Suggestions edit

I was veering rather off-topic over on the T&F proposal page so I came here. I'll emphasise what I said there, this may sound a bit harsh and/or bossy, but it is only intended as genuine, constructive advice from someone who's been around a bit. Your energy is admirable, it just needs channelling a bit. In particular I really think you need to get more experience of interacting with WikiProjects before you start rushing to create yet more of them. It's quite normal for people to pursue specialist interests within a general project - for instance I've done a lot on clan battles within the Clans project. It may sound patronising (it's not intended to be), but it feels like you don't appreciate how unfocussed you are right now with this desire to "do something" with the T&F articles. With more experience, and by collaborating with others, you should be able to come up with something specific and feasible within existing Projects without the bureaucratic burden (and ghetto effect) of a new Project.
So I've some suggestions for you, which hopefully will help give you the experience you need to get where you want to go, and hopefully maximise the effectiveness of your contributions to Wikipedia. Just looking at your existing workplan :

  • Monifieth - the best thing you can do right now is to keep cracking on with that, perhaps looking at Category:FA-Class UK geography articles for inspiration of sections to include and how to lay it out. When you think you've taken it as far as you can then invite people from WP Scotland and UKgeo to peer-review it, kick it around and then go for WP:GA. Obviously it's not the best candidate for collaborative improvement as it's already in pretty good shape... I hesitate to deny you the opportunity for further collaboration <g> but it could do with a bit of general copyediting just to help the flow of the English - removing one-sentence paragraphs for instance - and to improve/expand the lead in particular, and you can always do with more refs, make sure no paragraph is without at least one ref. The WP Physics cheatsheet is a good source of ideas for the more technical aspects of preparing for a GA review, in fact some of their stuff goes beyond GA stuff. Conversely you shouldn't follow it religiously, a town article probably doesn't need overview or Lists sections for instance, but you're really not that far off already.
  • You're right, it's a very important task to de-red-link Outline of Scotland. However I know from bitter experience how difficult those big general articles are to write, particularly on your own. You'll find them much easier to write, and you'll do a much better job, if you leave that for a wee while. Not least because it's the sort of thing that should be done with a high level of collaboration with WP Scotland rather than as a solo venture. Just trust me on this one... <g>
  • I must admit, speaking purely in terms of your development as a Wikipedian, I'm not wild about the River City stuff. Pop culture articles are tough to do well, and not just because they're a moving target that is also very vandal-prone. Just looking at them through the eyes of a potential GA reviewer, they tend to have relatively low-grade sources as references, there's few free images to illustrate them with, and they're quite hard to write in encyclopaedic tone. But if that's what you enjoy, then go for it - we're only doing this because it's fun, right? Just as an outsider though, I'd rather see a really great article on River City - GA equivalent even if you can't get it through GA review - than lots of stuff about individual characters.
  • Don't regard 10,000 edits as a target, it's nothing to be proud of. <g> More seriously, that kind of thinking can end up distorting your editing, one of my favourite edit summaries is "Complete rewrite" (eg this diff ). Talking of which, if you ever find yourself up near Inverurie or Aberdeen with a camera, there's some reqphotos on Talk:Battle of Harlaw... Anyway, I'd focus on quality rather than quantity, if you must count something then number of GA's is probably the best measure IMO.
  • The other stuff is nice to have, but mebbe not a priority - certainly I would hold off an audio version of Monifieth until you've got a stable GA version to record.

