Valid Reference?

Hi Biosthmors, I hope you're doing well and I have a quick question for you. I was working on one of the poorly referenced portions of Bronchitis and came across this reference which I can see the original editor used this content but did not add it as a reference. However, my question is whether or not this is a valid reference/reliable source. I wouldn't want to use it myself if I were writing that page. For one thing, it says "Copyright © 1995 Johns Hopkins University". 1995 is not in line with WP:MEDDATE. Biosthmors (talk) 21:40, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

Okay, glad I checked in the first place then. I'll have to delete a little bit of what's there because an earlier editor copied straight off of that reference. Thanks for the introduction on my talk page

The Wikipedia Education Project is an adventure for me. I filled out the WEP form and hope to get an online ambassador to help this semester. I am not sure that I'll be able to get an on-campus Ambassador, but with a class of only 6 students and all the available resources, I think we'll be okay. I plan to incorporate WP editing into a much larger class next year (Sensory Neuroscience) and am hoping to develop a good framework this semester. I very much liked your suggestions on WP:ENB for Basic Requirements, but some of the following discussion talked about taking away support from classes that don't meet expectations. As we professors try to muddle our way through the ways of the Wikipedia world, we need more support, not less, if we are not fully meeting expectations. When making substantial curriculum changes, it always takes more than one or two semesters to get it right. I really appreciate your offer of support.Biolprof (talk) 16:06, 2 January 2013 (UTC)

I just received an email officially including me in WEP Spring 2013 from Jami Mathewson with Richard Jenson as my regional ambassador. Since his interest is history, I think it would extremely helpful to have your biomedical expertise in addition to your experience as an ambassador for the neuroscience course and I mentioned this in my response to them. I have spent quite a bit of time the last day or so lurking around the WP education pages and resources and have started to cobble together a course page in my sandbox[1], by cutting and pasting from the 12 week generic syllabus combining with elements from Joan Strassmann's Behavior Ecology course[2] and another Molecular Biology course[3] that I found through the WikiProject:MCB page. It's obviously got a ways to go still. I'd love to talk with you about it. I don't have Skype on my computer, but my husband might on his. I've got Facetime on my new iPad mini (Happy Holidays to me :-) ) and chat. And of course there are always cell phones. Tomorrow morning might work well for me. sorry, i'm a bit confused. You have provided a correct quote and then changed it to have a difference appearance. So in fact you have added original research into the quote. Medrs says 'nationally recognized expert body'. Certainly ghana's fda is their nationally recognized expert body. Please correct me if i'm wrong. The History of Bronchitis

Hey Biosthmors, I've never written/researched the history of a disease before really and I've never put such a section on to wikipedia. Looking up the history of bronchitis I found an article on the person who distinguished it from pleurisy or pneumonia named Charles Badham (physician) and this reference was there: Robinson, Victor, Ph.C., M.D. (editor) (1939). "Charles Badham". The Modern Home Physician, A New Encyclopedia of Medical Knowledge. WM. H. Wise & Company (New York)., page 72. Sounds like a book to me, would that be acceptable to use? I don't even know if I can get my hands on text from that book either to actually write some text about his discovery. That being said, I also found an article from 2009 (I am not certain if it is a review article though I believe it is) and I think if OhanaUnited can get me a copy, that it would go nicely in the article. PMID 19343614 would be a great addition to the article. The history section doesn't need to rely on review articles like the sections that are based off of biomedical research. History sections, society and culture sections, and economics sections don't need MEDRS as a guideline. The book doesn't seem to contain lots of info. While it should be reliable, in an ideal world we'd have access to better sources and we wouldn't need to use it, methinks. Can you give me a for instance for a better source? I'm trying to secure access to that paper in the meanwhile and continuing to look for other sources. And yes, I had no idea about some of the wikipedia policies and the way articles are supposed to be sectioned (I didn't realize guidelines existed for those though it makes sense that they exist) so the article is coming along. It needs more pathophys, history, epidemiology, and some other touches but it's getting there. Is it okay to use textbook sources for the more technical aspects of the pathophys? How much detail should I be going into for that section? Some of the cited papers discuss the pathophys but I'm not sure how much is really appropriate and I didn't want to risk it being overly technical. TylerDurden8823 (talk) 02:44, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

