City of Austin

Be aware that the Austin page is significantly out of date in referring to such things as the "Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos area" which is in fact now the "Austin-Round Rock" MSA according to the Census Bureau. Round Rock surpassed San Marcos in the early 2000's in population and MSA's are named only for the top two cities. See ["Austin-Round Rock, Tx Metropolitan Statistical Area."] Much of what I am editing is to bring this kind of thing up to date. Dell for example is in the Austin-Round Rock, Tx MSA and not "in nearby Round Rock." Appreciate you not reverting such edits without discussion. Regards, DmartinausTalk 04:20, 3 July 2010 (UTC)

New article and DYK if you care to help improve. I wanted to get it up on July 4th! RlevseTalk 21:38, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your edit

Hello, Dabomb87. Thank you very, very much for your good faith edit of The Basement Tapes. We really appreciate people trying to improve the article. Until recently I was also convinced that website names were supposed to be "publisher," not "work." But then someone recently pointed out to me the following from Template:Cite web:

  • Work: If this item is part of a larger "work", such as a book, periodical or website, write the name of that work. Do not italicize; the software will do so automatically.
  • Publisher: Publisher, if any—for example if the website is hosted by a government service, educational institution, or company. (The publisher is not usually the name of the website, that is usually the work).

This came as a shock to me as it seemed to go against common sense, but as it is written in the Wikipedia style guide, recently I have been using this parameter. I am going to undo your changes, but if you still think you are right please let me know—I'd be very happy to be convinced. Thank you again very much! Sincerely, Moisejp (talk) 22:37, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

No problem; I've always kind of ignored that advice but it's not a big deal either way. It's been discussed before, but I haven't the will to dig up the thread in my archives. Dabomb87 (talk) 23:09, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Admins and features

Glad you're going through it. I'd got rid of that sentence already, but lost the window on my screen; then forgot about it. The page is kind of long, but ... Tony (talk) 16:21, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

No problem. I like what you're doing with that page; it's more interesting to read. Dabomb87 (talk) 16:22, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Done and supported. There are a lot of lists at FLC suddenly, I can barely keep up reviewing them. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 19:36, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

I know the feeling.... But any review is a help, so please, don't overdo it, just contribute where and when you can, everything you add to FLC is much appreciated (and I'm sure Dabomb87 will back me up on that...!) The Rambling Man (talk) 19:41, 5 July 2010 (UTC)
Absolutely. Dabomb87 (talk) 19:42, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Catherine Pollard (Scouting)

New article and DYK if you care to help improve. Up on July 6th, anniversary of the court ruling! RlevseTalk 00:49, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

I don't see why the hatnote isn't needed. You left it on the other Pollard article. Great tweaks by you though. RlevseTalk 00:57, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
The only way you can arrive at the article through the search function is by typing "Catherine Pollard (Scouting)" into the search box. If somebody does that, then they would obviously want to read about Scoutmaster, and would have no reason to want to go to the other Catherine Pollard article. On the other hand, someone may type "Catherine Pollard" into the search box, there is no way of determining whether they want to read about the politician or the Scoutmaster; therefore the hatnote is necessary in that article. Dabomb87 (talk) 01:19, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
Hmm. Ok.RlevseTalk 01:27, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Looks good; interesting lady. Dabomb87 (talk) 03:38, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Masako Katsura

Hey. Thanks for the edits. I'm going to add the format=pdf to the other ones too. And I also see at the documentation for {{reflist}} that it says 3 columns should be avoided (I guess until all browsers can render properly). I was wondering, is there anywhere that says we should prefer the {{frac}} template? I personally think the direct fraction looks much better, and I thought that template was so that we could render fractions that can't be rendered directly, e.g., 4+364. MOSNUM is silent, just saying the template is available.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:29, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

The problem with the unicode fractions (½) is that they are nearly impossible to read in edit mode (even for me, and I have nearly perfect vision), and create accessibility problems for those with screen readers. Though MOSNUM specifically address the fractions, it gives similar advice for the unicode subscripts: "Avoid using Unicode superscripts and subscripts (such as ² and ₃). They are harder to read on small displays, and are not aligned with superscript or subscript characters (e.g., x1x²x₃x4 vs. x1x2x3x4). Instead, use the and tags." Dabomb87 (talk) 04:16, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Though I can read them fine in edit mode (maybe you have your text size set smaller than I do) I don't think whether they can be seen in edit mode is a consideration that weighs equally with appearance to readers, but I certainly see the validity of accessibility problems.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:11, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Round Rock Addition?

