Notability my lonnie friend - is a dogs breakfast - at times it gets put in cans that are square and octagonal at times :( - and should never be dictated by google only editors - they should be all put in triangular cans and floated on high tide into the bass strait triangle - but hey one has to be polite to idiots SatuSuro 11:11, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

According to Tony1 from FAC, it should be No. 3 as opposed to #3, but he says that number-three works as well. The later is what I did for "4 Minutes". Btw how are you? --Legolas (talk2me) 03:37, 4 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Good job on the article. I added an infobox (that needs the finer details filled in) as well as an AU hotels category. Keep up the good work. Wiki ian 05:37, 5 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

York Park copyedits edit

I'm finished on that. A couple of queries:-

  • The 2003 World Cup Rugby Union fixture between Romania and Namibia is uncited. There must be an appropriate source somewhere.
  • Record attendances. You mention the 17,000 that came to Billy Graham in 1959, but no figures for any of the concerts (Ike & Tina Turner, Crusty Demons, Elton John). No figures available?

Subject to those, I'd say the article could be renominated at FAC. I would read it carefully first, though, to ensure that no unfortunate howlers have crept in. Good luck with it. Brianboulton (talk) 13:15, 5 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I gather you have had a look at this article as you left me a comment! I've been working on improving it for a few weeks and I have been asking a few people what they think and what the next steps should be. I would greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions and I was also wondering, as I'm fairly new at this and don't know the ins and outs yet, what I should do about having it reviewed more formally. Any advice appreciated! Thanks.--Sarastro1 (talk) 08:51, 9 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

I would have done: Aaroncrick, p. 248. but I don't think there is a definite right or wrong way to do it. SGGH ping! 00:41, 10 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Re-sizing of infobox images edit

I'm guessing it was done to maintain the integrity of the page, ie someone had edited the page according to the size of the pic. Hi Aaron. First, I want to say that you have done an excellent job on the York Park article. The quality of the article has improved immensely since its first FAC. Thank you for being so persistent and for taking the advice you've been given in a very friendly and collaborative manner. I was going to promote the article earlier but noticed a small issue with the citations to quotations. Will you please let me know on my talk page when you've fixed that problem? I'm not sure if Gimmetrow is going to run the bot today, and if he doesn't I can go ahead and promote the article when you are done. Karanacs (talk) 20:00, 16 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Improving suburb articles edit

This was my pathway to expanding Hamersley, a suburb about which practically no obvious sources existed but which I got to FA. I don't know how practicable these steps would be in Tasmania but here goes. Note stage 2 looks huge merely because I illustrated with an example. It took me about the time from when you wrote to me to when I wrote this to find out all that, so it's quite doable just by thinking out carefully what search terms to use.

1. Look at the local street map and write down a list of features. I'll pick Kings Meadows - things I see in the map are "The Manor Nursing Home and Hostel", "Mt Pleasant", a high school, Nunamina Avenue Reserve, Launceston Golf Course, Carr Villa Memorial Park and Carr Villa Flora Reserve, as well as a road Kings Meadows Connector. Google Maps tells me there's a placename "Sandhill" (which it may or may not have got wrong), Machens Reserve behind the aforementioned Manor Nursing Home, a neighbourhood shopping centre with a Coles, and a small industrial area on Innocent Road. Hobart Road is clearly the main drag. Find out if possible when each of the identified features came into being. This will normally, especially in a newer suburb, point in one direction.

2. Look on Archives Office of Tasmania search. While you may not have access to the items to which it refers if you're not in Hobart, the index itself is useful. I immediately found Kings Meadows High School was established in 1959. The land for it was rented in 1951. On closer examination, there's a hell of a lot of activity there between 1955 and 1962. "Sandhill" turns up a page of references, most of which however are false positives - but we do find a state school was planned there in 1894 and that Talbot St (linking High St to Hobart Road) was planned in 1881 and serviceable by 1884. Carr Villa had an "Isolation Hospital" in the 30s, in 1923 a road (Opossum Road) was built to the cemetery gates. In 1936 permission to build a crematorium was applied for. References to the Isolation Hospital stop abruptly in 1955. Mount Pleasant was a quarantine station first referred to in 1907 (but may predate that) although this more likely relates to "Mt Pleasant Laboratory" in neighbouring Prospect according to the map. Entering Machen turns up a 1990 reference: "Launceston Planning Scheme-Area 1-64-Land Bounded by Chifley, Machen & Guy Streets-Kings Meadows." Hmm, there's a Launceston Planning Scheme - does it have maps? If so, "1-64" probably relates to Kings Meadows or a part thereof. The location described is that of the Manor Hostel. "Kings Meadows Shopping" - turns up "TPM-212-City of Launceston-Kings Meadows Shopping Centre Planning Scheme 1977" and a couple of other early 80s refs. "Innocent Rd" turned up one link which was possibly its own construction, which seems to have been in 1951. The Connector appears to have been 1987-1990, but with major public works most archive stuff is *before* the construction/opening, so I'd say 1989-1991 would be a safe period to investigate. Note that at this stage you still have a bunch of OR and not much to base an article on - but have a heap of questions for further research which may unearth reliable sources.

3. Consult any relevant general history of Launceston books (esp any official ones by the local council) and local history section of the main library in Launceston and/or the local library of the suburb, armed with the above information, looking for substantiation of it. Try to get old street maps for, in the above example, 1955-1962, 70s generally, 80s generally and compare with a relatively current street map. Don't be limited by the above, if you spot something relevant, note it down. Note that the library may have stuff which is available only by request.

4. Oh, and try and get to see those planning schemes. Town planners have a habit of scribbling stuff in pencil on them, usually official file numbers, dates, changes and the like and those notes are useful in stage 5.

5. And old newspapers, too. They're often incredibly useful although can be vague and even biased (eg developer vs residents kind of biases)

6. See if you can get old Tasmanian Government Gazettes in bound volumes. I presume the main library in Launceston would have these - failing this, try the local university campus's library. (I wander into uni libraries of which I am not a student all the time.) Look up any specific information you've found in the above stages.

By this stage you'll probably have a pile of lost leads, some very useful information and a basis for at least improving the article. Stage 3 may actually be good as a first "scouting" step to get a feel for what is available too, then you can come back to it after looking up other stuff. With Hamersley the process got quite iterative as the gazettes turned up things I had to find on maps, which required more searches on records, which turned up more hunts for gazettes, which (etc etc etc). It took me 2 months ultimately. Orderinchaos 01:36, 18 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Oh and re demographics and politics, I did up Sandy Bay, Tasmania ages ago, it is usually just a matter of substituting the correct facts and figures and ensuring the joining prose makes sense :) I can generate these if you wish - are you looking at primarily Launceston btw or going beyond? 2001-02 VB Series edit

Re: DYK nomination. Sure, why not. We could also go with the controversy angle too, as in the whole thing with Stephen Fleming manipulating the bonus point system to keep Australia out of the final. I remember it caused quite a ruckus at the time. I'll see if I can upload a VB series image to put in the infobox, will have to make sure the fair use rationale is written correctly though because these things so often get deleted. Jevansen (talk) 01:29, 21 December 2009 (UTC)Reply