Anyway, going back to some suggestions for where to go with the Tayside thing. Once you've got Monifieth submitted, I'd be looking to take another local article from stubbiness to GA, hopefully relying more on the Projects for support (policy clarifications, peer review etc). It's much easier to write about finite "things" - towns, objects etc - and I might go for something pre-20th century as it's much easier to find good quality refs from eg ex-copyright books on Google Books. Maybe a local biography, or a battle, maybe even Arbroath Smokie! This is just to get you more used to a collaborative way of approaching articles, and seeing the GA process from a different perspective - town articles are a bit atypical in some ways.
Then I'd go for a really tough assignment - getting Angus to GA. Region articles are tricky for one person to do because they are so wideranging, which asks a lot of your knowledge and referencing ability, and they're just hard to get the English right because they are potentially quite open-ended. You can get up to C/B on your own, but for GA you're probably going to need to collaborate a lot, to get the references and for copyediting.
After that, see where you want to go. I'd suggest "towns in Angus" as a potential WP:Good topic? In spirit at least, not sure the world really wants an overview article on the subject just to tick the GT box (unless you could get the main Angus article to count), but that would be a real achievement for both you and for Wikipedia readers, in fact those articles are already in pretty good shape. Some of them are already at GA and from a quick skim only Brechin is in need of significant work. Perhaps you could race User:Kilnburn to see who gets GT first?
Hopefully this little lot will get you into the swing of editing in collaboration, referring to Projects on matters of policy etc and indeed helping other people out on the Projects. More importantly, by creating a bit of "buzz" on the Project with requests for peer review and the like you'll accumulate a network of contacts to help you through the bigger tasks like Angus and the Good Topic. In particular Kilnburn could make a useful mentor as someone who's doing something similar but is further ahead. You'll then be in a much better position to work out what you want to do with other Tayside articles, perhaps in some more systematic way, or to work on the Outline red links. But for now, it's really not that complicated, you just want to get Angus and its major towns up to a reasonable standard (ie GA). That's plenty to be getting on with... HTH - I didn't mean to write to quite this length, apologies! Le Deluge (talk) 13:26, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wow! That's a lot of really great suggestions. I will definitely take all of that on board. Getting Monifieth to GA is a real target of mine. I need to focus on collaborating with more editors to acheive things. Andrewmc123 13:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
No worries. Don't sweat though if you don't get floods of people racing to help on your articles, particularly in the summer when most people have better things to do than sit in front of a computer. That was one reason I emphasised GAs, you should be able to get a GA on a "finite" subject by yourself, so it's an achievable target even if you don't get much help. Wikipedia's weird like that, it's collaborative but a lot still depends on individual graft, and you can't rely on collaboration even if that's the ideal and is needed to do the best work. But yep, keep on with Monifieth, it's really not that far away from GA.Le Deluge (talk) 14:22, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply
To be honest, I didn't think that there would be a flood of editors helping out with Monifieth! Andrewmc123 15:32, 8 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

My revisions to the WENDY JAMES wiki are public knowledge and in print on the official sites where they have been read by many many people.. edit

My revisions to the WENDY JAMES wiki are based on HER own entries on her official sites.

Including pictures of the said events.

They have been public for months and months.

It is even enshrined in her official biographical material.

I do not feel there is any justification for reverting it.

No justification at all.

And considering no member of "the general public" seems to be able to get their entries through to this particular wiki..

(not one single member of the public just wikipedia editors making technical adjustments for a long long time now..what's that all about?)

I am forced to assume this has all the hallmarks of an attempt to impose a "virtual" PROTECTION LOCK (which has been phased out officially) by the back door.

I defend the entries I made.

They are sourced and verified by the terms of Wiki Pillars.

Simple as that.

Everything else is very subjective POV on your part.

86.43.215.174 (talk) 01:43, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I had to undo your edit to the page as in correspondence with Wikipedia's policy regarding Biographies of Living Persons, any unsourced or poorly sourced contentious material should be removed. If you wish to add the content back, please do so, but you must provide reliable sources with it or it will be removed by another editor.
I would advise against citing any of Wendy's official sites (see Reliable sources) as they are not third-party independent websites. I am sure there are other reliable websites with sources available to cite. The Five Pillars do not determine whether an article is sourced or verified. Wikipedia policies determine this (in particular WP:V).
I disagree that I have a "very subjective POV" as, being completely honest, I have never heard of Wendy James before and do not have an opinion on her. I am only helping to enforce Wikipedia policy. Andrewmc123 02:10, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pending Changes edit