Dabomb87: You might take a look at this language for the Round Rock, Texas article. I have a CIO so do not want to add it myself, but I know you do Central Texas edits. I authored a previous long article on the project which was Speedy Deleted due to my CIO, but this is just a small snippet. See: User talk:Dmartinaus Subsection "Need someone to review and "possibly" add to Round Rock, Texas page." where I have the language, refs, and an explanation re the CIO DmartinausTalk 23:49, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

The paragraph looked good to me, so I pasted it into the Round Rock article. Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 00:53, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
A small-minded troll User:Nineteen Nightmares deleted it. I re-added portions with no project name because of his objection to my CIO. DmartinausTalk 17:49, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

UEFA Champions League

If you go to the page above, you will see a FL star. I have tried removing it but I can't. I thought something was wrong with my laptop so I used my other computer; it is still there. Jamen Somasu (talk) 18:08, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Purge your cache; it will disappear. Also, if an article or list is really featured, there will be a notice on the talk page that says so. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:09, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
I looked for that, too. That is why I notified you guys to see if maybe there is some error. Jamen Somasu (talk) 18:11, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Nope, just an old cached copy of the page. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:12, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
Well, since I have your attention for a minute, could you look into this list? It has been around as a FLC for more than two months. Everything The Rambling Man has asked, I have done and more (the first archieve was closed for unrelated events to the article). Could you look into this and promote it or demote it so I can move on and recommend another list I have been working on? Thanks! Jamen Somasu (talk) 18:18, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean; that FLC has been open for 9 days; all FLCs are kept open for at least 10 days, and most are not closed until nearly three weeks have passed. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:20, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
I know and, trust me, I am not trying to use you to go against The Rambling Man since he basically helped me make that list top-notch (a lot better then some of the present FL now). The 1st archieve was closed because I was banned for a short while and since I was gone, the nomination was closed (the closing of the 1st nomination had nothing to do with the list itself). Everything he asked on that first nomination was solved. And this time, I had very little to do since I just carried on from where I left off the fist time.
I am asking you to take special consideration just for this case seeing the circumstances. This has been effectively open for two months. Jamen Somasu (talk) 18:29, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
What do you mean by "special consideration"? The nominations are independent of each other. Besides, you haven't addressed all of the comments in the current nomination. Dabomb87 (talk) 18:45, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

List of Kraft Nabisco Championship champions

Hello Dabomb87, I just want to thank you for helping me make it better and for your timely edits to the list. I will take what you did and extrapolate that over to the other four articles that I will be taking to FL status right after this one, but one at a time like policy dictates. Also, I could not believe this was not done before with the men's major championship articles, which was rather sad till I got on top of it! Thanks.BLUEDOGTN 22:01, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't talking to you. I am talking to the FL Director. For the FL Director...I will be blunt: you have some blatant double-standards when it comes to promoting or not promoting certain lists. I will be reporting this to the proper people on wiki because, honestly, you do not deserve to be a director for anything here. Jamen Somasu (talk) 02:09, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
Please be more specific as to my "double-standards". I do not have a bias against you or the topic of the list. I will ask The Rambling Man to review my closure if you feel my rationale was not satisfactory. Dabomb87 (talk) 03:39, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

Closing FLC

Hiya. You closed Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/FC Barcelona in Europe/archive1 but I think you messed it up. Also, why did you keep reminding me of Jamens Copa America list? He never took any steps regarding the unfair image use? Cheerio, Sandman888 (talk) 22:44, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

No, I did that on purpose so that it will be easy to restart the nomination when I close one of your older noms. As for the reminders, sorry, it's hard to keep track of who's revisited what recently. Cheers, Dabomb87 (talk) 02:19, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Hey, just a quick flying visit, firstly to apologise for not giving notice of my wikibreak (it was something of a rush job for me) and secondly to let you know that I'll definitely be back into reviewing those pesky lists which get unanimous support as of a week today. I noticed Stax's 3,000 hit club needed a bit of a going over, done that, couldn't see anything else really pressing. Closed the LDS list as well, since you voted. Today's feature article help

