GOCE August 2015 newsletter
Guild of Copy Editors August 2015 Newsletter

Hello DW. You blocked a problematic user who has used multiple IPs and has a very blatant MO before. He is without a doubt operating currently as User talk:Thompson20. I don't know how to open an official sock puppet investigation and I don't do many of those ANI etc things as they require far too much formatting. Page protection/dispute resolution on Shockwave (video game)
Hi. I'm unclear how I'm supposed to proceed from here. For that matter, I'm unclear on why it was decided to protect Stormwatch's version of the articles. Prior to merging the article, I put up a merger proposal with complete reasoning, put the appropriate tags on both articles, asked for input from relevant WikiProjects, and waited the requisite seven days. Stormwatch took no action during all this time, but within minutes of my completing the arduous work of merging, he reverted my edits with no justification. He has still not attempted to justify his reverts or resolve the dispute on a talk page, just posted flame bait on my personal talk page and reported me for edit warring. He can't even seem to keep straight what it is he wants; when he first started reverting, he was restoring the content to have two separate articles on the same exact subject, whereas now his reverts are for a merge to Shockwave (video game). Is this sort of behavior really now considered the appropriate way to establish consensus?--Martin IIIa (talk) 12:10, 28 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. Continuous vandalism by User:Bikaz
You had blocked a User, Bikaz, he is continuously involved in edit warring and vandalism. A very new ID is also supporting him at Ahmed Raza Khan page. What is going on?
To Darkwind: One of my students reports that: I'm "blocked my an administrator in response to abuse". I'm not sure why this would be but its not letting me get onto Wikipedia. I am told this was your doing. I have looked at her user and user/talk pages, as well as another student's sandbox where she was working on a project overseen by the Wiki Education foundation. Please explain why you have taken this action, and why you have given no explanation to the student. This project is a major part of the grade for my history of psychology class, and now the student is blocked from participating. user:Ian (Wiki Ed) user:ragesoss J.R. - FYI, Ian at Wiki Ed says: I suspect she tried to edit while logged out. Darkwind has only preformed two blocks this year, both of IP addresses in Asia. In addition, it looks like he almost only does "anon only" blocks. So my guess is that the IP she was editing from was blocked, and she didn't realize that she was logged out. (Note: she was probably editing from a university cluster computer.) J.R. Council (talk) 16:49, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
- @James Council: I recently blocked only anonymous users (i.e., anyone who is not logged in with an account) from the IP address range 112.118.128.0/19 (which is any IP between 112.118.128.0 and 112.118.159.255) due to repeated vandalism and attempts to evade more specific, less impactful blocks. The block was for a period of 36 hours starting at 20:50 UTC, 14 April 2016. You can see the error message a logged-out user would have received here: {{schoolblock}}. The user in question should have been able to edit while logged in, and the block would have expired at 16 April 2016 08:50 UTC in any case.

- @Mitzi.humphrey: After another review of the deletion discussion, I don't see any way my closure as "delete" was in error; the consensus was clearly that Mr. Humphrey is not considered sufficiently notable by Wikipedia guidelines. To be more specific, the consensus was that none of the following are sufficient to convey notability: being a member of the Presbyterian general assembly or one or more of its subcommittees, being a typical lawyer or judge, or being a college trustee.
- I am happy to place a copy of the last version of the article in your user space so that you may access the text and possibly improve the article, but please be aware that you must address the notability concerns raised in the AfD discussion before moving the article back to article space. Otherwise, it is likely the article would fail another deletion discussion. What this basically means is that you need to find and document something else that he is notable for, in order to restore this as a regular article.

