Citation for Bud Powell

It's not a valid citation if it results in a red-link error in the References section. Note 46 requires the title and author of that article to avoid the error. If you think that piece of information is vital, then you're free to track it down. I don't because it's just a quote from someone praising someone else. That's not the kind of material I consider encyclopedic and not worth my time to dig up.

Recently reverted edit on Austin, Texas, article

Hello Brunswicknic,

The description you supplied in reverting my recent edit does not make sense to me, because it has nothing to do with why I placed a comma in the first place. The comma belongs there.

I placed it there in full compliance with more than one Wikipedia Manual of Style guideline. Specifically MOS:DATE, which states:

"A comma follows the year unless followed by other punctuation that replaces the comma"

and also MOS:DATECOMMA, which goes into further detail:

"Dates in month–day–year format require a comma after the day, as well as after the year, unless followed by other punctuation. In both cases, the last element is treated as parenthetical."

With all due respect, I am sure that we share the common goal of wanting to make Wikipedia a better place. It is in that spirit that I request you undo the reversion you made, restoring the comma to where it is supposed to be. :)

Comments on botanical nomenclature technicalities

In Calamus bousigonii, you noted some differences between how IPNI and POWO list the species and its subspecies.

Subspecies with an epithet identical to the species epithet (C. bousigonii subsp. bousigonii) are called autonyms. Autonyms are considered to have the same authority as the species, and if the authority is given it would the species (C. bousigonii Becc/ subsp. bousigonii), but authority is often omitted. Autonyms are sort of like Schrodinger's Cat; in a certain technical sense, subspecies and variety autonyms are considered to have been automatically published simultaneously with the publication of any new species. In a more practical sense, the autonym doesn't come into existence until somebody describes any other subspecies or variety.

IPNI doesn't record autonyms, but otherwise aims to include every published botanical name (presumably autonyms are excluded as their "publication" is something of a metaphysical question). IPNI does not aim to provide any opinion on whether any published name should be accepted as a taxon or regarded as a synonym. While IPNI is a very reliable source, it essentially only proves that a name exists. It usually is not worth citing IPNI in Wikipedia articles (however, when there a different spellings of the same name in the literature, IPNI a good source for the authoritative spelling).

For "Pierre ex Becc." vs. "Becc.", there's some (out of date) background at Author_citation_(botany)#Usage of the term "ex". Ex authorship has a long history in botany, but has recently been deprecated, so "Becc." is preferred. "Pierre ex Becc." indicates that Becc. was giving some credit to Pierre when Becc. described the plant. There many reasons why somebody might have wanted to give credit like this; one situation might be somebody dying, while leaving an unpublished manuscript describing a new species, with a colleague subsequently making the publication. For those external readers, this is over a comma in a sentence in Barleria prionitis. "I disagree with your writing style, therefore you are illiterate, I am correct" seems to be the reasoning. I'm sorry, I disinterestedly disagree with the correction, but I strongly disagree with the rationale. Communication is achieved with either version. Language is a many-varied thing. @Ashleyyoursmile: AYS, I'm sorry, it took a while for me to work out what you were saying. I had no idea what copyvio or earwig was. This is an article on a plant species and its varieties. I have only used the references you cite to name the plant species and varieties and synonyms and give the authority of those taxa. The only "cut down or rephrase" possible is to ignore the named varieties, their synonyms and their authorities. These are important and necessary parts of an article on a plant taxa. Please see WP:Wikiproject Plants for guidelines on plant articles. I suspect that Earwig is inappropriate for biological articles. I do thank you for your work to make WP a better place. Brunswicknic, I understand what you are saying. Since copyvio constitutes a very important part of any Wikipedia content, unfortunately it is not possible to ignore this. Will it be possible to remove some names of books from the "Further reading" list? If you compare the article and the sources that I've mentioned above, the overlap is particularly huge for only this portion. I see. I do find this strange. These are authoritative databases used as the authorities on plants of the world at present. My quoting their citing of current definitive floras of the world and regions appropriate to a taxa is not something that copyright violation seems to cover. I do acknowledge the source of these citations, in other words a reference on the page, and so again the copyright violation of citing book names seems peculiar. I do think that an over-application of "copyright violation" seems to be occurring here. Thank you for suggesting a compromise, I will make some editing that may be acceptable to you. Please not that I have reverted your edit. I quoted the authority on the genus talking about the variability of this taxa, a long quote, but very notable in plant sciences and well-said, a refreshingly honest take on the difficulties of differentiating species and varieties. Your desire to make Aporosa octandra more readable by violating the WP:MOS about bolding is noble, but there is a sad truth; hardly anybody is going to read the article. Zhōngguó

What's with this "Zhōngguó" business? In English it's "China", and putting "Zhōngguó/China" in plant articles is jarring to the reader. Abductive (reasoning) 06:10, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

I sort of figure that 1 quarter of the world deserve to have people call their country by the name they (mostly) use themselves. It is like Myanmar and other places, the old English names don't reflect the nation or people. I use the double construction to reduce confusion. I think it's important that we recognise nations names, though as a British citizen I personally will use only 'Britain', not G.B. or U.K. I also respect Cambodians, the vast majority of who find "Kampuchea", the official names, still to painful to use and prefer Cambodia/Cambodge. I see your reasoning with the reversion, but the Wikipedia Manual of Style has a very clear statement on this, in MOS:CENTURY:

Do not capitalize. (and the examples which follow on that page are given in red text to indicate that they should not be done.)

Indeed, if you look at 21st century, the only capitalized instances are those which appear in proper titles.

Accordingly, and with respect, I ask that you restore the edit as I put it, because it is in full compliance with the Manual of Style.

Predatory journal are not first class journals

I don't know on what grounds you consider the phytojournal to be 'first class', but it is not. It's a predatory journal. The Uddin reference should be plenty for the information. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 13:40, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

Please see talk on the article talk page Talk:Tetracera_sarmentosa. You have not demonstrated that it is a predatory journal, you assert this, but offer no evidence. I did not say the journal itself is 1st class, but that it is cited in 1st class journals. That would seem to indicate that the article and journal have some merit. at Gympie Pyramid read the source. Yes, it's borderline, but it is not a book, as your ridiculous edit summary claims, but a set of remarks in a local Shire history journal. Bucida buceras

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Bucida buceras a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Terminalia buceras. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases for registered users, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you.
