AfD Doug Bell edit

Hey I saw you changed your vote on the AfD page, which is fine. I agree that the comments I left on the page (beyond the initial Comment comment) should have been left on LuLu's talk page. I was really just responding to his comments—as you have perhaps already discerned, I am somewhat annoyed with him regarding recent interactions, the AfD he put on the bio page regarding me being a minor part of that. He got under my skin a bit, but I responded in the wrong forum.

I really am fine whether the page about me stays or goes as long as the reason behind the decision is based on Wikipedia conventions and not because of some petty pissing contest between Lulu and myself. (Note that Lulu, aka David Mertz, has his own bio of questionable notability and questionable vanity that survived two AfDs, the latest on no consensus after Lulu editted the AfD 37 times.)

The reason I am leaving the note for you here is because of your vanity assessment of the bio I created. I only created the bio after finding earlier this month that I was referenced from several other articles on Wiki (articles which I had nothing to do with creating). At the time I created the bio, I was just trying to "help out" at Wiki by providing information on a referenced subject with which I had some familiarity. I purposely only put minimal stub information in the bio because I was only putting minimal bio information that was relevant in the context in which the article was being referenced. It really is not a vanity thing--if it was I probably would be making it into a puff piece like David's bio. I hope if you look at what I included in the bio, and when you consider that I only created it because of existing references, that whether or not this should be included on WP, you would agree that it is not a vanity piece. I could have listed articles I have written or that have been written about me, etc., or other products I've participated in creating (coincidently, the Encyclopædia Brittanica CD, which does not include an article about me, being one of them) but then it would, IMO, cross over into being a vanity thing. If a bio about me is something that belongs here, then I'll leave that to someone else to do.

I only recently, as of this AfD, even became aware of the Wiki policies regarding bios and notability. I see that creating or editting your own bio is strongly discouraged, and that makes sense to me. It also makes sense to me that the subject of the bio should not interject himself into the discussion of notability, and it was a mistake for me to have done so. I only ask that if you choose to cast a vote, you base it on WP standards (or your interpretation of them) and not on the pissing contest between Lulu and me that spilled over into the AfD. Thanks for reading, – Doug Bell talkcontrib 00:39, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the reply you left on my talk page. I just wanted to repond to one thing you said:

I think I would have had voted to keep the article if someone else besides the article's subject (you) had gone to great lengths to defend it.

Yes, it is unfortunate that my comments ended up appearing to be an attempt to defend my bio page when the intent was simply to provide a rebuttal to Lulu's campaign against me and not as justification for or against the bio page on me. Lulu is not exactly an impartial participant in the discussion either at this point.

As I have said, and as I mean, I'm fine with leaving the decision to the WP process. The process does rely on somebody doing the research to determine notability so that others have some basis for forming a decision. While that somebody should not be me, and really, I would feel weird providing it even if requested, I wonder if the absence of anyone doing the research should in and of itself be justification for voting to remove an article. It's just frustrating that the only one providing "perspective" and "research" is the same person interested in having the article removed for unrelated reasons. To be fair, Lulu should recuse himself from the discussion as I have.

To be honest, I would never have thought of my accomplishments meriting inclusion in an encyclopedia. However, WP has a tremendous amount of what I consider non-encyclopedic content covering items of contemporary culture. It was in this context, and only because I was already in the encyclopedia that I ever thought to start the bio. Oh well, this has all been a distraction from what I was trying to do on WP, which was to contribute to creating an encyclopedia, so back to that. – Doug Bell talkcontrib 06:14, 29 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • I was Disabled in a 1993 (Coma)/ and am very slowly recovering. It's tough going out sometimes, though with friends I still do. I have a few supportive friends.
  • I am an "Unenrolled voter." Democrat/ Republicans, I don't care, whoever serves makes my life better in the long run I vote for!
  • Avid reader. Has collection of many hundreds of rare books. Especially Science Fiction and Fantasy.

I am what I am I'm strongly opinionated about disabled peoples' rights and jobs for American citizens who have trouble finding minimum wage jobs in my state today and support Universal health care, I would be dead if I did not have it. I am an idiot about Internet social skills. I hope that the Immigration Reform bill will protect disabled citizens who wish to work like myself first before considering allowing new people to come here. I was searching for an internet forum to be my outlet to express my needs, but found that Wikipedia is not best suited for that. I'm brushing up on Wikipedia's rules of conduct, and slowly starting to begin contributing again.

Current book and CD I own hundreds of rare books

Grace Ross edit

Hi. I wanted to let you know I started a page for Grace Ross, and I'm pretty sure you're the communications director for the campaign, so I thought I'd let you know. I summarized the bio form the campaign site, removing potentially POV statements, but I thought you might be able to provide additional relevent information. Alex 13:29, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

List of State Green Parties: adding external links edit

I noticed that you initated the list of state green parties. It may be a long time before all state parties have individual wikipedia pages. In the meantime, and to facilitate the development of such pages, would it be OK with you to add external links to the web pages of the state parties?

Proposed format

or simply

Other ideas are welcome.

ArbCom elections are now open! edit

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
