UK Albums Chart One Hit Wonders

Hello. It's me. Maybe they should change the criteria to "artists who have released a #1 album and released at least one album since that has not made the top 40". Seeming as you take such an interest in album charts, you should do something about it.

P.S: Platypus? Really?

P.S.S: I am a new user, so you should be welcoming (i.e: not critical)

Hello again. The definition of a "one-hit wonder" is obviously quite contentious, but the one given by reference texts such as The Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and the website everyHit is an artist who has had one #1 album and no other Top 40 entry on the UK albums chart, either before or after. To change this definition to suit our own agendas would count as original research, and would go against some key Wikipedia policies. Also, yep, the platypus. I like how it has the head of a duck but the body of a beaver, and how it lays eggs, despite being a mammal. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me. Thanks very much, and welcome to Wikipedia - I hope that you enjoy editing here. A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 13:39, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

You seem like quite a nice person. I was a bit harsh, saying you were critical and all. Sorry. Really, I am. (Oh, and it's good to see a Feist/Arcade Fire fan around. The Suburbs and Metals are two of my favourite albums.) 78.148.240.9 (talk) 20:50, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Hey, don't worry about it, I didn't think you were being harsh. Your question about one-hit wonders was a fair one, and you own definition makes sense. The problem is that, for example, I don't believe that Ray Quinn ever released a follow-up to his album, which, by your definition, would mean that he isn't a one-hit wonder, although I think we can both agree that he most definitely is. (Heh, nice to hear you're an Arcade Fire and Feist fan too. The Reminder's probably my favourite Feist album; couldn't pick my favourite AF record though - there are things that I love about all of them.) Hello there. For the information to be included in the article, we would preferably need, for example, a book or article that Dr Arrupe had written where he concluded that Jesus would have appeared "common looking" since Mary Magdalene had failed to recognise him initially. If you know of any such source, feel free to re-add the information with an appropriate citation to this reference. If it is removed again, it may be necessary to seek further response on the article's talk page. Hope that this helps. Happy editing! A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 00:12, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice, I don't know if he wrote that comment in any of his writings. It was made during a spiritual excercise perhaps to take away the mundane interest or dissuade of distracting from the person of Jesus to the body of Jesus. But I noticed he said it not casual, but as if long ago studied and well sifted through the scriptures for it. I do not know what is the discipline of the Jesuit Company on this topic, but they seem to have taken it into consideration at some point in their history and follow some disregard to it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.0.92.201 (talk) 22:40, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

RE: Table example

Hi there Dodoïste. I've been thinking a bit about the table that you proposed at Talk:List of Hot 100 number-one singles of the 2000s (U.S.). I quite like it, and it works well, but I've been wondering whether there might be a stronger way to indicate where one year ends and another begins. Would having a single, empty cell that spans all seven columns meet the MOS:DTT requirements? It'd look something like this:

Hot 100 number-one singles of the 2000s (U.S.)
# Reached number one Artist(s) Single Record label Weeks at
number one
Ref
851 January 15, 2000 Christina Aguilera "What a Girl Wants" RCA 2 [ref]
852 January 29, 2000 Savage Garden "I Knew I Loved You" Columbia 4 [ref]
853 February 19, 2000 Mariah Carey & Joe & 98 Degrees "Thank God I Found You" Columbia 1 [ref]
868 February 3, 2001 Shaggy & Ricardo 'Rikrok' Ducent "It Wasn't Me" MCA 2 [ref]
869 February 17, 2001 Outkast "Ms Jackson" Arista 1 [ref]
870 February 24, 2001 Joe & Mystikal "Stutter" Jive 4 [ref]
882 February 23, 2002 Ja Rule & Ashanti "Always on Time" 2 [ref]
883 March 9, 2002 Jennifer Lopez & Ja Rule "Ain't It Funny" 6 [ref]
884 April 20, 2002 Ashanti "Foolish" 10 [ref]

My reasoning is that, since the cell would be empty, there would be nothing for a screen reader to read, but I'm not entirely sure. Let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks very much. A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 13:04, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry for not responding earlier.
I can't approve it since this proposal is less accessible than the one I suggested. But if you really need something like this in order to improve the bad table with headers in the middle, it's fine as it is a significant improvement.
But something is been bugging me. How come a thin blank line is a clear indication for a change in years for normal users? How come a "2009" followed by a "2010", shown in a wide cell on the left, would not be understandable? Aren't we trying to find solutions to nonexistent problems? If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 18:28, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi there, don't worry about it. I guess my only issue with displaying the years in wide cells on the left is that, because they are centre-aligned vertically, they can sometimes not be displayed on tables with many rows. For example, the transition between 2000 and 2001 on List of number-one albums from the 2000s (UK) is dislayed on my computer like this. Here, where 2000 ends and 2001 begins is indicated by a very thin, single-pixel line in between where it says "638" and "re". To me, this seems like something that a reader could quite easily miss. My thinking was that a larger blank row would be a clearer indication of a change in years. A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs)
Now that you mention it... There is a need for a better solution. In long tables, table headers are very often out of the screen, and that's a common problem. The best solution I can find is to not merge all rows. For example, the first year rows could be repeated.

