Hello, may I please ask a few questions?

I read your comment on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stephanie sarkis and I'd like ask a few general questions.

I've re-read the pages on deletion policy and notability guidelines. How would you suggest an editor go about handling an article like this one: Kent Stanley This is a new article written by a single author, likely autobiographical. It contains claims of notability, but no 3rd party sources. The only contributions by this author are on the article in question. Special:Contributions/HaroldKStanley

In a broad sense, how does one go about improving something like this? Do I need to gut the article and just make a stub saying something like:

Kent Stanley is the senior associate athletics director for development at Utah State.

I've been placing ID badges to the side of the ribbons for a neater appearance whenever possible. Wings and other badges go above. Need some admin help

I've made a bit of a mistake that I need an admin to help fix. I created Category:United States Marine Corps in fiction to categorize Marines n media, but then i realized that I forgot the distinction between fiction and non-fiction. In haste to fix the problem, I created Category:United States Marine Corps in non fiction. Now, I've got two categories for an almost identical purpose... And I'm also having some trouble deciding whether some media is fiction or non-fiction (some are based on but heavily adapted from real events, or semi-autobiographical, or dramatized versions of real events). I personally think it'd be better to lump them all in together. Sometimes the grey area is bigger, sometimes it is so small that you wouldn't notice without some research. Table sorting

I took a look at Help:Sorting, and made a few changes... but I can't understand how to get dates to work right. I noticed that on the CMC page... putting a zero in front of the single digits will work... 08, 09, etc. instead of 8, 9. bahamut0013^words_deeds 06:13, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

Well, I simplified it... take a look. I used <span style="display:none">05</span>... as you can see, I skipped the "O" entirely. If you are referring to cases where the individual held more than one rank, then yes, adding an additional digit would help sort that. We humans usually read an integer from the base (decimal point) and left, but the software reads it from the first digit right. This means that the number of digits is irrelevant, but the precedence of the first digist to conflict are. For example, 09 and 090 are considered the same number as far as sorting is considered, but 092 is ahead of 0934560... I think. The best solution here is probably the decimals you tried elsewhere. But in reality, I really doubt it's worth this much skull sweat! How much functionality will this give a reader anyway? We have the basic mechanics in place, and it works well. Unless, of course, you are merely trying to expand your skill set; in which case I really don't have any more advice for you. Once we start getting into computational mathematics, I lose interest because I don't have room in my head for it. bahamut0013^words_deeds 14:32, 2 March 2009 (UTC)

A little confused

I'm a little confused over the advice you left a user here. As far as I was aware, we didn't remove information simply because it is a "spoiler" or even warned readers about a potential spoiler. Even the guidelines for spoilers states that it is not acceptable to delete information simply because it is a spoiler, especially if it interferes with the article's completeness. It is only a "spoiler" by a few hours for only half the country. Do you really think it is necessary to remove information simply because one group of people haven't watched the show? If that's the case, we should probably remove all of the "spoiler" information until everyone's seen it. See? Slippery slope. Further, this isn't a work of fiction. It's a biography page. I didn't really think spoilers were possible on biography pages, so I found her suggestion and your permission a little...odd. I guess I'm just a little confused. I'd appreciate a little clarification about what is considered a spoiler and what constitutes removal of a spoiler. Thanks for any help. --13² 14:41, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

I used the ref: Who's Who in Marine Corps History... I thought that the text did conflict with the image as well. I hadn't created User:bahamut0013/ribbon workshop/incomplete at the time, but he's listed there now. If we can find any more references, then we can try to sort out which ones make more sense... but I think the Good Cookie makes sense, he was enlisted for almost five years before geting a commission. As far as the order goes, I've noticed that a loto of older photos are out of order... I think the precedence rules for non-US awards have changed since WWII. I sort them by personal awards, unit awards, and then service & campaign awards last. This is the current rule, and unless I know of a specific change in the rules (such as the Navy Distinguished Service Medal being superior to the Navy Cross many years ago) that makes sense for the time period the individual served, I default to the modern regulations. bahamut0013^words_deeds 05:06, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

