Polistes versicolor image edit

Hi Diana. Thank you for your additions to wasp articles. I work with the Wiki Education Foundation, and part of my job is support editors like you with your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you uploaded an image to Commons, File:Screen Shot 2014-10-16 at 10.01.10 AM.png, which you are using in your sandbox article about Polistes versicolor. Unfortunately, if you look at the actual license attached to that image, it's a Creative Commons non-commercial license, which is incompatible with Wikipedia's licensing requirements. (Note that the actual license is CC-NC +, where the + means that you have to ask if you want to use the image commercially. You may want to contact that the owner of the image to see if they might be willing to release it with a more open license. If so, please see c:Commons:OTRS for more information. Thanks for your reply.

This is one of the areas where copyright gets kind of funny. Using a non-commercial image on Wikipedia wouldn't violate the image copyright, but Wikipedia is designed to be free for anyone to reuse - even commercial users. As a result, 'only on Wikipedia' usage isn't allowed. Commons is meant to be even more stringent in its licensing because files on Commons can be reused by anyone. (On Wikipedia itself there are a limited set of conditions in which non-free material can actually be used - see WP:NFCC if you're interested in knowing more.) Hope this clarifies things a little. The biggest learning curve on Wikipedia tends to be related to copyright - it took me years here to figure out a lot of the nuances - and it stems from the fact that Wikipedia isn't just meant to be an encyclopaedia, it's meant to be a free encyclopaedia, and it has been a major player in the free and open source world. Did you know...? edit

Thank you for your recent contribution to Polistes versicolor.

I wonder if you would like to consider submitting it as a candidate for the "Did you know...?" feature. DYKs (as they are commonly called) are short snippets taken from Wikipedia's newest articles and, if approved, appear on the Main Page. You can learn more about this at Wikipedia:Did you know.

Your article Polistes versicolor appears to meet the criteria for submission as a DYK, but would be greatly improved if you expanded the lead section to briefly summarize the main points of the article. You might also want to add additional wikilinks to other articles in Wikipedia. If you choose to submit a short (and interesting) fact from your article, please read the rules and the supplementary guidelines carefully. Please ask me if you have further questions.

According to the DYK tool, your article was created or expanded on October 16. DYKs must be nominated within 7 days of the creation or 5-fold expansion of the article, so if you choose to submit your article, please act quickly! Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:37, 20 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
