TBI

Hello,

I've become very interested in TBI, particularly mTBI as I am a physician with training in diagnosis of WAD/CAD injuries and have seen quite a few patients with mTBI who are unaware that they suffer from its effects yet can't figure our why they feel 'scrambled'.

I've attended cont ed seminars on the topic and was glad to see the pages you have started and are interested in. I have become frustrated with myself after having suffered the effects of a mTBI due to neurotoxic chemical exposure. As such, I have forgotten the specifics of much of what I have learned on the subjects. General concepts are still intact, but the specifics are 'fuzzy'.

I am recently involved with the Brain Injury Association in my state, having spoken at two of the annual conferences. I spoke before a dual, joint committee on TBI and on under-recognized causes (returning military, 'minor' MVCs, and neuro-toxin exposures).

I am currently pursuing 'Function Medicine' www.functionalmedicine.org and plan to attend the Brain Injury Association of America (www.biausa.org) annual conference in Las Vegas next month.

I've already been able to refer a few patients to the VA in the San Francisco area for work-up and for their benefits. The VA just (Oct 2007) began recognizing mTBI in returning soldiers AND in performing appropriate workup, referral, treatment and benefits for them.

Prior work includes a little bit in toxic tort, particularly in prolonged exposure to mold, the toxins associated with certain species of molds under certain conditions and with toxins of concomitant bacterial species.

If you get a chance to look them up, a few of the 'experts' involved with the study of mTBI and PET scans include Dr. Joseph Wu, MD and Dr. Herbert S. Gross, MD (Neuropsychiatrist).

I'm still learning how to edit and code here, so please bear with me. I have a great interest in sharing that which I have learned and have a strong desire to help others, but I often find myself spread thin and have not devoted much time to learn how best to contribute to Wikipedia.

I'm on the west coast and love the mountains, ocean and rivers. There's some beautiful country around.

Wow, Rob, this is the most exciting message I've gotten in months! An actual TBI expert, here to help out! Lord knows we need it, before now I've been the only TBI enthusiast to edit really actively, and it gets a little lonely :-P Not to mention, I'm not an expert and there's the distinct possibility that I'm unknowingly introducing errors and distortions into articles. Pages that I'd especially love fact checkings on are concussion and post-concussion syndrome (not to put you to work right away!). But your input is welcome on any article, of course.

Yeah, editing Wikipedia can be hard at first. I'm glad to answer questions and help out in any way I can, just drop me another note. We are very big on being patient and welcoming with new editors here. One thing that will make life way easier for you and folks you work with is to create an account (if you don't have one), which is free, super easy, and comes with perks. No worries about the time commitment thing, it's a volunteer project and everyone has other commitments, so there's no time requirement of any sort.

I'm very excited to have you helping out! Currently we don't have any docs with neuroscience specialty on the project and they're sorely missed. Sorry to hear about your own mTBI! My recent work on concussion-related articles has made me acutely aware of how awful that must be.

You're right that the article needs inline references but unfortunately I won't be able to provide them as the German source article doesn't have any and I don't have access to the reference works to get them myself. Wow, too bad about the inline refs, that's by far the most important thing I brought up. You can't get access to any of the books? e.g. through google books or a library? Or can you find other references that aren't necessarily cited in that article? (They might still have some of the same info). Maybe you could contact the writers of the German FA and see if they could help you out--I bet they'd be flattered that you'd put so much work into translating their article. I realize it'll be a lot of work (and sorry, didn't see you were kind of on wikibreak till I looked at your talk page just now), but without them the article really isn't verified. Undone Edit September 5th

I received a message saying "Sorry to undo your edit, but it's against Wikipedia guidelines to add people that aren't famous or don't meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines to Wikipedia articles, as you (or someone using this IP) did to September 5." I have only had a Wikipedia account for a month or two and thus it is impossible that I made that edit. I only use my account to edit minor grammatical and spelling errors that I find on the pages I read. Thanks for your message (above) - I did read it but haven't had a chance to investigate google books or any other potential sources yet. I'll see what I can do.

Meanwhile, I've spent a few minutes tackling your request, so here goes:

First image:

Computed Tomography: massive subarachnoid haemorrhage with ruptured large aneurysm of the arteria basilaris.

The computed tomography image represents a section through the skull at the level of a hat brim. The section through the skull is thus near the skull base.