884 April 20, 2002 Ashanti "Foolish" 10 [ref]

It looks messy in my small table, but I'm sure it will be fine in a large table. The second solution is to display the row "2002" at the top of the line. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 21:08, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Of those two options, I definitely think that having the year aligned at the top (as in the 2002 example) is the better choice. A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 23:39, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes, I also believe the second option is best. I had forgotten this technique, that's why. And it's simple to do, just add style="vertical-align:top;" to the rowspan. :-) Cheers, Dodoïste - from my cell phone, addicted to Wikipedia early in the morning. :D 213.55.176.138 (talk) 04:50, 26 June 2012 (UTC)

Hello,

Stumbled upon your Planet PC article and noticed the scanned cover of issue 1 you had uploaded. Do you still own any of these magazines/cds because I can't seem to find much reference to them anywhere online and would love to rediscover this series. (1337LTD (talk) 00:17, 3 July 2012 (UTC))

Hi there! Yep, I've still got issues 1 through 11 of Planet PC (except issues 6 and 10). Have since lost all the CDs though, unfortunately. Is there anything is particular you'd like to know? A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 00:20, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Haha brilliant! I'm glad there are still copies out there. I wasn't looking to know anything in particular, I was looking for a way to get a hold of the original magazines or possibly scans but Ebay didn't turn up any results. I'm sure I still have some of the CDs somewhere myself, I recall many hours playing the Croc 2 demo and attempting to create games using the Klik and Play studio. (1337LTD (talk))

Lists of songs.

Reading the talkpage of WP:SOngs I note, Father McKenzie wrote, (I have struck out three words and highlighed one) . "List of [Artist] songs" can be reasonably and unambiguously interpreted as a complete, general list of songs recorded by an artist during their career. It seems, inadvertently perhaps, that the Good Father agrees that the phrases needs interpreting, in which case it cannot be precise or defining! Let's see if we can get more to agree with us and put this baby to bed once and for all. I post this here rather than on the page because I am expecting others to make the same mistake. Cheers. --Richhoncho (talk) 08:01, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

List of best-selling albums

Hello A Thousand Doors! I saw your article List of best-selling albums in the United Kingdom being listed as FL and I was wondering if I could use the basis of the article for another list of best-selling albums? Thanks, Erick (talk) 00:29, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Sure, go ahead! What article are you planning on creating/expanding? A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 00:43, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! The article is List of best-selling Latin albums in the United States. Right now, the article is directionless and would confuse readers who are unfamiliar with the subject. I'm don't even know what the minimum should be, though I'm leaning towards at least 1 million copies instead of 500,000 copies. Erick (talk) 00:53, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for the encouraging words, Andrew! To be honest, I think the article may be a bit of a punt at GAN due to its length, although there are hundreds of good articles that are much shorter. I'd definitely like to take you up on your offer of help from the BL end of things – having looked over it, is there anything that you think I could add or improve? Do you happen to know, say, if the BL still holds the collection, or how many people view it? That seems like it would be relevant to the article... Thanks very much. That'd be great, thank you very much! A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 22:32, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
The short answer is, "not much". Looking at various pages, it seems the project ended up on the UK Web Archive (linked at the bottom of your article) which is a British Library project, but I don't think there's any active curation of it outside the web archive system. "Modern British Collections" no longer exists as a unit in the BL (there was a big reorganization a couple of years ago) so it's probably not curated by them any more ;-). It's definitely retained in UKWA and will be in perpetuity, though!
I'd suggest switching the text in the article to "before being archived in the UK Web Archive at the British Library..." or something similar. We don't have an article on UKWA specifically, though there is one on the UK Web Archiving Consortium that preceded it. Andrew Gray (talk) 12:11, 10 October 2012 (UTC)
Ah, okay. Well thanks for looking into that for me and letting me know – I've made the change to the article that you suggested. Let me know if you think of any more ways that it could be improved. Thanks again! A Thousand Doors (talk | contribs) 23:07, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for April 22

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited List of best-selling music downloads in the United Kingdom, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Someone Like You (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.
