Biohabitats Quality

Hi Anne! I was glad to see that Biohabitats page go through. I've changed it in several different ways over the last couple of years. While it is fresh in your mind, I'd be more than happy to hear any suggestions about how to improve the article - I took out a lot to keep it down to just the news-driven pieces, but I can see why it was classed as a "start".Bioecojess (talk) 13:20, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

Hello Bioecojess. If you are connected with this company, you should avoid editing it now that it's in the main encyclopedia, and limit yourself to leaving suggestions on the talk page. (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest)
Most articles start out as either "stub" (if very short) or "start", and become more sophisticated with time. I can make one suggestion, and that is to find an image or two to enhance the page. This could be a photo of the company headquarters, or of one of the parks it designed, etc. These have to be ones that you took yourself or own the copyright so that you can donate it to Wikimedia Commons, so don't upload your favourite photos, only ones you don't mind being reused by others.
I don't have any more time to work on this article now that it is up to minimum standards - I have these others that I am trying to bring along. —Anne Delong (talk) 15:46, 11 October 2016 (UTC)

Dave Broadfoot

Hi Anne - North Vancouver is an ambiguous link. Why did you remove the disambiguation needed tag? PKT(alk) 15:11, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

PKT, it looks like a wrongly assumed that there was a North Vancouver somewhere else in the world, and that I had fixed the problem by adding "British Columbia". If you think the tag should be there, by all means replace it.—Anne Delong (talk) 15:49, 3 November 2016 (UTC)
Done. There are actually two "North Vancouver"s out there in BC. They are contiguous, but they're separate communities. Please have a look at North Vancouver to see what I mean. PKT(alk) 16:21, 3 November 2016 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Great Little Box Company

The article Great Little Box Company has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable company. Article makes no claim other than it has won some dubious awards about being a great place to work and is the largest box-maker in western Canada. Awards must carry weight. Winning a business award from the local chamber of commerce is not regional recognition. References are about funding, acquisitions, and other recycled press release material. What is innovative about this company? What is interesting about its methods of making boxes? Lots of companies have on-site gyms. Exchange rate lifts all exporters. It has 250 employees and it makes boxes. It is not the largest box manufacturer in Canada -- it only claims to be the largest in western Canada.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Glrx (talk) 01:32, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Glrx, I have removed the tag. It doesn't matter if you or I find the company interesting or important; what matters is that authors of several books as well as business journalists in the national newsmagazine Macleans and the Canada's second largest newspaper by circulation, The Globe and Mail, find its management style and successful growth interesting enough to write about. If you disagree, please take the page to WP:AFD.—Anne Delong (talk) 03:21, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

Amazing coincidence. An uncle of mine used to live in a very high end condo in Concord Place. I visited him when he lived in Toronto in the early 90s!! New 10,000 Challenge for Canada

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada/The 10,000 Challenge is up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Canada like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Canada but fuelled by a contest such as The North America Destubathon to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. I would like some support from Canadian wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile! Cheers. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:55, 22 November 2016 (UTC)

  • I'm starting to work on the Destubathon, and I'm already involved in the 50K challenge down here in this strange little country to your south. I've already 'destubbed' an Alberta article, and I'll add it to the 10K Challenge, but I was wondering if Canada has anything like a {{WPUS50k}} banner for the articles. Any such thing? Also, if there're any maple leaf-esque banners to put on my own page I'd like to show one off after I contribute ~10-15 destubs or new articles. Merci, Bill — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bill McKenna (talkcontribs) 19:46, 2 January 2017 (UTC)

Curious, given your bluegrass passion

What do you think about the handover at the helm of A Prarie Home Companion to Chris Thile? Rsvp if you wish. Cheers, Le Prof 73.211.138.148 (talk) 18:49, 30 November 2016 (UTC)

Hello Le Prof. My interest in Bluegrass is mostly in playing it and attending festivals. I am sorry to have to report that I have never watched that program. However, I guess it was inevitable that the original host would eventually retire. Thile is certainly an excellent mandolinist; I guess time will tell if he makes a good variety show host. The article needs some improvement, though.—Anne Delong (talk) 19:02, 30 November 2016 (UTC)
He certainly is an outstanding instrumentalist, and echo your "time will tell" on everything else. (It is one thing to be a tried and true storyteller, it is another to have to find and schedule them.) Have a look—I don't know if this will fly, but I am arguing to make a new article for the program, under its new leadership and changes in emphasis and format, so both sets of editors can focus on one thing—the old, on improving that article, the new, on getting it right from the start. Look at the article attached to this Talk. I am hopeful for a quick approval. Cheers, and maybe have a listen to Chris at this new gig. Le Prof (who honeymooned along the Blueridge Parkway). DYK for New York State Insurance Fund

On 3 December 2016, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article New York State Insurance Fund, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the New York State Insurance Fund once mistakenly categorized puppet making under rubber manufacturing instead of theatrical production? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/New York State Insurance Fund. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, New York State Insurance Fund), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Dear Anne,

Thanks for your suggestions on the Denham Jolly article. I will certainly do a redraft with them in mind. Also, please feel free to make any adjustments that you feel are necessary. Thanks again and all the best, PeterPmcfarlane23 (talk) 14:24, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Dear Anne,

Thanks for your help and l will do a revision in line with your suggestions. Please also feel free to make any adjustments you might think necessary. Thanks again for your help and all the best. Peter Pmcfarlane23 (talk) 14:31, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Pmcfarlane23, overnight your article was accepted by a reviewer (Yay!), but then another editor added a PROD tag to the draft (Oh-oh), mainly because of the promotional tone, but also because a some of the references were not mainly about Jolly but about peripheral topics. I added some new refs that were specifically about him and rewrote the tone a bit, expanding it so that it's not mainly about the radio station. Any editor (you, for instance) can remove a PROD tag, which is intended for articles which everyone agrees should be deleted (which obviously you don't).