Imagine the patient lying on their back with their feet towards the viewer. This means that the front of the skull is shown at the top of the image and the right and left sides are interchanged. Therefore, for example, the structure numbered [2] is situated in the right hemisphere of the patient's brain.

The skull bone, shown in white, surrounds the brain and its blood vessels. At the front, the frontal sinus is depicted in black.

The aneurysm [1] is in this case very large. The blood from the ruptured aneurysm has spread to the surrounding cisterns ([2] = cisterna valleculae cerebri, which appears relatively clear, however, on the left-hand side [3]). The blood has spread far into the small subarachnoid space. Signs of the significant findings are the evidence of blood in the interhemisphere fissure [4] and on individual convolutions of the brain (Gyri) [6] of the right brain hemisphere (right hemisphere, frontal lobe). There is also a haemorrhage in the fourth ventricle [5].

The lateral ventricles [7] are free of blood.

One part of this I'm not sure about is the sentence "Signs of the significant findings..." - apart from the fact that that doesn't make particularly nice English, I'm also not sure whether "significant" should be "serious" or "grave" given the context - the word "erheblich[en]" could mean any of those.

Second image:

Angiography: massive subarachnoid haemorrhage with ruptured large aneurysm of the arteria basilaris.

This digital subtraction angiogram shows the same case as in the CT image above.

The aneurysm [1] is located in the region of the arteria basilaris [2]. This cerebral artery arises from the arteriae vertebrales [3], into which the contrast medium was injected. Further along its course, the arteria basilaris splits into the two arteriae cerebri posteriores [4], which in this case are inconspicuous.

Again, there's a bit of ambiguity here as that final "inconspicuous" ("unauffällig") could also mean "without pathological findings" in medical terminology. Hopefully you'll be able to use your better-informed medical judgement to decide what phrasing to use!

I guess the most interesting thing would have been this minor conflict I had with an editor who was placed under certain WP:ARBMAC restrictions. He had this to say on my talk page:

In my personal thinking you have created trap in article SAO Western Slavonia so that your "favorite" administrator can block me but it has failed.

I know who he was refering to as my favorite administrator (Future Perfect at Sunrise - the same admin who placed him under ARBMAC and allowed me use of rollback) but I was feeling in a good mood to be a little sarcastic and answer with

What does Delldot have anything to do with this?

in reference to the favorite admin quip, going so far as to click the Show preview button but decided against it since he might not have found that clever.
As far as crap is concerned, it's hard to hold back. The ratio of crap to people trying to hold it back seems to be getting worse but kudos to us for being gluttons for punishment and ignoring that fact, ha?

Your opinion

Hey!

What's your stance on handing out blocks to accounts that are apparently created for vandalism only but that don't really edit enough to generate adequate warnings for a WP:AIV report? Specifically, Tusteer1234 (talk · contribs) has been around for about a week and made 3 no-no edits. Would you keep warning them or do you consider this pretty clear cut for a block? I ask because I don't think an AIV report would do much (only 3 edits in 8 days) and I'm not quite sure what else to do but I wouldn't be surprised to see him/her re-offend.

I think if it's clear that they're not here to help out, it's ok to block them as vandal only. I tend to be pretty conservative with blocking, because I feel like it's a lot easier to revert vandalism than to make good edits, so if we stand to lose any good edits it's not worth it unless it's an awful lot of vandalism. So it really would depend on the context. But with accounts it's simpler than with IPs because it's presumably just one person. So if they're making nothing but bad edits, I think it's totally reasonable to block them. I don't think the need for the edits to be current is as big of a deal with accounts, because again, you know it's just one person. Similarly, there's no need to go back down to a level 1 or 2 if a few days have passed with an account as you would with an IP. I think most people agree that it's not necessary to give all 4 levels of warning before blocking. I've been known to give 2 and block indef as vandal only if they're not doing anything productive, and like I said, I'm probably on the conservative end. I would think you can get away with reporting less recent vandalism from an account to AIV, but I don't know how other admins handle it. The only caveat would be that, though it's rare, it does happen that vandals are turned to valuable contributors (I actually met a dude in real life the other day that says he both vandalizes and makes good edits. It was a big 'what the hell' moment for me, but it just goes to show that vandals aren't trying to be nasty and don't realize it's that harmful). So of course there's never a reason to be rude or mean about it, and it's reasonable to bring it up with someone if you see them doing that. Eh, a little off-topic here. In short, I would give two or three warnings total, not starting over even if time has passed since the last one. Once they pass the last one, I'd report to AIV. Oh, and if they're vandalizing real slowly and not past a last warning, it's probably worth keeping an eye on them. I've been known to put a link to a vandal's contribs page in my to do list so I'll see it and remember to check it. Hope this was vaguely coherent and helpful! Lemme know if you want to discuss more. That's pretty insightful, it's actually exactly what I was looking for. I always knew you were conservative with blocks but I always figured it's just because of your personality (you're always so uber-nice to everyone). This answers my question so thank you!

