that makes it hard is that he has learned not to add original research to articles. Instead, he tries to uncover factually true numbers (that are numerologically interesting to him), coincidences, etc., and then get these into articles. Because there aren't exactly a lot of people monitoring every article on late antiquity, etc., around here, much of his work, almost all of it ill-informed and poorly expressed, sticks around. I stumbled on De Viris Illustribus (Jerome)‎ a week ago, and it's threatening to take over all of my Wikitime. At WP:EXR, it sounds like many or all of the useful remedies are more proposals than reality. Is there a best way to deal with such a user, short of my normal editorial activity (getting into it with a crackpot on the talk page has made me question the value of the talk page, though!) and trying to rope in other knowledgeable editors? I'd appreciate any brainstorm you may have, or a reference to a person (or notice board) better able to field my question. Wareh 00:55, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Neil Goldschmidt

Hi, I saw your edits to the Goldschmidt article today. I have been pretty inactive due to my low tolerance for some of the stuff that goes on here, so I'm rarely even on anymore.

I'm glad you saw the stuff on the talk page (which as you had noticed I was invovled). I believe Pete had said that the article is lacking quite a bit about Goldschmidt's various elections to different positions and that most of the article revolves around this scandle. He has a point in that it is possible for people to go overkill on one segment of something that has happened regarding a person and yet leave out other things such as how he even was elected to the various positions. Anyway, I'm glad you pulled out the category as it really represents someone convicted of the crime. While he did admit to it, unfortuantely the statue of limitations had long since passed. I don't think admitting to a crime equals a defacto conviction, which is what some have tried to argue (especially on the talk page).

Like I said, I'm never around anymore and have gotten pretty apethetic about Wikipedia given the mass amounts of conflict on it. Just thought I'd share those things with you. Davidpdx 21:18, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

An important letter

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

September WPOR Collaboration of the Week

First off, great job to all WikiProject Oregon folks for last week’s List of Oregon State Parks work. We pounded out six new state park articles: Sarah Helmick, Bald Peak, Bob Straub, Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, Tumalo, and Peter Skene Ogden. Plus numerous other edits to improve the existing articles. As a reward, we are introducing the COTW award {{WPOR COTW award}}, and this time it goes to User:Woodstein52 for starting three of the articles.

Fall WPOR COTW

Welcome to autmun and the weekly COTW news. Great job to those who helped out with last week’s articles: Darlene Hooley & Thunderegg. Both made great improvements. This week, something a little different. With fall upon us, the photo ops are going to be harder to get, so we have a photo request fulfillment drive. Take a look at the requested pictures for Oregon category or the graphics subproject for what’s needed. Then go take a picture, or search online for a free picture to upload (US gov sites are great and there are links available from the above links). Week 1 October WP:ORE COTW

I know everyone has been waiting anxiously for this week’s COTW, so here they are: Barlow Road and Columbia River Plateau. Both are almost Start class, just some formatting and referencing, plus a little expansion and they will be there!

As to last week, it is difficult to track the items we were working on, but I know some pictures were added and at least three red links were removed from Oregon, so thank you to all those who participated. The award winner will be GoodDamon for their creation of the Oregon Forest Resources Institute article. We have now worked through all the Top class stubs and are into the High class stubs. WPOR CoTW: Don Schollander & Conde McCullough

Greetings WPOR world. Last week was great with the Barlow Road seeing lots of improvement, maybe even B class. Columbia River Plateau also saw some improvement, maybe enough to bump it to Start. On with the countdown, another two Stubs in the High category, both happen to be people: Don Schollander a multi-gold medalist; and then world-renowned bridge architect and all-around swell guy Conde McCullough. Schollander needs sources more than anything, and McCullough needs more of a bio, plus maybe a nice chart for the bridges with type/year/location/length. A new class of experts....

Hi there. I found the essay you seemed to have started, but I think your definition of an expert on Wikipedia was flawed because you emphasized the academic expert over the Wikipedian. I think that if we set the first standard for being accepted as an expert on Wikipedia to being an expert at Wikipedia, we'll gain a much larger consensus out of the community. Jimbo doesn't care how we do things, so long as we follow the 5 pillars.

I would like to see a committee of seasoned editors receive nominations for expert status. Before going into the previous idea for "expert contribution" tags in articles, I'm only envisioning something like a userbox (tagging articles smacks of ownership, anyhow). When a newbie first comes to Wikipedia, they read a lot. Eventually, some newbies begin editing, perhaps small at first, perhaps they go all out and learn the ropes the embarrassing way. After a while, a newbie has read numerous policy pages, knows about admins, vandals, Willy on Wheels, and everything else. This is a person who should be called an expert Wikipedian.