By the way, most of the references just refer to him as "Denham Jolly"; articles are usually titled with the person's most commonly used name. Should it be moved?—Anne Delong (talk) 15:03, 11 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Floatjon. I don't usually add ISBN numbers to articles manually, but I do use the "Wikipedia citation tool for Google Books", so I presume that it has been creating the malformed ISBNs. John Biggins

Thanks for creating/rescuing the page on John Biggins. I couldn't detect much/any of the page that I created a while back, and which got rejected for some reason I never did understand. Did you see it and incorporate anything? I'd like to know so I don't have to try and recreate and of its content (it's gone now). Beowulf (talk) 04:27, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Hello, Beowulf. Here's what happened: You submitted your draft in July 2015, and is was declined because it contained opinions. An encyclopedia article isn't like a book review; you can't say things like " His exploits, somewhat styled after Conan Doyle's Brigadier Gerard, and a little after Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey...". Now, if a recognized literary critic had made that comparison, you could say "Harkness G. Warblehead, literary critic for the Shwingleville Monthly Review, compared his characters to those of Conan Doyle" or some such, because that would be a fact. Then you would need a proper citation to the appropriate issue of the Review, with page number.

Now, I see that you made some changes, but you didn't press the large blue "submit" button to get an updated opinion, so the page sat there for a long time without anyone paying any attention to it.

Eventually, one of the reviewers, going over old abandoned drafts, took a look at it, and realized that in the meantime another editor had made a page about the same person. Since we can't have two pages on the same topic, he "redirected" the draft to the mainspace article. What you are seeing there is the other editor's work, plus some of mine.

Now, the usual process in cases like this it to take any sourced information from the extra draft and use it to improve the article. HERE is a link to the text you wrote; I moved the parts I considered appropriate into the current article and mentioned your username as the originator. I changed it to blend in with the text that was already there, and left out any analysis, etc. I hope you find this acceptable, but of course you are free to edit it (as is anyone else).—Anne Delong (talk) 07:07, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, Anne. That's seems to explain things very well and I really appreciate your work to arrive at a very satisfactory solution. Beowulf (talk) 06:13, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Are any of the following people notable?

If you find any sources, you may add them to the corresponding draft pages listed here. 103.6.159.84 (talk) 14:18, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Two of these topics already have article, so there is no point in having drafts about them.—Anne Delong (talk) 14:24, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Oh, they don't. The links just redirect to articles on unrelated subjects. 103.6.159.84 (talk) 16:56, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Hmmm.. I see that. In any case, I am in the middle of two quite large projects, Here and Here, and I don't think it's likely that I will come across anything related to your drafts while working on these, but who knows? Most of them are very short. I prefer to (1) pick my own topic and write an article from scratch, or (2) fix up a languishing draft that someone has already put substantial work into.—Anne Delong (talk) 18:02, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
Oh okay, thanks for your consideration. Actually, the reason for this request was that I believed you had access to some sources such as newspaper archives which aren't accessible to the rest of us. 103.6.159.84 (talk) 19:13, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
True, I am carrying Newspapers.com, but the logged in search doesn't allow copying the citation information, whereas '"Charles L. Poor" "Navy League" site:newspapers.com' in Google gives you OCR text and copyable citation data. Only occasionally if I can't read the headline do I bother to log in. —Anne Delong (talk) 21:53, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Editor of the Week seeking nominations (and a new facilitator)

The Editor of the Week initiative has been recognizing editors since 2013 for their hard work and dedication. Editing Wikipedia can be disheartening and tedious at times; the weekly Editor of the Week award lets its recipients know that their positive behaviour and collaborative spirit is appreciated. The response from the honorees has been enthusiastic and thankful.

The list of nominees is running short, and so new nominations are needed for consideration. Have you come across someone in your editing circle who deserves a pat on the back for improving article prose regularly, making it easier to understand? Or perhaps someone has stepped in to mediate a contentious dispute, and did an excellent job. Do you know someone who hasn't received many accolades and is deserving of greater renown? Is there an editor who does lots of little tasks well, such as cleaning up citations?

Please help us thank editors who display sustained patterns of excellence, working tirelessly in the background out of the spotlight, by submitting your nomination for Editor of the Week today!

In addition, the WikiProject is seeking a new facilitator/coordinator to handle the logistics of the award. Please contact L235 if you are interested in helping with the logistics of running the award in any capacity. Remove your name from here to unsubscribe from further EotW-related messages. Thanks, Kevin (aka L235 · t · c) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 05:19, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Anne Delong.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC)

New Page Review needs your help

Hi Anne Delong,

As an AfC reviewer you're probably aware that a new user right has been created for patrolling new pages (you might even have been granted the right already, and admins have it automatically).

Since July there has been a very serious backlog at Special:NewPagesFeed of over 14,000 pages, by far the worst since 2011, and we need an all out drive to get this back down to just a few hundred that can be easily maintained in the future. Unlike AfC, these pages are already in mainspace, and the thought of what might be there is quite scary. There are also many good faith article creators who need a simple, gentle push to the Tea House or their pages converted to Draft rather than being deleted.

Although New Page Reviewing can occasionally be somewhat more challenging than AfC, the criteria for obtaining the right are roughly the same. The Page Curation tool is even easier to use than the Helper Script, so it's likely that most AfC reviewers already have more than enough knowledge for the task of New Page Review.

It is hoped that AfC reviewers will apply for this right at WP:PERM and lend a hand. You'll need to have read the page at WP:NPR and the new tutorial.