(ec)Well, whatever you did to find the other article worked! I don't have access to research databases at the moment. Try searching the database of a local university library. Try to write at least a good paragraph (or at most maybe three) for the pathophysiology section. Try to keep it as approachable as you can for the lay-reader, but it's going to usually be heavy with molecular and cellular biology content. It's just the nature of the beast. Quick update, so, it turns out that the nice paper we wanted to include is English-abstract only and the entire paper is in German and it doesn't seem like I can get my hands on a copy anyway. Phoebe said that she could get access to the one I'm going to link in a moment. Is a 1991 paper okay if it's about the history and not about current medical information about diagnosis/treatment, etc. about the disease? That won't violate any of wikipedia's protocols I imagine, right? Or am I mistaken in my assumptions? Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

• Special:CampusAmbassadorProfile
• Special:OnlineAmbassadorProfile

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors ^connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.

Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

In regards to diabetes mellitus on WikiProject Medicine/Good article goals for 2013: I think, I misunderstod the concept a bit: I do not think I will have the time to work on this article since I am doing a lot of work with the Anatomy project (also I do not feel that I am quite qualified since I am an undergradute). As you say we did not meet, but you seem to have become a great editor in this time. Nevertheless at this moment I want to re-start here little by little and see what happens. My idea is to improve those articles I was most familiar when I left, mainly the multiple sclerosis and also maybe the parkinson's disease. The two are FA but some sections are a bit out-dated. I'll contact the med project if I need extra work :-)

Lesson of the events at BCA

What has been the lesson we've learned at the breast cancer awareness talk page? When Charles came along to fix the article, he was not very well versed in wikipedia rhetoric and recitation of policies. A group of 3-4 other editors used the policies to almost make it seem like Charles' arguments were completely bogus and wrong. However, once other people came along, one by one each new editor agreed with Charles' views on the article (although they may not have agreed with his methods and may have found his manners off putting). As illustrated by the past few months, they all made the exact same arguments that Charles was making all along, but they were citing policies to supplement them (3 examples - opinion should not be presented as fact, too much negative criticism in the article, we should use footnotes).

Lesson learned: just because somebody isn't that great at proving their point on wikipedia does not mean that they are wrong.

Thus, can you help preserve my good faith edit to the article? You seem to have no problem finding sources. Given the pattern of recent events, Charles' edits probably have some merit to them. Instead of citing policies (ie WP:MEDRS) for deconstructing Charles' edits, can you please try to WP:PRESERVE them instead? Thanks, Charles35 (talk) 23:34, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

The cancer talk page

I would have a very low threshold for removing posts on the Talk:Cancer page that seem to be basic rants about non-traditional cancer treatment being underrepresented. WP:TALK sets clear parameters for using talk pages as discussion forums. The current IP poster has tried to start three different threads! JFW | T@lk 20:36, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

I agree that it is overkill! But they mentioned one good point too. Plus I think we represent mainstream medicine and if we can meet the alt types in the middle sometimes maybe they'll be more likely to go to the doctor when they are sick and really need to. First effort

I have a general question about rather technical articles like this. Should I write it for a reader who doesn't have any background knowledge - to a completely naive reader? I thought, I don't need to explain theory behind my article as then I would veer off the main topic. That's why I put hyperlinks to other articles.

What's out of character? My opinion that the society/culture section might be inappropriate? I imagine such cultural references are already covered on the male bra page, which is in the see also section. We can open the topic up to a larger wikipedia population if you wish but I still believe that the whole bitch tit thing is not really appropriate for an encyclopedia. Or are you referring to my push for C class? Do you think it wasn't justified? I'm not trying to pressure you to rate it what I want, I would want to know why it is remaining start class unless the original rating of start class was grossly off and it should have been a stub. Hi Biosthmors. After reading the WP:SS it makes more sense to me how a summary style is more preferred versus the mock-up version I created; the mock-up is too detailed and you present a good case that not all countries may present with variations within the specific facets. Additionally, Doc James prefers having articles broken up into subtopics by country rather than disease state by country, since this allows countries to be compared on one page versus being spread out. In addition to my fellowship project, I am very interested in helping bring article to GA status, specifically within infectious disease. As soon as I decide which articles, I will update the potential GA for 2013 that is a top 500 medical article list. BTW, do you happen to know of reference management software that is being used within the Wikipedia community to supply secondary resources to the community? Thanks. Online ambassador for Neurobiology course

Biosthmors, it would be great to have a second online ambassador for my undergraduate neurobiology course. This is my first time doing this so I am learning a lot along side my students. Medical English

Hi!