By the way, I think it's hillarious what you said about trying to figure out a satisfactory way to reply where it alerts people quickly and keeps the conversation together because I'm always in that dilemma. When I first started editing, I simply replied on others' talk pages without caring about readability. Then I stared replying on others' talk pages and cut-and-pasting the reply on my own page as well. I'm not 100% sold on the concept of I'll reply here to keep the thread together because I'm not convinced people will find it so what I do now is I answer on other people's talk pages and provide a diff on my talk page to my reply. Guess who I learned that from ? :)

Yeah, aargh, I wish there was some mediawiki thing that could give them an alert box for a reply on your page, but I can't imagine how you'd implement that. I'm not totally into the posting a diff on my page either, but it does kind of help me if I need to track something back down for some reason. But it's a bit of a pain. Most of the people I communicate with are newbies, so just replying on my talk page wouldn't work, because most of them wouldn't know to look. For a bit I tried replying on my talk page and alerting the person, but it was awkward for archiving because I didn't know if they'd seen it yet (though I guess I could archive bit by bit rather than wholesale like I always do). Although thinking about it now, if I'm posting a diff somewhere, maybe I should be doing it on the other person's talk page and keeping the discussion together here. Maybe I'll give it a try for a while.

Hi hi! I can't change usernames, but a bureaucrat can do it for you if you put in a request at WP:CHU (just follow the directions listed there). However, I don't recommend changing your username unless it really needs changing (e.g. for privacy); it's a big pain. It's confusing to other users, and various things need to be changed. Further, you only get one or maybe two chances to change your name, so if you wanted to change it again at some point in the future your request might be denied. Need your advice again! ;)

On my talk page near the bottom, title Twinkle, you will see me talking to another editor, WLU. We are trying to put a picture into an article, [1] but we don't know how to. There is a link there with the picture, but we aren't sure if it is copywrited protected though I also got this picture emailed to me for use by a friend who I suspect took it from the website of Natalizumab. Hi Justin! Not sure, what type of info are you looking for? How about a google search for "football" with "concussion"? You can do google books and google scholar as well. The good news is, there's an awful lot of info on sports-related concussion because the term "concussion" is really only used in sports medicine nowadays. Help!

Wow, unfortunate situation. I'll start by suggesting that you be completely honest about everything. Even if you've done something wrong, people will be much more understanding if you're honest about it, and you can be forgiven. It will likely go much harder for you if there's anything you don't own up to that's later discovered. And these guys are good, so it probably will be. So here's my suggestion: you should just explain your case; tell them exactly what really happened.

For the future, I'd recommend keeping absolute transparency and honesty in mind, so that stuff like this doesn't happen again. For example, if you've communicated with someone in real life about an AFD, mention that in your AFD vote. Just a little line, something like, "just so you all know, I heard about this from my real life friend and wanted to weigh in". That will provide an explanation for what might otherwise seem like sockpuppetry. Plus, it might help with people who are concerned about meatpuppetry (e.g. coordinating with people you know in real life to alter a vote or other measure of consensus). I don't have any experience with sockpuppetry cases, but it seems like it should be possible for your friends to prove that they're different people from you (e.g., couldn't they edit from somewhere else at the same time or something?). If you're willing to submit to some kind of test like that, you might ask about that on the page set up for your sockpuppetry case, maybe someone with experience with that will help you. It might not be necessary, since these folks have tons of experience dealing with stuff like this and are really quite good at figuring it out. Hopefully one of them can help you. It is our own words

It is our own words with actual court record documented proof who our ancestors was. we are getting sick and tired of all these people that are not from our family going around and wanting to say we are african american......we are sick and tired of people seeing us listed as "free person of color" in census records and thinking we was african american.....native americans had no classifacation in census records...anyone that was not white was listed as free person of color.
