Soweto suburbs edit

Thanks for taking the time to add the Soweto suburb information. However, you should know that "amaXhosa" and "amaZulu" mean Xhosa people and Zulu people, not the language. That would be isiXhosa and isiZulu. However, the preferred formatting on Wikipedia is either Xhosa language or Xhosa Thanks, and keep up the good work! Changing article's title edit

How do I change the title of an article that I have created?

I gave the article an outdated name.

Also, how do I indicated that there is more than one article with this name, although they refer to different subjects?

To rename an article you have to move it to a new title, this page should tell you all you need to know. When there is more than one item which could (sensibly) be linked from a given title we use disambiguation. See this page for information on that. If you have more detailed question on the subject then let us know.
For future reference, it is not a good idea to put the helpme as a heading, it doesn't render properly and means the small "edit" link doesn't appear making it harder to reply. Thanks --pgk(talk) 07:52, 10 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

Attribution of images edit

I would like someone with more Wikipedia experience than I to check my Soweto page to see whether:

 • the images that I uploaded have correct tags and
 • are used within the generally accepted Wikipedia rules.

Thank you, and apologies for the trouble.

Can do. —WAvegetarian(talk) 05:39, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

PS: I am also a little concerned about the Hector Pieterson image, which was on the site when I inherited it. I know that the image does have copyright, although it has been widely in use all over the world.

Any suggestions?

Unfortunately even though it has been copied everywhere, it is under copyright and a noncommercial use only license. This just doesn't work on Wikipedia unless under the fair use criteria. That starts with "to illustrate the event in question." Fair use is an iffy subject and the burden of proof rests on the claimant. Given how much controversy there has been about the copyright and licensing of the photo, I'd err on the side of caution. Illustrating Soweto riots is a probable, IMO, but I don't think it will fly on Soweto. Let me finish checking the rest. —WAvegetarian(talk) 05:54, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Alright, finally done, sort of. I fixed the incorrect licenses and will work on figuring out the proper license for the map, but the free use with attribution bit means it can stay. The others seem fine. The photo credits don't need to be in the image captions. All of the licensing, attribution and description stuff goes on the image's page. —WAvegetarian(talk) 06:09, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
 • Thanks! Please do let me know what the issues were with the licenses, so I can add the correct ones for next time.
When you see the cc-by logo on the flickr page you need to click on it. It links to the version that it is being licensed under. Both were licensed under cc-by-2.0, but you tagged them as cc-by-2.5. I hate to inform you that the images from www.joburg.org.za have to go. I found the license text which includes "The website and content may not be reproduced, duplicated, copied, resold or otherwise exploited for any commercial purpose without the express, prior written consent of the webmaster ." Wikipedia's license requires all images to be either fair use or free for commercial use and we are trying to phase out the fair use ones at that. Even getting specific written permission from the webmaster to allow use on Wikipedia wouldn't work as it needs to be copyable by anyone for anything, i.e. "free". This is why there are so few images on Wikipedia as compared to how many are bouncing around the web.—WAvegetarian(talk) 07:04, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
 • Could the map remain, seeing that it occurs in a public document distributed by the Johannesburg city council, or not?
INAL (I'm not a lawyer), but since the version that was uploaded appears to have been retrieved from a digital source, I believe that the licensing of the source applies. I don't know what license the city council releases the images in its flyers under. In any event, Jimbo Wales, the creator and God-King of Wikipedia, decreed on the mailing list that images under this type of license must be "deleted on sight."[1], sorry. It seems to me that it shouldn't be too hard to find/create a free map of the city, though. —WAvegetarian(talk) 18:35, 19 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
 • Thanks for the help. Now I know... DocDee 06:44, 20 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

A tag has been placed on Buysile Mandindi, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable, that is, why an article about that subject should be included in Wikipedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert notability may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is notable, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add hangon on the top of the page (below the existing db tag) and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. thadius856talk|airports|neutrality 22:04, 9 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Two pages about the same person edit

Although I did do a Wikipedia search for Billy Mandindi without find anything, I have since noticed that a such page does actually exist 2.

Meanwhile, I started a page for the same man under the title Buyisile Mandindi, which was mentioned under this name in two other Wikipedia stubs ( The purple shall govern and Purple Rain Protest )

How do I combine the material from both into one page?

I presume that need to merge the content manually, and then delete one of the two pages, right?

What are the criteria for deleting one and not the other ?