The photos aren't always up to date, however... that's why I use them as a guide only, and I usually trust the prose over the photo if it makes more logical sense. If you look at the incomplete page, you'll see a few instances when what appears to be on thier chest doesn't make a lick of sense, but the prose does. It doesn't help that often these photos are monochromatic, small resolution, or both; it's easly to confuse one ribbon for another, especially when we start adding foreign awards to the mix! bahamut0013^words_deeds 06:04, 7 March 2009 (UTC)

need some more admin help

Need some admin help regarding a troublesome anon IP user who keeps re-adding an external link for a non-notable parody to 8-Bit Theater. See discussion at Talk:8-Bit Theater#Flash movies. I origionally assumed this was a simple good-faith error, but the anon has repeatedly ignored attempts to communicate, even undoing one of User:XLinkBot's many warnings. I have read the conflict of interest definitions and the reasons why other companies (sic Purell and Germ-X) qualify for Wikipedia articles and J & A Companies, L.L.C. (Germ Out) may not qualify. Question 1 2 (the first one): Not particularly. When loading an image that is smaller than the full resolution, I believe that most browsers will load the full image size and shrink it for the thumbnail (not 100% sure, and I'm sure it varies from browser to browser). I just didn't want to make the image so tall that there is a large amount of white space above and below the text. If there was a gain, it would be negligable anyway.

Question 2 (the second one): The image in question is a .SVG file. The nature of a Scalable Vector Graphics means that larger or smaller images are completely unnecessary: the image quality and size are the same at every conceivable resolution of the thumbnail. Not to mention that manually swapping them out would take months, even a bot would take many days to complete such a task.

Question 3: We could, but I'm not at all convinced that it would be worth doing. The current solution works perfectly fine, and I don't see any potential gain for the amount of tedious man-hours it would take to replace the current usage. Of course, if you know somebody who would be willing to program a bot, then I might make a template for it to use; but I would expect your help in fixing any false positives the bot mindlessly created. bahamut0013^words_deeds 16:49, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm going to write it off as a good-faith edit. If you look at the history, I changed my mind twice. :P I dunno what that award is, but it does look remarkably similar to the Civil-War era MOH... but as I can tell, it wasn't unusual at all for the period to have officers wearing strange awards, whether foreign or commemorative, that weren't authorized for wear in the US. The question is how I missed it the first time; I'm going through Category:United States Marine Corps generals again to cleanup any mistakes I've made. If you get some spare time, it'd be cool if you could take a look at User:bahamut0013/ribbon workshop/incomplete and see if you have any info on those names there.

talk pages of redirect articles

I have a question about policy, and I couldn't find the answer at WP:redirect. I've recently found a few stub articles that are unlikely to ever grow past start-class at best, and merged thier content into a very closely-related article. However, there has been a little bit of content discussion on the talk pages. Should I leave the talk pages alone, or copy the content into the main talk page and redirect?
For example, Platoon Leaders Class and Officer Candidates Course seemed unlikely to grow beyond what they were, so I merged them to Officer Candidates School (U.S. Marine Corps), and the combined article makes for a much more rich understanding. However, the talk pages have some discussion, and they are still into Category:Stub-Class military history articles and the like because of {{WPMILHIST}} being on the talk pages. bahamut0013^words_deeds 06:02, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

You've made a really good point. It seems as if Bea has always been a tough subject in regard to her USMC sevice, only if she would come out and strighten things out. Right now there is discussion going on the article's (Bea's) talk page about that. Some planned moves

I've been slightly irritated by some of the haphazard naming conventions used for a year or so, and I'm thinking that I might work my way through Category:United States Marine Corps and change all instances of "U.S. Marine Corps" to "United States Marine Corps" for article titles. I'm big on consistancy, especially since I have a hard time remembering which version to type in to get to a specific article (for example, in trying to reach List of U.S. Marines‎, I always goof and type "List of United States Marines" into the search bar). Patrick M. Novack Article

