Real name is Scott Andrew Johnson; EngineerScotty (or variants thereof) is a online nick I've used for quite a few years. I maintain an unofficial homepage on WikiWikiWeb at WikiWikiWeb:ScottJohnson. I live in Beaverton, Oregon, where I work as a software engineer, and am married with three children.

Wikipedia philosophy

I'm generally an m:Inclusionist. Other than areas where well-defined criteria are set forth (such as WP:MUSIC), or for things that have no notability whatsoever (like the fire hydrant down the street from my house), I generally don't support deletion based on notability. I've no objection to "cruft" in Wikipedia, as long as it is well-written cruft that satisfies WP:V, WP:NOR, and WP:NPOV.

I have been known to send poorly-written articles to AfD, after warnings that they are poorly written.

I believe that writing an encyclopedia is a professional endeavor; and that Wikipedia editors should exhibit high degrees of professionalism. Edit-warring, POV-pushing, name-calling, incivility, and similar have no place here. Activities which would get an editor or writer for Encyclopædia Britannica fired from his job, should not be tolerated on Wikipedia. This is not a free speech platform; this is not a forum for righting the (perceived) wrongs of society, and this is not a place to publish theories that you have made up.

I believe that this is, and should be, an encyclopedia first and a wiki second. A wiki is a medium (like a magazine or a weblog or a newspaper), and should serve as a means to a particular end. I believe that a wiki is an excellent way to write an encyclopedia, but that the end (the encyclopedia) should take precedence over the means (the wiki).

I support policies designed to improve the level of professionalism here.

Wikipedia interests

  • Transportation, particularly in my home state of Oregon.
  • The Portland Trail Blazers, and the NBA in general.
  • Various Computer Science topics.
  • For some strange reason, I have created quite a few pages on Spiders.
  • The occasional poltitical contribution.
  • Any other page that I can meaningfully improve.
  • The occasional meta-topic.

I've got a a ton of edits, and hope that some of them are useful.

Pledges and licensing

I pledge to stay out of edit wars.

I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:

Multi-licensed with the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike License versions 1.0 and 2.0
I agree to multi-license my text contributions, unless otherwise stated, under Wikipedia's copyright terms and the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike license version 1.0 and version 2.0. Please be aware that other contributors might not do the same, so if you want to use my contributions under the Creative Commons terms, please check the CC dual-license and Multi-licensing guides.

Pages I've created or significantly contributed to

A list of pages in article that I've either created (excluding stubs and redirects), or expanded from a stub/redirect into a full article. This list is likely incomplete, and is not sorted (other than into high level categories as indicated)

Feature articles

The following are feature articles I've worked significantly on; these are also listed below.

Basketball related stuff

Road geek stuff

Spider stuff

Video related stuff

Other Oregon stuff

This excludes Blazer related material (see basketball above), and roads (see road geek stuff)

Wikipedia and wiki related stuff

Computer Science topics

Miscellaneous

Obituaries

Pages I created that got swept away by the AfD broom. May they rest in peace (those reading this, please don't recreate them without good reason):

  • Pirate rock. Deleted for lack of good sources on the genre (which I agree is an issue). If better sources appear, I may move to resurrect this one from Davey Jones' locker.  :) Also, no clear criteria for membership were established.

Wikipedia Awards

A smiley

I (Paladin 18:11, 6 July 2006 (UTC)) award EngineerScotty a super smiley for all his contributions to Wikipedia and his hardwork correcting Vandalism .

Welldone !

Other stuff

  • I occasionally may have draft articles in progress. If there is something here, feel free to finish it and turn it into an article (let me know)! Or feel free to edit it. Generally, things in my draft section are things which are highly incomplete or unfinished; my usual method is to edit articles directly, so my draft section may often be empty.

Followers of Christ (Oregon church)

Hi there, I just nominated this great new article for a mention at Did You Know... You might want to take a look at the "hook" I wrote and make sure it's accurate, rephrase as you see fit. Well done! (It's here: Template talk:Did you know#Articles created/expanded on March 26 at the bottom of the section.) -Pete (talk) 22:08, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
