    Can you help verify translations of articles from Klingon edit

    Hello Mathglot,

    Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Klingon to English Wikipedia?

    This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Klingon article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

    There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Klingon , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Klingon. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

    If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

    1. Worf
    2. Chancellor Gorkon
    3. Lurok
    4. Korek
    5. General Chang

    All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Klingon article, and assess them "Pass" or "Fail" (the {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} templates may be useful here). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then assessing it, that's even better, but it isn't required.) Also please note that we are assessing accuracy not completeness, so if the English article is much shorter that is okay, as long as whatever has been translated so far is factually accurate.

    If you can help, please {{ping}} me here to let me know. You can add your pass/fails above, right next to each link, or you may indicate your results below. Thanks! Mathglot (talk) 18:22, 6 June 2017 (UTC)

    == Conflict of interest in Wikipedia ==

      Hello, Mathglot. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

    • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
    • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
    • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
    • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
    • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

    In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

    Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies.

    Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.

    Comments and requests

    Wikipedia is a widely-used reference work and managing conflict of interest is essential for ensuring the integrity of Wikipedia and retaining the public's trust in it. As in academia, COI is managed here in two steps – disclosure, and a form of peer review.

    Please note that there is no bar to being part of the Wikipedia community if you want to be involved in articles where you have a conflict of interest; there are just some things we ask you to do (and if you are paid, some things you must do).

    • Disclosure is the most important, and first step. While you need not reveal your identity (anonymity is strictly protected by our outing policy) would you please disclose if you have some connection with XXXXX XXXXXXX, either directly, or indirectly through a third party (e.g. a PR agency or the like)? You can answer however you wish (giving personally identifying information or not), but if there is a connection, please disclose it.
    • Peer review – After you respond, we can discuss the peer review process, if appropriate. Please reply below, to keep the discussion in one place.

    Thanks! ~~~~

    Deletion process how-to for Turkish Genocide
    Disclaimer: this is still in test, and should be used with caution until verified.

    This is a step-by-step summary of how to nominate a single page, Turkish Genocide, for deletion, using the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion procedure.

    Deletion status summary
    The article "Turkish Genocide" does not exist. You cannot nominate it for deletion.
    1. Place the deletion tag on the article.Place the deletion tag on the article:
      • First, log in; you won't be able to complete the process if you don't. IP users are unable to use this process.
      • Insert {{subst:afd1}} (no parameters) at the top of Turkish Genocide. Do it now
      • Include in the edit summary: AfD: Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Turkish Genocide (third nomination)]].
      • Do not mark the edit as minor. Save page.
    2. Create deletion discussion pageCreate deletion discussion page:
      • Create deletion discussion for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Turkish Genocide (third nomination) and follow the instructions there (which are also found below).
      • Add {{subst:afd2 |pg=Turkish Genocide |cat=Category |text=Deletion reason}} ~~~~
      • Use edit summary Creating deletion discussion for [[Turkish Genocide]] and save.
    3. Add article to deletion logAdd the article to today's deletion log:
      • find the current deletion log,[b] and open it for editing.
        right now (2024-05-09 22:44 (UTC)) the current log is: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2024 May 9.[c]
      • add {{subst:afd3}} to the top of the list at the current deletion log
      how do I do that?

      <!-- Add new entries to the TOP of the following list -->
      {{subst:afd3 |pg=NominationName}} <!-- YOUR ENTRY HERE -->
      {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Underground basket-weaving}}
      {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/History of Outer Slobovia}}
      {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Bar coaster flipping}}

