Giants
Do you happen to have any information on why several Negro League teams were called the "Giants"? Was it in reference to the New York Giants? Or maybe the Cuban Giants? Or maybe just that they liked the name "Giants"? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 03:54, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I read somewhere that for barnstorming teams, including "Giants" as part of their name may have been a sort of code to signal to fans that they were a Negro League team, since they often traveled to small towns to play white semipro teams. I'm not sure if that story is true, but it sounds plausible. BRMo (talk) 04:02, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I had made an assumption in my History of baseball team nicknames (which is pretty well documented but not totally), and figured it had to do with the New York Giants. The editor who deleted that comment said something similar to what you've just said. So either it's a common rumor, or it might have a kernel of truth. Or both. :) I wonder if anyone has really explored the topic for the Negro League teams. Some things are obvious, such as the Birmingham Black Barons, or the Atlanta Black Crackers (how's that for an oxymoron?) but a number of them seem kind of obscure. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 04:06, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I haven't read anything specifically on the topic of Negro league team names in general, but I would be happy to contribute if I happen to know something about the name of a particular team. BRMo (talk) 04:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
- I did most of the work on the article a couple of years ago, and it's been pretty much dormant since then, with occasional tweaks by other users. Just now I looked up the Pittsburgh Crawfords, which is kind of obscure until you know where it came from. The Kansas City Monarchs and the Homestead Grays were pretty famous. I wonder if there was any particular reason KC called themselves the Monarchs, beyond simply liking the name? The Grays were originally based on Homestead, PA. The Grays part is what I wonder about. Was it based on their uniforms? Or was there someone named Gray in the organization? I also wonder how far I should go with nicknames. Quite a few Negro League teams came and went. I'm thinking it would make more sense, at least initially, to focus on the "main" ones. Of course, I can simply add them without explanation, but I'd prefer to find the source, if possible.