Once we have thousands of general experts identified and labeled, I expect specialized experts will gain promotions in their respective fields. Although I wonder how many fields we'll recognize....

Anyway, I've tried the village pump, and Wikidemo thinks my idea has potential, and I've been talking with Hoary on Wikipedia talk:Expert editors#A new essay/proposal about moving this idea forward. Thanks for taking a look. Does my addition sound too unorganized or disjointed? It doesn't seem to have the same tone/style of other, better, essays and project pages. I wasn't thinking of giving anybody extra privileges, other than the entailments of having status symbol. I'm willing to weather hostility and suspicion, especially the knee-jerk, reactionary kind. I understand the fear of a minority gaining "power" over the majority, but in the case I'm trying to make here, the majority will have the primary power, while the minority will have derivative power. I just think we need a community operated WikiProject to handle all the power brokering.

You look like a general expert editor to me, so I'd approve you for such a status, provided they put me on the Expert Editor Review Committee. Can I be Frank? ^What? 04:02, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Holiday COTW

Sunir Shah

Hello Engineer Scotty, remember me? I wrote the History of Wikis article that you reacted favorably to, and now I need your help. I wrote an article about Sunir Shah last fall, and someone has recently deleted it, by reactivating an old deletion process from 2006. Unfortunately I failed to look at my watchlist for a few weeks when this happened, and the deletion event is too old to show up on the watchlist (can I extend the time covered somehow?). Anyhow, I'd like to contest the procedure and try to reinstate the Sunir article, but I need help from someone who has better knowledge of the rules (and of the administrators). User:Peteforsyth has seen the above and put a message on my talk page directing me to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sunir Shah. I had already found this old deletion debate from 2006, but wanted to see who did the new deletion. The participants in the debate are listed as BigHaz, the wub, Kaustuv Chaudhuri and SJK. Not knowing who to address, I sent a protest to User talk:Kaustuv, but now I see that the decision was announced by Ezeu - and the new deletion may be the work of someone else entirely. Oops, sorry- here's the newer deletion debate. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sunir Shah (2nd nomination) (FYI, the way I found these is by searching for Sunir Shah, and then when it didn't come up, I checked off "Wikipedia" and "Wikipedia talk" in the checkboxes at the bottom of the search page, and ran it again.) New Year COTW from WP:ORE

Happy New Year to all the Oregon WikiProject People. A big round of applause for everyone last year, we got a lot done. A thank you to everyone who helped with the last Collaboration of the Week, I saw a large number of articles in the unassessed section and our total number of articles is over 5000 (we were around 4000 in June when the assessment program finished the initial run) so I know at one person was busy tagging. This week we are back to a High importance Stub article the one and only max security prison, first prison, and only one with a death row in the state, the Oregon State Penitentiary. Oregon to GA COTW

Howdy to WikiProject Oregon members, time for another edition of the Collaboration of the Week. As you may have already noticed, our flagship article Oregon is up for the third time as we make a push to get WP:GA status before going for WP:FA. Since this will take some time to get where it needs to be, this will be the COTW for more than just a week. On another note, just a general good job/pat on the back to the project for a great 2007, the first full year of the project. We had 83 DYKs about Oregon, improved one article to FA, and went from around 4 GAs to 17 GAs. Plus numerous new articles, improvements to existing, the introduction of the COTW, and the introduction of article assessment at the project. Again, great job and here’s to a new year. Tom Peterson says it time for Oregon COTW

Wake up! Wake up to a happy day! Says Tom Peterson. Greetings to the gang at WP:ORE, its time for another round of Collaboration of the Week. Last week was a very successful endeavor with great improvement to Oregon Swallowtail and Deuce Biglow Canyon Wind Farm. OK, so there’s no “e” but it makes me laugh. The Biglow production was so successful we got our first DYK out of it. So, let’s try for a second with the tallest building in the state, the Wells Fargo Center. Clown COTW

Greetings once again to members of the best encyclopedia online about Oregon (aka WP:ORE)! Last week we improved Neil Goldschmidt to close to GA level, and moved the Wells Fargo Center from Stub to Start for the Collaboration of the Week. This week we’re clowning around with some bozo from Oregon, Pinto Colvig, and then in an attempt to garner another DYK, the rather stubby Cooper Spur. As we have quite a few new members over the last six months, I’ll make another pitch for our various subprojects. March 14 OR COTW

Hello again or welcome if you are new to WP:WikiProject Oregon! Last week we did a picture drive and a NRHP creation drive. It’s hard to track the picture results, but I know I saw quite a few pictures added, so great job. With NRHP we added 7 that I saw: Mitchell Recreation Area, Salem First United Methodist Church, Portland City Hall, Crater Lake Lodge, Central Library (Portland, Oregon), Watchman Lookout Station, and Alvin T. Smith House; with most now nominated for DYK’s! So great work everybody.