      • use edit summary: Listing [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Turkish Genocide]], and save the page.
    4. Notify users and WikiProjectsNotify interested users and WikiProjects:
    5. Update the deletion logUpdate the deletion log:
      • go back to the same deletion log[g] you added the article to earlier
      • add one {{subst:delsort|Topic|~~~~}} template to the nomination for each WikiProject you notified.
        This lets log viewers know what projects were notified, and prevents duplicate effort.
    Explanatory notes
    1. ^ vantagem indevida – literally, "undue advantage" (or "illicit", "improper", "unfair", "unjustifiable", etc.) advantage (or "benefit", "profit", "gain", etc.) This is the thing of value offered to someone that is at the core of any form of corruption, whether "active" (corrupção ativa) or "passive corruption" (corrupção passiva) involving payment or receipt of some benefit (whether economic or otherwise) or the promise of it, to or from someone in public office, during their term, or outside their term of office if related to their function while in office.[1][2] Vantagem indevida comes up several times in the Brazilian Penal Code in articles defining different types of corruption, including Corrupção passiva (article §217), Concussão (§316), Corrupção ativa (§333), and others.
    2. ^ Deletion logs have the filename format [[Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/yyyy Month dd]]. The day is not zero-padded; so the log filename on New Year's Day is "...January 1" (not, "January 01").
    3. ^ The last time you previewed/saved this page, the time was 22:44 (UTC). If the UTC day could have changed since then, you may wish to preview again or refresh the page to ensure you are pointing to the correct log.
    4. ^ The page creator can be found in the Page Statistics tool, or by examining the page History, scrolling to the bottom of the page, and clicking the 'oldest' link if there is one.
    5. ^ The main editors of the page can be found by going to the Page Statistics tool and clicking 'Top editors'.
    6. ^ Which WikiProjects should you notify? The ones listed (usually) at the top of the Talk page of the article, i.e., Talk:Turkish Genocide.
    7. ^ The deletion log has today's date on it, and rolls over to the next day at midnight UTC; be sure to use the same log as you did before in step 3.

    Wikidata extraction edit

    Using {{Wikidata}}:

    1. {{wikidata|label|raw|page=Law on the status of Jews}} = Q19217057 (use of |page= is expensive)
    2. {{wikidata|label|raw|linked|page=Law on the status of Jews}} = Q19217057
    3. [[d:{{wikidata|label|raw|page=Law on the status of Jews}}|wd link]] = wd link
    4. {{subst:wikidata|label|raw|linked|page=Germany}} = Q183
    5. <!--{{subst:wikidata|label|raw|linked|page=France}}--> =
    6. [[d:{{wikidata|label|raw|page=Zazou}}#sitelinks-wikipedia|d:Zazou]] = d:Zazou
    7. [[d:{{subst:wikidata|label|raw|page=Zazou}}#sitelinks-wikipedia|d:Zazou]] = d:Zazou

    Using wd extraction for nav template translation edit

    1. Take a nav template, and run a search/replace:
      • Search: \[\[([^:\|\]]+)(\|?[^:\]]+)?\]\]('')?
      • Replace: [[:en:\1\2]]\3 ([[d:{{subst:wikidata|label|raw|page=\1}}#sitelinks-wikipedia|d:\1]])
    2. Click the wikidata links, find the right French (or whatever) article name, and substitute it in.

    Proposed deletion of [[:{{{1}}}]] edit

    The article [[:{{{1}}}]] has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

    Some prod reason here.

    While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

    You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

    Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

    Need help request from Mathglot edit

    This is my help request; testing Page notice for ex- Wiki Ed users. Mathglot (talk) 22:57, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

    Need help request from edit

    Try #2 with page notice wikied button, with hopefully improved section title (although it appears blank in preview mode). Mathglot (talk) 23:09, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

    Need help request from User:Example1 edit

    Try 3: with

    |preloadtitle=Need help request from [[User:<noinclude>Example1</noinclude><includeonly>{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}</includeonly>]].

    In initial preview mode, it's a nowiki'ed [[User:Example`]]; turns blue if you hit preview again. Stays example1 after saving.

    str_rep tests including white space and special chars edit

    When testing {{uw-copyright-new/sandbox|article=Gender|student=yes|boldtext=Wiki Ed content expert}} it won't bold anything past 'Wiki Ed' (and won't bold that if any characters after it are added to the boldtext param). It's as if there's a cutoff in the rendered transclusion of Template:uw-copyright-new/sandbox/body beyond which it cannot see. This also bolds nothing:

    • {{uw-copyright-new/sandbox|article=Gender|student=yes|boldtext=content expert}}

    but this works:

    • {{uw-copyright-new/sandbox|article=Gender|student=yes|boldtext=Wiki Ed}}

    So below, let's subst it into a section of it's own and then test {{str rep}} on excerpting that section, using {{uw-copyright-new/sandbox|article=Gender}}:

    substituted str rep test edit

      Hello ExpandTemplates! Your additions to Gender have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

    • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
    • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
    • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
    • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
    • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

    It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page or to reach out to your Wiki Ed content expert. Thank you. Mathglot (talk) 03:22, 8 October 2022 (UTC)

    str rep tests edit

    • fails (2 blanks before pipe): {{str rep | {{Excerpt|User:Mathglot/sandbox|substituted str rep test}} | own the copyright | '''own the copyright'''}}
    • works: {{str rep | {{Excerpt|User:Mathglot/sandbox|substituted str rep test}} | own the copyright| '''own the copyright'''}}
    • works, but eats the blank after 'copyright': {{str rep | {{Excerpt|User:Mathglot/sandbox|substituted str rep test}} | own the copyright| '''own the copyright'''}}

    str rep pattern seems to see trailing blanks before the pipe between args 2 and 3. Retest, and note the blank after 'expert' in the pattern in test a):

    • a fails: If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page or to reach out to your Wiki Ed content expert. fails!
    • b succeeds: If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page or to reach out to your Wiki Ed content expert.

