Articles for deletion nomination of Stealin' (Bob Dylan bootleg) edit

I have nominated Stealin' (Bob Dylan bootleg), an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stealin' (Bob Dylan bootleg). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 23:40, 21 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Rough Guide to Bob Dylan edit

Hi! Thanks for your recent contribution to the "Mr. Tambourine Man" article. I have reformatted the inline ref that you provided in keeping with other refs used in the article, because myself and a number of other editors are attempting to push this article up to Featured Article status. I just wondered if you could confirm that the edition of The Rough Guide to Bob Dylan that you cited was the 2nd edition with the ISBN number 1-84353-718-2. I don't own the book myself and it would be a big help if you could let me know whether it is page 268 of this edition of the book or another edition that you are citing. Many thanks. --Kohoutek1138 (talk) 18:22, 29 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks for taking the time to clarify this for me. It is very much appreciated. --Kohoutek1138 (talk) 08:54, 30 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

File source problem with File:Bob Dylan 1966.jpg edit

Thank you for uploading File:Bob Dylan 1966.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 10:52, 4 July 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. multichill (talk) 10:52, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for File:Bob Dylan and the Band Tour 1966.jpg edit

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Bob Dylan and the Band Tour 1966.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. File permission problem with File:Bob Dylan w-his electric guitar.JPG edit

Thanks for uploading File:Bob Dylan w-his electric guitar.JPG. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ww2censor (talk) 03:43, 13 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

World Tour, 1966 edit

Hi BootleggerWill, you ask about reliable reference books. You probably know the following are highly rated:

  • Heylin, Clinton (2003). Bob Dylan: Behind the Shades Revisited. Perennial Currents. ISBN 0-06-052569-X.
  • Sounes, Howard (2001). Down The Highway: The Life Of Bob Dylan. Grove Press. ISBN 0-8021-1686-8.

This one is interesting because it is a detailed chronological account of Dylan, enabling you to check concerts & dates:

  • Heylin, Clinton (1996). Bob Dylan: A Life In Stolen Moments. Book Sales. ISBN 0711956693.

On the whole Bjorner is accurate. One problem is that when shooting for FA, other editors may question whether Bjorner is a reliable source. Please cite Bjorner in proper format, eg [1], rather than just inserting the raw link. I looked at the 1966 World Tour in Heylin's A Life In Stolen Moments against Bjorner just now, and I was surprised to find there seem to be concerts missing from Bjorner. February 19, Ottawa. February 20, Quebec. February 24, Philadelphia. March 3, Miami. March 11, St Louis. March 12, Lincoln NE. March 13, Denver. March 24, Portland OR. March 25, Seattle. April 22, Adelaide. April 23, Perth.

Just looked at the Bob Dylan World Tour 1966 article and many of the concerts seems to be there. I could try to clean up the list of concerts when I have time, but unfortunately I'm busy with The Basement Tapes and with life. Looking at the article, I must admit I don't like the writing at all. I find this wildly over-written and subjective:

Dylan's new attitude toward the audience, his critics and his style, however, were now beyond their command or comprehension, and so was his music. His ordeals with the press by this time had reduced him to a complete dissociative state during interviews and the general public. Only on stage could he let his ideas run free. But now he was different. He was the iconic psychedelic prophet of things to come; shouting surrealistic parables atop the mercurial carnival sounds of the band and gesturing wildly. Unfortunately the uproar over his new style would alienate the majority of his initial audience and many of his friends in the music industry (most notably Phil Ochs). This, and his recent marriage—which was, by this time, slowly unraveling, lead him to an increasing dependence on amphetamine, barbiturates, and alcohol. In the Feinstein documentary, he speculates (as many others have) that the motorcycle crash of July 29, 1966 was staged, and it was actually Dylan's bitterness toward the press and fans which caused him to withdraw into Woodstock, New York.