They added George Jones' "You Couldn't Get the Picture" to Deaton-Flaingen's list of directed videos ([2]) even though it was directed by Marc Ball ([3]) and Keith Whitley's "When You Say Nothing at All" and "I'm No Stranger to the Rain" to Michael Salomon's list of directed videos ([4]) even though they were directed by Stephen Buck ([5]) and the rest of their edits have added music videos that don't even exist. They never add sources, warnings to their talk page have gone ignored and they've been blocked twice before for the same behaviour. Eric444 (talk) 11:30, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Eric444: I think what you're missing here is the distinction between vandalism and other types of inappropriate edits. Just because an edit results in a factual error doesn't automatically make it vandalism. To quote policy:
Even if misguided, willfully against consensus, or disruptive, any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia is not vandalism. Edit warring over content is not vandalism. Careful consideration may be required to differentiate between edits that are beneficial, edits that are detrimental but well-intentioned, and edits that are vandalism.
- None of what you describe is obvious vandalism, in the sense that determining the user's intention would be required to differentiate between "trying to be helpful, but is wrong" (which is disruptive, but not vandalism) and "intentionally trying to damage the articles" (vandalism). That makes your report inappropriate for AIV, which is a forum for requesting quick, decisive action, and does not allow for discussion or for the editor to defend themselves. –Darkwind (talk) 21:03, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- The user has been making similar edits since November 2015 with increasing frequency, sometimes with misleading edit summaries like "added links" or "fixed grammar", and my messages on their talk page asking them to stop have gone ignored. They've added incorrect information to Michael Salomon's article six times in the last month and Deaton-Flanigen Production's article five times. They added incorrect information to Steven Goldmann's article again this afternoon. At what point does it cross the line from "trying to be helpful" to "intentionally trying to damage the articles"? - @Eric444: Again, just to be clear, I wasn't trying to say that I thought the user's edits were appropriate. My specific point, in declining your report at AIV, was that it was going to take me longer than ~30 seconds to figure out, so it wasn't obvious enough for an AIV report. You can try opening a thread at WP:ANI the next time they're actively disrupting (maybe now?), that's where most disruptive-but-more-subtle cases go. Ah, actually, I see that you rejected the edits from the other day to her bio. - @Aregenberg: The update to her list of works is probably fine (although, as an editorial matter, the list is looking a little too long and too detailed compared to the rest of the information we have in the article about her). What I was referring to was the edits you made to the biographical material in the first couple of paragraphs, which came across as way over the top in upselling the institute.
- Sentences like "she transformed what was an informal interest group of faculty across Johns Hopkins into one of the leading and largest bioethics programs in the world" and are considered unencyclopedically promotional, and are not generally accepted by the Wikipedia editorial community. Also, because this is an encyclopedia article, standard biographical information such as birth date and place, etc. are desired.
- Also, since you work(ed) with her, there is an inherent conflict of interest here. In general, we strongly prefer that employees of an institution do not directly edit articles about the institution or their colleagues; the excessively promotional language I mentioned is one of those reasons. - @BbradleyLA: First, three quick tips. 1) Don't indent your paragraphs with a space. The MediaWiki software interprets that as "please make this paragraph a fixed-width font".
2) There's no need to {{ping}} me when you write on my own talk page; editors automatically get informed of edits to their own talk pages. I have to ping you if I write here because you don't automatically get notified. 3) Don't forget to sign your comments on a talk page with four tildes ~~~~. In this case, a bot came along and did it for you.
- Second, thank you for being up-front about your editing goals. We absolutely welcome contributions from everyone, it's just that we've found that people with conflicts-of-interest have a great deal of difficulty focusing on Wikipedia's editorial goals and standards. Many people tend to upsell themselves or their organizations, downplay any negativity, and generally just try to make the article as flattering as possible. Wikipedia's goals, on the other hand, are to have neutrally-written and verifiable information in every article.
- As for your actual path to achieving the goal of up-to-date information in articles you are related to, I suggest following the steps in this page to use the {{request edit}} template. That template will add your proposed changes to a list, and an experienced Wikipedia editor will come around eventually, review the changes, possibly suggest alterations, and ideally, make the changes you've requested. That way, you can work with an interested editor to avoid promotional language and "whitewashing", but still get the information in the articles to be as up-to-date and accurate as possible. –Darkwind (talk) 22:07, 12 July 2016 (UTC)

UFC 200 situation
Hey, just noticed I thought Renzoy16 was an admin... So I restored it again before a proper decision here. If you considered that as part of the edit warring: my bad, really thought there was an admin input earlier. Anyways, I'm not restoring it again if it comes to it. If he pulls off that same edit, I'll recall the warning I sent on the IP talk page and this discussion before proper measures. A edit dispute should be dealt with, sure. But if someone shows up proposing changes, he's the one that needs to propose a discussion. I always find it difficult to be dealt with. Edit war apparently can't exist without two people in it. So if someone disruptively (but it does not fit vandalism) edits a page, how can it be restored without putting myself in harm's way? Gsfelipe94 (talk) 00:39, 18 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Gsfelipe94: I'm not sure why he's just randomly commenting on ANEW reports, but I don't exactly blame you for taking the advice. As for the article, honestly, at this point just leave it as it is; I'm not worried about your last edit there, since neither you nor the IP editor broke 3RR.
- In regards to your more general question of how best to deal with this situation, I think the first thing you have to remember is not to panic when you think someone's pushing bad formatting, misinformation, POV edits, etc. into an article. If you revert an edit you percieve as bad, and the editor puts it back in, it's OK if the bad edits stay there for a short time while you work through dispute resolution processes. Just because the other editor isn't following the suggested "bold, revert, discuss" cycle doesn't mean you shouldn't. If you revert, and he puts it back in without discussion, you should start a discussion, and if he doesn't participate, use dispute resolution steps to achieve a consensus. –Darkwind (talk) 03:21, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