This week, its back to stubs with one of the largest newspapers in the state, The Register-Guard, and a request with Oregon Coast. Feel free to help with either one, and the paper article is so short a DYK should be pretty easy to get (just need 5X expansion). Vera Katz and History

Elected Oregon

Hello fellow WikiProject Oregon folks and entities. Thanks to those who helped out with improving Vera Katz and History of Oregon during the last Collaboration of the Week! As you may have noticed, we have changed the banners a bit, but not our dedication to everything Oregon! This week, in honor of the political process, we have: Current Oregon Senate members & Current Oregon House members. Hopefully by November we can have an article on every current member of the Oregon Legislature. So feel free to turn a red link blue or expand an existing article. Since it is an election year, there should be plenty of newspaper stories. Plus, the state archives has this site that allows you to go back and see when they started serving and district info, plus at a minimum show they were a state legislator from a WP:RS. Juxtaposition COTW

Howdy Ho WikiProject Oregon! Time for another installment of Collaboration of the Week. The last few weeks we’ve knocked out quite a few articles of our current state legislators, and even a few former ones too. Great job to all those who helped make it happen. On a related note, we have had several DYKs from this and now have 53 DYKs so far this year (not counting multiples), less than four full months into the year. Last year we had a total of 83 DYKs for the entire year, and 7 combined for 2006 & 2005. So we are well on our way to another record year. Each time an article makes it to the main page as a DYK it will typically get an extra 1000 hits, which is usually far more than the typical 100 hits per month most minor articles receive. News On May 5, the first round of the NBA Playoffs were completed. In the East, Boston, will face Cleveland, and Detroit will face Orlando. In the West, the Los Angeles (Lakers) will face Utah, and New Orleans will face San Antonio. For more up-to-date information, visit the 2008 NBA Playoffs. The end-of-the-year awards are now being handed out. So far, Byron Scott has been awarded the Coach of the Year award, Kevin Garnett has been named the Defensive Player of the Year, Hedo Turkoglu has won the Most Improved Player award, and Kevin Durant has been named the Rookie of the Year.	Improved Content On April 9, Dirk Nowitzki was given Good Article status. On April 19, Yi Jianlian was promoted to Good Article status. On April 29, Yao Ming was given to Featured Article status. On May 4, the List of Houston Rockets first and second round draft picks was promoted to Featured List status. Current Projects Update all the 2007-08 Playoff game logs that are located in Category:National Basketball Association game log templates As the playoffs continue, keep the 2008 NBA Playoffs article up-to-date.	Collaboration of the Month Magic Johnson has been chosen to be our very first Collaboration of the Month article. Although this is article is already a Good Article, it still can be improved. The goal is to improve this article by the end of May so that it can be nominated for Featured Article status. In particular, free-use images should be found for the article, all Manual of Style guidelines should be followed, and a neutral point of view should be maintained throughout the article. If there is anything you can do to improve the article, then please help out.

Blocked Proxy Procedure

How does an individual, who finds that a blocked proxy is being used, inform an administrator that such and such an IP address needs to be addressed? Are services such as the Loki Network Project banned from being used on wikipedia? e.g. ip number 64.251.25.150

I am aware of many individuals who are editing pages concerned with the rather controversial New Kadampa Tradition - primarily supporters - who have a strong tendancy not to register, to use glove puppets, and other things. It makes it very hard for individuals who have an interest in keeping WP free, fair, and unbiased - due to the sheer number and persistence of said individuals. An old friend of mine - and fellow editor, [[User::kt66]] recently resigned his editors hat due to the sense of unfailing pressure regarding these issues. (20040302 (talk) 12:00, 9 July 2008 (UTC))

1 Year of the Collaboration of the Week

Sicariidae

Hi EngineerScotty!

I noticed in your user page that you live in Beaverton, and also that you are interested in spiders, and the Sicariidae. Well it just so happens that one of the world's experts in Sicariidae lives and works in Portland, and I do research in her lab. I'd like to invite you and your family to our lab open house (AKA SpiderFest) on Oct. 30th (see this link for info: http://www.lclark.edu/org/spidylab/spiderfest.html). I am also interested in getting involved more in the Wikipedia community so it might be fun to talk about that. I know that most people looking up spiders are probably interested in whether or not they are dangerous, but I think it would be wonderful to shift the focus a bit from this fear of spiders and to show people how amazing they are and try to build an appreciation for them in the general public. Sicarius, for example, have an extremely fascinating natural history that most people are not aware of if they are even aware that Sicarius exist.

