New Editors

I just noticed that you blanked your page. I love an empty canvas!!! I've become a Wiki Guide (nice work if you can get it) and one of the other guides has started a page asking for views on the on-going and varied situation regarding New Editors. As you might remember that was (and still is) one of my early discoveries ..ie..the mistreatment of young editors. As I remember you also had some ideas on the subject. The page is at Wikipedia:Wiki Guides/Welcome new users. Check it out, friend! TRA! Buster Seven Talk 04:19, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Hey Buster .. how ya doin buddy? I'll pop over and take a look here in a bit. Glad to see you're still keeping the home fires burning, and watching out for the new guys. — Ched :  ?  04:34, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Friendship Barnstar

Your Friendship Barnstar, which I have always felt was the best ever, may start to get some increased use. I recently gave a well-deserved one to User:Hydroxonium and he placed it onto the Wikipedia:Barnstars page. I also just discovered User:Kaldari, one of your fellow admins and gave him one for use in his WikiLove project. Your wonderfully creative barnstar and its positive message desrves to be wall-papered all across wiki-back-pages. TRA!Buster Seven Talk 05:45, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Very cool .. I'll have to check it out. :) — Ched :  ?  10:32, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Re: Same old, same old

Hey Ched, going...well, better than it has been, but not particularly good today (just got back from a rather distressing interview). I see you are slowing working your way back here! Good good good. Huntster (t @ c) 20:42, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Getting back up to speed - Questions

OK ... several things seemed to have changed, although unfortunately not some of the drama levels - (note to self: stay away from comments at AN or AN/I for now). But that does lead me to needing to get back up to speed on how things get done around here.

1. At the time I was last active we were discussing something called "Flagged Revisions" ... I'm now seeing something called "PC" (Pending Changes). Is this something that is in place? .. or just being discussed? Is is what FR evolved into? If it's in place and being used, might I ask where (I'll guess at BLP areas), and where's the link to the best place to get up to speed on this stuff?

2. Apparently there's been some changes to references and cites too. Now using some form of in-line citation thing I read. Anyone want to drop a link to get me up to speed on that?

Sidenotes: I see Rlevse has left, sorry to see that whole thing go down like it did. Glad to see lots of familiar faces too. I see OM appears to be back, I'm guessing the community is glad about that, as I remember him leaving as I was coming in. Couple peeps are now admins. that weren't before .. some good - some I'm not so sure of. A few good editors still here .. a few still missing as well. Oh well .. all in all, Hi folks. Prolly make a lot less noise than I did back when, but hope to see ya all around. — Ched :  ?  17:45, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

1) Not familiar with FR, but Pending Changes was tried and not well recepted, from what I can tell. Significant issues with reviewers accepting changes without really looking at what was changed. Not sure what the current status is, but deployment is on hold for now: Wikipedia:Pending changes.
2) List-defined references is just a way to reduce clutter inside the article. I love love love it. See second example at WP:LDR and other stuff at Help:Footnotes#List-defined references. It's completely optional for use, but I think the reduction in clutter far outweighs any negatives.
Sidenotes) I know nothing about any of this, as I don't monitor the drama boards. Hehe. Huntster (t @ c) 19:58, 29 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for the links Hunster, that's a good start! Re: the dramaz boards .. yea - I'll read, but not interested in getting involved in em. Just like to know what's going on is all. — Ched :  ?  01:04, 2 April 2011 (UTC)

Boomerang

Even aside from the BLP issue, the joke kind of stopped being so funny when the guy got sent to prison. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 09:34, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Yes, whatever became of me? :) I've tried to quit a few times, but that feeling doesn't last long, especially if I can get into some new baseball topic. :) Regarding that one user, there's an obvious conclusion, or at least suspicion, to draw. I'm sure the checkusers are scrambling even as we speak. :) ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 10:10, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi

Murder of Eve Carson has been nominated for AFD again.--BabbaQ (talk) 20:12, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

ummm ... thanks for letting me know? Looks like it'll snowball keep again. — Ched :  ?  07:21, 10 April 2011 (UTC)