Thanks. DocDee 00:30, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, merge the content manually but instead of deleting one of the pages, it can be turned into a "redirect" so that anyone who types in or links to either name will be sent to the appropriate article. This can be done by replacing the whole page with "#REDIRECT Billy Mandindi" or "#REDIRECT Buysile Mandindi", depending on which is a more appropriate title (generally, the more appropriate title is name that is the most common English usage). You should say in your edit summary what title you merged the text from. —Centrxtalk • 00:36, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hello DocDee,
You can either redirect the page you created to Billy Mandindi instead, or propose that the two pages be merged. The links I provided should have all the information you need. If not, feel free to reply here—I'll watch your talk page and be sure to reply as soon as I can. Hope this helps. —XhantarTalk 00:42, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
You don't need to and probably shouldn't propose that they be merged. You created one of them, and given the obscurity of the subject and the fact that it is indeed the very same person, the only reason to "propose" a merge is if you don't want to do it yourself, but given that you created the article and asked the question, you probably do want to do it yourself. —Centrxtalk • 00:50, 10 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

AfD nomination of Hucrest Elementary edit

I've nominated Hucrest Elementary, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that Hucrest Elementary satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hucrest Elementary and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of Hucrest Elementary during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Corpx 08:23, 28 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

William King edit

I've no problem altering it, but I read the article, and sailor seemed best to describe his life story, including his later yachting experiences. Sailor doesn't necessarily mean a rank lower than officer, but again I've no problem with moving it again if you'd prefer. William King (Royal Navy) would be the best alternative, if you're happy with this? Benea (talk) 23:12, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Page moved and double redirects fixed. Kind regards, Benea (talk) 23:37, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
You are quite right of course. I suspect that the creator of the page was confused by his most notable achievement, but as you point out he was a geologist, and made the breakthrough he did through that field, rather than anatomy per se. I've changed the page name accordingly. Benea (talk) 04:27, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Skokiaanlabel.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Skokiaanlabel.JPG. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:35, 24 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Formatting issues edit

Could someone please help me with footnote formatting on my "Skokiaan" article?

For some reason that I cannot fathom, footnotes 65-75 and 92 display the webaddress, instead of hiding it list of all versions.

Up to this point, and in between, the footnotes display correctly.

How can I correct this, please?

DocDee (talk) 18:40, 10 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Bulawayo_Sweet_Rhythms_Band_Skokiaan_1954.ogg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Bulawayo_Sweet_Rhythms_Band_Skokiaan_1954.ogg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice?  ★  Bigr Tex 00:18, 9 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

This message was about Image:Bulawayo_Sweet_Rhythms_Band_Skokiaan_1954.ogg, not Image:Skokiaanlabel.JPG. Non-free music samples, like non-free images require a fair use rationale. I hope this explains better. If you have further questions, fell free to ask.  ★  Bigr Tex 02:17, 19 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Good articles on the South African pre-apartheid rugby union bodies--Bcp67 (talk) 19:12, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I should have put "apartheid" rather than "pre-apartheid"! The articles have also helped me introduce some appropriate links into articles, e.g. in the 1980 British Lions tour to South Africa I have now been able to link the match played against a SARA Invitation XV to the SAARB article and likewise with the South African Country Districts XV. I've also linked a match in the 1972 England tour article to the SAARB Leopards team rather than SA Africans (Bantu). Thanks for your help.--Bcp67 (talk) 11:33, 29 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Call for Wikipedians in Residence in Africa edit

Hello,

I hope you are well and thriving!! WikiAfrica has just put out a call for two Wikipedians in Residence. One in Cape Town at WikiAfrica, at the Africa Centre; and the other for WikiAfrica Cameroon in Douala, at doual’art. If you are interested, please contact either Marilyn [marilyn.doualabell doualart.org] for the WikiAfrica Cameroon call or Isla [islahf africacentre.net] for the WikiAfrica position in Cape Town.

If you are not interested in applying, I would be very grateful if you could spread this call far and wide among your networks to ensure that both projects get excellent candidates. Here is the link for the information page: http://www.wikiafrica.net/two-wikipedians-in-residence-for-africa/

Nice work on the biographies edit

Hey. I've noticed some of the biographies of South African rugby union players and coaches you've created and expanded. Have you considered whether some of them should be nominated at WP:GAN? A lot of them would be of, or close to meeting, the Good Article criteria? Regardless, keep up the good work because I'm enjoying the reads! -- Shudde talk 03:42, 3 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

I think Danie Craven, Rob Louw and Jannie Engelbrecht may be appropriate (in that order). There are only a couple of suggestions I might make: expand the leads as per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section, and if you cite a book/journal/thesis, provide page numbers. Other than that, some of the prose could be reorganised to remove any singe sentence paragraphs, but apart from that I think those three articles would meet the criteria. -- Shudde talk 12:25, 4 January 2014 (UTC)Reply
Seconding Shudde's comments above, I also very much enjoy your South African articles too and they are well-written and informative and just the sort of stuff I like read to about RU. Would be more than happy to work with you a bit on bringing up some articles to GA standard if you wanted some assistance. Doc Craven must be a good one to start with - not just a towering figure in the game in SA but one of the most significant characters in the 20th century game as a whole. I've nominated Loftus Versfeld (the man rather than the place!) for DYK today, hopefully that will make it to the main page in due course. --Bcp67 (talk) 10:29, 9 January 2014 (UTC)Reply

License tagging for File:Siddie Siddie Siddie.ogg edit

Thanks for uploading File:Siddie Siddie Siddie.ogg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.
