DOB for Steven A. White

Greetings! I see you added a date of birth to the Steven A. White article, but you didn't add the source supporting the date. Where'd you get it? The source mentioned with the introduction gives his age as of a particular date, but not his birthday. —C.Fred (talk) 22:04, 27 March 2011 (UTC)

Wikipedia April 2011 obit list

I rv Alice Ward again from the April 27 obits. Assuming good faith on your part, you were nevertheless mistaken when you indicated, in your edit summary restoring Ward's name after it was rv, that there is no rule against redlinks. In fact red links are removed from the obit list after 30 days unless a valid article for the subject is created and thus the name is no longer red-linked, which given the result of Ward's AFD, which I initiated, is exceedingly unlikely. H.B. Galbraith

This is a tough one. I found three possible candidates, but the evidence is inconclusive with nothing clearly tying either of them to the Univ. Ariz. Here are some leads if you decide to follow up:
(1) Harry Bradbury Galbraith, born March 30, 1891, was sometimes referred to as "H.B." He was born in New Jersey and had a successful business career in Long Beach, California. In 1900, he was living in Camden, NJ. In 1910, he was living in Long Beach. He became the treasurer of the Buffum's Department Store chain and died in October 1953.
(2) H.B. Galbraith, born 1884 in Pennsylvania. He later had a career as a successful attorney in Brownsville, Texas. He moved to Brownsville c. 1912 and was admitted to the Texas bar in 1914. He died c. 1947
(3) Harry B. Galbraith, born 1877 in Ohio. Served as a school superintendent in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Died June 1, 1970 in Uhrichsville.
There is a reference to an H.B. Galbraith of Arizona playing as a halfback for a 1910 college football all-star team in this article, which suggests that he was probably a player/coach at Arizona.Cbl62 (talk) 02:56, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Don't know if you've paid to access the article referencing Holamer Galbraith. Might be worth a couple bucks. It's quite possible that the name got scrambled in the scanning process. Yeah, apparently around the turn of the last century, it was a popular thing to put a guy's image and his signature in a book that contained a short bio of him. I found a lot more for folks that don't meet WP:N, unfortunately. It's possible that I would run across one for Landis, as his successor was Happy Chandler, also a senator and twice-governor of Kentucky, putting him squarely in my "wiki-wheelhouse". BTW, I'm working on a rewrite of Chandler's article to make an eventual FA run. If your interest in Landis is on the baseball side, maybe you'd like to scan over that part of the Chandler article when it's done. I'll have a lot more on his politics than his baseball career. Yes, I will look at the Chandler article as well, though I don't think the two men knew each other except possibly casually. Lincoln

Thanks for the image adjustment; I notice you are an administrator. The editor Gwillhickers who made the original increase in the image you edited there is also a philatelist and insistent upon placing stamp(s) in the Lincoln article, contrary to the recommendations of FAN reviewers. Lincoln of course draws lots of discussion; I'm just surprised to see such a prolonged argument spawned by the recommendations of FAN reviewers. I have come to my own conclusion that this editor's (Gwillhickers) behavior here meets the definition of tendentious, per WP. Edmonton Valley Zoo

Hi! I was just wondering if you could tell me why you've changed the photo/logo in Edmonton Valley Zoo; I'd only added the new logo a week and a half ago, and I wasn't entirely sure why you switched it out. Not a huge issue, but if I've done something improperly I'd like to know so that I don't make the same mistake again; I've been away from Wikipedia for quite awhile and I'm in the process of re-familiarizing myself with the Wiki-ways! By removing the first image, I believe that it renders the image's file obsolete, as it is no longer linked in any articles. I had used the Red Panda logo in the article, instead of the others, because it was used in several news articles on the Zoo and is featured on their website. That being said, of course, I would guess that they will use the others in advertising as well and they'll all probably see their fair share of the spotlight, so it might not matter in the end. I got sidetracked on a 1969 mockup of the dollar and wound up posting a question at MCQ if you are interested. I think we have a complete set of dollar designs already in the article. I have not done any work on the text of the article, I'm not ready to work on it, I'm just poking around at images. Library of Congress, btw, has several images of Landis as commissioner from the Bain collection so I think things are cool there as well. The block of 92.232.126.106for vandalism I believe is too short. I suspect that IP address is a sockpuppet of Yeahmuan,who you also blocked.