Wikipedia's Expert Peer Review process (or lack of such) for Science related articles

Hi - I posted the section with the same name on my talk page. Could you take part in discussion ?

User: Shotwell suggested (on my talk page) "I would endorse a WP:EXPERTADVICE page that outlined the wikipedia policies and goals for researchers in a way that enticed them to edit here in an appropriate fashion. Perhaps a well-maintained list of expert editors with institutional affiliation would facilitate this sort of highly informal review process. I don't think anyone would object to a well-maintained list of highly-qualified researchers with institutional affiliation (but then again, everyone seems to object to something)."

In my view people nominated as "expert reviewers" should be willing not to hide under the veil of anonymity. They should be able to demonstrate some level of the verifiable accomplishment / recognition in the domain of professional science . BTW, I do not see any reason why the anonymity of editors on Wikipedia is considered to be a "good thing". Above is my general opinion, so please don't take my statement personally. There is obviously a choice given for everyone in Wikipedia either to act "in open" or to hide behind meaningless assumed pseudonym and I accept this situation. BTW, I do understand current Wikipedia concept that in order to produce good Wikipedia science article, one does not need to be a professional scientist ... - that is fine with me ... You are invited! Wiki Loves Pride

You are invited to participate in Wiki Loves Pride, a global campaign to create and improve LGBT-related content at Wikipedia during the month of June, culminating with a multinational edit-a-thon on June 21. The project is being spearheaded by two organizers with roots in the Pacific Northwest. Meetups are being organized in some cities, or you can participate remotely. Wikimedia Commons will also be hosting an LGBT-related photo challenge. In Portland, there are two ways to contribute. One is a photography campaign called "Pride PDX", for pictures related to LGBT culture and history. The Wiki Loves Pride edit-a-thon will be held on Saturday, June 21 from noon–4pm at Smith Memorial Student Union, Room 236 at Portland State University. Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, Portland Oregon (March 7, 2015)

It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Women in Red World Contest

Hi. We're into the last five days of the Women in Red World Contest. There's a new bonus prize of $200 worth of books of your choice to win for creating the most new women biographies between 0:00 on the 26th and 23:59 on 30th November. If you've been contributing to the contest, thank you for your support, we've produced over 2000 articles. Cipolla's algorithm and Tonelli's algorithm are able to find square roots of powers of prime modula

I looked up Dickson's History of Numbers vol 1 p215(Tonelli) and p218(Cipolla) and Dickson clearly shows that both modular square root algorithms can handle powers of prime modula (whereas the Wiki articles say they can only do prime modula).

I've updated the TALK pages of both articles with the relevant Dickson math, along with numeric runthroughs with Mathematica code.

However, I am not a professional mathematician so I hesitate to update the articles.

Perhaps yourself, or someone else in the Computer science field could update the relevant articles with this information from Dickson.

International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, Oregon Jewish Museum, Thursday, March 7

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education, in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host the 2nd Annual International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Thursday, March 7 from 4 to 8 pm. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it. We aim to collaboratively edit/enter 18 Jewish women artists into the canon. Support will be provided by an experienced local Wikipedian who will be on site to teach and guide the process. This edit-a-thon will serve as both a public art action and a public educational program. Participants will have an opportunity to select an artist/s ahead of time or on site.

Portland Art+Feminism Edit-a-thon: March 12, 2022

You are invited! An Art+Feminism Wikipedia edit-a-thon will be held in Portland, Oregon, on March 12, 2022. Learn more here!

Wikipedia is one of the most-visited sites on the internet—and it’s created by people who volunteer their time to write and edit pages. Learn how to edit Wikipedia and be a part of shaping our understanding of our world. In this workshop, volunteer Wikipedia editors will be on hand to train participants on how to get started editing pages and offer ideas for which pages you can pitch in to help improve. Show up at any point during the four hours to get started!

Also: Free burritos!! We will be providing vegan, vegetarian, and meat burritos from food cart Loncheria Las Mayos. Alder Commons has a large, fenced playground. Children are welcome! Some computers will be available to borrow, but if you have a laptop, please bring it to use. We will also be leading an online training for new editors at 11am-12pm PST. Please feel free to join that training if you are not able to show up IRL.

The Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education (OJMCHE), in partnership with social practice artist Shoshana Gugenheim and as part of the Art+Feminism Project, will host an International Women's Day Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to edit and/or create Wikipedia articles for Jewish women artists. The event will be held at the museum on Sunday, March 10 from 11am-3pm PDT. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. Members of the public are invited to come to the museum to learn about the editing process, its history, its impact, and how to do it.