Overall, we recorded copy edits to 240 articles by 20 editors, reducing our total backlog to 13 months and 1,656 articles, the second-lowest month-end total ever. August Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 21 through 27 August; the theme was sports-related articles in honor of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Extended confirmed protection
Hello, Darkwind. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.
Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.
In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:
- Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
- A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.
It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

Hello everyone, and welcome to the December 2016 GOCE newsletter. We had an October newsletter all set to go, but it looks like we never pushed the button to deliver it, so this one contains a few months of updates. We have been busy and successful! Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: Nominations are open for election of Coordinators for the first half of 2017. Please visit the election page to nominate yourself or another editor, and then return after December 15 to vote. Thanks for participating! September Drive: The September drive was fruitful. We set out to remove July through October 2015 from our backlog (an ambitious 269 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of oldest articles to just 83. We reduced our overall backlog by 97 articles, even with new copyedit tags being added to articles every day. We also handled 75% of the remaining Requests from August 2016. Overall, 19 editors recorded copy edits to 233 articles (over 378,000 words). October Blitz: this one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 16 through 22 October; the theme was Requests, since the backlog was getting a bit long. Of the 16 editors who signed up, 10 editors completed 29 requests. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all editors who took part. November Drive: The November drive was a record-breaker! We set out to remove September through December 2015 from our backlog (239 articles), and by the end of the month, we had cut that pile of old articles to just 66, eliminating the two oldest months! We reduced our overall backlog by 523 articles, to a new record low of 1,414 articles, even with new tags being added to articles every day, which means we removed copy-editing tags from over 800 articles. We also handled all of the remaining Requests from October 2016. Officially, 14 editors recorded copy edits to 200 articles (over 312,000 words), but over 600 articles, usually quick fixes and short articles, were not recorded on the drive page. Recently poor HBC AIV helperbot5 has been left to do all of the AIV/UAA work all by itself, and it seems to be having some trouble as well (Noticed there's a backlog of requests at UAA of users that have already been blocked). Guideline and policy news
- A discussion to workshop proposals to amend the administrator inactivity policy at Wikipedia talk:Administrators has been in process since late December 2016.
- Wikipedia:Pending changes/Request for Comment 2016 closed with no consensus for implementing Pending changes level 2 with new criteria for use.
- Following an RfC, an activity requirement is now in place for bots and bot operators.
Technical news
- When performing some administrative actions the reason field briefly gave suggestions as text was typed. This change has since been reverted so that issues with the implementation can be addressed. (T34950)
- Following the latest RfC concluding that Pending Changes 2 should not be used on the English Wikipedia, an RfC closed with consensus to remove the options for using it from the page protection interface, a change which has now been made. (T156448)
- The Foundation has announced a new community health initiative to combat harassment. This should bring numerous improvements to tools for admins and CheckUsers in 2017.

- The Arbitration Committee released a response to the Wikimedia Foundation's statement on paid editing and outing.
Obituaries
- JohnCD (John Cameron Deas) passed away on 30 December 2016. John began editing Wikipedia seriously during 2007 and became an administrator in November 2009.

About Dominican DNA:
.. Mr. Darkwind. I've made several attempts to remove the new addition in reference to a dna portion made about Dominicans in the DR page, inly for it to be re-added and eventually leading to me being unable to make edits anymore. The reason I've made several attempts to erase it, is because of the bias info which contradicts findings from several other DNA studies. This study was conducted on 1000 people in certain towns in a few provinces within the DR with predominant afro influence. Studies done on 1,000 Dominican citizens from these towns do not represent the entire population of 10,000,000.

My point, is that DNA shouldn't even be used in this Wikipedia page about DR, because of all the conflicting findings and opinions. This is very divisive within our community and alienates a large portion of the population. Please remove this info, because it isn't a fact. - ^ Here is a link to a written interview in which Jimmy Jam, the original keyboardist for the Time, tells the story that I referenced: http://waxpoetics.com/features/articles/jimmy-jam-interview/ He can also be clearly seen and heard telling the same story on the DVD in the Condensate album from the Original 7ven - as I stated in my deleted correction to the Alexander O Neal page. It is common knowledge and accurate that Jam said what I claimed because there is visual and audio evidence on the DVD. Those who have an encyclopedic knowledge of the Minneapolis Sound and Prince history, as I do, know this to be fact would most likely appreciate the added accuracy and information from someone who was actually present and in the Time.