Thanks for contacting me. I gave a short talk about Wikipedia in foreign language classes at my school in Mexico back in July. This semester Im teaching a class in Medical English and I have been introducing the idea of working with Wikipedia as a way to improve language skills. The last class sessions (I have two groups) were about exploring the community and getting a sense of who edits Wikipedia. Many of the students found your userpage along with that of Doc James and others, but Ive been holding off on having them contact anybody principally because I dont want any one Wikipedian to get 60 messages all of a sudden! :D

Our next two projects are to upload photos related to the field in Commons (we do that on Wed) and then work on translating a good article from English Wikipedia to Spanish Wikipedia. We will be discussing what makes a good article, using analytical skills we learned earlier in the semester reading some journal articles. After that, I will get a feel for their level and interest to see if we continue with writing articles from scratch. This is something of an experiment as although I have taught using Wikipedia before, I am trying new tactics based on what went well and not so well before. Gynecomastia

Hey Biosthmors, I see you made a few changes on the gynecomastia article, it looks great, but I do have a question. Should we really be using that 1997 Lancet reference? Seems too old to me to use given what I've heard on wikipedia before. I'm not even sure if we should be using that given that it's making a claim that is medically related but not from a peer-reviewed medical journal review article. Anyway, let me know what you think. Drug warnings (black boxes and contraindications)

Thanks for your welcome note. Per your suggestion, I made a few edits to the page. While I perused the WikiProject Medicine, there were so many topics I got overwhelmed, so I wondered if you could once again offer advice. One area where I find wikipedia information lacking is in the warning information for older drugs. Even though a drug may contain a black box warning, that warning may not be included on the wikipedia page - even though it is the first google "hit." If I wanted to add such warnings (straight from the label), is there a section of WikiProject Medicine where I could read about the proper method to add this information? Seeking advice about merging content into my main article

Hi, Biosthmors, I noticed that my main project article for Signal Transduction class has a couple offshoot articles that look like they could be merged into the main page, and I was looking for some advice. Do you think I should bother undertaking such a task, or is it exceedingly difficult? For reference, my main project article is Glutathione_S-transferase, and the offshoots are Glutathione_S-transferase,_C-terminal_domain and Bacterial_glutathione_transferase. I'd of course like to be thorough, but I'm no expert in Wikipedia policy and politics, so if you think it's best to leave such a task to a more dedicated and experienced Wikipedian, I would be happy to focus on adding content to my own article. There is an IP address making some odd and unexplained changes including some large unexplained removals of information (such as the entire lead section). Deep vein thrombosis

Hi Bios I was reading a little the super article about DVT and I'v noted something a little strange and illogic. In Pathophysiology section reference N. 10 says exactly the inverse: platelets are very important in clot formation "by activating blood platelets, or by increasing the number of platelets...". Another thing is the inflammatory reaction as primum movens... I know there are some papers about that but how to explain the traveler's DVT? I think that we need to talk about these papers but without much relevance. Lets time give some light over the subject... inflammatory reaction with so many macrophages exist in an attempt to re-absorb clots not to form them the problem is: they are there and we can't see the clot formation and macrophages coming to fix the issue. Thank you for the link. I had read it. Is true that vascular endotelial cells release coagulation factors when under traumatic situations (mainly vein EC): is a normal protection of life and the reason we can't repair vein valves. The article is a little confusing (I don't have enough knowledge about immunology) but they think to have found a possible molecular mechanism for clinical linkage between different types of thrombotic and complement-mediated disorders. They talk about severe immunologic situations where we can find thrombosis and hemorrhage concomitantly. Nothing is uncovered... yet unfortunately. In auto-immune situations we can find everything... our knowledge about our immune system is yet really poor. But this work can open a new research pat for hypercoagulability syndromes. By the way: why hypercoagulability is redirected to Thrombophilia?? Hypercoagulability syndrome is a better title for it, is a more universal title, is a syndrome, thrombophilia seems lots of platelets and is only one reason for hypercoagulability.