As a person that was largely involved in the "Silver Star Debate", I would like your opinion on the deletion of the article for Patrick M. Novack. I believe that there is enough there (Law Enforcement commendations, Communtiy Service accolades) that when combined with the Silver Stars he earned in Vietnam (and the fact that he was the Team Leader of a Special Forces LRRP Team), he should be considered notable. Hi ERCheck. Since you've been involved with the article on ACN, I am turning to you in the hope that you could possibly have a look at what a brand-new user going by the moniker of TheEditor22 is doing to it? Have a look also at what he's been saying on the Talk page (and my own user Talk page. He seems to be a bit ... odd. I'm not experienced in it, but it appears there needs to be some kind of dispute resolution needed, and talking with him isn't going to do it, as he seems to think he's acting according to some kind of Wikipedia consensus. I am wondering if this user TheEditor22 has a sock puppet named Martin Ford which has also weighed in on the discussion. Both users edited for the first time within an hour of each other (TheEditor22 - 17:56, 28 June 2009 and Martin Ford - 16:56, 28 June 2009) and have concerned themselves solely with this article. Since he seems to be well-familiar with Wikipedia editing, I wouldn't be surprised that TheEditor22 is a sock puppet himself.

If it sounds like I'm frustrated and not sure what to do about all this -- and trying to stay out of the edit war, too -- well, that's what it is. If you cannot assist in taming this situation, can you suggest how to go about it? Thanks! Mike (talk) 18:13, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Take a look at Steve Brozak, if you get the time. There are a number of SPAs dedicated to making sure the article looks like a resume and advertisement for the companies he runs, with no references. It didn't even take 12 hours for one of them to remove the cleanup tags I added. I'm not very knowledgable in the notability of businessmen, so perhaps you can make the judgement on whether or not he's notable enough for inclusion. If you haven't noticed the discussion at Talk:List of notable United States Marines#Remove edit warning, then please take a look; we are considering using template:editnotice, but it requires an admin to use it in article space. Tony and I have been conversing back and forth a bit on our talk pages as well, but here's the gist: we both agree it might be good for a trial run, but he's not confident in his tech skills to make it work right the first try. I'm uncomfortable with doing trying it through a proxy, since that necessitates periods of time (possibly lengthy ones) where a flawed template is viewable by the public, and I can't really think of how to do a trial or sandbox with something like that. I figured you had a good enough grasp of coding and formatting that you could handle it, if you are interested in getting onvolved. bahamut0013^words_deeds 09:26, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

I figure that the text that's already in the lead paragraph would do fine. As far as implementation goes, I think WP:edit notice covers it all. I think we have to have the entire warning there in the template. Directing a casual editor to read a warning on another page will probably get disregarded, but having the warning there is more likely to work. You should add your tweaks, then get Tony to read it, and if he doesn't have any modifications of his own, we can post a preview on the talk page to see if anyone else has a comment. • • I looked at "editnotice" in your Sandbox and it looks real fine to me. By the way ER, I wrote an article about the last uprising in Puerto Rico against Spanish colonial in 1897 one year before the Spanish-American War. The cool thing about the article is that this event, where the Puerto Rican flag was unfurled in Puerto Rican soil for the first time, has been omitted from the history books and almost no one knows about it. You can't even find it in the internet and my descentdents on my mothers side, the Mattei's, where protagonists. Check it out when you time: Intentona de Yauco. General Nyland

I finally found the photo we discussed last year, and added it to General Nyland's article. I was surprised to discover there is a second general in the photo -- Lieutenant General Bruce B. Knutson. It may be rather rare to find a single photo of so few midshipmen (5) including more than one future Marine Corps General. Thewellman (talk) 06:25, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

I don't know if copies of University of New Mexico Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps public affairs publications still exist. I recall at least two. There was a quarterly newsletter called the Sunline and an annual yearbook called the Mark ##, where ## were the last two digits of the year of publication 19##.