Anglo Pyramidologist

I prefer to notify user when I start an SPI but since his page is protected I cant post it. Would you drop the SPI template on User talk:Anglo Pyramidologist? thanx The Resident Anthropologist (talk)•(contribs) 22:18, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

Hey, I'll give it a shot - let me try to find the right template. Do you have a direct link to that by any chance? — Ched :  ?  04:36, 12 April 2011 (UTC)
I looked at WP:SPI, but don't see his name on the list? — Ched :  ?  04:39, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks

The Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar
Too much nonsensical stuff from them anon IPs at that talk page of Airbus A380 is driving me nuts, think I'll go for a break and thanks for calming things down with your words on ANI. Best.

--Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 09:01, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Hey, no problem Dave, just didn't want to see it turn ugly. I know it can get frustrating dealing with stubborn new editors at times. It's like raising kids all over again .. lol. Cheers and best buddy. — Ched :  ?  19:38, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
  • The fact that anon IPs are often shrugged off or not held accountable is something of a worrying trend, the nit-wits just don't seem to be able to copmprehend that and oftentimes, a few would step on their fellow editor (hint, hint...) perhaps in their ladder for RfA? Think maybe we should make these nit-wits read up on WP:OWB for some frightening insights. Anyway, thanks and best. --Dave ♠♣♥♦™№1185©♪♫® 19:44, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
Cool! .. thanks Dave. And yep .. they can really push your buttons at times. Sometimes I think they do it deliberately because there just doesn't seem to be as much "gray area" with the anons. as with the registered users. — Ched :  ?  20:28, 13 April 2011 (UTC)
LMFAO .. yep!! — Ched :  ?  20:52, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

AIV

Could you take a look at AIV, please? I have some serious vandalism going on and am in need of a rangeblock quickly. - NeutralhomerTalk • 05:26, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

OK, I'll have a look, but I'm not real familiar with "range" blocks - but I'll give it a shot. — Ched :  ?  05:29, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Vandalism is also coming from User:71.161.44.88. If rangeblock is unavailable, I would request semi-protection for a week. - NeutralhomerTalk • 05:37, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank ya, Sir. Much appreciated. :) MuZemike semi-protected the page for a month. I am going to sail off for the night. Could you keep an eye on my user talk page. If there is any vandalism, you have my permission to semi-protect the page. Everything else in my namespace is already semi-protected. - NeutralhomerTalk • 06:01, 18 April 2011 (UTC)
Glad I could help. — Ched :  ?  06:03, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

That RfA reform thing

Kudpung has asked me to 'nudge' some people .. as I'm an idle get, I'm just going through the entire Task Force list so my apologies if you didn't need a nudge! You can slap me about over on WP:EfD if you like :o) Straw polling various options: over here - please add views, agree with views, all that usual stuff. Pesky (talk) 12:50, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

I'll take a look and post something in the next day or two. Thanks for the heads up. (and don't ever worry about "nudging" me. I miss so much that sometimes I have to be nudged to look at my talk page. :)

Incivility

I didn't quite understand your comments at WQA. Are you suggesting that this wasn't uncivil; or that an AFD isn't important enough to be civil at; or that I should just put up with persistent incivility? Hyperdoctor Phrogghrus (talk) 08:13, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