WP:BLOCK states that first offense blocks for IPs should typically be shorter, getting progressively longer as the vandalism continues. Anyways, first offense IPs are usually blocked 31 hours, so my 48 hours is a bit longer than usual. If, though, the vandalism persists, I can protect the page(s) effected. Cox and Bramlette

Thanks for the catch on Cox's death date. It was just a typo. All of the sources I used were published well before his death in 1950. I just happen to be going through the Biographical Cyclopedia at the moment (since it's not online anywhere that I know of), and Cox was the next bio I came to. I'll continue to be on the lookout for stuff about his later life. Maybe the NYT archive would at least have an obit, but maybe not.

As for Bramlette, that's a great find. I've seen stuff from that site before, and they are all about some crazy watermarking. Not sure why they have to be so possessive about PD photos! Good luck with the watermark removal, and kudos in advance if you are able to remove it. Bramlette's article is on my watchlist, so I'll see if/when you replace the painting with the photo in the infobox. Thanks for all your help on articles of mutual interest. I've found and happily added a few editorial cartoons about Macdonald and his times, including one which should make the Canadians who really don't like Americans happy. There is a better signature of Macdonald here. Could you do the honours? I think this one is much better because Macdonald was signing for display, rather than as a routine, and it is much nicer. Harry Ely

Connormah: Jrcla2 and I are trying to figure out if Harry Ely (baseball) is the same person as Harry Ely. My suspicion is yes, but I have nothing solid to tie the Fordham coach to the early Baltimore Orioles player. The NCAA database and Fordham football media guide say the Fordham coach was an alumnus of Yale. This June 1903 New York Times article [2] says "Harry Allen Ely, a Columbia College graduate, will coach the Fordham eleven this Fall." This September 1900 NY Times article [3] mentions "Harry Allen Ely...First Lieutenant...of the United States Volunteers" serving in the Philippines. In 1922, we've got "Harry Allen Ely, Chairman of the Washington Heights Tenants' Association" [4]. Then in 1925, we've got "Captain Harry Ely, aged editor of the Tenant" with a tie to public library at Fordham.[5] If you get a chance to look for anything else to flesh this all out, that would be great. I usually perform the same kinds of edits, some with summaries, some without...apologies for missing this one, but this one is pretty simple, the infobox title parameter by default bolds the name, and common names are usually used in infoboxes. Sure it is a good practice to summary all of them, but you sort of get tired of it after a while, and not every minor edit requires one. Could you cite the article you were thinking of when you estimated Hartwell's birth year? No luck

They didn't bring out any of the stuff you wanted. If it is any consolation, they only brought out one box of what I wanted, and I came home with only five usable images, nothing I needed but too nice to pass up (I'll give you a link when I upload one). First steps on the Generals