Hi Dabomb87. I have been thinking of nominating an article for Today's Feature Article, but I'm a bit confused with the process. Can you please explain it to me on my talkpage? Thanks in advance. Secret Saturdays (talk to me) 20:34, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

See WP:TFAR and Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-08-18/Dispatches. Those pages describe it well, but in short, the Featured article director, Raul654, is in charge of choosing Today's Featured Article (TFA). Obviously, an article must be featured to be nominated at TFA, and once an article has been chosen for TFA it cannot be used again. Dabomb87 (talk) 20:45, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

List of Washington & Jefferson Presidents football seasons

Greetings. I'm wondering if I could have your quick opinion on something. Right now, I'm working on List of Washington & Jefferson Presidents football seasons, and I am having problems with the "Conference finish" column. I am unable to find conference rankings for a number of seasons where the team was not the champion. How important is this information to an FLC? I know you can't make any guarantees about how the discussion would go. Do you think that information gap this might be overlooked? Do you think it might be feasible to rename that column "Conference championships"? Would that fly. I'd appreciate any advice you could give me.--GrapedApe (talk) 06:29, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Considering that so far you've found only the times they've finished first, renaming to "Conference championships" sounds like a good idea. Dabomb87 (talk) 13:57, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I will--GrapedApe (talk) 21:40, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Brexx

Don't worry about it. In general, though, if the reason an article is semi-protected is because of socking (you can see it in the logbook under "Logbooks for this page" on the history tab), it's a good idea to ask the protecting admin before proceeding with an editsemiprotected request. In this case because I can see deleted revisions of pages I could see that the request was identical to a deleted request by another sockpuppet.—Kww(talk) 21:29, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Good to know; I will keep that in mind going forward. Thanks, Dabomb87 (talk) 21:31, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Question about quotations and punctuation

I have a question about quotations and punctuation: if in the source the quotation ends with punctuation I keep the punctuation inside the quotation marks per WP:LQ (and per a discussion about this with Awadewit). If I've taken a partial sentence from the source without punctuation, then I place the punctuation after the quotation marks. I'm I doing it wrong? Was wondering about your recent edits to Edmund Evans specifically, but have run into this situation on other articles. Thanks. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 16:40, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

LQ has always been a tricky subject, but based on a previous discussion I've had, I interpret the guideline to mean even if the punctuation is part of the original quoted material, the comma/period is not necessary unless their inclusion alters the meaning of the quote. For example, in "Caldecott drew pen and ink illustrations on plain paper that were photographed to wood, and as Evans explains "engraved in facsimile.", the period does not alter the meaning of the quote, so it does not need to be inside the quote marks (I know, that probably made no sense). Hopefully, Tony1 or someone else who is well-versed in these matters can explain more eloquently. In the meantime, feel free to revert some or all of my punctuation changes. Dabomb87 (talk) 16:46, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
I probably need to have another conversation with Awadewit or maybe Tony about this. I'm not worried about your edits to Edmund Evans, but I'm in the middle of a big expansion of Ezra Pound which will/does have a fair number of quotations, and it's probably best if I get this straight in my head sooner rather than later. I always include the punctuation from the source; if I shouldn't be, then I have a bunch of copy-editing to do. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 16:52, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Whether the final punctuation goes before or after the closing quotes is problematic, and neither "system" can fitly deal with all circumstances. WP's style is towards the outside punctuation". Like that. But it is acceptable to place the dot before the closing quotes where the quotation in the source really does end in a period. What is not acceptable in WP is "this," where the comma is part of the WP sentence, not the quote. If you want a quick and easy way to do it: final punctuation is outside, except that final period may be inside. MoS is not satisfactorily worded, but finding consensus to update it is hard. Thanks Tony! You've just saved me from going through Ezra Pound and fixing. I always put the full stop inside the quotation marks if it occurs in the source - in other words if I'm quoting the full sentence, or the second half of the sentence. Edmund Evans is a bad example, because another editor has been adding to it, and I have a vision problem at the moment that prevents me from seeing well, so I probably missed the mistakes. Can I continue the works on this list?--Cannibaloki 17:55, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