I am puzzled about the trial Pending Changes feature. I have been watching Gbenga Daniel, which has been getting some vandalism lately. A few days ago I asked for PC-1 protection for the article, which was put on. I noticed a fairly trivial change (nothing to do with the recent vandalism but not really correct), decided to "unaccept" it, and nothing happened. Then I saw you had accepted the reversion - but the history just shows your change, not my attempt. How does this work? Aymatth2 (talk) 02:21, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Accepted revisions do not appear in the page history. Anything to do with reviewing of the page will appear here. If you're still stuck, I will try to give more help but I'm reasonably new to the reviewing process myself.Andrewmc123 02:29, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks - I think I see how it works now. It makes sense that review activity does not show up in the page history, only the changes themselves. The PC process seems a bit complicated though. Aymatth2 (talk) 14:16, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I do agree that the process is a bit complicated. Andrewmc123 16:07, 29 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

River City - Plans! edit

Okay, I've had time to think over and we have to sort out the River City articles, and theres new characters and even though there arn't many references for articles, I figure we could work something out, by the way how far does your knowledge go back, have you been watching since the start in 2002? Have you got any ideas for the articles? --AcidBrights (talk) 17:00, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've only been watching River City since mid-2007 which is a bit of a problem when I have to write about the original characters but I have a bit of basic knowledge. However, the episode archive has a lot of the older episodes. Andrewmc123 18:51, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, well have you got any knowledge of the series producers on the show from that time, as we can add introducers then of the characters. I was thinking we could have one article with all of the present characters on, forget about the past characters for now, as we don't have a lot of the information and we need to make the article to a high standard with storylines etc.--AcidBrights (talk) 20:14, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately not. The only producer I can remember is the current one. Sorry. I think that is a good idea. There is definitely more information readily available on the present characters than the past ones. How would we lay out this article? Andrewmc123 20:40, 12 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

It would be in the style of List of EastEnders characters (2010), it would be like that and we could list all of the characters in the sections with name, infobox, bit of an intro and theres some history of the characters on the river city, and we could work out dates htey first appeared by that episode guide yeah?--AcidBrights (talk) 07:32, 13 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

I see that you started the Climate change in Scotland article. Any chance of doing a Climate change in the United Kingdom article? It currently redirects to the associated category. I tried to make a bit of a start a while back but my attempts were blocked before I could get anywhere. See Talk:Climate change in the United Kingdom for some history. Now that things have cooled down (forgive the pun!) a bit we may be able to get somewhere. Cheers. -- Alan Liefting (talk) - 02:21, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

I wouldn't be too keen about writing such a sensitive article considering the problems it has had in the past. Also I don't feel that I am knowlegeable enough in the area to be able to write a substantial article without breaching WP:NPOV. In all honesty, the Climate change in Scotland article is not entirely complete and I used the other 'Climate change in ...' as a template to write it. Thank you for the offer but at present I will have to say no. Andrewmc123 16:07, 11 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hope we can work together doktorb wordsdeeds 15:05, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

Yeah sounds like a good idea. I've completed Dundee Council and Angus Council and I've made a start to Aberdeenshire. There are quite a few different templates though and I don't know which is best. There is the one used in Glasgow City Council election, 2007 or Angus Council election, 2007 for the candidates. I prefer the latter simply because it is less time consuming but I don't mind either. I was looking back through 2007 pages and there seems to be a mixture. Andrewmc123 15:11, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ah cool, cheers for that. Can you make sure (because I almost forgot) to add the links at the United Kingdom local election, 2012 page? I know what you mean about the templates - I groaned when I saw the one used in Glasgow 2007 but got into the rhythm of editing it so time wasn't too slow. I think trying to settle on a standard would be more trouble than its worth. I prefer the "Irish election box" templates, for the record doktorb wordsdeeds 15:38, 1 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} ( Y) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

A tag has been placed on Category:Glasgow articles with audio files requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion".