I just took a preliminary look at the list, a few I know we have (such as DuPuy) but the ones with asterisks seem to have at least unofficial portraits? Should I just go down the list instead, to simplify? I just want to make sure that I prioritize, although I'm hoping to get the relevant materials out the stacks and just go down the list all at once. I found a few references to Roberts and Cook, so I'm pretty sure we'll have something for them; Cains however, the only reference I saw was to that unofficial portrait already on his page. Unofficial portraits here? Yeah, there are just pictures of them either speaking or at events in uniform here - some are hard to see. Weird on the Carns note, after I emailed the USAF about Carns missing a portrait, they put up one on his official bio, [10] - seems to be scanned from a book or something. He's still alive in his early 70s and retired in 1994, it's weird how there's nothing else on him. Also, there's another portrait at [11] (albeit it's horrible quality). For Otis there's [12] and Gorman has [13] and [14] (though they are all scanned from books as it seems and are not good quality). – Connormah (talk) 01:02, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Doh, I just figured it out. Unofficial wasn't really the right word. The portraits that are up, say on Vicellio's, which seem to have decent portraits, are of them as lower ranked Generals, and you preferred the 4-star if possible. When I meant unofficial, I meant "informal"? (would that be the word for someone not in their dress uniforms?) such as in Meigs', and I think I see why you asterisked them. Anyway, I have done the scans on Carlton, Cook and Roberts and are uploading JPGs now, will link momentarily. I have the TIFFs if you'd like them, but my bandwidth restrictions at work kept me from uploading them direct, so I'll have to bring in my external harddrive on Monday (I really, really need to buy a flash drive). Oh, and about the confusion for Carns, this might be a job for DVIA, which is what I was thinking since his promotion/retirement is right smack dab on the end of our Air Force accession (which means the AF would still have the print and negs in their holdings, and we'd have to talk to them about getting a scan). I thought it was strange as well that nothing came up on him, especially as Vice Chief of Staff, so I'll take another look but it might be because of the timing. Wow, thanks...much appreciated. For, say, Vicellio, his four star was up (in B&W and with scanning artifacts; looked like it was from a B&W book), but I had looked on defenseimagery.mil and found and replaced with better ones - back then I didn't know the insignia, I guess you learn as you go (I'm Canadian, after all..). Some I could find color portraits or better portraits of the four star portraits, some in a different rank (usually Brigadier General/Major General), like, say, Gary E. Luck. Anyways, another question - in theory, should the black in white portraits I linked to above be within the holdings, since they (appear to be) official? Also, newbie question, what is the DVIA? I'd contacted the Alumni association, the Air Force Website, defenseimagery, National Security Council (for Frederick Kroesen), and even the NARA (they however wanted to charge me, since I emailed), basically anywhere I thought would be associated with the portraits. – Connormah (talk) 01:42, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Ah, I see. Yeah, I'm by no means a military, or for that matter photography, expert (my study was in more in diplomatic history), so I'm kind of picking up the nuances as I go along too. Oh, and DVIC (C, not A, whoops) is the Defense Visual Information Center, and they're related to the Defense Imagery website. I'm not entirely familiar with their research procedures for the public, but chances are if it's after 1982, not with NARA, and military related, they have it or know where it is. Also, I think you might be referring to reproductions that NARA was going to charge you for, since we have vendors that do our reproductions (including digital) for us. However, NARA does do limited research (three specific topics a month) via email and provides photocopies through the post.

With regards to your question, the short answer would be yes they should be with us. The way it works is that if there is a photograph taken by a federal photographer, it goes through what's called a "records cycle" (usually about 20 years) when it's held by the agency of origin. At the end of that, it's then either classified as "significant" (historically, politically, legally, etc.) and transferred to our custody, or otherwise is destroyed. With these types of images, as a series of related images that the branches did for almost every general officer (i.e. the official portrait), and since they're not within the last 20 years or so (most of them), they are more than likely in our custody. However, and this is the big caveat: is that perhaps the photographer took many shots, and only one was considered the "official" or "alternate" etc. portrait. Since the Air Force already has their "official" copies, they discard the rest after a records cycle. But say then the photographer keeps a copy of all his shots, and down the line gives a copy to his buddy, a military historian, who then writes a book and includes the shot in his book (as they are public domain, unclassified views free to all to use). It wouldn't be held by us, in those types of situations, since it never got to us as an official record. However, that would be an admittedly rare occurrence, but it does happen as researchers and book writers often want to find "unseen" views, and will go well beyond just writing the records agencies. Hopefully I explained that well enough. It's a convoluted system at times, but with over 30 million views in our holdings, it's a necessary one.

As for your question about how to tackle this, I can think of no other way than to just go down the list - if you have a better way, please do do it in any way you feel is best (I had most of the ones that had driven my crazy to find portraits of at the top anyhow). All are Air Force and Army (don't think there's any Marine Corps or Navy in there), FYI.