It's not that I didn't see some questionable civility issues, but more a matter that: 1) I also saw what I considered to be a fair amount of baiting as well, 2) I'd much rather attempt to be a voice of calm and reason than to just jump on the block button. The people involved are content contributors, and some are rather tenured and prolific as well. I certainly didn't see what I considered anything that quite rose to the level of personal attacks, although the mood seemed to be headed that way. (and I preferred to attempt to diffuse the situation rather than escalate it by choosing sides or issuing blocks).
Many people here are very passionate about their efforts and their understandings of our policies and guidelines. That is not a bad thing in-and-by-itself, but it can lead to (all too often) heated discussions which easily escalate into rhetoric that results in blocks, bans, and hard feelings. I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not, but there have been many times that the civility policy has been met with very conflicting views. Some argue that bluntness, and "telling it like it is" are simply the preferred method of communication. Others would debate the "we must always be nice" side of the issue. To be honest, I just didn't see that the entire conversation was worthy of the amount of discord that was displayed there. I'd rather that everyone simply state their view of the "keep/delete/merge" discussion according to policy as they see it, and leave the acrimony out of the equation. On one last note: There's a saying in my neck of the woods; "Be careful when you get into a pissing battle with a skunk, because sometimes bystanders can't tell which is which." Cheers and Best, — Ched :  ?  08:39, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I was rather under the impression that I had been taking efforts to be civil, to keep within policy, and to address the issues of trying to improve the encyclopaedia -- I was also under the impression that TT rather enjoys being sarcastic, winding people up, pushing the limits of acceptable behaviour and outright personal attacks. I feel seriously discouraged by the fact that you don't seem to see any difference. If I behaved like TT in real life, I would pretty soon find myself in the boss's officwe facing the ominous question "Are you really happy here" I foolishly allowed myself to waste a lot of time yesterday trying to deal with TT's behaviour and do you know what -- I just don't care any more. Hyperdoctor Phrogghrus (talk) 09:36, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
  • (technically out of sequence post, but I can only respond to one at a time)
I can certainly understand your feelings HP. To be sure, TT's passion for the project has often brought out a very dry and sarcastic wit of his that has netted him his share of disagreements. He has been with the project for a long time now, and is not afraid to but heads with some of our most esteemed colleagues. He also has a fair understanding of our policies and guidelines here, and isn't afraid to argue his perceived viewpoint. Indeed, I have often disagreed with his views, but seldom find it worth the aggravation to engage in a protracted debate over a web-page or the site in general. For my own personal choices, I simply try to edit where I can, and let others sort out what is of value, and what is not. It's very very easy to get so passionate over things here, but other than our own moods and frame of mind, they often have little impact on real life.
To be honest, I'm somewhat of an old fart around these parts, and I often just don't "get it" when some of the "youngers" drift into the current speak of the day. FWIW, I did drop by and ask him to settle down a bit, and he did seem quite agreeable to that. I guess my view at this point is that some things were said that could have been said better, but it's perhaps best to leave it in the past. I DO wish you all the best here, and please always feel free to drop a line or question anytime you have the desire. Best of luck, — Ched :  ?  09:56, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi again Ched, I've just noticed that Hyperdoctor here seems to be (obliquely) accusing me of harassment now. As we've only ever interacted on the AfD page, I'm bemused as to how this could be remotely possible, and would appreciate if you could either issue a caution as per WP:AOHA, or just generally keep an eye on the situation. Cheers, ╟─TreasuryTagpresiding officer─╢ 09:46, 25 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't think anyone is accusing anyone of anything TT, in fact it seems to me that he is resigned to just dropping the entire matter. I think it's likely best to just let the matter rest, see how the AfD finishes out, and move on from there. He felt the subject met our WP:N guidelines and voted as such. He should be allowed his views, and the closing editor will ascertain the validity of each camps arguments. In fact, I note that the user has declared a "wiki-break", and I think it best to allow him some peace and quiet. As you know, things can often get heated here - but not all contributors embrace those things. I found him to be well spoken, and a pleasant sort to be honest, and I do hope he returns soon. We can't all share the same beliefs, goals, and desires here, but with work, we can learn to be tolerant of one another. Cheers — Ched :  ?  10:11, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm sorry to say that I don't care to learn to be tolerant of personal insults, personal attacks, false statements and bad faith. Goodbye. Hyperdoctor Phrogghrus (talk) 11:01, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
HP, I do hope you will return after a short break. It's a very large and worthwhile project here, and I have no doubt that your contributions would benefit out site. If I was not firm enough, or authoritative enough, then allow that to be my failing, and not that of the communities. — Ched :  ?  14:06, 25 April 2011 (UTC)