Why did Highway 61 reach number 3 on the charts and Blonde On Blonde reach number 9 on the charts if he had alienated most of his fans? They were more successful than his previous albums. This stuff is not consistent with the more reliable biographies, Sounes & Heylin. I think the ref to his marriage unravelling is ludicrous. How do you know? Feinstein's speculation is odd. All the evidence suggests Dylan had some kind of accident [2] but he then obviously capitalized on it to withdraw from the demands of touring and get some R&R. The version of events recounted in The Basement Tapes is I think more sober and more accurate. Mick gold (talk) 17:08, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Well I'm glad you don't like the material either. You should be bold & delete anything you're not happy with. Mick gold (talk) 17:34, 20 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Hi, BootleggerWill. Sorry to get back to you so late about your request for sources for Dylan's 1966 tour. To be honest I don't know very much about his 1966 tour and don't have any good sources myself. All I can tell you that Mick gold didn't tell you above is that Robert Shelton's No Direction Home has a wee wee bit of info in Chapter 10 "One Foot on the Highway . . ." He doesn't mention many specific dates, but does talk about some of the cities played in certain time periods which could be a reference for comparing against other ones. I don't know if it's accurate, but according to Shelton, Dylan played in Tacoma around the time of his Seattle and Vancouver shows, which I don't see in your list of concerts. I haven't looked carefully, but there may be other differences or confirmations of some of the info you already have. I'm not sure if this is a help, but it is all I know. Take care. Moisejp (talk) 14:34, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Dunno if you can use this as a source on Wikipedia (?), but certainly as an informal source for yourself to track down other sources with, but dylanstubs.com has lots of ticket stubs and posters from the 1966 tour. There are posters for a March 27 show at Spokane Coliseum, March 13 at Denver City Auditorium, neither of which are on your list. In addition to his 4/20 show in Melbourne, he appears to have played on 4/19 there as well. There may be others, I didn't look too carefully. Moisejp (talk) 15:19, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
Nearly all of the concert dates presumably missing from Bjorner are not missing. I don't have Stolen Moments but have checked Bjorner against other sources, including Shelton, Sounes and Heylin's Behind the Shades. The only dates Bjorner doesn't list are Feb-19 Ottawa and Feb-20 Quebec. Also, Bjorner correctly gives Feb 24-25 for Philadelphia. I presume Stolen Moments does as well, but disagree that Bjorner missed Feb-24. Allreet (talk) 15:23, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
I missed a discrepancy. Bjorner lists Mar-24 Tacoma WA and Mar-25 Seattle WA, but doesn't include Portand. Mick indicates Mar-24 Portland and Mar-25 Seattle are covered by Stolen. However, DylanStubs has a stub for Portland on Mar-23. In sum, the Portland concert is not covered by Bjorner and apparently the date is incorrect in Stolen. Also note, I have no idea whether Stolen includes the Tacoma date. Allreet (talk) 15:47, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply
Please ignore the above. I've done a more thorough analysis and posted the results on Talk:Bob Dylan World Tour 1966. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.81.88.228 (talk) 19:31, 17 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Dylan on tour in 1966 edit

BootleggerWill, you seem to be responsible for adding this picture and caption [3] to the Bob Dylan article.

Purpose: To display Bob Dylan's use of drugs, as described by his expression. This description can be found in the caption below the picture.

Have you read WP:BLP? Don't you realise that this kind of caption writing will get you banned? Mick gold (talk) 12:56, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

You can obtain isbn numbers from amazon. [4] Mick gold (talk) 22:29, 22 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Or you can find it in the Bob Dylan article [5] ISBN 0-8021-1686-8.
Hi BootleggerWill, I've edited Bob Dylan World Tour 1966 for reasons discussed here [6]. Mick gold (talk) 17:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
Question for you: do you think there should be an individual section on drug use during that time? After all, it was influencing Dylan pretty heavily at the time. I agree, it was rather overwritten, and I should've noticed it earlier, but I do believe that there should be some information about drug use in that article. Do you? Thanks! The Gates of Eden (Talkin' Gates of Eden Blues) 03:45, 27 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
I do NOT think there should be discussion of Dylan's drug use. Please let us not discuss this issue any more. Mick gold (talk) 15:31, 28 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

reverted attribution of "Biograph" track to your earlier information edit

I am relatively new to Wikipedia, so please excuse my unfamiliarity with procedures and customs. You may or may not know that another user "corrected" your listing of "Before The Flood" as the source of the "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" track on "Biograph," noting that the "Biograph" version was not live and matched the length of the "Blonde On Blonde" version — to which that user changed the attribution.

I just compared my CD tracks of "Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)" from "Blonde On Blonde," "Before The Flood," and "Biograph." The "Biograph" version quite clearly is an edited version of the 1974 Dylan/Band live recording, with the initial 39 seconds and closing 8 seconds of audience ambience removed, which is why the edited length is virtually (and, more importantly, coincidentally) identical to the studio version on "Blonde On Blonde."

I therefore changed the listing back to what you had entered, which was correct.

Dylan bootleg article edit

Hi, BootleggerWill. I noticed you did a lot of work on the Dylan bootleg article and thought you'd be a good person to run this by. I'm trying to de-orphan The Masked Marauders and felt a blurb in the bootleg article would be appropriate. One possibility is to insert a one- or two-liner, though I don't think that would do it justice. The alternative is a short draft I've written (five sentences), possibly under the heading "Faux bootleg":

The release of the Great White Wonder gave birth to a fake bootleg that began as a gag concocted by editors at Rolling Stone magazine. The album, The Masked Marauders, was supposedly recorded during a jam session between Dylan, Mick Jagger, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. A review of the non-existent album ran in Rolling Stone on October 18, 1969. The write-up sparked numerous inquiries from readers, and a band was hired to record first some singles, then a full album. Released in November 1969 under a Warner Bros. subsidiary created as part of the stunt, The Masked Marauders topped 100,000 in sales.

Overall, I think it's a great story, but then again, as the primary editor I'm a bit prejudiced. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 01:10, 6 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Excellent suggestion. I just hate to trammel others' good works and didn't want to bull ahead. Not that anyone has a franchise or anything, but it's good form to take into account the conceptions of others. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 22:15, 11 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