    Title font tester edit

    We seem to use Georgia, which is the only serif font that doesn't display combining accent forms correctly on Windows (in Vivaldi, Chrome, Edge, Opera); unique in those browsers are 3 forms: Garamond, Georgia, and everything else, which appears to fall back to serif. Firefox has only 2 variants, with Georgia also falling back. On iOS, it looks correct, with the accent slightly to the right, but without creating an extra space. The other distinction is that the accents (circumflex, acute) have rounded forms in Georgia, and sharp edges in the others.

    Ouvrage test via Template:Cite book/French edit

    Test 1: Ouvrage edit

    • {{Ouvrage |auteur1=[[Danielle Tartakowsky]] |titre=Les manifestations de rue en France 1918-1968 |lieu=Paris |éditeur=Publications de la Sorbonne |collection=Histoire de la France au XIXe et au XXe siècle |numéro dans collection=42 |date=1997 <!--|pages totales=869--> |isbn=2-85944-307-X |lire en ligne=https://books.openedition.org/psorbonne/62302?lang=fr}}

    Subst it here:

    Test 2: Chapitre edit

    Note: Module:CS1 translator translated book, journal, and web, but makes no claim to translate 'Chapitre'. Try brute-forcing a {{Chapitre}} citation through the Module,anyway. Start with these two examples:

    • {{Chapitre |auteur1=Jean-Marie Guillon |titre chapitre=Les manifestations de ménagères : protestation populaire et résistance féminine spécifique |auteurs ouvrage=Mechtild Gilzmer, [[Christine Levisse-Touzé]], Stefan Martens (dir.) |titre ouvrage=Les femmes dans la Résistance en France |sous-titre ouvrage=Actes du colloque international de Berlin, 8-10 octobre 2001, organisé par le Mémorial de la Résistance allemande de Berlin (Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand) et par le Mémorial du Maréchal Leclerc de Hauteclocque/Musée Jean-Moulin, Paris |lieu=Paris |éditeur=Tallandier |année=2003 |pages totales=430 |isbn=978-2847340303 |passage=107-133}}
    • {{Chapitre |nom=Tartakowsky |prénom=Danielle |titre chapitre=Les manifestations contre la vie chère |auteurs ouvrage=Jean-Luc Leleu, Françoise Passera et [[Jean Quellien]] (dir.) |titre ouvrage=La France pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale |lieu=Paris |éditeur=Fayard - Ministère de la Défense |année=2010 |pages totales=333 |isbn=9782213654614 |passage=146-147}}

    Change 'Chapitre' to 'Ouvrage', comment out |pages totales which we don't have, and prefix with 'subst:' to get this:

    • {{Subst:Ouvrage |auteur1=Jean-Marie Guillon |titre chapitre=Les manifestations de ménagères : protestation populaire et résistance féminine spécifique |auteurs ouvrage=Mechtild Gilzmer, [[Christine Levisse-Touzé]], Stefan Martens (dir.) |titre ouvrage=Les femmes dans la Résistance en France |sous-titre ouvrage=Actes du colloque international de Berlin, 8-10 octobre 2001, organisé par le Mémorial de la Résistance allemande de Berlin (Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand) et par le Mémorial du Maréchal Leclerc de Hauteclocque/Musée Jean-Moulin, Paris |lieu=Paris |éditeur=Tallandier |année=2003 <!--|pages totales=430--> |isbn=978-2847340303 |passage=107-133}}
    • {{Subst:Ouvrage |nom=Tartakowsky |prénom=Danielle |titre chapitre=Les manifestations contre la vie chère |auteurs ouvrage=Jean-Luc Leleu, Françoise Passera et [[Jean Quellien]] (dir.) |titre ouvrage=La France pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale |lieu=Paris |éditeur=Fayard - Ministère de la Défense |année=2010 <!--|pages totales=333--> |isbn=9782213654614 |passage=146-147}}

    Now run it to see what we get out of it:
